I Met Amy Roloff at a Book Signing and This is What I Learned

I’m blushing. So said Amy Roloff shortly after she was introduced to a sold-out room in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Thursday, July 25 and everyone in attendance responded with raucous applause, along some hoots and hollers. Roloff hails from a suburb of Detroit and her parents currently live in northern Michigan, making this trip a bit of a homecoming for the reality star. So her very warm welcome may have had something to do with Roloff being a native Michigander, a fact she brought up multiple times during her talk. But it also may have had lot to do with how genuine she truly seems to be, how open and honest she is about herself and her family and, as cheesy as this sounds, as real and as down-to-Earth as she comes across while on stage. I was there for this event. I speak from experience. I’d love nothing more than to sit down for a home-cooked meal by the Little People, Big World star and simply talk with her over a glass of wine. “I’m so amazed that people actually came out here to hear me talk,” Amy said to open her speech, encouraging everyone in the crowd to “take pictures and hashtag, Roloff then delved into the main themes she tried hitting in her book, A Little Me , along with her motivation for writing it in the first place. “I believe we all have our own stories to tell,” she explained. “We can learn so much from each other if we’re willing to be open.” This, of course, sums up the reason why Little People, Big World has exploded into such an unexpected hit: the Roloffs are nothing if not open with each other on air. Amy spent a bulk of her talk embracing the fact that she’s a dwarf and asking the audience to embrace the differences they have with one another, to “recognize that this is okay” and emphasizing: “You have to be willing to be vulnerable and expose yourself in order to give people a chance to overcome their issues [with diversity].” Amy also talked a whole lot about her kids — because, boy oh boy, is she proud of her sons and daughter. She even told a story about how Zach (or Zachary , as she most often referred to him as) would sometimes complain as a child about how Jeremy could do something and, due to his stature, he could not. But Amy wasn’t going to accept this as an excuse. “I told him ‘You need to come up with your own plan for handling that in that case. It may take you 15 times and Jeremy only one time to do something, but that’s okay.'” Zach has clearly taken this lesson to heart. He talks in similar fashion about his own son . This is the inscription Amy wrote in her book for my wife, who will be receiving it on August 2 for her birthday. Another lesson Amy tried to impart on her kids? Their own intrinstic value and self-worth. Take Molly, for instance. “I never told her she was beautiful when we put makeup on because I never wanted her to think she wasn’t pretty without it,” Amy said. She also described Molly as a “minimalist” who never really had any interest in being on the show — which was always just find with Amy. Amy didn’t shy away from her divorce, either. She didn’t get into some of the sordid details laid out in the memoir , but she did say the following: “Going through a divorce in the public eye… I was like, “I know I did stuff wrongm, but he did A LOT of stuff wrong.’ It took me awhile to be good with me and realize I still have something to offer and give.” What about Little People, Big World? Did Amy ever see this success coming? Heck no. “I didn’t want to do the show at first,” she admitted. “But  sometimes you have to take that step outside your box. I was unsure and afraid and intimidated by how other people would respond to us.” She then confirmed that a new season of Little People, Big World is on the way . Roloff proceeded to touch on a number of topics that we’ll summarize below: – Jeremy and Audrey partly left the show because they “had a hard time” with how events on the series don’t air until six months after they occur, which is a bit weird in this age of keeping followers apprised on social media in real time. – Jacob left home at the age of 18 and it “broke my heart,” Amy said. But “I will always be here and will always love and support him.” – How did she feel when J acob blasted his family for being fake when he quit the show three years ago? She understood. “He was six years old when we started,” Amy explained.  She then went on to tell a story of how she answered this question years ago when a reporter asked her about the accusation. “To Jacob, his family was a selfie,” she said in a pretty impressive metaphor. “You know, how you always make yourself look extra nice for a selfie, find the perfect angle and everything? He never got to see his family as anything except for this sort of selfie.” She added that Jacob “had to leave in order to come back,” if that makes sense, and that he’s a “fantastic uncle.” – Jacob and Isabel are not getting married on the family farm. But they will hold their wedding reception there. – She hopes Jeremy takes over the farm someday. – Audrey is due on Janauary 8. – She and Jeremy did NOT plan to have this baby! – Jeremy is hoping for a boy, but they also want to have more than two kids. – Tori is due right around Thanksgiving, but she hopes the baby arrives about a week early to separate her birthday from the holiday. – She doesn’t know if Tori and Zach have settled on a name, but “I’m not really a fan” of one of the options, she laughed. – And, lastly and perhaps most importantly, what are her kids’ favorite meals that she cooks? Spaghetti for Zachary; turkey enchillads for Jeremy; stir fried rice for Molly. “Jacob is a vegan now I think,” she joked. “So who the heck knows with him?” All in all, it was a great night with a great guest who sat and spoke with every single attendee who asked for a photo and an autograph. I was a big fan of Amy’s before. I am a huge fan now. View Slideshow: Little People, Big World: The Roloffs’ Shocking Scandals… Exposed! [Updated] –

