Is Justin Bieber The Next Justin Timberlake? Experts Weigh In

We examine the teen idol’s career prospects following My World 2.0. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: Larry Marano/ Getty Images Justin Bieber is only 16 years old and has just an EP and one full-length ( My World 2.0, which, if you’re reading this, you’ve probably already purchased) in his discography, but it’s never too early to start asking: What’s next? More specifically, where does Bieber go from here? Barring some colossal event — meteorite, sandstorm, etc. — My World 2.0 will debut at #1 on next week’s Billboard albums chart, with some speculating that it could sell upward of 500,000 copies in its first week of release. Next month, he’ll perform on “Saturday Night Live,” and in June, he’ll launch an arena tour. But what happens after that? How will Bieber’s career pan out? It’s insanely early to posit questions such as these, but when an artist manages to capture the pop-music zeitgeist in the way Biebs has (and do it at such a young age), sometimes you’ve just got to ask. So we reached out to some experts to see just how high Bieber can go. Turns out, they tend to think the answer is already right before our eyes, in the careers of some of today’s pop luminaries. “He is signed with Usher, and he’s the same age as Usher was when he first became a star. Justin Timberlake too. So they’re the model for him,” Entertainment Weekly music critic Leah Greenblatt said. “Like both of them, he keeps it sort of clean, so moms can feel good about playing his music too. I can see him playing a bunch of instruments, so perhaps, like Justin, he moves into making more organic music, and each of his albums get progressively more interesting.” “It depends on how much he continues to put himself out there. The model is a Lady Gaga or a Ke$ha, for better or worse,” music critic Maura Johnston added. “Gaga is always reaching out to her fans, and Bieber is very savvy about that. But the question is: What happens after his fans see him live? Where else is there to go as far as experiencing him as a fan?’ So he has to keep that momentum going. “And that’s why I say Ke$ha, because that’s sort of the downside of this. She’s sort of retreated into herself and believing her own B.S. It’s a turnoff to fans. Whereas with Gaga, she’s super invested in communicating with them,” she continued. “And Bieber is similar. But his hooks are his good looks and the fact that his fans think they can tweet him and get his attention. Teen idols are supposed to be really untouchable. But Bieber really isn’t like that. You might not get a phone call from him, but there’s a chance he might ‘@ reply’ to you on Twitter, and that’s enough.” A lot of what happens to Bieber seems to rely on his willingness to keep building on that momentum, and that bodes favorably. Because by all accounts, he is blessed with a rather prodigious work ethic. Music is what he does for fun. “He seems like an instinctive performer. He loves working,” Greenblatt said. “I know from his label rep that he plays drums and guitar on almost every track on the album, and he can learn a new instrument in like 30 minutes. So he’s sort of a savant, which is something you don’t get from a packaged tween star.” But all the hard work in the world can only take Bieber so far. Because at some point down the road, he’s going to face the great teen-idol equalizer: He is going to grow up, his voice is going to change, and he’s going to have to make the leap from boyhood to (young) manhood. It’s a roadblock many can’t seem to overcome. Will Bieber buck the trend? Only time will tell. “The big question is: What will happen when his voice breaks?” Greenblatt said. “But supposedly, your voice is like a muscle, where if you work on it, it won’t break. So who knows? If he tops out at 5-foot-3, that may be an issue too.” “He definitely has to capitalize on now, on being younger, while at the same time trying to figure out what he’s going to do next,” Johnston added. “That’s tough to do. It’s interesting to watch today’s teen idols attempting to move on. Nick Jonas is trying it now, with middling results. I mean, I like that he has members of the New Power Generation in his band, but I don’t think kids understand it.” Then again, all the postulating in the world only matters so much. Ultimately, it will be Bieber’s fans who have the final say about his career, and, well, they don’t show any sign of deserting him anytime soon. “How can you not [love him]?” fan Brooke Bonstead told MTV News. “He’s just amazing. I mean, come on, everyone has Bieber fever. He’s a teenage boy. All teenage girls like him, and he can relate to all teenage people.” “[I like him] a lot, like an infinite amount,” another Bieber fan, Rachel Bower, added. “I just think he’s really talented and he’s really mature for his age. He’s not an ordinary teenybopper performer.” What do you think is next for Justin? Do you think he’ll have a long career? Let us know in the comments! Justin Bieber Performs On ‘The View,’ Tells The Ladies He’s Single

