Decemberists Lock Down First Billboard #1

Social Distortion and the Script also debut in the top five. By Gil Kaufman The Decemberists’ The King Is Dead Photo: Capitol/ EMI A week after Cake landed their first #1 debut , the Decemberists also put up their best-ever career numbers, easily taking over the top spot on the Billboard 200 with a strong debut for their most straightforward work to date, The King Is Dead. The big debut crushes their previous chart best, notched in 2009 when their rock opera The Hazards of Love moved 19,000 copies in its first week and came in at #14. The King smashes that debut figure by selling nearly 94,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, halting the string of record-low #1 sales figures. The Decemberists lead a stampede of new names into the top five, which also includes the Kidz Bop 19 collection at #2 (70,000); Science & Faith, the latest from Irish soft rockers the Script (#3, 49,000); a career-best bow for punk lifers Social Distortion with Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes (#4, 46,000); and a #5 debut for Allman Brothers Band singer Gregg Allman for his first solo album in 14 years, Low Country Blues (36,000). The rest of the top 10: Bruno Mars , Doo-Wops & Hooligans (#6, 34,000), Katy Perry , Teenage Dream (#7, 33,000), Taylor Swift , Speak Now (#8, 31,000), Nicki Minaj , Pink Friday (#9, 28,000) and Mumford & Sons , Sigh No More (27,000). Just outside the top 10 at #11 is the third album from soft rocker James Blunt , Some Kind of Trouble (26,000). With plans to unleash at least two more albums by summer, Kanye West ‘s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy drops six spots to #16 on sales of 22,000 as West comes within spitting distance of one million units sold. Speaking of Cake , the quirky indie rockers drop steeply from the top, plunging 24 spots in week two to #25 as sales of Showroom of Compassion declined 67 percent to 15,000. Also facing a big comedown is last week’s #2 album, Cage the Elephant ‘s Thank You, Happy Birthday, which falls 26 spots to #28 on sales of 14,000. On the heels of a Golden Globe win and just before receiving an Oscar nomination, the Trent Reznor-helmed soundtrack to “The Social Network” climbs 23 slots to #49 as business picked up by 52 percent (9,000). The Decemberists also triumph on the iTunes albums chart, taking over the #1 spot, followed by the Script, Perry, Mumford & Sons, Social D, Blunt, the “Country Strong” soundtrack, Mars, West and Swift. The iTunes singles chart still belongs to Mars’ “Grenade,” which, despite a Steelers playoff win, beats out Wiz Khalifa ‘s “Black and Yellow,” which is followed by Britney Spears ‘ “Hold It Against Me,” Enrique Iglesias ‘ “Tonight,” Perry’s “Firework,” Pink ‘s “F—in’ Perfect” and Pitbull ‘s “Hey Baby.” Rounding out the top 10 are Diddy-Dirty Money with “Coming Home,” the Black Eyed Peas with “The Time (Dirty Bit)” and Ke$ha ‘s “We R Who We R.” The top 10 should remain mostly unchanged next week, as the only notable releases include new albums from Iron & Wine , Cold War Kids , Amos Lee and David Guetta . Paramore Fans Call MTV News’ ‘Last Word’ Sit-Down ‘Epic’

‘It [shows] how much we mean to Paramore,’ one fan says of candid live stream interview with the band. By Mawuse Ziegbe Paramore’s Taylor York, Hayley Williams and Jeremy Davis Photo: MTV News After the Farro brothers’ abrupt departure from Paramore , the remaining members candidly opened up about the collective’s past, present and future during . And after weeks of largely being in the dark about the true nature of the split because of competing statements from both sides, fans were glad the interview finally answered several lingering questions. “Finished watching #last word… such an epic way to address to fans that they’re as strong as ever,” Paramore fan Tiinytots tweeted . Rafazam tweeted to @mtvnews, “Thank u so much for that show, it [shows] how much we mean to Paramore.” ChannieMitch wrote , “They did good. proves why i love them and strengthened my faith in them as a band.” While the presentation definitely rallied and inspired many fans, it also gave Paramore followers greater insight into how the band has been handling the drama. As FantasyFenix wrote , “Its so heart breaking watching the @mtvnews interview with @paramore and it looks like @yelyahwilliams is almost crying.” StfuStephh said , “I absolutely LOVE Zac and Josh, but it seems as if they’re trying to make Hayley out to be a horrible person.” For some, the interview — which touched on everything from the Farros’ allegations that the band is a soulless “manufactured” production doctored by industry bigwigs to rumors the group is splitting up for good — left no stone unturned. “Thanks for the interview ‘Paramore: The Last Word,’ ” Vickyy b tweeted . “That guy asked them everything I wanna know,” referring to MTV News resident rock expert James Montgomery. Is Justin Bieber Jewish?

