Exclusive: Tupac Coachella Hologram Creator Tells How He Resurrected Rapper

‘It was [Dr.] Dre’s vision to bring this back to life,’ says Nick Smith president of the company that created the Tupac hologram at Coachella. By Gil Kaufman 2Pac hologram at Coachella Photo: Getty Images The Coachella festival is a place where minds routinely get blown, usually due to an awesome set or a killer reunion from one of your favorite bands. But on Sunday night it was thanks to the ghostly re-appearance of West Coast rap legend Tupac Shakur . He materialized on stage alongside his old friend Snoop Dogg during a crowd-pleasing set by the Doggfather and Dr. Dre, which also featured appearances from Eminem, 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa and Warren G . The resurrection of ‘Pac , who was murdered in 1996, would have been a face-melting surprise had word about the stunt not leaked out just a few days before the set. But the 100,000 or so fans who were on hand still couldn’t believe it when Tupac materialized on stage to rip off “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted.” “What up, Coachella?” the shirtless, pants sagging MC asked the crowd before bouncing into the classic single “Hail Mary.” “We worked with Dr. Dre on this and it was Dre’s vision to bring this back to life,” said Nick Smith, president of AV Concepts, the San Diego company that created the hologram. “It was his idea from the very beginning and we worked with him and his camp to utilize the technology to make it come to life.” Smith said he wasn’t allowed to talk about the creative aspects of the production — including how the hologram was able to seemingly perform the set in synch with Snoop and whether all the vocals were ‘Pac’s — but he did say that his company has the ability to recreate long-dead figures and visually recreate them in the studio. “You can take their likenesses and voice and … take people that haven’t done concerts before or perform music they haven’t sung and digitally recreate it,” he said. The hologram was the latest visual magic pulled off by AV, which is also behind the 2005 Grammys performance featuring Madonna and the holographic members of the Gorillaz, as well as holograms used in concert by Celine Dion and the Black Eyed Peas. The Tupac hologram was several months in the planning and took nearly four months to create in a studio and though Smith was not able to reveal the exact price tag for the illusion, he said a comparable one could cost anywhere from $100,000 to more than $400,000 to pull off. “I can’t say how much that event cost, but I can say it’s affordable in the sense that if we had to bring entertainers around world and create concerts across the country, we could put [artists] in every venue in the country,” he said. The life-size Tupac was amazingly life-like, down to the late rapper’s signature tattoos, Timberland boots, jewelry and movements, all of which were also recreated under the direction of Dre. The hologram, of course, already has a Twitter page and more than 3,300 followers at press time. A spokesperson for Dr. Dre could not be reached for additional comment at press time. Alabama Shakes: Rustic Roots To Main-Stage Success

Much-hyped band, opening for Jack White, releases debut, Boys & Girls . By James Montgomery Alabama Shakes Photo: MTV News It’s not exactly a stretch to say the Alabama Shakes have come out of nowhere — it would, however, be incorrect. After all, they hail from the town of Athens, Alabama (pop. 21,897), and, since forming in 2009, they’ve logged thousands of hours playing sweaty, soulful gigs throughout the Southeast — though Egan’s Bar in nearby Tuscaloosa remains their spiritual home. Since January 2011, they’ve been working on their debut album, paying for recording sessions themselves using money from their various day jobs (painting houses, delivering mail), and slowly but surely building a bit of buzz, namely on blogs like Aquarium Drunkard , which posted an MP3 of the band last summer and inadvertently got them a deal with ATO Records. In November 2011, they finished that debut disc, and in March 2012, the Shakes tore through the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. On Tuesday, their journey finally came to a head with the release of Boys & Girls, a crackling, creaky collection of ringing, downright retro guitars, pealing organs and, of course, frontwoman Brittany Howard’s voluminous, velvety voice. Not surprisingly — given the Shakes’ Southern roots and the laundry list of adjectives their music inspires — long-suffering rock critics have already embraced both the band and their sound, dubbing them everything from the genre’s next great saviors to the new kings and queens of retro soul. But, as Howard explains, she prefers to call it one thing, and one thing only: “It’s rock and roll. Think about Chuck Berry … rock and roll. AC/DC, rock and roll. Little Richard. James Brown was doing some rock and roll. That’s what it is,” she told MTV News. “R&B and rock and roll go more hand in hand than I think a lot of people want to admit.” MTV News caught up with the Shakes, MTV PUSH Artist of the Week , on Tuesday at New York’s Studio at Webster Hall before they took the stage for Live in NYC, MTV Hive’s concert series . Their performance will be available on-demand next week. Howard and bandmates Steve Johnson and Heath Fogg told us they are proud of everything that’s lead them to this point and that they did everything their way. “We’d go up to Nashville once a month, at most, to make the album,” Fogg shared. “We’d get up there Friday night, work all day Saturday, head back home Saturday night … It was a long process. “We’ve been wanting this record to come out for a long time,” he continued. “To get the opportunities we’ve gotten, we were all pretty shocked. We’d get taken out to dinner by all these big labels, and the whole time I kept thinking I’d have to pay for these meals, like, I’d stand up and kinda grab for my wallet, and they’d be like, ‘No no no.’ ” Johnson added: “When we were making [ Boys & Girls ], there were certain recordings where it felt like you were almost in the room with the band while they were being recorded. Just background voices, the stir of the room; it felt like there were other people in there, and we were all fans of that kind of stuff, so we decided to leave little things in. “The songs have a feel to ’em: There’s kind of a sway of the rhythm, it picks up and slows down. We weren’t sitting there on a metronome, playing to a click track or something like that, and I think that was the overall goal: to make a good-sounding, good-feeling album. And if there was a mistake, but it didn’t mess with the groove of the song: leave it in.” Of course, the Shakes are trying very hard to come to terms with their newfound fame, which includes a sold-out North American tour, dates in Europe and the U.K. and an opening slot for avowed-admirer Jack White on his solo trek. Mixed in with all of this is the very real struggle to remain attached to their roots, which are as far-reaching as they are humble. After all, they’re not a “retro soul” band, they’re a rock and roll band. One whose time has finally come. “A lot of people listened to James Brown and Elvis Presley when I was growing up,” Howard explained. “We had a station called Solid Golden Oldies, and I would spend a lot of time with my grandmother, and that’s what we would listen to. We’d be in the kitchen cooking or cleaning, listening to Solid Golden Oldies, and she’d tell me about Dion and Elvis Presley, how her and her friends would go dance to Elvis records. “I just grew up loving it and understanding it and just the sound and the honesty of the music was something I’ll never forget,” she explained. “And I ran into these guys, and they all get it too. But, we also listen to a lot of other stuff — it doesn’t stop there. That’s why we don’t say we’re retro soul, because I also love MMJ [My Morning Jacket], the White Stripes, Kings of Leon … I’m not stuck under a rock or anything. I don’t think any of us are.” Related Videos PUSH: Alabama Shakes Related Artists Alabama Shakes