For his second day on the show, Bieber performs ‘Baby.’ By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber appears on “The View” on Monday Photo: ABC Justin Bieber had some of his biggest fans dancing in the aisles at Tuesday’s taping of “The View,” where he made history by being the first guest to make two appearances on the show two days in a row. On Monday he sat down with the ladies to chat about his rise to fame and perform an acoustic version of his track “Never Let You Go,” and on Tuesday he came back for a full-out performance of his single “Baby” off his sophomore release My World 2.0. His performance included a full band, DJ, back-up dancers and singers. But before he hit the stage and before the cameras started rolling, Bieber killed time by beat-boxing and joking around with his bandmates. As soon as the cameras started rolling and Elizabeth Hasselbeck gave him his intro, he went into full-on performance mode singing the track, rapping Ludacris’ part and even busting off some Michael Jackson-like dance moves. Bieber even serenaded a few of his fans in the crowd. After his performance was over, he remained onstage where he revealed he was single and wouldn’t mind dating a girl like Hasselbeck. When the show went back to commercial, he was seen hanging out with all the hosts, minus Barbara Walters who wasn’t on the show, and posing for pictures with them while fans in the stands tried to get his attention. When the show ended, Bieber gave a few extra high-fives to his band and left the stage, leaving his fans excited and wanting more. ‘American Idol’ Judge Kara DioGuardi Says Her First Season ‘Sucked’

‘It was freshman year. … I’d never been on television,’ DioGuardi told Jay Leno on ‘The Tonight Show.’ By Eric Ditzian Kara DioGuardi Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images On Monday night, the night before “American Idol” debuts its top 12 contestants , Kara DioGuardi stopped by Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show” couch to talk all things season nine. The “Idol” judge dished on her tableside flirtation with Simon Cowell, defended the performance of Ellen DeGeneres and admitted that her nerves got in the way of her commentary last season. ‘American Idol’ Season 8 Memorable Moments “It was freshman year,” DioGuardi explained about her first year behind the judges’ table. “It sucked. I’d never been on television. The 30-second sound bite — I’m Italian, that’s impossible! To shut up is difficult!” This year, she’s finally started to have fun on “Idol.” From a viewer’s perspective, there’s no doubting DioGuardi has become more comfortable on camera and has been able to deliver more insightful criticism . “I think this year, it’s more about the contestants because I’m not feeling as nervous, so I can zero in on them and what they’re feeling and what they’re going through,” she said. “It’s just a different experience and it feels way better.” Leno also made a point of questioning the ongoing coziness between Kara and Simon. The two judges seemed to be snuggling up to each other over the last few weeks — something that even Ryan Seacrest addressed at one point. DioGuardi is a newlywed, while Cowell recently got engaged . So what’s going on between the duo? “I’m trying to figure it out,” DioGuardi said with a laugh. “I don’t know if it’s because he’s got a girlfriend and he’s got separation anxiety and he needs to lean into me.” Before the segment wrapped up, DioGuardi came to the defense of DeGeneres, who has come under criticism for delivering kind words rather than accurate, constructive critiques from behind the judges’ table. Kara maintained that Ellen is “doing a great job.” “It’s scary,” she added. “She’s getting used to that. Sometimes it’s bad news and it ain’t fun to deliver.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. D’Angelo Issues Statement On Arrest

