Kid Rock Doesn’t Want Praise For Touring With USO

‘It’s really a rewarding, life-changing experience,’ Rock says of performing in Iraq, Afghanistan. By James Montgomery Kid Rock Photo: MTV News In 2007 (and again in 2008) Kid Rock teamed with the USO to perform for troops based in places like Camp Phoenix in Kabul, Afghanistan, and Contingency Operating Base Speicher in Tikrit, Iraq. He was moved by the men and women he met there — enough to write “Born Free,” the title track off his upcoming album, due November 16. But up until very recently, he didn’t talk about the experience. He didn’t think he needed to. “It’s one of those things I used to do and try not to talk too much about, because it’s not something you go to promote something at, or do anything for any self-gain at all,” he told MTV News. “But what I’ve learned is that maybe if I do talk about it, the more I can encourage some other people in my position to go, because they’re really happy over there just to get a slice of America at any level, but to have someone in the entertainment industry who’s had a little slice of success is really a big boost for those guys. “I would encourage anybody that hasn’t gone to really think about it,” he continued. “It’s really a rewarding, life-changing experience.” And obviously, the soldiers he met and the sacrifice he witnessed made a lasting impact on him … because Born Free is very much an album he made for them. It’s a tribute to their sacrifices, their selflessness and their tireless service in defense of the U.S. Which is why, whenever he’s praised for performing at USO shows, Kid Rock only shrugs. The way he sees it, it’s the least he can do. “It’s a funny thing to do that and get commended, because it’s obviously just the opposite way [of] how I view it, [which] is to do something to commend these brave men and women,” he said. “It’s been a long war, let’s face it. We were talking the other day, wondering how many times Bob Hope’s been [overseas], thinking of, you know, those World Wars were, like, four years, and this is going on eight, nine years now. There’s a lot of entertainment needed over there, and that’s what I can provide, and it’s always a privilege just to be asked to go and play for those guys.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Kid Rock Related Artists Kid Rock

‘Spider-Man’ Star Andrew Garfield Bares His Soul In ‘Never Let Me Go’

Before his high-profile roles in ‘Social Network’ and ‘Spider-Man,’ Garfield stars in ‘a very human story.’ By Rick Marshall Andrew Garfield Photo: MTV News In “Never Let Me Go,” director Mark Romanek’s adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s award-winning novel, Andrew Garfield plays a character whose emotions are never far from the surface, faced with the frustrating certainty of his impending death. While the basic premise for the film is set firmly in the realm of science-fiction, the narrative itself shares little in common with the average futuristic story filled with robots and advanced technology. Instead, “Never Let Me Go” offers an intimate look at three people whose lives have a very public expiration date and what they do with the time they’re given. “What is at the core of the story is a very human story, discussing what it is to have a soul, and how you prove what a soul is,” Garfield told MTV News. “Do we have souls? It’s actually [a story] about being human.” For Garfield, the film is likely to be the calm before the storm, of sorts. The actor will appear next in David Fincher’s “The Social Network” before swinging into theaters as the new star of the “Spider-Man” movie franchise in the 2012 blockbuster. Whether any of his upcoming roles will afford him the same emotional journey as “Never Let Me Go” is uncertain, but Garfield seems keen on getting the most out of his roles — like the chance to let loose with the occasional raw, primal scream. “It was intense to do,” said Garfield of the scenes in which his character, no longer able to contain his anger and frustration, erupts with a heart-wrenching wail. “I think those screams are inside all of us, I just got a chance to let mine out,” he said. “At one point during every single day, you want to do that, but you don’t express that — you keep everything locked in. And that’s OK, that’s what it is to grow and not be a baby anymore. But when you’re first born, you don’t know why you shouldn’t scream. To react in that very childish, free, expressive, instinctive way of being was kind of beautiful to do. “I think it’s kind of important that we find a room where we can do that once a week, once an hour,” he laughed. “I think that’s kind of necessary.” With “Never Let Me Go” kicking off a limited release in theaters this week, audiences have the chance to see Garfield flex his acting muscles well ahead of his mainstream gigs, but the actor seems intent on keeping perspective, describing his debut as Peter Parker as “just another role.” However, he admits that his experience during last weekend’s MTV Video Music Awards offered him a chance to observe what happens once you’re firmly rooted in the spotlight. “It was surreal, man,” he said. “It was surreal to be there, and it was surreal to be with Justin [Timberlake] in his element, so to speak. It was really exciting. I felt like I could be a fly on the wall, because no one knows who the hell I am. I could just be there and observe all this weirdness going on all around.” In the end, it might be a good thing that Garfield has “Never Let Me Go” behind him before Hollywood makes his life even more surreal, as the lessons he learned from the experience bode well for avoiding potential “weirdness.” “[The story of ‘Never Let Me Go’] is reminding us hopefully that we do have a choice to we wake up in the morning and think, ‘What do I want to do?’ Not ‘What should I do?’ and ‘What am I obliged to do?’ but ‘What do I want to do with this very unique day?’ “I think it can be a call to arms for that kind of excitement about life,” he said. “And I love the story for that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Never Let Me Go.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

