Russia-US pact on adopted kids – 108,000 of Russian children where victims of criminal offences last year

Dozens of Russian children are neglected and abused by foreign adoptive parents every year. Child Rights Ombudsman Ravel Astakhov says the new agreement will mean guarantees of protection for Russian kids. “We will have a very effective legal instrument to control the situation with our adopted children in their new families in the US,” Astakhov said. “When an adopted child goes to the US and becomes a US citizen, this child is continuing to be a Russian citizen until he or she is 18 years old. And we have a right to support that child like a Russian citizen. We have a right to observe the situation with that adopted child in the new family.” Astakhov added that the final document must now be sent to the federal authorities. “And after that we are ready to sign that agreement,” he said. Another important factor in the pact is that decisions by Russian courts will start being recognized in the US. “Under this new agreement it would not be necessary to have another court decision, from a US court,” Astakhov said. He also said that Russia is initiating new law amendments to protect children from crimes committed against them in Russia itself and the Russian parliament is also considering a law to protect children from dangers online. Obama ignores clemency for political prisoners

President Obama fails to free political prisoners in the US The United States of America holds the world record for the most incarcerated population on the planet. Nearly 2.3 million Americans are locked into the country’s criminal justice system.Among them, hundreds of political prisoners the U.S. government does not recognize. “There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people [in the U.S.] whom I would call political prisoners.” So when US President Barack Obama finally decided to execute his pardon privilege, his choices were disappointing to many, like Jim Klimaski, who litigates constitutional and civil rights cases. Klimaski told RT: “President Obama had the opportunity of correcting egregious errors and the people he pardoned are essentially insignificant.” The men and women granted clemency all committed low level offenses such as forgery, drug possession, even mutilating coins. Some of the recipients of the pardons didn't even go to prison. In the stacks of pardon applications were those of prisoners like Native American Activist Leonard Peltier. Peltier, a member of the militant American Indian Movement was sentenced to two life terms in prison for allegedly killing two FBI agents. However, the initial trial was corrupted by faulty affidavits and coerced evidence submitted by the FBI. Some argue Peltier’s only crime was his political activism. Betty Peltier, Leonard’s sister told RT: “They have no evidence at all that he killed anyone.” Mumia Abu Jamal is also considered a political prisoner. He has been on death row for over two decades. Abu Jamal was member of the Black Liberation Movement. He was charged for a crime world dignitaries and members of the European Parliament insist he did not commit. At a demonstration in Washington, DC one Mumia supporter said: “The only reason why he is in jail is because he was framed.” Political hip hop artist Immortal Technique has leant his support and voice to Mumia’s case. He believes these convictions are simply the most known cases of a systematic attempt to silence those seen as a threat to the establishment. “They symbolize a system basically charging someone who is innocent with a crime. Someone specific who is attached to a movement.” Hundreds of other cases fit the description of political prisoners. Such as the Cuban Five, in prison for investigating terrorists attacks against Cuba from Miami and the Puerto Rican Liberation fighters jailed for fighting for Puerto Rico’s independence from the U.S. Those groups, along with countless members of the Black Panther Party, became targets for political reasons some lawyers insist. Zachary Wolfe of the National Lawyers Guild has dealt with many flawed cases. He believes Obama acted with poor judgment. “Pardon Power is absolute, he can do whatever he wants and he has chosen not to,” Wolfe said. He recalls previous pardons that were controversial. “It's hard to see any justice in the process. There are people who have done harm to democracy who have been pardoned such as Oliver North” Oliver North was convicted of selling weapons to the Iranian government during the Iran/Iraq war to fund America’s covert war against the socialist Sandinista government in Nicaragua. The incident became infamous as the Iran Contra scandal. Other controversial pardons in recent history include President Gerald Ford granting clemency to President Richard Nixon for Watergate and installing a vigilante program against political dissidents. President Bill Clinton pardoned billionaire fugitive Marc Rich while George W Bush commuted Scooter Libby's sentence, the man convicted of the CIA leak scandal. There is an international precedent for recognizing and releasing political prisoners. France did it with its anarchists, Germany with the Red Army, Great Britain with the IRA. Not the US government. While a Senate committee once recognized the abuses committed by the FBI in persecuting activists for political reasons, Obama continues a long tradition of presidents who refuses to use his power of pardon for America’s alleged political prisoners. http://rt.com/usa/news/obama-political-prisoners-usa/ added by: MotherForTruth