Singer ‘has pled not guilty — and is contesting the allegations made against him,’ statement reads, regarding arrest for soliciting a prostitute. By MTV News staff D’Angelo Photo: MTV A rep for R&B singer D’Angelo (real name: Michael Archer), who was arrested and charged with soliciting a prostitute Saturday in New York, issued a statement about the incident Monday (March 8). “We know there is a lot of speculation in regard to the arrest of D’Angelo in New York City this past weekend,” the statement, from Lindsay Guion of D’Angelo Management, reads. “We would like his fans and the public at large to know that D’Angelo has pled not guilty — and is contesting the allegations made against him. Also know that he is in good health and extremely excited about his forthcoming new album. “D’Angelo would like to personally thank all of his fans for the outpouring of concern, and appreciates if all would allow the American justice system to resolve the matter before jumping to any conclusions,” the statement concludes. While a police spokesperson declined to provide further details on the incident when contacted by MTV News, according to The New York Post, the singer allegedly offered an undercover policewoman $40 for oral sex. D’Angelo was driving alone in his Range Rover at Greenwich and Horatio streets at about 2:30 a.m. when he saw a woman he believed to be a prostitute, unnamed sources told the Post. He was arrested and charged with solicitation after asking the woman for sex, according to the sources, who added that the singer had $12,000 in his car. Powered by his 1995 debut LP, Brown Sugar, D’Angelo was one of the leading lights of R&B during the 1990s, but he has released little music since his 2000 sophomore effort, Voodoo, and has been plagued by legal difficulties in the years since. Ke$ha Slams Britney Spears For Lip-Synching

‘I would never do that to my fans,’ ‘Tik Tok’ singer reportedly says. By Gil Kaufman Ke$ha Photo: Splash News Online Ke$ha recently lashed out at Britney Spears for lip-synching during her concerts. “I think that’s bullsh–,” Ke$ha reportedly told the U.K.’s “I don’t think that’s fair at all for people who are going to see the show. I think if you are going to be a singer, you should sing. If you are going to be a dancer, you should dance.” Ke$ha, who sang background vocals on Britney’s 2008 track “Lace and Leather,” said Spears should be clearer about which parts of her show are live and which are pre-recorded. “If you are going to do a combination of the two, you should make it very clear when you are singing and very clear when you are dancing,” she said. “I would never do that to my fans.” But even though her comments were harsh, Ke$ha said she meant no offense to Spears. “People have asked me before to mime,” she explained. “I have been up at three in the morning for a television show with jet lag, but I refuse to mime … It’s treating people as if they are too stupid to realize you are not actually singing. “Sometimes it is hard to sing and dance at the same time but I would rather be off and be real and genuine about it to my fans. I don’t want to treat my fans like they are stupid.” A representative for Ke$ha had not responded to MTV News’ requests for comment at press time, and a spokesperson for Spears had no comment. “That is my take on my fans and life in general,” said Ke$ha. “My whole record is super-honest. I am really honest. When I am singing I may sound sh—y sometimes, but at least you’ll know I’m singing.” Related Photos MTV.com Exclusive: Ke$ha Related Artists Ke$ha Britney Spears

My Chemical Romance Part Ways With Drummer Bob Bryar

‘This was a painful decision for all of us to make,’ MCR guitarist Frank Iero said in a statement. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance’s Bob Bryer and Gerard Way Photo: Vince Bucci/Getty Images On Wednesday night, My Chemical Romance confirmed what most of their fans had already been buzzing about for weeks now: Drummer Bob Bryar has left the band. In a statement posted on MCR’s official site , guitarist Frank Iero wrote that “as a band, we have been very fortunate over the years that our sweet times have greatly outweighed the sour ones, and a great deal of that is owed to you, the fans. Which is why we wanted this news to come from us and not some bullsh– gossip site. “As of 4 weeks ago, My Chemical Romance and Bob Bryar parted ways,” the statement continued. “This was a painful decision for all of us to make and was not taken lightly. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors and expect you all to do the same.” No reason was given for the split, though according to Notifi Radio and others, Bryar left after “an argument of some sort ensued between [him] and the rest of the band.” Bryar joined My Chem in 2004, replacing original drummer Matt Pelissier, and played on their ambitious The Black Parade album. There’s no word on just who will replace him behind the kit, though it sounds like the band are already moving on: Toro ended the statement by mentioning that the remaining members of MCR were already back at work on their new album (which, to be honest, pretty much everyone thought they’d finished already). “We have been writing some very powerful new songs, so this week the four of us entered the studio once again,” Toro wrote. “And what has been ending up on tape each night is some of the most exciting and honest work we have ever created.” Related Artists My Chemical Romance
