Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood Talk ‘Inspiring’ Nashville Rising Benefit Concert

‘I’m just really happy to be a part of it,’ Swift said of performing at Nashville benefit show. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift performs at the Nashville Rising Benefit Concert on Tuesday Photo: Ed Rode/ Nashville Rising/ Getty Images On Tuesday night, Taylor Swift joined forces with Miley Cyrus, Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and even Sandra Bullock for the charity show Nashville Rising: A Benefit Concert for Flood Recovery , at the Bridgestone Arena. The artists teamed up in an effort to raise money to help the Nashville area, which was devastated by floods earlier this spring. Taylor Swift explained that as soon as she heard there was a chance for her to help out , she jumped at it. “Thankfully the people that are close to me that lost their houses have found different places to live and I’ve really seen them help each other,” she said. “It’s been really inspiring. As soon as I even heard that they’re putting something together, I just volunteered and I said I want to do this and I want to help out. It’s really wonderful that Tim and Faith stepped to action so quickly. I’m just really happy to be a part of it.” Carrie Underwood said she was happy to help the city that has shown her music career so much support was heart-warming. “You hear everything from people losing possessions to entire houses being gone. I’ve heard of people living in tents in their backyard,” she said. “You just hear the worst of the worst and hope that in some way there’s something you can do about it. It is for a good cause so I feel like everyone has a happy giving. You look out there and everybody’s at their best.” Billy Ray Cyrus, with his superstar daughter Miley by his side, may have summed it up best. “You know it’s always great to come home. I’m sorry it’s under these circumstances, [but] to feel the energy from the crowd, the band — everybody’s coming together with a common cause,” he said of the evening. “It seemed to be quite a homecoming and for a good reason. I think that Nashville is going to survive this with their heads held high.” See the Nashville Rising website to learn more about what you can do to help with flood relief. Why Did Megan Fox And Brian Austin Green Call Off First Engagement?

Now that they’re engaged again, MTV News takes a look at their relationship. By Jocelyn Vena Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green Photo: Getty Images On Wednesday (June 16), Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green confirmed they were giving engagement another try, after calling off their first betrothal in February 2009. Sources told People magazine at the time that, despite the split, the two remained friendly. “The decision was mutual,” the source said about the couple, who met in 2004 before getting engaged for the first time in November 2006. “They’re still friends.” In 2008, Green spoke about the strain their busy careers put on their relationship, even before the split. “We met on ‘Hope & Faith,’ ” he told TV Guide. “We’ve lived together for three years. We have tattoos of each other’s names. We have more time away from each other now than we’d like. We have a potbellied pig, dogs, two cats, two birds, a squirrel. Megan wants a leopard. That’ll never happen! That’s a whole different world. … I would love more kids. Right now, our biggest problem is rescuing pets from pet stores.” Soon after the pair announced their split, they were spotted around town together. A source told E! News that, shortly after the breakup, “They just seemed like a normal couple. They weren’t holding hands or anything. … She was just sort of following him around.” The pair officially decided to start dating again later in 2009, with Fox revealing what she liked about Green : “He’s a man. He has an ego. He went through [fame] already, and he doesn’t want it back — it was horrible. So he has sympathy. He’s the one person that I know that if I’m struggling and everything’s getting crazy, I can call.” What do you think about Megan and Brian planning to get married? Let us know in the comments! More Liberal Media Figures Say ‘Bravo to Them’ For 40-Year ‘Success’ As Al and Tipper Gore Separate

