Demi Lovato Calls ‘Skyscraper’ Her ‘Cry For Help’

‘That video was an emotional release for me, like therapy,’ she tells E! News. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato in her “Skyscraper” video Photo: Hollywood Records Demi Lovato is feeling better these days. Her ups and downs are evident in her latest single, “Skyscraper,” which she said helped her confront her issues before she landed in treatment late last fall. She recorded two versions — one last year during her darker days and one after she left treatment — but, she told E! News , “It just didn’t feel the same, so we kept the original one. For me it was … so symbolic, it being the song I recorded before treatment and yet it was providing a message. It’s so crazy the way things played out, that it ended up being my symbol and it represented what I’m trying to spread the word about: getting help and rising above any issues that [I and] my fans are dealing with.” As emotionally draining as it was to record the track, she said it also hurt her physically to be in the studio working on it. “I was doubled over, just in pain. I remember thinking, ‘This is kind of my cry for help’ back then, because I hadn’t spoken to anyone about these issues,” she said in the interview with Ryan Seacrest. “And I hadn’t gotten the help that I needed.” Those emotions are also touched on in the video, which will be released this week . “That video was an emotional release for me, like therapy. … I kept crying, I was so emotionally invested. … That’s when I realized, that’s what music videos are all about. “There were so many things that represented my addictions and eating disorders and self-harm,” she added about the video. “When I’m unraveling this black fabric … it was the toxicity that took over my mind for so long, that oozed out of every pore that I had because I was suffering inside. … I’m taking it off and walking on broken glass and powering through it.” Lovato is very open about the fact that, while she isn’t hurting herself anymore, she still isn’t 100 percent. “I’m not going to be perfect, but … if I can make it through the day, that’s all that matters,” she said. “It’s a daily journey, and it’s definitely going to be a struggle that I’ll have to deal with for the rest of my life.” Share your well-wishes for Demi in the comments below. ‘Game Of Thrones’ Star Sean Bean Shares In Fans’ Shock

Actor talks about his initial reaction to the ‘heroic’ turn of events in ‘Baelor.’ Spoiler alert! By Kara Warner Sean Bean in “Game of Thrones” Photo: Helen Sloan/ HBO So how about Sunday night’s episode of “Game of Thrones” ? To say that it was a doozy barely scratches the surface of all the shameless double-crossing and bloodshed that occurred. SPOILER ALERT! : For those who haven’t yet watched “Baelor” (or read the novel), do not read any further. MAJOR, major spoilers ahead. A recap can hardly do justice to the episode’s gruesome events, which have been adapted quite faithfully from author George R.R. Martin’s brilliant plot twists and turns, but we can provide you with a video interview of “Game of Thrones” star Sean Bean talking about the big “event.” “It’s quite heroic, I suppose,” Bean told MTV News of the lead into his character’s shocking death scene. “I didn’t just get knocked off and nobody notices. Plenty of people noticed,” he said with a smile. “It was a good one.” Bean said that when he read Martin’s book, Ned Stark’s death was as much of a shock to him as anyone. “He’s such a predominant character, straight through all of it, and you think, ‘Wait a minute, what’s happening?’ He’s obviously been betrayed left and right and center, but you never thought it would come to this,” he admitted. “Even the shock on his face before it happens it’s like, ‘But we made a deal.’ It’s a pretty awful ending and the kids are watching as well.” Bean said that the short-lived role was amazing to play, and the filming of his final scene was appropriately epic and ambitious. “We were in Malta in the middle of a big square,” he recalled. “A big piazza with hundreds and hundreds of people on a raised platform, I’m making a last speech, I have my hands tied behind back. I kind of say that I have betrayed the realm and I have been a traitor in order to save my children. … It’s real heartbreaking stuff.” But as Martin fans well know, this doesn’t mean the end of shocking twists in the series, because, as Cersei Lannister put it, “In the game of thrones, you win, or you die.” What did you think of this shocking turn of events? Lil Wayne’s Musical Director Explains Science Of ‘Unplugged’ Set List