MSNBC’s Wolffe Repeats Debunked Newsweek Claim of Koran Flushed Down Toilet by Guantanamo Interrogators

Appearing as a guest on Friday’s Countdown show, MSNBC political analyst Richard Wolffe – formerly of Newsweek – referred to the debunked story that was retracted by Newsweek in May 2005 which had incorrectly claimed that American interrogators at Guantanamo Bay had flushed a Koran down a toilet to intimidate Muslim prisoners. But Wolffe did not inform viewers that the story was untrue as he accused conservatives of a double standard for criticizing Newsweek’s inaccurate Koran desecration story from 2005 while not being aggressive enough in condemning Pastor Terry Jones’s declaration that he would burn the Koran on September 11. Wolffe: I’m struck all the time with this story about the experience of those of us who worked in Newsweek – not the least of whom is Mike Isikoff now at NBC News who wrote a story about the abuse of the Koran in Guantanamo Bay , and there were riots and people died and the overwhelming torrent of abuse from conservative, the echo chamber, more than elected officials I think, certainly from conservative media, was that Newsweek had lied and people died. That’s what they said. Newsweek’s erroneous story inspired riots and a significant number of deaths in 2005 before it was retracted by the magazine, although, as previously documented by the MRC, Newsweek buried its retraction. Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Friday, September 10, Countdown show on MSNBC: KEITH OLBERMANN: The Republicans, on the other hand, are sounding like almost nothing. We reported Tuesday on the deafening silence of the leaders who previously told us, “Listen to General Petraeus,” and this time they had nothing to say, and obviously some have broken their silence since, but even then most have been tentative or brief or even offensive at the analysis that, or the analogy I made to Captain Chowdhury, equating the book burning to building buildings. Do you have a perception of what Republicans are trying to do or not do about this issue? RICHARD WOLFFE: Republicans are in a strange situation now, as well. The politics is weird for them. Remember that, for all the confidence about taking about Congress, there’s a certain amount of fear in the Republican party. They’re worried about the challenge from the right from the Tea Party, which in the first incident has been directed at fellow Republicans, not at Democrats. But, you know, if you’re going to equate something with Koran burning, you know, I’m struck all the time with this story about the experience of those of us who worked in Newsweek – not the least of whom is Mike Isikoff now at NBC News who wrote a story about the abuse of the Koran in Guantanamo Bay, and there were riots and people died and the overwhelming torrent of abuse from conservative, the echo chamber, more than elected officials I think, certainly from conservative media, was that Newsweek had lied and people died. That’s what they said. And I don’t hear similar things now about someone who’s abusing, threatening to abuse the Koran and the kinds of impact that the generals, the commander in chief is saying is going to happen. So if you’re going to equate things, let’s treat apples with apples.

Tiki Barber, Traci Lynn Johnson Go Public, Clarify "Skewed" Affair Rumors

Former NFL star Tiki Barber and Traci Lynn Johnson, now his official girlfriend, sat down with Entertainment Tonight to refute rumors about their affair. Rumors, they say, which are skewed by perception. Or something. Tiki is accused of leaving pregnant wife Ginny for the 23-year-old Johnson after 11 years together. But the former Today personality says it’s not true. “It’s hard, because everything is so skewed by the coverage, and by the perception,” the longtime New York Giants running back said on ET . For her part, Traci Lynn Johnson added, “I just feel that now is the time to just make sure the rumors that were said are revealed as false.” Traci Lynn Johnson and Tiki Barber say they did nothing wrong. Tiki and Traci say that despite claims that they dated for two years before being busted, they were only friends during his marriage. He says: “We were only friends when I was still married. I was separated, out of my house so it wasn’t until then that we took things to the next level.” Traci adds: “Tiki and I were romantically involved when he was separated, plenty of people who are separated have boyfriends and girlfriends.” Tiki hopes for a normal life for his four kids: “My goal is to not have the kids suffer because of the failings of mine and my soon to be ex-wife.” “I’m just a normal guy who had a job that people cared about, and maybe there is a standard to live up to that but it’s a hard one, for anyone.” He didn’t live up to Ginny Barber’s standards, that’s for sure.