There were more examples this week of liberal Gore-friendly media outlets trying to smooth over Al and Tipper Gore’s separation. In their “Conventional Wisdom” box Newsweek gave the Gores a sideways arrow: “Famous public smoochers calling it quits after 40 years. Still, they stayed classy.” Time ran a big picture of the 2000 smooch, and underneath Belinda Luscombe wrote “In a leaked e-mail to friends, Al and wife Tipper — whose lascivious smooch on the 2000 campaign trail is etched in the public memory like an awkward childhood experience — announced they ‘have decided to separate’ after 40 years of wedlock, a duration so robust that most statisticians will still count the Gores’ marriage as a success.” On Monday’s edition of the NPR talk show Tell Me More  with Michel Martin, former Washington Post health editor Abigail Trafford also broke out the “Bravo to them” line about the 40 years:   MICHEL MARTIN: Are you as surprised, as so many of the rest of us are, by this news about Al and Tipper Gore? TRAFFORD: Oh, well, you know, of course. We’re all surprised. We’re always shocked when people – we have a certain image of them and they split up. But you know, you never know what goes on inside a marriage. And I think we should sort of turn this around. You know, 40 years is a great accomplishment. It’s not as though you can take away those 40 years. I say bravo to them. And this is one of the differences between divorce that occurs late in life and early divorces. In late divorces, you can’t erase the past. That’s still a glorious past. MARTIN: You’re saying that the 40 years together is still a victory and an accomplishment of which they should be proud, even if the marriage didn’t go the distance. TRAFFORD: Exactly right. Absolutely. Sally Quinn, the first to blame George W. Bush for the breakup, took the rejoicing to an extreme last Sunday from ther perch at the Washington Post On Faith page in an article titled “The Gift of the Gores.”  Rejoice. Al and Tipper have split up. I know, I know. Separation and divorce are supposed to be bad. Marriage is a sacrament to many, a promise and a moral commitment to God and each other. Certainly everyone I talked to was shocked that the Gores were letting go of that commitment. “How sad” was their initial reaction. But there’s another way to look at it. The Gores have handled their decision to separate with dignity and grace. In doing so, they have given us all a great gift — an opportunity for a deeply important and mature conversation about the changing nature of marriage in a time when women have equal opportunities, when people are getting married later in life and when life expectancy is much longer. Not only should we respect their decision, but in some ways we should rejoice in it. Quinn repeated the Bush line: Her role as wife of the Congressman, the Senator, the Vice President and the presidential candidate was all-consuming. Then, just as she was about to become First Lady, a role that would give her the clout to make a difference, the Supreme Court handed the presidency to George W. Bush. Al won the election but lost the presidency, a devastating turn of events that sent him into a deep depression. Imagine what that must have been like for Tipper. Her entire life had been tied to his career. Suddenly, it was all gone. “Poor Al,” everyone thought. “Is Al OK? How’s Al taking it?” What about Tipper? Not only did she lose her career, but she lost her husband, too, at least emotionally. After he came out of his depression, Al’s new career as Nobel Prize-winning environmental activist kept him traveling the globe. His new interests were not hers. Tipper had been the good wife for 40 years. Now it is time for her. Quinn insisted the Gores made the right decision to marry, and also the right decision to separate, and even though she was writing for the “On Faith” page, she made no reference to that old notion that what God has joined, let no man separate .

Liberals Mock ‘Hatchet-Faced’ Helen Thomas

Liberals are forgiving of Helen Thomas’s “get the Hell out of Palestine” remarks to the Jews — even the Jews. But they’re still making fun of the lady’s face. On Tuesday, Norman Lear sent in a two-paragraph statement to the Washington Post’s On Faith page that announced: What we all intend, at least what our cultures and religions say we all intend, is good. Among them is forgiveness. As journalist Helen Thomas leaves the national stage after her 50-year run, it’s time to forgive that now ancient hatched-faced [sic] whippersnapper , whose just being there delighted us for so many years. I will never forgive her offensive last words per se, but rest well, Ms. Thomas, on the billions of other words and on the 90 years it took to say them, Mocking Thomas as “ancient” is odd coming from Lear — he’s 87. On her radio show on Tuesday, Randi Rhodes was discussing the adultery allegations against South Carolina GOP gubernatorial nominee Nikki Haley, but ended by mocking Thomas: [S]she is the darling of the tea party. She got Sarah Palin’s endorsement. Um, and people keep popping up saying they’ve had extramarital affairs with her!  And the people who have said that, you know, they’ve had affairs with her run the gamut. You’ve got a blogger, a prominent — prominent — a political blogger; and a lobbyist, both claiming to have had affairs with Nikki Haley, I mean — the fact that she’s attractive makes their claims a little less suspicious. But something tells me that if this woman looked like Helen Thomas, these guys would not be stepping forward to say they had sex with her!  On his radio show on Tuesday, liberal Bill Press was complaining that Thomas was forced out for having an unpopular opinion, and insisted it was a terrible idea to distinguish news media from opinion journalism in the briefing room: I don’t think we want to invite any White House, any administration, to decide where people sit in the press briefing room or who gets in the door based on whether or not they have an opinion, and they express an opinion, even an opinion that we disagree with. And even an opinion that is pretty inflammatory. If you start that, that is a real, real slippery slope. It is a slippery slope, since the “objective” media often decide to avoid the entire concept of objectivity. But the correspondents association is talking about a brighter line than that, where Thomas and folks like Les Kinsolving (who’s a talk-show host, not a reporter) would be moved back in the pecking order. If a press conference is about advancing the news, and not just your personal opinions, then it shouldn’t be that controversial for the “news” people should get first dibs on the questions. Press added later: “I don’t care who the president is, the White House press corps should not be a bunch of pussycats.” As if he really minds the media going soft in the current era.