Glenn Beck floats absurd rumor that there are over 150 million Islamic terrorists worldwide

Besides the young Muslim men whom the FBI recruits, funds, and gives the means and support to carry out attacks within the US, there are no doubt terrorists worldwide who are a danger to innocent people. And no I'm not referrring to rogue elements of the Mossad or the CIA, whom are known to fund real terror groups like the Jundallah, and assign them to carry out bombings and political assasinations in Iran and stir up ethnic tensions with bordering nations. No I'm talking about REAL religious fundamentalists who are willing to commit acts of terrorism for whatever reason. There is no doubt that they exist. But 157 million of them? Glenn Beck's willingness to float such an absurd rumor shows that Glenn Beck is perfectly willing to continue to propagandize for the Israel and the Military Industrial Complex's fake War on Terrorism, as he has done so many times in the past while pretending to be anti-establishment. *** On his radio program this morning, Fox News host Glenn Beck said that he suspects that close to 10 percent of Muslims are terrorists: BECK: What is the number of Islamic terrorists? One percent? I think it’s closer to 10 percent, but the rest of the PC world will tell you ‘oh no, it’s minuscule.’ Okay, well, let’s take you at your one percent. Look at the havoc of one percent of Muslims causing on the rest of the world! According to a Pew report from last year, there are 1.57 billion Muslims in the world. Thus, by Beck’s calculations, there would be 157 million Islamic terrorists — more than half the population of the U.S. Even at 1 percent, which Beck claims the “PC world” believes, there would be 1.57 million Muslim terrorists. But there is probably more than just foolishness behind Beck’s comment. For example, as Media Matters notes, while at CNN, Beck asked then Rep.-elect Keith Ellison (D-MN) — the first Muslim ever elected to Congress — “What I feel like saying is, ‘Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies.’” Listen here: added by: maasanova

The FBI successfully thwarts its own terrorist plot

The FBI is obviously quite pleased with itself over its arrest of a 19-year-old Somali-American, Mohamed Osman Mohamud, who — with months of encouragement, support and money from the FBI's own undercover agents — allegedly attempted to detonate a bomb at a crowded Christmas event in Portland, Oregon. Media accounts are almost uniformly trumpeting this event exactly as the FBI describes it. Loyalists of both parties are doing the same, with Democratic Party commentators proclaiming that this proves how great and effective Democrats are at stopping The Evil Terrorists, while right-wing polemicists point to this arrest as yet more proof that those menacing Muslims sure are violent and dangerous. added by: maasanova

Oops! ‘Rightwing’ Terror Suspect Turns Out to Be a…Leftwinger

It seems that whenever you hear about a “rightwing” hate crime nowadays, it turns out the the perpetrator turns out to be a leftwinger…much to the disappointment of liberals who continue to maintain the fiction about a violent Tea Party movement. And the latest case of a violent “rightwinger” who turns out to really be a leftwinger comes from my own county of Broward here in South Florida. With my condolences to the left who have been “robbed” of yet another example of supposed Tea Party “hate crime,” here is a report on the arrest of the suspect by Bob Norman of the Broward Palm Beach New Times: The woman charged by the FBI with making a threat that led to the lockdown of more than 300 Broward County schools after hearing

As Miley Cyrus Turns 18, What’s Next?

