REVIEW: Popes Are People Too in Nanni Moretti’s We Have a Pope

In the ’70s New York Magazine ran occasional contests, in one case asking readers to submit greeting cards for unlikely occasions. Nanni Moretti’s We Have a Pope — it original title was Habemus Papam — could use one of those entries as its tagline: “Saw your smoke, now you’re Pope, congrats!” Actually, it’s kind of a bummer to be Pope, which is the idea behind this way-too-gentle but still potentially incendiary comedy by Nanni Moretti (director of the 2001 Palme d’Or winner The Son’s Room ). Michel Piccoli stars as a sad old cardinal who’s surprised to find himself elected to the biggest job in the world — or at least the one with the flashiest costumes. All the other voting cardinals are relieved not to have been chosen — one of the numerous cute gags in the movie involves shots of nervous Vatican pope-deciders casting their votes while whispering variations of “Not me, Lord! Please, not me!” Piccoli seems OK with the appointment at first, and then suffers a panic attack. And what sane person wouldn’t? A psychoanalyst (played by Moretti himself, who also co-wrote the script, with Francesco Piccolo and Federica Pontremoli) is brought in to delve into Piccoli’s psyche, although he’s not allowed to ask questions about the subject’s dreams, sexual fantasies, mother or childhood. What else is there? Before long, Piccoli escapes the Vatican and emerges, blinking, in the outside world, where he comes to terms with his lifelong ambition of being a theater actor. Being a Pope is high theater, but it’s not the kind he wants. The big problem with We Have a Pope is that Piccoli (historically a wonderful and charming performer) just looks shell-shocked every minute. There’s no texture to the performance. The zonked expression on his face is the same in every sequence: He looks as if he’s pondering which cardigan to wear to the big bocce tournament. Still, as lukewarm as We Have a Pope may be as a piece of filmmaking, Moretti doesn’t tread particularly gently into sacred territory. The picture could be more irreverent, but at least it dares to suggest that popes are people too. If nothing else, Moretti does come up with great gag in which a trio of jolly cardinals, thrilled that their pope-choosing duties are over (or at least they think they’re over) try to get their fellow cardinal BFFs to go out for doughnuts and a Caravaggio exhibit at a local museum — the Vatican equivalent of cracking open a cold one. Justin Bieber Recording With One Direction, Usher

One Direction’s Niall Horan tweeted about collabo. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber is loading up on all-stars for his Believe album. The latest is none other than the world’s hottest boy band: One Direction . Direction member Niall Horan broke the news on his Twitter feed Wednesday, writing , “In the studio with our boy @justinbieber last night, it’s gona sound great!” Band mate Liam Payne confirmed the Internet-shattering collabo, adding , “Got a first listen to Justin Bieber’s new album yesterday wowww big songs!!! It’s gunna be a smash … Expect the unexpected :O” Bieber seemed to enjoy the hang with his new pals as well, responding to Payne with the Tweet, “@Real_Liam_Payne Thanks buddy. Good chillin with u guys.” As the Huffington Post reported, Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, seeded the promise of the shriek-inducing duet, tweeting about the potential One Direction studio action, “[A collaboration is] very possible. He likes them and thinks they are good dudes. All people of that generation should be there to help each other.” The singer is also making some beautiful music with his mentor and guiding light: Usher. On Wednesday, the Biebs tweeted that he was in the studio with, “@iawill and @usherraymondiv going in!” He didn’t reveal the name of the song Black Eyed Peas mastermind will.i.am was working on for the pair, but followed with the (grammatically challenged) amped-up thought, “Me and @usherraymondiv gotta have a duet on every album.” They’re just a few of the superstars he’s recruited for the project. Mike Posner was the co-producer on “Boyfriend,” and other bold-faced names in the mix include Timbaland, Drake
and Pharrell, as well as possible assists from Lil Wayne, Ke$ha and Kanye West
. Bieber has already landed a hit with the first single, “Boyfriend”
 which sold 520,000 downloads
in its first week. He has plenty of other things to celebrate as well. On Wednesday, the Hollywood Reporter said that Bieber and Braun will pick up hardware at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival at the Disruptive Innovation Awards ceremony, where they will be honored for their contributions, “In the world of business, technology, arts, entertainment and beyond.” The April 27 ceremony will specifically pay tribute to the pair for the, “Historic discovery of Bieber on YouTube and his subsequent social media rise.” Related Photos Justin Bieber Gets Slimed At Kids’ Choice Awards! Adam Sandler Officially Indefensible

“Going into a conversation where you’re defending Adam Sandler is normally not going to work in your favor. I learned this six years ago when I was doing my shift hanging out with Holocaust survivors, and one of the old guys actually turned to me and said, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen,” and this was coming from a man who was in Auschwitz. There was no way I was going to try to defend the merits of Sandler talking gibberish to a room full of men who lived through one of the darkest periods in all of humanity. If he thought Sandler making a bottle of shampoo battle a bottle of conditioner was bad, then I had to agree.” [ Splitsider ]