Lady Gaga Fans Call ‘Alejandro’ Video ‘Brilliant,’ ‘Scary’

‘Words can’t describe how awesome and revolutionary this video is!!’ one fan gushed. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lady Gaga in “Alejandro” Photo: Interscope Records Lady Gaga’s latest video opus, “Alejandro,” is a dizzying array of provocative imagery, roping in everything from Weimar Germany to S&M to (of course) Madonna. And as expected, Gaga’s dedicated army of “little monsters” hit the web to take it all in. While the clip’s moody, brooding visuals are a departure from the gleefully demented camp of hits like “Telephone” or the futuristic disco of “Bad Romance,” Gaga’s fans are largely into “Alejandro” ‘s sleek, retro vibe . The clip “had my blood boiling the whole time,” reader Andrew commented, adding that the video, whose sullen imagery nods to German films of the ’20s and ’30s, is “cinematic genius, pure brilliance.” “The video is effin’ brilliant!!” reader Journey wrote, echoing fellow Gaga fan Andrew. “Gaga does it yet again — it’s sleek, sexy and a bit scary. I knew she would slay.” With her machine-gun bra, simulated orgies and Catholic iconography, Gaga goes for shock value in “Alejandro.” Ralfy posted, “WHAT???? She makes SUCH a big statement with this video! Criticizing religion, homophobia, political repression, sexism!!! Words can’t describe how awesome and revolutionary this video is!!” “Oh my gosh lady gaga wears a pair of pants for the first time,” Faith observed, pointing out that the conservative wardrobe choices might prove shocking to fans accustomed to Gaga’s high drama. “As crazy as she is i loveeeee lady gaga!” she added. Still, with all of the sinister, shadowy imagery, some fans were left in the dark. “I don’t think the video was boring, ’cause I was like omg what is she going to do next in this video, BUT IT WAS A LITLE TOO CREEPY FOR ME! O.K. ALOTTTT!” ashcuptink13 commented. And although the 80s pop-culture references are numerous and hard to miss, Jennifer defended Gaga’s penchant for paying homage. “You can say she is copying Ace of Base, Madonna, [Michael] Jackson, etc., but in my opinion she is referencing them in her own unique works of art, a wonderfully grounded and respectful gesture to those who paved the way before her.” With “Alejandro” Gaga gave her fans the unexpected, which is exactly what her little monsters crave. As Samuel posted, “U do ur thang gurl GAGA> > LIVE ON MOTHER MONSTER.” What did you think of Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” video? Let us know in the comments! Biggie Would Have Spent 38th Birthday ‘With The Family,’ Lil’ Cease Says

