Linkin Park Take Guitars To New Places On A Thousand Suns

‘We sampled them and played them like you would make a hip-hop song,’ Mike Shinoda explains. By James Montgomery Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda Photo: MTV News Depending on which side of the great A Thousand Suns debate you stand, Linkin Park ‘s use of guitars on the album (or, more specifically, the general lack of them) is either a brilliant, ballsy move or a total letdown. After all, LP’s near-trademark guitar tone — something between a rocket-launcher and a firework, explosive, arching and incendiary — was a big part of what made them one of the hugest rock acts on the planet, and on Suns, it’s largely absent, replaced instead with a myriad of effects-laden squelches and rumblings. How you feel about that fact will affect how you feel about the album itself. And, yes, Linkin Park are aware of that — they’ve been following the debate rather closely, in fact. “I heard a lot of comments about how certain songs on the record … fans were hearing them and going, ‘Wow, those are so heavy!’ and I even caught people talking about guitar on a song like ‘Wretches and Kings,’ for example, and somebody else would call them out, be like, ‘Actually, I don’t even think that’s guitar. I think it’s some kind of sample or something,’ ” LP’s Mike Shinoda told MTV News. “We’ve been getting a lot of questions on that. Our approach on that stuff has been really something different for us. We didn’t just plug the PRS [guitar] into the Mesa amp; it was like, we played these guitars through all these different effects, and we put them in the computer and we sampled them and played them like you would make a hip-hop song.” And those new sonic ideas — while alienating to some — were also the key building blocks to A Thousand Suns. Linkin Park knew they were taking a risk, but in the end, it was worth it. After all, they’ve walked away with perhaps the first major-label rock record in recent memory that doesn’t sound like a major-label thing. Or really, a rock record, for that matter. “Loosening that process up really enabled us to make some sounds that felt really fresh to us,” Shinoda said. “And [it] made the songs better.” What do you think of Linkin Park’s new sound? Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns Leaves The Past Behind

‘The concepts blend human ideas with technology,’ Mike Shinoda says of new album. By James Montgomery Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington Photo: MTV News Linkin Park ‘s new A Thousand Suns album is a lot of things, most of which have nothing to do with their previous (mega-selling) efforts. By their own admission, the band spent nearly two years attempting to leave their past behind. To that end, it’s not a stretch to say they succeeded. The album, which hit stores Tuesday (September 14), is the band’s most divisive. But there’s one thing seemingly everyone can agree on: From this point forward, Linkin Park will never be the same band again. And though Suns represents the band at a crossroads, that doesn’t mean they abandoned everything that got them to this point. Quite the opposite, in fact. They’ve just taken the old and reworked it through the prism of the new.

Bruno Mars Is ‘100 Percent’ Done With Debut LP

The B.o.B, Travie McCoy collaborator won’t reveal his Doo-Wops & Hooligans guest stars. By Jayson Rodriguez Bruno Mars Photo: MTV News Bruno Mars is a busy man these days. The upstart singer/producer has been promoting his EP, It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, writing and producing hits for others ( Cee-Lo’s “F— You” ) and hitting the stage left and right with collaborators like B.o.B and Travie McCoy . The Hawaii-born Mars also found time to finish his forthcoming debut album, tentatively titled Doo-Wops & Hooligans. The project is “100 percent” done, the “Nothin’ on You” singer told MTV News, adding that the set is influenced by his live performances. “Every time we go into the studio we got to think about, ‘OK, we’re gonna perform this song.’ We think, ‘How are we gonna keep these people’s attention?’ ” he explained. “So throughout the whole song, it never stops. It keeps moving. And we always flip up our show. Whenever we do our shows, you might not hear the album version. You’ll get the live version.” The singer’s freshman album has no release day as of press time, and he’s not revealing much in terms of details. He gave only a small hint regarding one of the guests on the project: “They have dreads.” “I got Whoopi Goldberg on my album, y’all,” he said, joking. Although the singer is enjoying his recent success, earlier this year he remarked how long his rise to the top has actually been. “The journey wasn’t short at all — it was trial and error and trial and error,” he said. “It was just back and forth, man. But once ‘Nothin’ on You’ blew up, I had these songs in my back pocket, and the label thought it’d be a good time to give people a little taste of what they’re gonna get with the album. The EP came together real nice; you’re gonna get a nice effect of what’s in store.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Bruno Mars Related Artists Bruno Mars