GOP Politician Confirms What Was Long Suspected: Republicans Intentionally Feed the Racism, Anger, and Paranoia of the Far Right | Tea Party and the Right | AlterNet

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/08/gop-rep-inglis-tells-cnn-about-crazy-… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7cQqLUsv3k&feature=player_embedded August 4, 2010 | It was the middle of a tough primary contest, and Rep. Bob Inglis (R-S.C.) had convened a small meeting with donors who had contributed thousands of dollars to his previous campaigns. But this year, as Inglis faced a challenge from tea party-backed Republican candidates claiming Inglis wasn't sufficiently conservative, these donors hadn't ponied up. Inglis' task: Get them back on the team. “They were upset with me,” Inglis recalls. “They are all Glenn Beck watchers.” About 90 minutes into the meeting, as he remembers it, “They say, 'Bob, what don't you get? Barack Obama is a socialist, communist Marxist who wants to destroy the American economy so he can take over as dictator. Health care is part of that. And he wants to open up the Mexican border and turn [the US] into a Muslim nation.'” Inglis didn't know how to respond. As he tells this story, the veteran lawmaker is sitting in his congressional office, which he will have to vacate in a few months. On June 22, he was defeated in the primary runoff by Spartanburg County 7th Circuit Solicitor Trey Gowdy, who had assailed Inglis for supposedly straying from his conservative roots, pointing to his vote for the bank bailout and against George W. Bush's surge in Iraq. Inglis, who served six years in Congress during the 1990s as a conservative firebrand before being reelected to the House in 2004, had also ticked off right-wingers in the state's 4th Congressional District by urging tea-party activists to “turn Glenn Beck off” and by calling on Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) to apologize for shouting “You lie!” at Obama during the president's State of the Union address. For this, Inglis, who boasts (literally) a 93 percent lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union, received the wrath of the tea party, losing to Gowdy 71 to 29 percent. In the weeks since, Inglis has criticized Republican House leaders for acquiescing to a poisonous, tea party-driven “demagoguery” that he believes will undermine the GOP's long-term credibility. And he's freely recounting his frustrating interactions with tea party types, while noting that Republican leaders are pushing rhetoric tainted with racism, that conservative activists are dabbling in anti-Semitic conspiracy theory nonsense, and that Sarah Palin celebrates ignorance. The week after that meeting with his past funders — whom he failed to bring back into the fold — Inglis asked House Republican leader John Boehner what he would have told this group of Obama-bashers. Inglis recalls what happened: [Boehner] said, “I would have told them that it's not quite that bad. We disagree with him on the issues.” I said, “Hold on Boehner, that doesn't work. Let me tell you, I tried that and it did not work.” I said [to Boehner], “If you're going to lead these people and the fearful stampede to the cliff that they're heading to, you have to turn around and say over your shoulder, 'Hey, you don't know the half of it.'” added by: toyotabedzrock

Lamar Odom Braces World for Offspring with Khloe Kardashian

A Lamar Odom/Khloe Kardashian reality show is a scary enough thought. But now the NBA star has planted an even more frightening idea in our minds: kids with the attention-starved professional celebrity. “We would love to be able to raise children together,” Odom told People magazine this week. “That’s something that happens when you become a family. Hopefully it’ll happen soon.” And, undoubtedly, cameramen will be around to chronicle every aspect of the experience. Thank goodness. Asked if the exploited son of Kourtney Kardashian helps him and Khloe prepare for the inevitable, Odom answered in the affirmative. “[Mason] definitely gives us some insight, some practice. [He] is a special little boy.” The power forward has two kids from a previous relationship. He also has two championship rings from his stint in Los Angeles. Man, we hate the Lakers!