Junior M.A.F.I.A. member recalls some of B.I.G.’s past birthdays. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes and Sway Calloway Notorious B.I.G. Photo: Getty Images The Big man with the even bigger heart. Friday (May 21) would have been Notorious B.I.G.’s 38th birthday. Lil’ Cease sat back and thought about fond memories of his late friend, especially birthday memories. There was a time when Cease lost a birthday present that Faith Evans had bought her husband. “I lost a ring she bought Big,” Cease said with a big grin. “It was about $15,000.” Cease would sometimes wear Biggie’s jewelry onstage while they were performing. During a section in the show where they performed “Gimme the Loot,” Cease would throw wads of cash into the crowd. During one show in Texas, Cease was wearing Big’s gift and threw the ring in the crowd along with the money. The youngest member of the Junior M.A.F.I.A. didn’t realize until they were backstage after the show. “He’s like, ‘A’ight, where that ring at, playboy?’ ” Cease thought back. “I’m looking on my finger, in my pockets. … He was like, ‘That ring is gone.’ ” Cease said Big wasn’t angry, he just told him he had to deal with Faith. Cease also laughed when he looked at a picture of Biggie blowing out birthday candles with Puff Daddy at a party, circa 1995. “That’s Puff Daddy. I can’t remember his name, but the guy in the middle, that’s Stevie J’s brother,” the Brooklyn native said, looking at the photo that was shot by Ronnie Wright. “We was in the park during a Total video shoot. We was just sitting there, 3 o’clock in the afternoon, drinking Cristal on the grass in Long Island, having fun. Fly. That was just the start of the day.” Laughter ensued when Cease thought about when Biggie turned 21. “At that time, we was still getting on with the record deal. It wasn’t that much of a celebration. Just more some family and friends sitting around having a good time. Real basic stuff. A little party. Riding around listening to music. We knew what was about to happen. Puff was working with him. Diddy threw a nice gathering for us. It was just the basics. Big had that Land Cruiser. We would drive around, get that smoke for the first part of the day. Then we was in the lab, in Daddy’s House [Diddy’s studio]. Daddy’s House had just got up and running.” When asked how Big would be celebrating today, Cease said more of the same. “Today, he’d probably just be with the family,” Cease said. “We had our experience on the road: performing, doing shows, big parties. He definitely would have had a big party. A celebrity affair. But he also would have done something private with the M.A.F.I.A., close friends, wife. He kept it together with everybody he dealt with, and I’m sure they would have all came out and shown their love for Big and kept everything else under the carpet, whatever it was. Big had that type of heart, that everyone would wanna come out and show their love and spend that day with him.” How do you think Biggie would have celebrated his 38th birthday? Let us know in the comments.

New Kate Gosselin Book Tanks Hard

Kate Gosselin’s latest book isn’t exactly flying off the shelves, which is a good thing too, because if it were, the apocalypse might be imminent. Since its April 13 release, I Just Want You to Know: Letters to My Kids on Love, Faith, and Family has sold 10,084 copies, according to reports. That’s 10,084 more than we’d hope, but still a low total. Gosselin’s new non-fiction title debuted at #11 on the New York Times ‘ non fiction bestseller list, and at #103 on USA Today’s bestsellers chart. By Thursday afternoon, its Amazon rank was #862. This is in spite of Kate Gosselin relentlessly hawking the book (while being absent from the kids, ironically), and being on Dancing with the Stars. Has the book-buying public tired of Kate? Jim Milliot, business and news director of Publishers Weekly , recently stated that the numbers “nowhere near a blockbuster” and ” not that impressive .” Not that surprising, either. A Kate Gosselin book about parenting? After all this? Would you buy a Lindsay Lohan book on teetotalling? Just curious. By contrast, the 35-year-old mom’s first two books, Multiple Blessings and Eight Little Faces, both climbed to number five on the New York Times ‘ list. Multiple Blessings sold 523,000 copies in 2009. I Just Want You to Know “continues [Kate’s] story of faith and family. Using excerpts and written prayers from her journal, Kate offers an intimate look at the heart of a mother during the years her family transitioned from obscurity to fame.” In related news, Jon Gosselin is reportedly penning a memoir, I Just Want to Hit That: A Divorced Father of Eight’s Quest For Mediocre Rebound Girls .