The “Camp Rock 2” star turned 18 on Friday (August 20) and she admits she has no idea what to wish for. But she does know exactly how she wants to spend it. “I’m turning 18, yeah. I would love to … I don’t know! I would love to just have fun with my friends,” she told MTV News at the New York premiere this week of “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam,” where co-star Joe Jonas showed off his own 21st birthday present . “I don’t get to see my friends a lot, so a lot of my friends are coming out [to visit],” said Lovato, who’ll be performing in the New York area this weekend. “My family flew out. I’m just having a good time with them.” So what does she want now that she’s legal? “I have everything I could possibly want,” she told us. “Everyone’s asking me, ‘What do you want for you birthday?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t know! Handbags?’ Like, I have everything I could want. I’m just thankful.” Well, it turns out her pals, the Jonas Brothers, already know what they’re getting for her. “It’s Demi’s birthday in a couple days, like two days,” Nick said. “I’m gonna get her… I can’t say ’cause I do have the gift. We have it. We have it somewhere.” “She’s in hearing distance,” Kevin warned of keeping the gift under wraps before Joe let the cat out of the bag. “[We got her a] NASA space shuttle. ‘The Expendables’ Stars Talk Sequel

‘I would love to come back. Thank god I don’t die,’ laughed Terry Crews. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Sylvester Stallone in “The Expendables” Sylvester Stallone knows exactly where he’s going to take the Expendables, his band of grizzled mercenaries , now that their flick has grossed $35 million over its opening weekend: back to the multiplex for a sequel. And Sly’s “Expendables” co-stars are primed and ready to go, as they told MTV News when we caught up with them at Comic-Con last month. “I would love to come back. Thank god I don’t die,” laughed Terry Crews. “I’m ready to come back and do another.” Dolph Lundgren also expressed his desire to return for a second installment, which Stallone has said is already plotted out in his mind. Sly is hoping that with Arnold Schwarzenegger leaving the California governor’s mansion early next year, the action hero will return to “Expendables” territory, perhaps for a meatier role this time. “If this works, I would love to get him in the next one,” Stallone told us. “I really think so. He’s been out of the limelight a long time, and I think this is the kind of film that would be a nice intro.” Sly convinced Arnie to do it once; there’s no reason to think he can’t do it again. There’s just something magnetic about Stallone, as interviews with his co-stars made clear. Again and again during our Comic-Con chats, the cast spoke effusively about Sly’s leadership skills on-set. “With all this testosterone and all this adrenaline walking around, he kept it all in check,” laughed Steve Austin. Added Crews, “There’s no other person on the planet who could have put something like this [together] except for Sylvester Stallone. He created the whole summer tent pole as we know it. To be involved and to be with these guys, these legends, the whole thing, I’m just honored.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Expendables.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

The conversation quickly turned to Joe’s big 21st birthday this Sunday. “Besides a dog, I don’t know,” he said when asked about his plans. “That’s all I kind of wanted. Demi and the film’s cast started the party off with their “Camp Rock 2” track “It’s On.” Then the JoBros hit the stage and sang their own soundtrack song “Heart and Soul,” telling the crowd, “Let’s do this thing. You guys can be louder than that! Come on now!” The set came to an end with the Demi and Joe breakup ballad “Wouldn’t Change a Thing.” The morning wasn’t just about “Camp Rock 2” songs. The brothers and Lovato also revealed which superpowers they wished they had. Demi said, “My ideal superpower? I wish I could teleport, just snap my fingers and be in a room.” Nick’s? “I think flying would be good,” he said.
