Tyler Perry Plots World Conquest

Everybody knows the real box-office money these days is in international, and so Tyler Perry jetted off to London over the weekend to begin laying the groundwork for a European insurgency. Prior to hosting a screening of Why Did I Get Married Too? with star Janet Jackson, Perry did TV interviews and met with fans, noting, “I heard there were people who had an appreciation of Tyler Perry stuff, and this is really cool to know.” Indeed! Those Brits will be stealing his credit card number before you know it. [ NYT ]

Jay-Z Breaks Bread With Billionaires Mayor Bloomberg And Nets Owner

‘I share his passion for Brooklyn,’ Mikhail Prokhorov says of NBA partner Hov at Gracie Mansion, according to the New York Post. By Mawuse Ziegbe New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Jay-Z share breakfast Photo: Chris Hondros/Getty Images Jay-Z is known for doing things big, but nothing says baller status like sharing breakfast with two billionaires, which is just what the Jiggaman did Wednesday morning in New York. The MC and minority owner of the New Jersey Nets noshed on bagels with media mogul/ major of New York City Michael Bloomberg and the new majority Nets owner, Mikhail Prokhorov, at Gracie Mansion (traditionally the mayor’s official residence though Bloomberg doesn’t live there). Prokhorov spent the rest of the day on a tour of the city, which included a stop in Jay-Z’s native Brooklyn, where the Nets plan to move in two years. While the European tycoon has made his multibillion dollar fortune in the banking and mining industries, Prokhorov clearly has his ear to the streets and revealed his respect for Jigga. According to the New York Daily News, Prokhorov gushed about his fellow Nets owner: “We are soul mates.” And there may be more power breakfasts in store for Hov and Prokhorov as the billionaire added, “I’m looking forward to hanging out with him.” While Prokhorov was aware that he and Jay-Z make something of an odd pairing, he insisted the connection between the two moguls is deeper than rap. “Despite the fact that I am very far from the rap music, we have a lot in common,” Prokhorov said, according to the New York Post. Plus, the two power brokers do have one important thing in common: “I share his passion for Brooklyn,” Prokhorov said. Are you surprised to hear Jay-Z is breaking bread with billionaires? Greenland rising rapidly as ice melts

The ice is melting so fast in Greenland that the giant island is rising noticeably as the weight is lifted. In some spots, the land is rising 1 inch per year. A vast ice cap covers much of Greenland, in some places up to 1.2 miles (2 km) thick. The ice, in place for eons, presses down the land, making the elevation at any given point lower than it would be sans ice. Scientists have documented on Greenland and elsewhere that when longstanding ice melts away, the land rebounds. Even the European Alps are rising as glaciers melt. Now, scientists at the University of Miami say Greenland's ice is melting so quickly that the land underneath is rising at an accelerated pace. Some coastal areas are going up by nearly 1 inch per year, the scientists announced today. If current trends continue, that could accelerate to as much as 2 inches per year by 2025, said Tim Dixon, professor of geophysics at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) and principal investigator of the study. “It's been known for several years that climate change is contributing to the melting of Greenland's ice sheet,” Dixon said in a statement. “What's surprising, and a bit worrisome, is that the ice is melting so fast that we can actually see the land uplift in response.” Dixon added: “Even more surprising, the rise seems to be accelerating, implying that melting is accelerating.” The results, based on a study of data from global positioning system (GPS) receivers stationed on the rocky shores of Greenland, were published online by the journal Nature Geoscience. The data stretches back to 1995. “During ice ages and in times of ice accumulation, the ice suppresses the land,” explained Shimon Wdowinski, research associate professor in the University of Miami RSMAS, and co-author of the study. “When the ice melts, the land rebounds upwards,” Wdowinski said. “Our study is consistent with a number of global warming indicators, confirming that ice melt and sea-level rise are real and becoming significant.” continued added by: JanforGore

Lindsay Lohan Shows Off Her Cannes

Everyone knows there’s a party going on over on the French Riviera so obviously Lindsay Lohan is going to hop on some rich old man’s jet and get her boozing little ass over there. Here she is in Cannes working the red carpet, trying to find some sort of job and showing off the sweet front meat that we like so much. I think it’s time Lindsay throws in the towel, she’s had a good run, she should find herself a rich European sugar daddy or momma and retire. She could spend her days lying around on a yacht in her bikini getting hammered on expensive champagne. Actually that sounds pretty good. Sign me up.

Lindsay Lohan Squares Off with Judge, Volcano

The judge in Lindsay Lohan’s DUI case wants her a$$ in court. The problem? She’s in France and the Icelandic ash cloud may mean her return is no Cannes do. Lohan’s presence is required in court on Thursday for a hearing to establish if she is in compliance with the terms of her ongoing probation for a DUI conviction. It had been unclear whether Lindsay was required to be there in person. The judge said she is. If she’s not there, a bench warrant could be issued for her arrest. Following a pair of DUI arrests in 2007, the 23-year-old was ordered to complete an 18-month alcohol education program. Whether she’s done so is debatable. Reports say Lindsay has slacked hard core when it comes to attending mandatory classes ( partying like a madman won’t help her cause) and may end up jailed. Clearly living in denial , Lohan flew out from New York on Friday and arrived in Nice, France on Sunday for the Cannes Film Festival. How long will she be there? That may depend … on Mother Nature. Sources say she can’t get a flight to the U.S. because of the volcanic ash from Iceland hampering European airspace. Airports all over the continent are jam-packed and it’s impossible to get a seat. Wonder how the volcanic ash excuse will play before LL’sa no-nonsense judge.

