Conan O’Brien’s Fans Weigh In On TBS Move

‘I’ll watch him anywhere,’ one loyal Coco fan tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Rya Backer Conan O’Brien Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images In just under a year, Conan O’Brien has gone from the host of late-night TV’s most venerated institution to a guy attempting to launch a new show on a basic-cable channel that only recently got into the late-night game. It’s quite a turnaround for the floppy-haired comedian, and it remains to be seen if his move to TBS leads to a resurgence or irrelevance. Only time … and ratings … and talent bookings … and continued pop-culture relevance … and any number of other factors will tell. For now, all we can do is follow Conan’s live theatrical comedy tour , read his tweets and wonder what might be. Joining MTV News in such speculation are some of Conan’s fans, who were roaming Times Square after the TBS news broke and who shared their thoughts on the move with us. “I don’t really know what a TBS is,” deadpanned Kenna Udemba, neatly encapsulating Team Coco’s biggest problem as they try to attract eyeballs for the November launch of the new show. “I never really heard of it. I don’t think I’ll be watching it.” Others, however, have vowed to seek out O’Brien wherever and whenever he pops up on the boob tube. “I will totally watch Conan on TBS,” Jierra Clark declared. “I’ll watch him anywhere. He was always my favorite. I think he’s hilarious, and I miss him.” Adam Francique seconded that all-for-Coco-and-Coco-for-all sentiment. “I think he had a specific audience, not just the NBC audience,” he said. “I think his crew is going to go straight from NBC to TBS.” And once there, viewers will find a channel that’s strived to brand itself as a destination for comedy, from its syndicated offerings like “Family Guy” and “The Office” to the original show “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” to its burgeoning late-night lineup of Conan at 11 p.m. and “Lopez Tonight” at midnight. “I think it’s a good double-header,” Jessica Dub

The Family Guy vs. Sarah Palin Saga: Offensively Predictable, Entirely Played Out