Find out what the birthday girl has planned for 2011. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus at her 18th birthday on Sunday Photo: Jeff Vespa/MC/WireImage Miley Cyrus is 18. The “Hannah Montana” star is finally able to vote, and that means she has a whole future ahead of her in the world of music and movies. As 2010 wraps up, it seems that 2011 will be just as busy for the teen star, and while she’s taking a break from music (not that you’d be able to tell, thanks to her bevy of music videos and awards-show performances), she has a bustling film career for fans to follow in the coming 12 months. Cyrus recently wrapped her Ashley Greene co-starring flick “LOL: Laughing Out Loud,” which saw the star not only filming Stateside but also in Paris. The movie follows teens who rely on the Internet to socialize, leaving their parents ( Miley’s mom is played by Demi Moore ) confused by the modern relationships their children are in. “[Miley] is a true professional, and she truly has a wonderful family,” Moore said about her teen co-star. “It really shows.” The veteran actress plays the overbearing, confounded mom of Cyrus’ character, who gets freaked out after accidentally reading her daughter’s journal and finding out just how out of touch they have become. Miley is also getting ready for some action for her next role in the flick “So Undercover,” where she’ll play “a tough, street-smart private eye hired by the FBI to go undercover in a college sorority.” The flick means that the star will have to learn to fight for the role. “She’s basically this chick who grows up as a super tomboy, and she’s an FBI agent and gets thrown into a bunch of girls that she doesn’t understand because she’s been around her dad, who’s been in the FBI his whole life,” Miley explained. “And basically, by having to go undercover and be someone that she’s not, she kind of finds the person she is, because she realizes she doesn’t have to carry the weight on her shoulder of what her dad was, and she can be her own person.” While Miley has finished shooting “Hannah Montana,” her hit Disney series won’t go off the air until 2011. “I think that she’s growing with the show, and I think it’s such a great platform for her,” her pal Selena Gomez told MTV News about the star’s plans to walk away. “And she’s lived up to it as wonderfully as she could, and I think she continues to carry it, but she’s ready for other things.” Until then, Cyrus will hang out with her family for her big day, something that she was looking forward to the last time we spoke with her. “I’m not going to go crazy; [just] have a fun party and then maybe take a vacation with my family … because that would be really cool. I think we need time to all be together,” she said. “So that would be rad if we could all go to the beach or something. … [I have] no idea [where we’re going]; somewhere near water. I’m a water baby; I have to be near the water and I love doing scuba and going out and being on a boat.” Share your birthday wishes for Miley in the comments! Leonardo DiCaprio To Star In JFK Assassination Flick

In ‘Legacy of Secrecy,’ actor will play FBI informant who claimed that Mafia boss ordered president’s murder. By Eric Ditzian Leonardo DiCaprio Photo: Evan Agostini/ Getty Images Perhaps Leonardo DiCaprio is planning to clone himself. That might be a wise move, considering the slate of potential projects he’s been lining up recently. The three-time Oscar nominee has already signed on for the Clint Eastwood-directed “Hoover,” a biopic about the controversial FBI director. Then there’s the potential for “The Wolf of Wall Street” with director Ridley Scott, Baz Luhrmann’s take on “The Great Gatsby,” a starring role in an adaptation of the best-selling nonfiction book “The Devil in the White City” and a slew of other flicks in various stages of development. To that hefty roster, add one more project: DiCaprio is set to star in “Legacy of Secrecy,” an adaptation of a book about the assassination of John F. Kennedy. According to Variety, he’ll play FBI informant Jack Van Laningham, who allegedly learned that a Mafia boss had ordered the president’s murder. According to the book, which incorporates declassified FBI files detailing the FBI operation, Carlos Marcello, a known Mafia godfather, confessed to Van Laningham that he was responsible for JFK’s assassination. Many of Marcello’s associates were questioned in connection with the assassination, but Marcello himself was not named in the Warren Report, the official investigation into the tragedy. Warner Bros. is planning a potential 2013 release, though there’s no word about when production might begin. DiCaprio, who signed on to produce the film through his Appian Way slate after his father introduced him to the book, hasn’t been seen on the screen since this summer’s “Inception.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
