Gangster Squad and Gravity: Good News, Bad News From Warner Bros.

There’s good news and bad news from Warner Bros. about Gravity and Gangster Squad , two of its most anticipated fall releases. Which do you prefer first? The bad news? Why, of course! Via THR : Gravity , the upcoming thriller starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as astronauts stranded at a space station, has been pushed to a 2013 release, studio Warner Bros. announced on Monday. The film from writer-director Alfonso Cuarón was originally scheduled to open on November 21, 2012, but is now marked only as being an “unscheduled 2013” release. An early test screening of a rough cut of Gravity earlier this month in Pasadena, CA., drew strong reactions , both for and against, in response to the still-unfinished film. Womp woooomp . But hey — chin up! After a spiffy new trailer prompted Warners to settle on a date for its fearsome-looking Gangster Squad , along comes word (via Box OFfice Mojo ) of the searing Ryan Gosling/Josh Brolin/Sean Penn crime drama Gangster Squad settling into the Sept. 7 frame. There it will do battle with the Henry Cavill/Bruce Willis thriller The Cold Light of Day , which I’d bet Summit Entertainment will relocate at some point in the not very distant future. Developing… [ THR , BOM ]

30 For 30 Documentaries Re-Upped at ESPN

You don’t need to be a sports fan to have been touched by the 30 For 30 documentary series produced by ESPN, one of the few thriving outlets anywhere for nonfiction filmmaking and a patron of diverse directors from Oscar winners Barry Levinson, Alex Gibney and Barbara Kopple to legends Albert Maysles and Steve James to neophytes Ice Cube and Steve Nash. As such, today’s a good day for all of us, with ESPN announcing that it will continue 30 For 30 both on the network and online. Originally intended to celebrate ESPN’s 30th anniversary from late 2009 to the end of 2010, the series gained enough popularity to continue through 2011 and beyond; its most recent installment, Jose Morales’s 26 Years: The Dewey Bozella Story , premiered in March. Today, meanwhile, the NYT reports that the network has re-upped 30 For 30 for two years in conjunction with its sports-culture offshoot Grantland : “When we embarked on 30 for 30 , we always wondered if there would be 30 good stories,” said Connor Schell, vice president and executive producer of ESPN Films. “Now, I think all of us in this group believe that there is an infinite number of stories.” As the films roll out, they will be augmented on Grantland by podcasts, feature stories and oral histories. A short digital film — which will be unrelated to the longer ones — will make its debut each month on Grantland. Mr. Schell described the shorts as “visual editorials,” of five to nine minutes. “They’re meant to be interesting conversations with people who have a point of view about something or sports stories that don’t require a four-act treatment,” he said. The first short, Eric Drath’s Here Now , went online today and concerns the continuing odyssey of baseball’s exiled all-time hit king Pete Rose. Check it out , and mazel tov to all. SMH: ESPN Apologizes For Out Of Pocket “Chink In The Armor” Headline In Reference To Jeremy Lin And Knicks Loss

Who actually believes these jerks are sorry? In their eagerness to make an unfunny pun about the NBA’s newest Asian sensation — Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin , ESPN’s mobile site posted the headline “Chink In The Armor” last night for a story about Jeremy Lin and the Knicks’ loss. ESPN has since removed the headline and released the following statement: Last night, ESPN.com’s mobile web site posted an offensive headline referencing Jeremy Lin at 2:30 am ET. The headline was removed at 3:05 am ET. We are conducting a complete review of our cross-platform editorial procedures and are determining appropriate disciplinary action to ensure this does not happen again. We regret and apologize for this mistake. Uhhh that’s more than a mistake. That’s a pretty racist error. What should ESPN do to show they’re truly apologetic for being so out of pocket??? Jalen Rose Busted

The 38-year-old former NBA player pleaded guilty to a March drunk driving crash back in May, later issuing an apology statement for his conduct. Rose#39;s attorney criticized the judge#39;s steep sentence for Rose#39;s DUI, calling him out for making an example of the ESPN analyst, who has no record. Wow. Jalen Rose can#39;t seem to get a break. Dude got popped for speeding Wednesday night just hours after he#39;d been sentenced to 20 days in jail for DUI by a judge earlier that very day. Ros

REVIEW: Crass, Crude Hall Pass Finds Redemption in Unlikely Source

The pleasantly crude Hall Pass reminds us of what’s been missing from movies: Those squirm-inducing moments in comedy that produce enough discomfort that at points what we’re watching is half a heartbeat away from a horror film.

ESPN Anchor Gets Pulled From Broadcast After Sexist Remarks To A Female Co-Worker

What’s a little “sweetcakes” and “a**hole” between co-workers? Apparently to the suits at ESPN its a lot… A veteran sports broadcaster was taken off air after he called a female colleague ‘sweetcakes’. Ron Franklin further insulted Jeannie Edwards when she objected to the sexist name by calling her an ‘a**hole’. The spat came during a production meeting and was not made while the pair were on air. The incident occurred in a pre-game production meeting also attended by ESPN announcers Ed Cunningham and Rod Gilmore. When the conversation turned to the subject of Gilmore’s wife Marie being elected mayor of Alameda in California, Edwards tried to join in but was cut off by Franklin, according to reports. ‘Why don’t you leave this to the boys, sweetcakes,’ Franklin is said to have told her. ‘Don’t call me sweetcakes, I don’t like being talked to like that,’ Edwards responded. Franklin replied: ‘OK then, a**hole.’ Edwards reported Franklin’s comments to ESPN management, who attempted to pull him from the Chik-fil-A Bowl broadcast, but it was too late to find a replacement. This guy clearly hasn’t learned from the gang of other douchebags, jerk-offs, and a**holes that have made sexist jokes about co-workers on or off the air. But then again homie is like 70, he probably still calls us “nigger”…SMH Source
