As Cullen family ringleader Carlisle, Peter Facinelli has faced off with the Volturi, rallied his clan to keep Bella and Edward safe and, in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1 , walks a tightrope trying to keep Bella unharmed during her unexpected pregnancy. Facinelli talked with Movieline about working with writer/director Bill Condon and Stephenie Meyer on the final two films and the daunting task of shooting them — at the junket for the film earlier in the day, Facinelli was still marveling at the screenplay’s heft.

Movie experts weigh in on why Ghostface didn’t scare up impressive returns for the franchise. By Eric Ditzian Courteney Cox in “Scream 4” Photo: Gemma La Mana/ Dimension Films Unlike Indiana Jones and John McClane, Ghostface has not aged particularly well. While Indy’s franchise and McClane’s “Die Hard” films took lengthy breaks from the multiplex and returned with impressive box-office debuts, “Scream 4” got off to a start that fell on the low end of projections. The horror flick’s $19.3 million debut on more than 4,400 screens was, in fact, a major fall from the previous installment in 2000, which Box Office Mojo points out was $52 million when adjusted for ticket-price inflation. While insiders were hardly expecting “Scream 4” to live up to the performance of the original trilogy, the movie nonetheless failed to widely reconnect with moviegoers. So what happened? A combination of factors, according to industry experts, conspired to hold back the film and cast doubt on the idea that the Weinstein Company will be able to launch a fresh “Scream” trilogy. “Part of the reason that ‘Scream 4’ didn’t connect with audiences the way previous installments have is because of the overall climate change of horror films over the last decade,” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “Whereas grisly deaths, bloodbaths and torture porn were once the order of the day, creepy and spooky — ‘Paranormal Activity,’ ‘Insidious’ — seem to be what horror audiences die for these days.” What’s more, it wasn’t just a matter of failing to link up with horror-movie trends but with broader changes in the entertainment landscape. ” ‘Scream’ was a pop-culture phenomenon of the late ’90s and it lost its relevancy soon after,” said Gitesh Pandya, editor of BoxOfficeGuru.com, pointing to that decade’s often heavily ironic humor. And then there’s a matter of Ghostface himself, a recognizable killer, to be sure, but one who’s by design changeable and thus potentially less iconic than other horror-movie villains. “The fact that Ghostface is a different person from movie to movie is both a good thing and a bad thing,” said Phil Contrino, editor of BoxOffice.com. “It creates suspense, but it also stops the character from becoming as powerful as Freddy Krueger or Michael Myers.” To all these issues add in the generally weak critical assessment, and you’ve got a recipe for a perfectly fine box-office debut but one that’s hardly impressive. While some insiders suspect the weak opening will dash plans to kick-start a new trilogy, others expect overseas ticket sales to compensate for subpar domestic business, increasing the likelihood of “Scream 5” shifting into production down the road. “This could end up grossing $100 million worldwide, which may lead to another sequel or reboot despite its lackluster Stateside debut,” Bock said. “Ghostface will likely terrorize audiences again, because the number-one rule for franchise fright flicks is: You can never keep a horror icon buried for long.” What did you think of “Scream 4”? Nikki Reed, Facinelli’s ‘Twilight’ co-star and McDonald’s girlfriend, brought the pair together for indie film’s soundtrack. By Kara Warner Peter Facinelli Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images When he hasn’t been busy with the box-office-dominating “Twilight” movies or Showtime’s hit show “Nurse Jackie,” Peter Facinelli has been working on a passion project, “Loosies,” an independent film he wrote, produced and stars in. In addition to enlisting a high-caliber crew of actors for the project, MTV News has exclusively learned that Facinelli has teamed up with a very special musician to contribute music to the film’s soundtrack: recent “American Idol” castoff Paul McDonald . We caught up with Facinelli on Monday (April 18) to get the scoop on his exciting collaboration. “I was telling Nikki [Reed, McDonald’s girlfriend and Facinelli’s ‘Twilight’ co-star] I was looking for music for my movie, and she said, ‘You should look through Paul’s stuff,’ ” Facinelli recalled. “She was a big fan of his, I heard, and I thought it really worked for my movie, so I played some tracks over it, where we had temp tracks, and it just all worked. So I reached out to Paul, I sent him the movie, and he enjoyed it a lot, and he said he wanted to be a part of it, which I was stoked.” Facinelli added that McDonald’s original music is really inspirational and fit well with what he was doing on “Loosies.” “He has a band, and his band