Ronnie James Dio Remembered As ‘One Of The Nicest Guys’ By Metal Peers

Members of Metallica, Slipknot, Slayer, Anthrax, more mourn the vocalist, who died Sunday. By Ryan J. Downey  Ronnie James Dio Photo: Steve Thorne/ Getty Images Friends, disciples and fans throughout the heavy metal community are remembering the late Ronnie James Dio as not only one of the best but one of the kindest vocalists in history. The singer for Black Sabbath, Rainbow and of course, Dio, succumbed to cancer on Sunday at age 67. “The world has lost a real talent and a genuinely great man,” Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor said in an e-mail to MTV News. “Words cannot describe my sadness and music will never be the same without his voice and honesty. He will always be an icon to heavy metal and hard rock. On behalf of all of the fans and the singers inspired by his life, we will miss you, Ronnie.” “Few people have had the ability to carry a song like Dio, literally demanding your attention as he effortlessly re-created live the amazing things he did on record,” Slayer guitarist Kerry King told MTV. “It’s odd how things get taken from you quickly. I just saw him a month ago. I know I was lucky to have known Ronnie, one of the nicest guys in the business, without a doubt. He will be hugely missed.” Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian echoed that common sentiment: “Ronnie was the nicest man in metal,” he declared. “Every day on tour,

Amgen Tour of California 2010

This new date makes the Tour of California an ideal springboard to the Tour, with its eight days of racing followed two weeks later by the weeklong Dauphiné Libéré in France (or three weeks later by the Tour of Switzerland). So what sort of racing will this year’s Tour of California produce? Will the event’s first-ever mountaintop finish prove decisive in the GC stakes? Will an Aussie or European finally defeat the Americans? Or will we see another decisive time trial — and a “four-peat” for Le

London To Remain Open Despite Volcanic Ash

Aviation officials closed airports in northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland on Sunday due to a drifting, dense cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland. All airports in Northern Ireland shut down at 1 p.m. (1200 GMT; 8 a.m. EDT), along with others in northern England — including Manchester and Liverpool — as well as Prestwick in Scotland, the National Air Traffic Service said. Airports in London — including Heathrow, Europe’s busiest — were staying open for now. British and Irish aviation authorities could not say when or if other airports would have to close but expected London’s airports to remain open until at least 7 p.m. (1800 GMT; 2 p.m. EDT) and Shannon, in western Ireland, to be open until 11 p.m. (2200 GMT; 6 p.m. EDT). Dublin was expected to stay open until at least early Monday. The German Aerospace Center sent up a test flight Sunday to measure the ash concentration, and the country’s air traffic control said flights in Germany would not be affected by volcanic ash before Wednesday. Ash can clog jet engines. The April 14 eruption at Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokul volcano forced most countries in northern Europe to shut their air spaces April 15-20, grounding an estimated 10 million travelers worldwide and costing airlines over $2 billion. In southern Iceland, activity at the volcano was fluctuated throughout the day but had not particularly intensified, civil protection official Agust Gunnar Gylfason said Sunday. He blamed the closures on shifting winds. “What really changes the situation is the weather pattern,” he said. The Icelandic Meteorological Office said “presently there are no indications that the eruption is about to end.” “No major changes are seen in the activity, the ash cloud is slightly higher than yesterday,” the agency said. Airlines complained bitterly over the air space closures last month, calling them an overreaction. The European air safety agency last week proposed drastically narrowing the continent’s no-fly zone due to volcanic ash to 120 miles (190 kilometers) like the one used in the United States. The proposal still must be approved. In other news, the England vs Australia live stream is about to start and British cricket fans are priming up to watch the ICC T20 Finals. REVIEW: Hypnotic, Stop-Motion Metropia Misses the Bigger Picture

Dark and queer enough to catch your attention but lacking the story power to hold it, Metropia is an aesthetic in search of an author. The first animated feature from Swedish director Tarik Saleh, Metropia posits a familiar scenario — middle-class male malaise — in a near-future Europe made exotic by its fall into dystopian ruin. The allusions made by the opening titles to the environmental and financial crises that have ostensibly brought Europe together (the countries have been literally connected by an inter-continental subway system) are a little misleading: As they attempt to build a paranoid allegory around the monolithic potential of the European Union, Saleh and writer Fredrik Edin move further and further into the experience of a call-center employee named Roger (voiced by Vincent Gallo). Ultimately this approach shrinks the scope of a setting that seems designed for bigger things.