Meet the Boss Ladies Behind the First Ever ComplexCon Chicago and ComplexCon Community Week

Read the original here:

Source: Complex / Complex Since its inception three-years ago, Complex Network’s annual ComplexCon has become a leading celebration of our culture and our community. Spearheaded in Long Beach, California, ComplexCon is Complex’s “world fair of youth culture” and is known for bringing thousands of sneaker heads, change makers, community leaders, artists, fashion gurus, entertainers and celebrities together for two-days of music, art, discussion, entertainment and culture. Now, the annual festival is making its way across the country for the first time ever and introducing the Windy City (and the nation) to ComplexCon Chicago in what appears to be the network’s biggest event yet. Executive Producer Isis Arias Clermont promises that the inaugural ComplexCon Chicago will be unlike any other. “It’s different than traditional festivals that are more focused on music and art,” Clermont explained. “It’s really bringing the ‘URL to IRL’. The experience includes retail and shopping opportunities with cool brands, music performances (which are the energetic part of the show) and Complex Current which is a format of our panels and fireside chats with talent that speak to different topics that our audience is interested in.” One of the ways Chicago will differ from Long Beach is through the introduction of the first ever ComplexCon Community Week which is a weeklong series of community driven events meant to provide resources to cities (like Chicago) that birthed Complex Culture. Led by Complex’s Director of Community Outreach, Nicole Russell , ComplexCon Community Week will kick off on Monday, July 15th and conclude on Friday, July 19 th , right before ComplexCon officially begins. “It was really important to use this platform to inspire the people watching us to do more for the community – not just in the spaces where ComplexCon will be hosted but in their own,” Russell said. “We’re really trying to make sure we’re bringing awareness to different organizations but also showing everyone that’s tuning in how they can get involved and stand up for the causes that matter to them.” ComplexCon Community Week will consist of a variety of events such as a Soup Kitchen Takeover in partnership with Jaden Smith, a STREETWEAR.EDU panel discussion hosted by Trinidad James and a small Chicago-style block party for A Night Out Against Gun Violence, an event that Russell believes will help shine a light on some of the initiatives that the Chicago based Save Money, Save Life Foundation already supports. “It’s really just about bringing awareness to the people that are here [in Chicago] and showing them how they can show up and support one another,” Russell explained. “I think when you’re looking at the news and you’re seeing all of these things happening, all these challenges in your own community, everyone wants to know how they can help and what can they do. Not everyone has those tools to just fix, or not everyone knows what to do to inspire the change. We wanted to use this platform at Community Week to provide that information.” As Community Week kicks off and ComplexCon Chicago grows closer, Clermont and Russell appear to be tackling everything with ease. These ladies are leading the charge on one of the biggest events for our culture in a male dominated industry– and are killing it. “I think this has been an incredible opportunity,” Clermont said. “Everything comes with its own challenges and I think for us to be in the positions that we’re in, have the ability to have a voice in the room and really help lead these things has been great.” In spite of the challenges that come with pulling off any successful event, the ladies both agree that working with such an amazing female-led ComplexCon team has been quite rewarding and inspiring. “It’s really cool to be on such a dynamic team of fearless women,” Russell said. “There’s a lot of pressure, especially in a new role where were creative something for the very first time, but there’s support here. And its support coming from other women, which is great. So, it makes my job easier.” With three successful ComplexCons already in the books, introducing the annual culture staple to the city of Chicago is right on time, as Clermont believes that Chicago’s culture is exactly what embodies the Complex brand. “We definitely feel that Chicago is a city that’s culturally important to us. They have a strong audience that is interested in the things that we’re putting together such as hip-hop, streetwear and sneaker culture.” Clermont also assured us that Chi-Town is definitely in for a treat this weekend as the ComplexCon Chicago team has a ton of surprises up their sleeves for the first ever event. “We’ve got a lot of surprises on the ground,” Clermont said. “It’s one of those things that you just have to be there for. You never know who you’ll run into on the floor.” For more on ComplexCon Community Week and ComplexCon Chicago, visit: https://www.complexcon.com/

Ariana Grande: I Was So Drunk and Sad I Barely Remember Making "Thank U, Next"!