‘Wayne chooses what’s going on. He’s the boss,’ Gil Smith tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: MTV On his 2008 tour Lil Wayne proclaimed that he was music. Just in case there are any doubters, Weezy is currently reassuring fans on his I Am Still Music Tour . And on Sunday Lil Tunechi once again staked his claim and put his diversified musical prowess on display on The show featured Wayne’s hardcore rap bars on “A Milli,” his rock-out howl on “Drop the World” and some R&B stylings on his “How to Love”/ “Lollipop” mashup. One of the forces behind Weezy’s growth is his musical director, Gil Smith, who has been touring with the Young Money CEO since 2008 and helped put together the set list for Wayne’s “Unplugged” special. “It was crazy. We were on tour on the first leg of the I Am Still Music Tour and it just came in an e-mail: ‘Wayne has unplugged,’ ” Smith told MTV News. “As a band we kind of get together and we get excited about stuff like that. So we start thinking about which songs he could do.” Choosing from the Cash Money star’s catalog of music is no easy feat, especially when you have to satisfy an intimate audience of fans as well as the millions of folks expected to watch on television. “Thankfully we’re familiar with his repertoire, having been on the road with him,” Smith said. “We’re familiar with what songs he loves, what songs are important to him, and then also wanting to incorporate Tha Carter IV, which is being released this summer.” What Smith and his team ended up with were different segments of a show: one for longtime fans, another to showcase new music from Tha Carter IV and then lastly some random favorites. The next step was taking the ideas to Team Weezy. “As far as working with Wayne’s management, Tez, he is very helpful in putting together the set list,” Smith said. “Other than that it’s Wayne. He chooses what’s going on. He’s the boss.” With Wayne’s approval, songs like “Mr. Carter” off of Tha Carter III, “Hustler’s Muzik” from Tha Carter II and brand-new tracks like “How to Love,” “6 Foot, 7 Foot” and the previously unheard “Nightmares of the Bottom” ultimately made the cut, thanks to Gil Smith and of course Lil Wayne. Cali Swag District’s Debut, The Kickback, Drops July 12

Album’s release comes just two months after the tragic death of group member M-Bone, who’ll be featured on the cover. By Rob Markman Cali Swag District Photo: MTV News On July 12, hip-hop group Cali Swag District will release their debut album in memory of their fallen member, M-Bone. The Kickback, distributed by Sony RED, will feature 15 tracks including the group’s 2010 platinum hit “Teach Me How to Dougie” and their next official single, “Burn Out (Drive Fast).” The release will come just two months after CSD’s Mante “M-Bone” Talbert was tragically gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Inglewood, California. “We’re sure that M-Bone is doin’ the Dougie at the gates of heaven, and we know he would want us to keep the movement goin’ here,” CSD’s Yung said in a press release issued to MTV News. The three remaining members of Cali Swag told MTV News that they had no plans to replace M-Bone , and though the energetic dancer was laid to rest on May 27, he will still appear on the cover to The Kickback. Bone is shown doing a handstand on the album’s cover while the rest of CSD look on in amazement. “We’re just focused on staying positive and doing what we were doing prior to this incident,” CSD’s C-Smoove told MTV News recently. “Basically, make M-Bone’s legacy and his name live on through us forever, as long as we do it. We don’t feel like this is a time for us to stop. We feel like this is a time for us to go harder.” At approximately 10:30 p.m. PT on May 15, police were called to the 400 block of La Brea Avenue in Inglewood. When they arrived on the scene, they founded Talbert seated in the driver’s seat of his vehicle with two gunshot wounds to the head. Witness accounts confirm that a gunman pulled up alongside M-Bone in a separate vehicle and let off at least two rounds. Since his death, artists including Jermaine Dupri, B.o.B and New Boyz have spoken out, remembering M-Bone’s positive energy and penchant for dancing. The Inglewood Police Department is asking anyone with information regarding the murder of Mante “M-Bone” Talbert to come forward and call its homicide division at (310) 412-5246 or its 24-hour anonymous hot line at (888) 41-CRIME (888-412-7463). Nas Talks Making Peace With Mobb Deep’s Prodigy