The Avengers Will Close the Tribeca Film Festival, Play Host to ‘Local Heroes’

The Tribeca Film Festival has announced The Avengers as the closing-night selection of its 11th annual event, where Joss Whedon’s summer superhero blockbuster will have its New York premiere on April 28 — and for a good cause, according to Marvel and fest organizers. “Honoring the spirit of the Tribeca Film Festival, the screening will allow the opportunity for Marvel’s The Avengers to celebrate everyday heroes from police agencies, fire departments, first responders and various branches of the U.S. military,” reads a statement just over the transom at ML HQ. “These local heroes will have an opportunity to attend the screening and meet the cast.” Marvel Studios’ producer Kevin Feige adds: “We all know and love our iconic Super Heroes, but when it really counts, it’s our real-life heroes who save the world every day by making it a better place for all of us.” Whedon, meanwhile, reacted with customary cheekiness: “Showing at Tribeca is both an honor and a double homecoming for me, who grew up in Manhattan, and for the movie, which wrapped production there. I’m thoroughly psyched to be closing the festival with our intimate little think-piece.” More to come at Movieline as Tribeca gets underway next month. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Madonna Slammed By Deadmau5 In Expletive-Filled Rant

Shortly after her appearance at Ultra Music Festival, Deadmau5 calls Madge a ‘f—ing idiot’ on his Facebook page. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: AFP/Getty Images Madonna surprised partygoers at Ultra Music Festival over the weekend when she took the stage to introduce EDM star Avicii. But one of dance music’s biggest stars didn’t meet her appearance with such excitement. Deadmau5 took to his Facebook after her cameo to criticize the singer (who just dropped her album MDNA this week) for a joke she made. It was Madonna asking “How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?” that left the producer a bit perturbed as Molly is a thinly veiled reference to the drug MDMA, which is also referenced in the title of Madge’s new album. “Very classy there madonna. ‘HUR DUR HAS ANYONE SEEN MOLLY???’ such a great message for the young music lovers at ultra. quite the f’n philanthropist. but hey, at least yer HIP AND TRENDY! F—ing cant smack my head hard enough right now,” he wrote on his site. “Seriously, i giveth not a f—ing single F— for slating on madonna for reaching an entirely NEW level of idiocy … i can appreciate her meteoric career, and all good deeds done, but WHAT THE F— WAS THAT? That’s your big contribution to EDM? Thats your big message to ultra attendees? Hipster speak for looking for drugs? F— off you f—ing IDIOT. F—.” Seemingly knowing that his expletive-filled Facebook rant about her appearance would spark debate, he added, “well if this doesnt start a f—in flame war, not sure what will. lol. “yeah, i really kinda leeeeeeeeroy jenkins’d that s— huh… MDNA / Molly / MDMA / whatever .. something about a track? still seems the same to me, coz its still, in my opinion, unnecessary promotion of the sh– that really held EDM down for years.” Deadmau5 received tons of feedback, some agreeing and others siding with Madonna. Hours later, the famed EDM producer wrote a much lengthier post on his Tumblr to clarify what he meant by his comments regarding Madonna’s “Molly” statement. “Im not perfect. i have my vices, and some of them are probably more harmful than a recreational drug or two… but i do know that i am at the very least morally obligated not to blatantly inflict or advocate anything that’s detrimental to society, others health, etc,” he explained in the post, titled “Responsibility.” “So, if you can be pandered with MDMA references, then at least pander your own ass with a good sense of responsibility which will enable you to make the personal choices that are right for YOU… then i wont have to feel like a f—ing moron on a stage because you paid money to listen to some warm humming sounds high as f—. Besides, one day ill get older, and i dont want a bunch of f—ing irresponsible f—heads on my lawn. RESPONSIBLE f—bags, much preferred… but will still be asked to [get] off my lawn for being a f—bag all the same.” Were Deadmau5′ comments out of line, or was Madonna’s joke inappropriate? Madonna Trashed By Deadmau5 For Glamorization of Ecstasy

Madonna has come under attack from Deadmau5, one of the world’s most famous DJs, for glamorizing ecstasy use, allegedly, during a recent concert. Her Madgesty took the stage at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami this weekend, asking crowd, “How many people in this crowd have seen molly?” “Molly” is a slang term for MDMA, one of the key ingredients in ecstasy, a drug hugely popular within the electronic dance music community. Incidentally (or not) Madonna’s new album, which drops today, is called MDNA . Watch her address the crowd at the 45-second mark below: Madonna at Ultra Music Festival The crowd apparently loved the veiled inquiry from Madonna, but Deadmau5 is not a fan at all, going on Facebook and tearing her a new one. “Very classy there madonna. ‘HUR DUR HAS ANYONE SEEN MOLLY???’ such a great message for the young music lovers at ultra,” he wrote. The Mau5 added, “Quite the f’n philanthropist. but hey, at least yer HIP AND TRENDY! f*cking cant smack my head hard enough right now.” Bottom line: Mind-altering drugs are not cool, ravers. So says a man-mau5 whose fan base is probably on them 97 percent of the time.

