Rep. Alan Grayson deflects clumsy Palin attack using two things Sarah does not possess, humor and intelligence.

On Friday night, Sarah Palin came to Orlando, and attacked Rep. Alan Grayson. This is what she said: “I got to meet quite a few candidates who are lining up in a contested primary who want to take out Alan Grayson. And I think Alan Grayson — what can you say about Alan Grayson? Piper is with me tonight, so I won’t say anything about Alan Grayson that can’t be said around children. [Good one, Sarah!] But thank you, Florida, for allowing candidates in a contested primary to duke it out over ideas and principles and values, all with the same goal, and that is unseating those who have such a disconnect from the people of America. That’s what the goal is here in this race against Alan Grayson. Please fight hard, and do this for the rest of the country. Fight hard, and send a conservative to Washington, DC.” Palin, the former half-term Governor, current-nothing and future-even-less, charmed the all-Republican audience with her folksy folksiness and her homespun homespunnery. Atypically, Palin was wearing clothes that she had paid for herself. At the end of the event, she shared her recipe for mooseface pie. In response to Palin’s attack on Rep Grayson, Grayson actually complimented Palin. Grayson praised Palin for having a hand large enough to fit Grayson’s entire name on it. He thanked Palin for alleviating the growing shortage of platitudes in Central Florida. Grayson added that Palin deserved credit for getting through the entire hour-long program without quitting. Grayson also said that Palin really had mastered Palin’s imitation of Tina Fey imitating Palin. Grayson observed that Palin is the most-intelligent leader that the Republican Party has produced since George W. Bush. When asked to comment about what effect Palin’s criticism might have, Grayson pointed out, “As the Knave’s horse says in Alice in Wonderland, ‘dogs will believe anything.'” Earlier, as the Orlando Sentinel reported, Grayson said, “I’m sure Palin knows all about politics in Central Florida, since from her porch she can see Winter Park,” which is part of Grayson’s district. Grayson said that the Alaskan chillbilly was welcome to return to Central Florida anytime, as long as she brings lots of money with her, and spends it. “I look forward to an honest debate with Governor Palin on the issues, in the unlikely event that she ever learns anything about them,” Grayson added, alluding to Politifact’s “liar, liar, pants on fire” evaluation of much of what Palin has said . Scientists are studying Sarah Palin’s travel between Alaska and Florida carefully. They hope to learn more about the flight patterns of that elusive migratory species, the wild Alaskan dingbat. Perhaps somebody needs to inform Sarah that you cannot

Barf bags at the ready! Here is some video of Palin and Glenn Beck in Tulsa Oklahoma.

Oh God who can listen to her speak and still believe that she is not a huge phony? By the way, I have no idea how many people actually showed up to this event. In the video they say 4,000.

Texas Board of Education chooses ideology of education.

After three days of turbulent meetings, the Texas Board of Education on Friday approved a social studies curriculum that will put a conservative stamp on history and economics textbooks , stressing the superiority of American capitalism, questioning the Founding Fathers’ commitment to a purely secular government and presenting Republican political philosophies in a more positive light. The vote was 10 to 5 along party lines, with all the Republicans on the board voting for it. The board, whose members are elected, has influence beyond Texas because the state is one of the largest buyers of textbooks. In the digital age, however, that influence has diminished as technological advances have made it possible for publishers to tailor books to individual states. In recent years, board members have been locked in an ideological battle between a bloc of conservatives who question Darwin’s theory of evolution and believe the Founding Fathers were guided by Christian principles, and a handful of Democrats and moderate Republicans who have fought to preserve the teaching of Darwinism and the separation of church and state. Since January, Republicans on the board have passed more than 100 amendments to the 120-page curriculum standards affecting history, sociology and economics courses from elementary to high school. The standards were proposed by a panel of teachers. There are seven members of the conservative bloc on the board, but they are often joined by one of the other three Republicans on crucial votes. There were no historians, sociologists or economists consulted at the meetings, though some members of the conservative bloc held themselves out as experts on certain topics. The conservative members maintain that they are trying to correct what they see as a liberal bias among the teachers who proposed the curriculum. To that end, they made dozens of minor changes aimed at calling into question, among other things, concepts like the separation of church and state and the secular nature of the American Revolution. And the dumbing down of our American schoolchildren continues. Now if they can ensure that these children grow up on a strict diet of Dominionist Christian teaching and Fox News approved information they can rest assured of raising a generation that will eagerly follow whichever political party makes them fear for their safety the most. Forget critical thinking, forget religious diversity, and forget equal rights for all. It will be replaced with “believe, don’t think”, “Christianity is the only true path to salvation”, and “equal rights are more equal for some than for others.”

Assembly member Harriet Drummond just sent the posse after Dan "the desperado" Sullivan to retrieve the money he stole from our city’s treasury.