‘I guess he just wanted to clear the air on some past things that don’t mean anything today,’ Nas says of Prodigy’s post-jail phone call. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nas Photo: MTV News The relationship between Queens rappers Prodigy and Nas has had its fair share of ups and downs. There have been collaborations and dis records over the years, and in the new book “My Infamous Life,” Mobb Deep’s Prodigy touched on his relationship with God’s Son, starting with the first time they met during a battle in New York’s Queensbridge housing project. In a recent interview, Prodigy told MTV News how he called Nas to make peace after he was released from his three-year prison bid this past March. During an exclusive sit-down with Sway, the Illmatic rapper spoke about P’s call. “He called me as soon as he got out of jail; he got in touch with me. We talked about some things,” Nas said. “I didn’t know he had a book. He didn’t tell me that. I guess he just wanted to clear the air on some past things that don’t mean anything today.” After patching things up, Nas agreed to collaborate with Prodigy on the Mobb Deep record “Dog Sh–,” which was leaked onto the Internet in April. “I just jumped on the record; put that to the past or whatever ill feelings he had towards me,” Nas told Sway. “I think he was misinformed about things, like I was a negative guy or like I was trying to harm him in any kind of way. I think maybe he just grew up a little bit.” Prodigy was proud to continue the Nas/ Mobb Deep legacy. “When we make songs together, man, it’s another level, it’s incredible music. It just gives you that feeling, like nostalgia almost,” Prodigy said of the Mobb and Nas’ past collaborations. “The music is just real powerful when Mobb Deep and Nas work together. So I said, ‘We gotta keep that feeling going, man. We would be fools to stop doing that because of whatever petty bullsh– that was going on.’ ” With “Dog Sh–” in the can, Nas wasn’t sure if and when any more Mobb Deep collaborations would surface. “At the moment, I just got back into the studio, and my focus right now has been just starting to work on the album, so who knows?” he said. As far as Prodigy’s book, Esco didn’t even know it existed, though he is mentioned in it quite a bit. While Prodigy insists that all of his accounts of Nas were in a positive light, the QB MC doesn’t seemed bothered either way and gave general advice for any would-be authors. “Tell the truth if you’re gonna write a book. Tell the truth to the best of your ability, that’s all I would say to anybody. Just tell the truth,” he said. “Do what you wanna do, I had books written about me before, and it is what it is.” Are you glad Nas and Mobb Deep have put the past behind them? Taylor Swift To Turn Speak Now Rehearsal Into Charity Event

Country hitmaker will donate ticket sales from May 21 Speak Now Tour dress rehearsal in Nashville to tornado relief. By Mawuse Ziegbe Taylor Swift Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Taylor Swift will give fans an early taste of her upcoming Speak Now Tour for a very good cause. The country darling announced on Friday (May 6) that she will allow fans to buy tickets to the final dress rehearsal of her tour to benefit communities devastated by tornadoes in the South in late April. According to the Associated Press, Swift has been preparing for her upcoming trek over the past five weeks at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, which will be the site of the “Speak Now … Help Now” benefit. Although the chart-topper is used to speaking frankly about her personal life in her music, Swift has never invited fans to check out how she gears up for her live shows. The songstress explained that witnessing the havoc-wreaking storms while putting the Speak Now Tour together inspired her to switch things up and take action. “I was watching the coverage of the tornadoes backstage at rehearsals, and I wanted to do something for the families affected by the damage,” Swift told the AP. “I’ve never opened a rehearsal to the public before, but I felt that inviting my fans to the last rehearsal for the Speak Now Tour would be a great way to raise money.” The songbird added that the benefit will be different from her other live appearances, as she is still hammering out the kinks of the production. “We will probably still be doing some fine-tuning to the show that night, since this will be a true rehearsal, but I feel like it is so important for me and my fans to help if we can,” she said. Swift’s Speak Now Tour is slated to kick off May 27 in Omaha, Nebraska, but before she hits the road, the Grammy-winning superstar is set to unveil her latest video, “Mean,” on Friday night (May 6) on CMT and CMT.com at 10 p.m. ET. Jennifer Lopez Says She ‘Lucked Out’ With Lady Gaga Tracks

J.Lo talks about the tunes Gaga helped write and produce on her new Love? album. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Jennifer Lopez Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images Jennifer Lopez came onto the scene as a dance princess, throwing millennium parties while “Waiting for Tonight” and frolicking on the beach declaring that “My Love Don’t Cost a Thing.” Well, it’s now 2011 and not that much has changed for J.Lo. She still wants her fans to shake their fannies while she sings about the ups and downs of love. This time around, however, she got some help from this millennium’s biggest pop princess, Lady Gaga — along with frequent Gaga collaborator/producer RedOne — for the just-released Love? album. “I think RedOne’s sound is very specific, but he also can be very individual for each artist that he works with, which I like, but there’s still kind of a commonality in it,” J.Lo said. “But it’s him. He makes a record sound so big and important … When he would play me different tracks and even the beginnings of ideas and when he told me, ‘Actually I worked with Gaga on this,’ and I was like, ‘Really? That’s awesome. Is it OK?’ and he [was] like, ‘Yeah, yeah.’ You know, they write and produce together a lot. So, it was exciting. I kind of just lucked out on that one.” But, there is a lot more to the album than the few tracks featuring Gaga’s golden touch. Love? also is a complete work of art that in a way, Lopez says, she’s been working on for most of her life. “I’ve been making this album maybe for a couple years now,” she said. “It’s been quite a process, but I’ve been saying lately that I’ve been actually making this record since I was 13 years old — the first time I fell in love — because it’s true, all the thoughts and all the things that went into this album were questions and things that I’ve had over the years … Love is a very complex topic and I’ve been singing about it since my first album, and this was kind of the culmination of that.” Sure, J.Lo is not the same girl she was back then, and she knows that. “I wanted to pose some questions and get the dialogue going about love,” she added. “I wanted to make a great dance, rhythmic album, as well … and we did that. I had great producers … who helped me do that, helped take me and put it into this generation of music with all of that [and] we still were able to do that.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Jennifer Lopez Related Artists Jennifer Lopez