The definitive article on the battle that erupted between Family Guy and Sarah Palin has been written: it’s an A1 NYT feature , it’s comprehensive, and with any luck, finally puts this stupid, boring, predictable saga out of sight forever. In the event that you can’t understand why a cartoon on Fox would be embroiled in a highly quotable media brouhaha with a former vice-presidential candidate, all you have to know is that it’s Family Guy and Sarah Palin. But if you need more background, basically: Family Guy airs episode starring character with Down’s Syndrome voiced by actress with Down’s Syndrome. Vague allusion/”joke” is made about Sarah Palin as character with Down’s Syndrome notes that her mother used to be the governor of Alaska, har har. Palin, who has child with Down’s Syndrome, gets angry, gets on Facebook, and writes about how hurt she is, as former Vice-Presidential candidates are wont to do. So! In comes New York Times ArtsBeat writer Dave Itzkoff, recapping the entire thing , with quotes from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, Sarah Palin, Palin’s daughter Bristol, the Family Guy actress in question, and the executive director of the Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles, who helped get said actress cast. Naturally, the actress (Andrea Fay Friedman) was delighted to be a part of all of this. In an email (that the New York Times apparently saved in full for this here definitive roundup) Friedman notes: “I guess former Governor Palin does not have a sense of humor.” She added that in her family, “we think laughing is good,” and that she was raised by her parents “to have a sense of humor and to live a normal life.” Ms. Friedman continued, “My mother did not carry me around under her arm like a loaf of French bread the way former Governor Palin carries her son Trig around looking for sympathy and votes.” Well, basically, yes. Even more astute is the observation from said advocate: Gail Williamson, executive director of the Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles, which, among other services, assists films and television series in casting actors with the disability, and helped Ms. Friedman get hired by “Family Guy,” said it did not matter whether she thought the episode was funny. “Within ‘Family Guy,’ the character was fully included, well-rounded, dynamic, not dealing with stereotypical Down syndrome issues,” Ms. Williamson said. She added: “Am I a fan of that kind of humor? Eh. It’s beside the point.” Also correct! The ends here aren’t necessarily bad. Someone got an acting gig, and someone pushed a unarguably “good” cause (equality) forward. There are worse results, and naturally, Friedman and Williamson are happy. Palin and MacFarlane, however, come out of this looking worse for the wear. Just for a moment, let’s consider Seth MacFarlane telling the New York Times that he was proud of what he did, noting that the character’s Down Syndrome being played as a secondary element was essentially the point. Seth MacFarlane’s in the TV business, and he didn’t do this to advocate a cause. There’s an inherent shock factor in having a character with Down’s Syndrome make a joke about Sarah Palin, who has a kid with Down’s Syndrome. He took an audience by the eyeballs, and exploited a willing actress with Down’s Syndrome to do it. And equality, indeed: What working, career actresses trying to make a living—Down’s Syndrome or not—can you think of that would turn down a gig as high profile as Family Guy ? None of ’em, and this one, like the rest, was more than willing to cash a paycheck. Can’t blame her. On the other side, Sarah Palin has again and again fed into being baited by irreverent people making irreverent jokes at her family’s expense. If you have a very large platform, and you say something that can even remotely be perceived as mildly controversial by Palin, it’s pretty much a given that she’s going to mic up and talk about this, as opposed to just writing guys like David Letterman and Seth MacFarlane off (just like the rest of the people they take on manage to do). She used the moment to step up on a platform and advocate a separate side of the same cause, but moreover, herself as a voice in “the conversation” about “the controversy.” Like clockwork: 1. Seth MacFarlane makes “controversial” episode of thing meant to entertain with Sarah Palin joke. 2. Sarah Palin joke elicits Sarah Palin reaction on internet and TV. 3. Sarah Palin reaction elicits Seth MacFarlane reaction. 4. Separate reactions of Sarah Palin and Seth McFarlane are yielded by “controversy,” producing more “controversy.” 5. More “controversy” yields NYT story. 6. Family Guy gets press, Sarah Palin gets soapbox, Fox gets viewers for Palin’s argument on Fox News and for Family Guy ‘s ratings, worthy cause gets talked about more. Everybody “wins.” But mostly Dave Itzkoff , because he got more money than I did to write about this. Kind of related: if Robot Chicken made this joke, it’d (A) be funnier and (B) wouldn’t be a story.