This is Resolution AR No. 2010-91, which Harriet Drummond, this liberal bloggers favorite Anchorage Assembly member, just submitted for consideratin on March 23. ANCHORAGE, ALASKA AR NO. 2010–91 A RESOLUTION OF THE ANCHORAGE MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY TO AUTHORIZE ENGAGING THE SERVICES OF INDEPENDENT LEGAL COUNSEL TO REVIEW AND REPORT TO THE ASSEMBLY ON THE LEGAL AND CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATIONS, IF ANY, AND THE AUTHORITY OF THE ASSEMBLY, IF ANY, REGARDING PAYMENT OF $193,000 IN MUNICIPAL FUNDS TO THE GEORGE M. SULLIVAN IRREVOCABLE LIFE INSURANCE TRUST, AND PROVIDING FOR AN APPROPRIATION. WHEREAS, pursuant to Assembly Memorandum No. AM 76-2010, the Assembly was requested by and on behalf of the Mayor to appropriate One Hundred Ninety Three Thousand Dollars ($193,000.00) from the Areawide General Fund (Fund 101) for disbursement to the George M. Sullivan Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust; and WHEREAS, Assembly Memorandum No. AM 76-2010 declared that disbursement would be made under a life insurance contract; and WHEREAS, Assembly Memorandum No. AM 76-2010 did not disclose that the George M. Sullivan Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust was administered by the Mayor in his private capacity as the son of George M. Sullivan and Trustee of the life insurance trust; and WHEREAS, Assembly Memorandum No. AM 76-2010 did not disclose that no life insurance policy was in place and no written life insurance contract existed; and WHEREAS, AR 2010-33 was passed and approved by the Assembly, on February 16, 2010, authorizing disbursement subject to receipt of proper documentation from the George M. Sullivan Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust; and WHEREAS, the full circumstances purporting to legally obligate the Municipality to make a payout of $193,000.00 in public funds are more complicated than provided in the summary under AM 76-2010; and WHEREAS, the payout of $193,000.00 in public funds for life insurance without a life insurance policy in place has raised many concerns in the mind of the public and one or more Assembly Members, including these questions: • What is the legal basis for asserting the existence of a life insurance policy or contract? • What is the legal basis for asserting a contractual obligation in the absence of a written contract? • What is the legal authority of the Salary and Emoluments Commission to authorize an employee benefit after employment has terminated? • Were the legal requirements, procedures and process under Charter Section 5.08 (c) properly followed? • What, if any, is the extent of a municipal obligation to make payment of $193,000 in life insurance without a life insurance policy? • What is the current Assembly’s authority to approve or disapprove a life insurance payment in the absence of a life insurance policy? • Is this disbursement recognized in the FY 2010 General Government Operating Budget? • What process should be used under the Ethics Code to ensure that an elected public official does not sit on both sides of a municipal transaction? • Under what public purpose are public funds being disbursed as life insurance? and WHEREAS, the current Mayor is also actively serving as Trustee of the George M. Sullivan Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust, creating a situation in which he serves on both sides of a significant financial transaction involving public funds; and WHEREAS, as Mayor, the incumbent is required to represent and act in the Municipality’s best interests; and WHEREAS, as Trustee of the George M. Sullivan Life Insurance Trust, the Trustee has a fiduciary duty to the Trust to represent and act in the best interests of the Trust and its beneficiaries; NOW, THEREFORE, the Anchorage Assembly resolves: 1. Because the events surrounding the creation and administration of a special benefit for the Honorable George M. Sullivan occurred after he was no longer in office and over the course of several mayoral successions without a full and public review before the Assembly, the Assembly authorizes an independent legal review to include the following: • The authority of the Salary and Emoluments Commission, after the mayor or other elected official has left elected office, to authorize a special life insurance benefit; • Whether a special life insurance benefit was legally effectuated for George M. Sullivan, when, and by whom or under what actions; • The legal obligations and risks to the Municipality concerning the special life insurance benefit (prior to payment); • The authority of the Mayor to request an appropriation when the Mayor also currently serves as Trustee of the George M. Sullivan Irrevocable Life Insurance Trust, without disclosure of the potential for conflict of interest; • The public purpose under which disbursement of public funds is allowed as life insurance proceeds, without a fair market life insurance policy or premium payments. • The authority of the Anchorage Assembly to approve an appropriation of public funds for this purpose. 2. The services of independent legal counsel shall be selected by the Internal Auditor, the Municipal Clerk and Assembly Counsel under a small procurement contract not to exceed [$5,000 – $10,000], and an appropriation of [$ 10,000] for this purpose is approved. 3. Until the Assembly is assured by independent legal counsel that payment of $193,000.00 in public funds is legally appropriate, the Mayor, in his private capacity as Trustee for the George M. Sullivan Irrevocable Trust, is respectfully requested to return any funds disbursed under AR 2010-33 to a special account to be held by the Municipality. PASSED AND APPROVED by the Anchorage Assembly this ______day of ____________, 2010. ______________________________ Chair ATTEST: ____________________________ Municipal Clerk Damn! It is about time SOMEBODY took Sullivan to task for emptying the city’s cash reserves while cutting services to its citizens! If you are late to the party and a little confused by this resolution just go here , here , and here and you will soon know why Anchorage residents are so angry. By the way, is it too early to draft Harriet Drummons to run for mayor of Anchorage? State Senator? How about Lisa’s job? (H/T to my friend, and fellow Alaskan blogger Phil Munger )

E-mail to the Anchorage Assembly regarding Dan Sullivan’s $193,000 payout.

