Danny Glover Reacts To News Of ‘Lethal Weapon’ Reboot

‘I like what we’ve done before in the past,’ actor tells MTV News at Sundance. By Aly Semigran Danny Glover Photo: MTV News It’s been nearly 13 years since the fourth and seemingly final “Lethal Weapon” movie was released in theaters. But it was recently reported by Deadline.com that Warner Bros., along with producer Joel Silver, has sought out writer Will Beall to make a reboot of the action/ comedy franchise with an entirely new cast. While in the past there had been talks of a possible “Lethal Weapon 5,” featuring the original cast and reportedly to be penned by Shane Black, conflicting schedules as well as Mel Gibson’s shattered public image had shelved it for the time being. MTV News caught up with one of the series’ stars, Danny Glover, at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival on Friday to discuss the news of a remake. The 64-year-old actor, who said he hadn’t heard anything about it yet, channeled his character, Roger Murtaugh, as he said with a laugh, “I’m too old for this!” Glover, who was attending Sundance to screen his latest film, “Black Power Mixtape,” went on to talk about Mel Gibson , his onscreen partner in crime (fighting) from the original blockbusters. “I thought it was, for me and Mel, a wonderful journey,” he said of his troubled co-star, adding, “I love Mel. Mel’s my friend.” As for a potential reboot, Glover said, “I’d like to think that the four we did were still magical and people will still reference the four ‘Lethal Weapon’ [films],” adding, “I like what we’ve done before in the past.” Glover also seemed skeptical about a reboot without director Richard Donner, who directed all four films, at the helm. “Dick Donner is the one who’s behind all this. Dick Donner is the one. He’s really the magic behind this [franchise],” Glover said. “There’s no way this could have been done, the four ‘Lethal Weapon’ movies, without Richard Donner.” Glover continued to praise his former director, saying Donner allowed him and his co-stars “the space for us to … create the kind of relationships, touch the human relationships that we did in that movie.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . J.K. Simmons Reveals ‘Spider-Man 4’ Character Arc

‘J. Jonah Jameson was going to be somehow exiled or disgraced or demoted,’ actor tells MTV News at Sundance of scrapped film. By Eric Ditzian J.K. Simmons Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — We’ll probably never know the full extent of what Sam Raimi had planned for “Spider-Man 4,” including widespread rumors that John Malkovich would play the villain Vulture . Sony Pictures bailed on the project early last year and is currently rebooting the franchise with Marc Webb in the director’s chair. But pieces of Raimi’s aborted “Spider-Man” puzzle could drip out in the future. In fact, J.K. Simmons, who played Daily Bugle head honcho J. Jonah Jameson, kicked MTV News a puzzle piece when he outlined his character’s planned arc for the flick. “J. Jonah Jameson was going to be somehow exiled or disgraced or demoted and end up in some little cubicle somewhere and be railing, even more than usual, against the world,” Simmons told us at the Sundance Film Festival . The actor was in town to promote “The Music Never Stops,” a moving drama about a man whose brain tumor renders him unable to differentiate past from present. But our talk inevitably turned to the “Spider-Man” that will never be, and Simmons admitted he was sad to see his version of the franchise die off — not least because it meant he wouldn’t get to cash that hefty check. “I’m still reeling from the rug being pulled out of us,” he said. “I had just bought a house I can’t afford!” Shortly before Sony pulled the plug, Simmons had been eying work on another three “Spider-Man” films and was having creative meetings with Raimi. “There wasn’t a script-script yet, but I had seen Sam a few weeks before that and we talked about story ideas, because on those movies, we always started on the script and we expanded on it,” he explained. “There was a lot of either us coming up with stuff in the room or doing it literally on set — a lot of improv-y stuff with the whole cast in those office scenes.” Simmons added: “He was saying, ‘This is the basic outline, now go bring me funny stuff.’ ” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . New Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Pics: Is Jack Sparrow Draggier Than Ever?

These days, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise feels less like a magnificent Disney attraction and more like a poorly themed miniature golf course in a Midwest suburb. At World’s End was the grim eighteenth green where we lost our patience for good. And yet, avast: The new pics of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides exhume the drag queen shenanigans we loved about the first film. There’s Ian McShane putting the “Merrol Flynn” flair in Blackbeard. Enjoy the preview now, as the actual film will feel probably like endless dinner theater. (Sorry, Geoffrey Rush.)