50 TV Theme Songs I’ll Never Forget

TV shows come and go (well, maybe with the exception of COPS and The Simpsons), but television theme songs will always stay with us, be it nostalgic or just plain annoying. On more than one occasion, I’ve caught myself humming most of the TV show theme songs listed below, the way I hum popular movie themes . 1. Six Feet Under theme music This one’s my all-time favorite TV theme. Brilliant theme music for a brilliant TV show. 2. Jeopardy theme I’ve lost count of the number of times some douchebag in college hummed the Jeopardy theme music whenever I took some time answering a professor’s question. 3. Pokemon theme I hated it, my kids love it. They win. 4. Remington Steele theme This is the theme to the show that introduced Pierce Brosnan to the world. 5. Transformers theme A classic I used to wake up and look forward to as a child. 6. Doctor Who theme Various arrangements of this British TV theme music have come out in the past four decades, all of them just as haunting and ethereal as the original. 7. Benny Hill theme Not really a fan of the show, but its theme music just gets me every time. 8. Mission Impossible theme One of the most recognizable TV themes of all time. 9. Friends theme song For ten seasons, Chandler, Joey, Ross, Rachel, Monica and Phoebe were there for us. 10. Batman theme song The various Batman animated series had cool themes, but nothing beats the “”Dadadadadadadadadadadadada…Batman!” of the 1960s Adam West series. 11. Simpsons theme It’s just unbelievable that we’ve been listening to this TV theme song for almost 18 years now. 12. Pink Panther theme Even though Steve Martin and Beyonce’s movie sucked, the theme remains unforgettable. 13. The Office theme Save for the grungy guitars, this theme reminds me of a number of 80s television theme songs. 14. Cops theme song “Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do…?” 15. Family Guy theme It’s just fascinating how a theme song to a very funny animated show that respects nothing and no one could be so preachy. 16. Futurama theme I liked The Simpsons theme better, but this theme sounded fun just the same. 17. Miami Vice theme Another classic from the 80s. 18. South Park theme No other TV show can put lyrics like “I like girls with big fat titties, I like girls with big vaginas” in its theme song and get away with it. 19. Barney theme song This is the TV theme song that makes me want to become a purple dinosaur murderer. 20. Jackass theme song I just love how the Jackass punks chose a song with a polka beat as its TV theme song. 21. All WWE theme songs I like most WWE theme songs, but I love Batista’s “I Walk Alone” song the best. And the fact that he is my favorite wrestler there has everything to do with it. 22. The X-Files theme This is one TV theme that was perfect for the series: creepy, ethereal and just plain awesome. 23. American Idol theme One of the most recognizable television theme songs today. 24. Law and Order theme One word: Sexy 25. CSI theme The song that introduced a whole new generation to The Who. 26. Smallville theme “Somebody saaaaaaaaaave meeeeeee…..” I’ve been listening to this song for seven seasons and it hasn’t gotten any less annoying. 27. Party Boy theme song I couldn’t get Images of Chris Pontius’ bouncing butt out of my head every time I hear this song. 28. Firefly theme Too bad they’ve canceled this one just when it was starting to pick up. 29. Spongebob Squarepants theme This TV theme song never fails to wake my little kid up in the morning. 30. Hawaii Five-O theme One of the most dynamic and recognizable TV show theme songs ever. 31. The Sopranos theme song I really am going to miss humming “got yourself a gun….” 32. Scooby-Doo theme I loved this song as a kid, and nothing can ever change that. 33. The A-Team theme As testosterone-laden as any TV theme music could ever get. 34. Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers theme For a show that sucked, it sure had one kickass theme song, if only for the nifty guitar licks. 35. Theme from Shaft Isaac Hayes, way before he got caught up in all that Scientology vs. South Park crap. 36. Survivor theme The show is in its 15th season, and I still couldn’t hum the notes of the opening theme right. 37. Kim Possible theme song Countless little girls around the world have picked up hairbrushes and sang along to this hip RnB television theme song. 38. Prison Break theme That ethereal female voice chanting at the beginning of this TV theme never fails to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. 39. 24 theme Its opening countdown sequence makes it absolutely one of the most distinct TV themes ever. 40. Knight Rider theme I almost fell off my seat when I heard one Bollywood-type dance song sample the unmistakable bass line of this TV theme. 41. Scrubs theme A funny show about life working in a hospital, minus the drama of your typical medical drama show, makes Scrubs a gem in itself, and the theme captures the light nature of the show perfectly. 42. Dallas theme My big sister watched this show regularly, and the theme just kinda stuck. 43. Sesame Street theme The theme song of my childhood. 44. Charmed theme Just thinking of this TV theme song makes me miss Alyssa Milano on TV even more. 45. Happy Days theme song Just caught some episodes of this show on reruns, but I found the harmony of the opening theme to be pretty cool. 46. Cheers theme song My parents watched this show, and I could still remember the theme. 47. Sex and The City theme Hopefully, this perky ditty makes it to the upcoming movie as well. 48. Wonder Woman theme Who could ever forget Lynda Carter jumping high, running fast and deflecting bullets in that sexy primary colored-costume, with a chorus of women singing “Wonder Womaaaaaaan!!!” in the background? 49. MacGyver theme Somehow, I find myself humming this television theme song every time I’m fixing something in the garage. 50. Spiderman theme song That Chinese woman’s version of this TV theme song in “Spiderman 2” really cracked me up. Phew… wow that was fun. I think next, I feel a solid list of prom themes coming up based off some uber funny (bad!) prom pictures I’ve just seen! Keep an eye out!