‘Dancing With The Stars’ Isn’t Easier With Youth, Chelsea Kane Says

‘So far, some of our oldest contestants have been at the top of the leader board,’ the Disney star tells MTV News. By Kelley L. Carter Chelsea Kane Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — Age ain’t nothing but a number for Chelsea Kane. The 22-year-old Disney star and current “Dancing With the Stars” contestant is paired up with 24-year-old Mark Ballas, which makes the pair among the youngest on the show this season. But taking a look at how the scoring has been going so far, Kane points out, that means nothing. “Sometimes I feel like it’s a disadvantage, in the sense where I think people automatically assume because we’re younger that we’re going to pick up the choreography easier and that we have this upper hand in the competition,” Kane told MTV News of her age. “Which I don’t think is the case at all. We’re three dances in, and so far some of our oldest contestants have been at the top of the leader board. I don’t think anything can prepare you for this experience.” So that’s the downside to being younger. The upside? Kane laughs that she and Ballas can exist off of little sleep. “The nice part is that I feel like we’re able to go with less sleep, and we like to go out and still have fun and we don’t have families or anything to worry about yet! So that’s the advantage. We get to enjoy this,” she said, laughing. When MTV News caught up with the pair at their rehearsal for Monday night’s (April 11) dance, we asked them to so size up their competition. The front-runner they’re most worried about is Ralph Macchio, who is 49. “I feel like Ralph is really going to be a challenge, just because he works so hard,” Kane said. “Every time we come to the studio, he’s been here all day, takes no breaks, whereas Mark and I are in the kitchen eating Ralph’s anniversary cake that he had dropped off. We’re so bad!” Do you think being young is an advantage on “Dancing With the Stars”? Let us know in the comments!

‘The Dance Scene’ Shows ‘Music Still Matters,’ Laurieann Gibson Says

Lady Gaga’s creative director tells MTV News why she agreed to do her own reality show. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa WhiteWolf Laurieann Gibson Photo: MTV News Laurieann Gibson debuted her new E! reality show, “The Dance Scene,” on Sunday night, and the premiere was an inside look at what it’s like to be one of the most sought-after choreographers in the game. Gibson — who is also Lady Gaga’s creative director — is seen working with A-listers Katy Perry and Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles as they prepare for VH1’s “Divas Live” in the first episode. Before her E! show, Gibson had made appearances on reality shows like “So You Think You Can Dance,” MTV’s “Making the Band” and “Skating With the Stars.” When MTV News caught up with her, Gibson said she was drawn to the idea of having her own reality show because she wanted fans to see that there’s still real artistry in pop music. “I think it’s the only reason why I did the show, was because after being in the music industry for so long and loving music and wanting real artists and real talent to take the forefront as opposed to a premeditated idea of what an artist is based on — a corporate mind-set or a person — that a piece of music or a piece of dance is birthed out of your belly,” she explained. “I want the music to get back into the hands of the people. I wanted them to know that if they watch the show and they see me doubt or fear or fight through adversity or some dream-slayer and they can watch and be inspired that they can make it,” Gibson added. “The music still matters, that the dance still matters, that the gift still matters.” The show goes deep into Gibson’s life and follows her crew of dancers and choreographers, all of whom work from her Boom Kack studios. The dance maven is known for her tough approach, and she thinks the show, which is executive-produced by Ryan Seacrest, will show another side of Gaga’s trusted right-hand lady. “I think they’re gonna be surprised to know the truth to how I’ve gotten where I’ve gotten and what I’ve been through,” Gibson told us. “Because I seem so tough and I am so tough [but] they’re going to see another side of me. I’m still a little girl.” What do you think of Laurieann’s new E! show? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Lady Gaga Creative Director Laurieann Gibson