Somebody sent this to my e-mail account and I thought it deserved to be seen by everyone in the hopes that it inspires other Anchorage residents to follow suit. To : Assemblyman Patrick Flynn , Assemblyman Bill Starr , Assemblywoman Debbie Ossiander , Assemblyman Matt Claman , Assemblyman Dan Coffey , Assemblywoman Elvi Gray-Jackson , Assemblywoman Sheila Selkregg , Assemblyman Mike Gutierrez , Assemblyman Chris Birch , Assemblywoman Jennifer Johnston We are told that the Municipality of Anchorage’s revenues are so tight that the rescue program of the Anchorage Fire Department has been reduced or eliminated. The reduced municipal revenues have resulted in positions not being filled as they become vacant. Other public employees may have to be laid off from work. Despite these hard financial times, the Assembly approved a $193,000 payment requested by the Municipal Attorney and Mayor Sullivan. The $193,000 is to be paid the George M. Sullivan Trust. When asked about the beneficiaries, Suzanne McVicker, will not disclose the information, stating that the information is “confidential.” For us, these circumstances raise some questions we would ask you, as an assembly member, to answer. 1. What authority gives the Salaries and Emoluments Commission, the Assembly, or Mayor, the power to agree to pay any person after their employment ends $193,000, that is not part of a previously agreed upon pension plan? 2. What legal consideration did the Municipality of Anchorage receive after January 10th, 1982 for a contract obligation to pay $193,000 to the George M. Sullivan Trust. ? 3. When did you first learn about the agreement to extend former Mayor George Sullivan’s life insurance? 4. Did anyone see an original agreement or contract and accompanying documents? 5. Do you know when the insurance company informed the city it would not cover former Mayor George Sullivan as an insured in the employee group insurance plan? 6. Who paid the premiums from 1982 to the present? Is there a record of payments made? 7. Into which city account were these premiums paid? Out of which city account was the payment disbursed? 8. Who authorized the city to collect the insurance premium in 2002? 9. If this was a binding, legal agreement, why did the payment require a vote by the Assembly? 10.Since no insurance policy had been issued, and no employment contract provision required the $193,000 payment, what makes AR No. 2010-33 not the grant of a special privilege prohibited by Article 1, Section 15 of the Alaska Constitution? 11. How is AR No. 2010-33 an appropriation of public money for a public purpose as required by Article IX, Section 6 of the Alaska Constitution? 12. Do you think that Municipal Attorney gave you sufficient and accurate information to make an informed decision? 13. Explain your affirmative vote, please. I don’t believe too many people could fault Anchorage resident for asking the questions contained in this e-mail. You know I think I will send a similar e-mail myself, and if any of you Anchorage residents are so inclined I have linked the names of each of the Assembly members to their e-mails so you can contact them directly.

E-mail to the Anchorage Assembly regarding Dan Sullivan’s $193,000 payout.

It is time for Anchorage residents to stand up and demand that Mayor Dan Sullivan show us a contract or give us back our $193,000!

Would you buy a used car from this guy? Well believe it or not we are letting him run our city! As many of you have no doubt heard, Prince Farquaad here recently took advantage of our overly passive Assembly and ran off with $193,000 of our city’s money. I wrote about it last Thursday . On Friday my friend Mel Green dug deeply into the layers of obfuscation to find that the argument given for allowing Dan to pick our city’s pockets was a shaky house of cards . In fact, according to Phil Munger, Anchorage Municipal attorney Dennis Wheeler may possibly have committed two Class B Felonies for his intentional misrepresentation of the true nature of the legality of the arrangement between the Sullivan Trust and the MOA. Look I am just fucking sick and tired of these criminal assholes treating my state, and my city, like an ATM for their own personal cash withdrawals. It seems like it has been happening since the day right after we declared statehood. Do you think Sarah Palin invented grifting in this state? Oh hell no! She was following a long and illustrious tradition of politicians taking advantage of their positions to pilfer from the state coffers. Right now Sullivan is only a mayor which means can only get his hands on the petty cash drawer. But trust me he has much loftier ambitions to get into Begich’s Senate seat and finally get his hands on some serious money! You see for politicians like Dan Sullivan, and Sarah Palin, it is not about what they can do for their city or state. Oh no. It is about what they can get for themselves while in office. We can call it “public service” if we want, but the only “public” being served is the politicians like Dan Sullivan, Sarah Palin, Don Young, Ben Stevens Tom Anderson, Vic Kohring, Pete Kott, John Cowdery, etc., etc., etc.. Sullivan believes he got away with this daring daylight robbery, but I think it is time to confront him and demand that he either show us a contract that proves the city was legally bound to make a payment to the family of George Sullivan upon his death or give us back the $193,000 so that we can pay for ambulances, keep firefighters on the job, and provide funds so that our libraries can stay open for our children. That seems fair doesn’t it? Come on Danny-boy, show us that contract!