Is Justin Bieber Jewish? Is Natalie Portman’s fiancee, Benjamin Millipied, Jewish? Based on my Web research, neither one is Jewish. However, there are many people wondering these questions and doing what curious people do in the Digital Age — turning to Google. There are two components to blogging I enjoy most. First, I love writing. Second, I love looking at the analytics to see through which portals visitors have arrived at my blog. Looking at the referral statistics, there is an overwhelming number of Web surfers who are referred to my blog after inquiring about a celebrity’s faith; specifically, whether they are Jewish. While Jewish people may only account for less than 2 percent of the U.S. population, we have provided society with a vastly disproportionate number of celebrities — from actors and musicians to authors, producers and directors. No, Jews don’t own Hollywood in the antisemitic canard conspiracy theory way, but there are certainly a lot of “Members of the Tribe” in Hollywood. When celebrities do the things that only Jewish people have traditionally done, everyone wants to know if they are Jewish or just playing the part. For instance, Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) has been embraced by Madonna, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, and Brittany Spears, but none of them were born Jewish or have converted to the faith. Robin Williams does a great Yiddish accent on stage while telling Jewish jokes, but he’s an Episcopalian. The former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson has announced plans to open a kosher restaurant, but converted to Islam. The French dance choreographer Benjamin Millipied will marry the Israeli Natalie Portman, with Israeli roots, but he doesn’t appear to be of the Jewish faith. And though the teen pop sensation Justin Bieber is not Jewish, he has a ritual of saying the most important statement to the Jewish people before each of his concerts. It turns out that his agent, Scott “Scooter” Braun, taught Bieber the “Shema Yisrael” and now the 16-year-old says those Hebrew words (in addition to a Christian prayer) before taking the stage. It’s human nature to try and know as much as we can about our celebrities. So, it should come as no surprise that fans are curious as to whether Bieber’s Jewish or if Natalie Portman is marrying within the Jewish faith. After all, a person’s faith can be a private matter and as the National Enquirer has always said when it comes to celebrities, “Inquiring minds want to know.” (c) Rabbi Jason A. Keyshia Cole Eyeing Tour With Nicki Minaj

‘I would love to go out with Nicki,’ singer says on Ustream. By Mawuse Ziegbe Keyshia Cole Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images As she preps for a tour to support her latest release, Calling All Hearts, Keyshia Cole is calling up some of her soulful friends to possibly hit the road with her next year. The “Long Way Down” songstress took to Ustream on Tuesday, when her album dropped, to chop it up with fans, and mentioned she plans to head out on a trek in the spring but hasn’t yet decided on an R&B-heavy tour roster or a hip-hop/soul outing alongside Young Money diva Nicki Minaj . “[I’ll go on tour] in March. We’ll probably start promoting sometime in January, probably the end of January. We’re trying to figure out who I’m gonna go on the road with. I had a conversation with Monica about a week ago about it and I told her I would love for her to come, and Faith [Evans] and Melanie Fiona and also Tank — just to add some kind of other flavor in there. But if not, if we don’t do that tour, then it will probably be me and Nicki Minaj,” she said. “I mean, I would love to go out with Nicki, so we’ll see which one happens.” The songstress also opened about her relationship with her “I Ain’t Thru” collaborator, Minaj , explaining that the two can relate due to their hardscrabble backgrounds. Cole, who is four albums into her career, said she often doles out props to Minaj as the lyricist continues her ascent to superstardom. “We’re cool, we’re buddies,” she said. “I see things on TV and I just call her to say congratulations, and stuff like that. I’ll send her an email. I think she’s great. I got love for Nicki. To be honest, she’s a young girl that comes up the same kind of way I came up. We can relate in so many different ways, I’m very proud of her. Who do you want to see Keyshia Cole hit the road with? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Keyshia Cole Nicki Minaj