stuff is very different then what he was doing on ‘American Idol,’ ” Facinelli said. “I heard him on ‘American Idol,’ and I thought he was great, but when I heard the band, it’s very distinct and has a voice of its own, and I like the originality of it,” he explained. “So we’ll probably use most of the music from the two albums he has out now on iTunes,” which were recorded under the band names the Grand Magnolias and High Tide Blues. “Loosies” revolves around a pickpocket in New York, caught up in a fast-paced, hustlin’ lifestyle, until he is confronted by a woman with whom he had a one-night stand and is now pregnant. Facinelli is putting the finishing touches on the film before setting out to find distribution and hopefully a theatrical release. ‘For some reason, once they put those contact lenses in, you look very statuesque,’ actor says on the Golden Globes red carpet. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Peter Facinelli Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images We’ve had a preview of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart getting sexy as Edward and Bella on their honeymoon in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” and now Cullen patriarch Peter Facinelli has some more secrets from the movie’s set. When MTV News caught up with Facinelli on the Golden Globes red carpet on Sunday (January 16), he revealed what Stewart’s Bella is like as a vampire. “She’s doing really well. She looks fantastic,” he raved about Stewart’s transition to a vampire for the final films in the series. “For some reason, once they put those contact lenses in, you look very statuesque.” Facinelli wouldn’t go into detail about shooting the last two films in the franchise with director Bill Condon and the rest of the “Breaking Dawn” crew, but he did admit that things have been very action-packed. “We’ve been shooting the last two weeks with a lot of vampires,” he said. “I don’t want to give away too much, but if you’ve read the books, it’s the standoff with lots of vampires in play. There’s like 70 people going through the works at once. It’s a little maddening, but fun. “We shot pretty much the ending of the two movies the other day,” he added about how much time the cast has left on-set. “But we shoot until mid-April.” MTV News recently spoke to Facinelli’s co-star Ashley Greene about that fight sequence against the Volturi, and she expressed her excitement about it as well. “As a cast, we like to do as many of our own stunts as possible, so it’s fun and challenging to shoot those scenes,” she said. “Jeff Imada, the stunt coordinator, is such a blast to work with as well. I’m learning so much from him.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” We’ve got the Golden Globes covered! ‘Seeing the whole Cullen tribe just roll up their sleeves and go to town? That’s pretty exciting,’ he tells MTV News. By Larry Carroll, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Peter Facinelli backstage at the 2010 Movie Awards Photo: MTV News UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Take a deep breath, sit down and get ready for some news that might make you angry, folks: Somebody out there in the world has seen “Eclipse” — and it’s not you. “I just saw it two days ago,” a hot new film reviewer who simply bills himself as “The Fatch” told us Sunday at the MTV Movie Awards . “To see that movie [was amazing]; it exceeded all my expectations.” OK, in case you haven’t figured it out yet, “The Fatch” is actually Peter Facinelli. And he saw the film because he has one key advantage over ordinary people like ourselves: He plays family patriarch Dr. Carlisle Cullen in the “Twilight” films. So, needless to say, he’s got a few strings he can pull from time to time. “I love the battle sequence,” Facinelli said of his favorite scene in the movie, a briefly-glimpsed-in-the-trailers climax that has Jasper, Emmett, Alice and the rest throwing down alongside werewolves as they take on a ravenous army of newborn vampires. “I’ve got to tell ya — seeing the whole Cullen tribe just roll up their sleeves and go to town? That’s pretty exciting.” It’s no secret that the “Twilight” stars love the MTV Movie Awards and have annually made the trek — not just to pick up some Golden Popcorn, but also to re-energize themselves with a powerful reminder of why they’re working so hard on this massive franchise. According to Facinelli, Sunday was another lesson on why it’s time to get to work promoting “Eclipse” and then dive right into “Breaking Dawn” madness. “It’s all the fans. I mean, I’m humbly overwhelmed by their support and love of these movies,” Facinelli marveled. “I hope they enjoy ‘Eclipse’ just as much, if not more. It’s my favorite book of the series, and it was a high-water mark for me going in.” Relive the wildest, funniest and most-jaw-dropping moments of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, watch revealing red-carpet interviews and get exclusive movie clips after the show at MovieAwards.MTV.com .
