Football World Cup 2010: All Whites at finals

The All Whites booked their place in next year’s football World Cup finals – and New Zealand sporting history – with a dramatic 1-0 win over Bahrain in Wellington last night. A passionate, sellout 35500 crowd at the Cake Tin saw Rory Fallon’s header and Mark Paston’s penalty save give Ricki Herbert’s team a spot at the world’s biggest sporting event for only the second time – and the first since 1982. The final whistle sparked scenes of incredible celebration as the capital got ready to party. Police and stewards had to hold back jubilant fans as the All Whites embarked on a lap of honour. Herbert, who played in the 1982 team, said his team had “given it everything, four years of total commitment”. “We did a little bit of homework and really pulled it out of the top drawer,” he said. ‘ “We thought we’d go through without conceding a goal, we thought one would do it. It’s just so emotional.” Fallon, whose father Kevin was an assistant coach during the 1982 campaign, gave a succinct summary of his all-important goal: “Them ones I don’t miss.” Paston said facing the penalty that would have ended All White hopes was “a bit surreal”. “I basically guessed which way and it ended up in my hands – it was great.” Team captain Ryan Nelsen, who plays for Blackburn Rovers in the English Premier League, paid tribute to the Wellington supporters. “I’ve played in some incredible atmospheres in my time but this is right up there. It’s been brilliant.” Prime Minister John Key was quick to …

Is This the Best (or Worst) Late Night TV Moment of 2010?

A few weeks ago prior to a taping of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon , Roots leader and NWA enthusiast Questlove enlisted guest Ice Cube to revive the rap pioneers’ “Straight Outta Compton.” The video of the performance only made it online late Tuesday, depicting a sanitized, Rock Center-friendly rendition of a song whose original endures as one of the most searing tracks of the ’80s. I can’t lie: It raises goose bumps — and at least a few questions.

Jimmy Fallon Recalls How a Forgotten Will Ferrell Character Influenced his Late Night Performance Art

Jimmy Fallon threw one helluva party last night. You should have been there. And by there , I mean on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon ‘s blog, where the host and his writers threw a virtual viewing party of his show. But instead of just providing commentary of Jake Gyllenhaal doing karate , Jimmy performed an acoustic version of the Bee Gees’ “You Don’t Love Somebody,” fantasized about owning a chain of specialty spinach-dip restaurants and cold-called a fan on speakerphone. Oh, and then he told one behind-the-scenes Saturday Night Live anecdote that has never been heard — at least via NBC’ s live-stream — before.

Jimmy Fallon Makes His Late Night Hosting Debut With Justin Timberlake

It must have been a nerve wrecking day last night for Jimmy Fallon as he made his late night talk show host debut. The good news is that he had awesome guests for his first night. Justin Timberlake and Robert De Niro stopped by the show which must have made things a bit easier for Fallon. It seems like Fallon got some good reviews but naturally there was some bad ones as well. A Hollywood Reporter critic said, “He tried too hard, stumbled over his punchlines and struggled to make Robert De Niro seem interesting,” who basically said that Fallon had a “typically stiff debut.” Then comes the Entertainment Weekly critic who said that, “He did an ultra-ordinary monologue — one liners about President Obama and the deficit that sounded like material Jay Leno’s writers had faxed over from L.A.” “He still looked nervous…His eyes locked onto the cue cards more frequently than at us.” Ofcourse he was a nervous, it was his first day as a late night talk show host! Let’s give the guy the break he needs because chances are he will open up and his show will be great. Did you guys watch his debut? You be our critic, what did you think?