Swedish House Mafia’s Fiery Masquerade Motel Welcomes 10,000 Guests

EDM trio kick off explosive two-day fest at Miami Music Week with help from heavy-hitting openers like Thomas Gold and Calvin Harris. By Akshay Bhansali Fans at Ultra Music Festival 2012 Photo: Getty Images MIAMI — On Friday, Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello — the trio also known as Swedish House Mafia — gave fans at Miami Music Week an event to remember. Their two-hour-plus spectacle at Grand Central Park featured stadium-style house music with a backdrop of pyrotechnics and fireworks. Add to that the dazzling graphics bouncing off five enormous LED screens, and it was clear that SHM had accomplished an impressive high mark that won’t be easy match on Saturday night (March 24), when the event kicks off its second day. MTV News caught up with the Swedes just before their set and they talked to us about the long road to their massively successful Masquerade Motel mini-festival. “We’ve done it again,” Angello raved. “For [us], to go out there and enjoy our own party, which is something like this [in scale], it’s amazing to be here.” Last year’s tented, single-day Masquerade party on South Beach “was amazing,” Angello added, “And the year before that was amazing; we’ve come a very long way.” Lined with palm trees, tall office buildings and residential apartments, Grand Central Park had the vibe of being isolated from the rest of Miami, and that made a party filled with 10,000 SHM fans feel intimate. But before the trio even took the stage, a spectacular lineup of opening acts did more than warm up the crowd. Asked about the all-stars preceding them, Seb, Ax and Steve beamed with pride. “We have NO_ID,” Axwell said of the Dutch duo newly signed to his Axtone Records imprint. “We just think that they have a really interesting sound, which is kind of like chunky-groovy-sexy house, so it complements what we are doing very well. Otto Knows is also here. “[Otto is] a young kid from Sweden, one of my really close friends,” Ingrosso chimed in. “He’s like my little brother. We are starting to make music and he just released his first single ever. “Thomas Gold is here,” Axwell added. “Alesso, a guy called Calvin Harris . “Yeah, I don’t know if you know him,” Ingrosso chuckled with a knowing nod to Harris’ accolades on the EDM scene and, most recently, for his work with Rihanna. “Yeah, he’s another guy we found,” Angello joked. “No, Rihanna found him!” Axwell laughed. “He’s always been very interesting and doing creative stuff. By the time the Swedes took their positions behind the decks, it was clear 10,000 screaming fans were ready to take the party to the next level. Just as they’ve done on their last two Stateside Masquerades, they launched into the organ-laden edit of Ax & Sebastian’s “Together”; they followed that with latest hit single, “Greyhound,” marking the song’s drop with a fireworks display. What followed was a clever series of mixes of some of the most popular anthems of the last six months. Among them were Axwell’s edit of Michael Calfan’s “Resurrection” mixed into Fedde Le Grand’s remix of “Paradise,” and “Antidote,” which was given a pyro burst. The crowd went mental when Dirty South and Usual Suspects’ “Walking Alone” was blended perfectly with SHM’s “Miami 2 Ibiza” “That’s right, Miami, it is straight appreciation for ‘Miami 2 Ibiza,’ ” Ax told the crowd. “We realize that are a lot of parties this week and we definitely feel honored that you’ve come to us this week!” SHM also treated fans to set staples, including “Troll” ; Nari & Milani’s “Atom”; Ingrosso, Alesso and Ryan Tedder’s “Calling (Lose My Mind)”; Deniz Koyu’s remix of “Dangerous”; and SHM’s remix of Coldplay’s “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.” “Are you making new friends?” Axwell asked the partygoers. “Maybe some from the opposite gender? Maybe falling in love? For sure, we are falling love. The Swedish House Mafia loves you guys. Thank you for coming down!” But one of the most unexpected gems of the night came at the very end, when fans got to hear a cook-up Axwell told MTV News in our pre-set chat that he couldn’t wait to play: The SHM/Laidback Luke collabo “Leave the World Behind” (featuring Deborah Cox) was merged with Knife Party’s remix of Porter Robinson’s “Unison.” That mashup was received with a roar from the crowd as the high-energy dance party became another one for the books. NO_ID, Third Party and AN21 join Alesso and Calvin Harris as openers for Swedish House Mafia on the second (and final) day of the Masquerade Motel on Saturday. Miami Music Week is going down, and MTV News is on the ground! Check back all week as we report from EDM’s biggest parties, bringing the latest news from your favorite electronic dance music stars!
