The winners have been officially unveiled at the 2015 Country Music Association Awards, or CMA Awards, airing Wednesday evening on ABC. Call it what you want, the biggest night in country lived up to its billing, and not just because of Blake Shelton-Miranda Lambert drama , either. Newcomer and rising star Chris Stapleton stole the show at the 49th annual event in Nashville, both on the stage and the winners’ circle. The longtime songwriter took home three of the night’s prizes, Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and New Artist of the Year. “This is an unbelievable thing for me, I’m not going to take it lightly,” said Stapleton, who teamed up for Justin Timberlake (really) on stage. The unlikely duo brought the house down, too. Miranda Lambert, winning Female Vocalist of the Year after a rousing performance of her own, said, “I’m going to go home and practice.” The evening’s other major winners were Little Big Town, who took home three awards, and Luke Bryan, who won Entertainer of the Year. But the 22-year-old proudly became just the second woman to pull off the double play in the fan-voted category, and she told the crowd, “I’m so happy about this … I want to say to my fellow nominees in this category, I respect you so much and I love you.” Swift had to attend the ceremony solo, though, as the New Jersey teenage cancer victim who scored a date with the singer to the show was hospitalized over the weekend. According to a Facebook post, 18-year-old Kevin McGuire — who had tried to invite Swift to his prom — was admitted to the hospital on Friday night. Swift tweeted some well-wishes to her date, writing, “Just talked to Kevin McGuire … He’s not well enough to join me at the ACMs. Please keep him in your thoughts. I’ll make it up to you, Kevin!” Country’s new “it” couple, “The Voice” coach and singer Blake Shelton and wife Miranda Lambert, also won big. According to the Associated Press the show included a big helping of performances, including Carrie Underwood’s fiery opening, during which she rocked a magenta and black dress minidress with fringe to sing her new single, “Good Girl.” There were also a number of unexpected visits from rock and hip-hop stars, with U2 singer Bono introducing Dierks Bentley and KISS presenting an award to Lady Antebellum while wearing their full stage makeup. And it was all the Detroit MC’s idea to tap the outspoken pop singer to add vocals on the number, according to the track’s producer, DJ Khalil. “That was Em’s idea,” Khalil told MTV News of the collaboration. The Aftermath producer revealed that a different artist was initially featured on the song, but Pink owned the collabo with her punked-out rendition. “He called me, and originally we had another vocalist, Liz Rodrigues, who is in my group,” Khalil explained. “I have a group called the New Royales and they’re based in Canada; Liz is from Toronto. Originally she was on the song, but she was already on “25 to Life” and “Almost Famous.” So, we were thinking, ‘Who else could we get for this record that would actually fit?’ “When he brought up Pink, I thought she would kill it, she’d murder it. He set up the session in Malibu and we did the session and she was done in like 20 minutes. She nailed it in her way. I was kind of married to the original, but once I heard what she did and she put her stamp on it, it was like perfect, ’cause she just brought the attitude out.” The organ-heavy production featured Eminem shooting off a rapid-fire stream of punch lines. “Listen, garden tool/ Don’t make me introduce you to my power tool,” Em spits. “You know the f—ing drill/ How you douche bags feel?/ Knowing you’re disposable, Summer’s Eve, Massengill.” Khalil said his intricate production style is what led Eminem to recruit him to work on Recovery. The Shady lyricist had to adapt to rapping over his particular style. “They were into my production, and it’s different than everybody else’s, because it’s dense,” Khalil explained. “There’s a lot of music going on. Even with ‘Won’t Back Down,’ [Eminem] told me the track was beating him down. He had to scream to be able to rap over that track. The singer for Black Sabbath, Rainbow and of course, Dio, succumbed to cancer on Sunday at age 67. “The world has lost a real talent and a genuinely great man,” Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor said in an e-mail to MTV News. “Words cannot describe my sadness and music will never be the same without his voice and honesty. He will always be an icon to heavy metal and hard rock. On behalf of all of the fans and the singers inspired by his life, we will miss you, Ronnie.” “Few people have had the ability to carry a song like Dio, literally demanding your attention as he effortlessly re-created live the amazing things he did on record,” Slayer guitarist Kerry King told MTV. “It’s odd how things get taken from you quickly. I just saw him a month ago. I know I was lucky to have known Ronnie, one of the nicest guys in the business, without a doubt.