2018 was a crazy roller coaster ride for Ariana Grande.  She hit some extremely low points after she and Pete Davidson began dating, got engaged and broke up all within the span of about six months.  And then again when she had to deal with the tragic loss of her ex-boyfriend and beloved rapper Mac Miler who passed away after an accidental drug overdose . But they say you can’t appreciate the good days until you have had some bad ones, and Ari definitely faced numerous difficult days.  And with her losses came major gains.  In February of this year, Ariana was taking over the charts. Literally, it felt like she was releasing a new banger every other day.  Thanks to her whirlwind romance with Pete Davidson, her latest album Thank U, Next  was born. And thanks to music Ari was able to find a bit of peace following Miller’s death.  In her new cover interview with Vogue , Grande opens up about the making of her album along with growing up and dealing with grief.  The Sweetener songstress started by revealing that her friends had actually convinced her to move to New York City from Los Angeles for the summer of 2018.  “My friends were like, ‘Come! We’re gonna have a fun summer,'” she recalled. “And then I met Pete, and it was an amazing distraction.” “It was frivolous and fun and insane and highly unrealistic,” she said. “And I loved him. And I didn’t know him.” Ari then went on to explain how she isn’t good at real life — we all get it, adulting is hard. “I’m like an infant when it comes to real life and this old soul, been-around-the-block-a-million-times artist,” she added. “I still don’t trust myself with the life stuff.” Grande ultimately released her hit breakup anthem “Thank U, Next” which graciously called out exes including Davidson, Big Sean, Ricky Alvarez and yes, Mac Miller. The song was released during the period in which it was made, which is one of the first times she had been single in a while.  “I think that this is the first album and also the first year of my life where I’m realizing that I can no longer put off spending time with myself, just as me,” she explained. “I’ve been boo’d up my entire adult life.” “I’ve always had someone to say goodnight to. So “thank u, next” was this moment of self-realization,” she continued.  “It was this scary moment of ‘Wow, you have to face all this stuff now. No more distraction. You have to heal all this s–t.'” Not only was Ariana putting out music because she had fresh inspo from her break up with Pete , but also because the studio was her safe haven.   Miller passed away in September 2018 and Ari and Pete split the next month, with both of those dramatic events taking place back to back, the 26-year-old admits she barely even remembers making the album. “My friends know how much solace music brings me, so I think it was an all-around, let’s get her there type situation,” she said. “But if I’m completely honest, I don’t remember those months of my life because I was (a) so drunk and (b) so sad.” “I don’t really remember how it sarted or how it finished, or how all of a sudden there were 10 songs on the board,” she recalled. And while the Florida native is for the most part extremely open with her fans, she still prefers to keep that part of her life private. “I’m a person who’s been through a lot and doens’t know what to say about any of it to myself, let alone the world,” she admitted to the outlet.  “I see myself onstage as this perfectly polished, great-at-my-job entertainer, and then in situations like this I’m just this little basket-case puddle of figuring it out.” “I have to be the luckiest girl in the world, and the unlickiest, for sure,” she said She went on to explain how she is currently working on celebrating the good, rather than always fearing for the worse . “I’m walking this fine line between healing myself and not letting the things I’ve gone through be picked at before I’m ready,” she said. “And also celebrating the beautiful things that have happened in my life and not feeling scared that they will be taken away from me because trauma tells me that they will be.” “you know what I mean?” she adds. But while she is currently on tour, we feel for her. “I was researching healing and PTSD and talking to therapists, and everyone was like, ‘You need a routine, a schedule,'” she said. “Of course because I’m an extremist, I’m like, OK, I’ll go on tour!” “But it’s hard to sing songs that are about wounds that are so fresh,” she admitted. “It’s fun, it’s pop music, and I’m not trying to make it sound like anything that it’s not but these songs to me really do represent some heavy s–t.” While Ari still has many shows left on her Sweetener world tour, we send all the love and well wishes her way.  View Slideshow: Ariana Grande DESTROYS Haters Over Disgusting Mac Miller Comments!