‘Hunger Games’ Not First Franchise To Go Through Director Shakeup

‘Twilight,’ ‘Spider-Man,’ ‘Iron Man’ among other high-profile series that changed directors along the way. By Josh Wigler Gary Ross Photo: WireImage “The Hunger Games” franchise, just like the fictional games themselves (minus all the death and bloodshed), has lost a much beloved player in director Gary Ross , who has decided not to return for the developing sequel, “Catching Fire.” Persistent rumors that Ross’ days in Panem were numbered concluded with the director’s official departure Tuesday night, leaving the continuing tales of Katniss, Peeta and Gale without a visionary to guide them for the time being. Though Ross’ decision is a blow for “Hunger Games” enthusiasts everywhere — yours truly included — it’s certainly not the first time that a director has stunned fans by leaving a high-profile franchise at an unexpected time. From your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to the Boy Who Lived, here are five other filmmakers who parted ways with beloved franchises. Sam Raimi and “Spider-Man” After three films — two widely adored and one critically panned — Sam Raimi’s days swinging alongside “Spider-Man” came to an end. In the midst of pre-production on a fourth Tobey Maguire-starring adventure, both Raimi and Maguire parted ways with Sony over creative differences. The result of their ousting: Sony rebooted the “Spider-Man” brand, with an all-new “Amazing” installment hitting theaters this summer from director Marc Webb and “The Social Network” co-star Andrew Garfield. Jon Favreau and “Iron Man” Spidey isn’t the only big-screen Marvel superhero who lost a crucial member of his creative posse. Director Jon Favreau , who helmed the first two “Iron Man” films for Marvel Studios, said his goodbyes to Ol’ Shellhead in December 2010, opting to focus instead on another Disney property, “Magic Kingdom.” Just as Ross contends there’s no bad blood between him and Lionsgate, Favreau and the remaining “Iron Man” players appear to have left on good terms; indeed, the director appeared alongside Robert Downey Jr. at the Hero Complex Film Festival last June for an onstage reunion and geek-out. Tony Stark lives on even without Favreau, blasting off next summer for a brand-new mission under director Shane Black’s watchful eye. Paul Greengrass and the “Bourne” series Following “Bourne Ultimatum,” the third film in the spy thriller series, two-time “Bourne” director Paul Greengrass walked away from the franchise to work on other films. Leading man Matt Damon left as well, out of loyalty to the director, leaving “Bourne” producers in a lurch. How do you make a Jason Bourne movie without Jason Bourne? You make “The Bourne Legacy,” apparently. Longtime “Bourne” writer Tony Gilroy wrote the script and directed the latest installment, putting an all-new character played by Jeremy Renner in the hot seat this time around. With Renner in play, the door remains open for a future Damon-Greengrass “Bourne” return. Catherine Hardwicke and “The Twilight Saga” Just as “The Hunger Games” lost Ross, so too did the “Twilight” series lose its original director. Catherine Hardwicke was the first filmmaker to bring the hotly anticipated love story of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan to life, but despite the success of that first film, Hardwicke decided not to direct “New Moon” , due to what she described as “timing” issues. Even without Hardwicke behind the lens, “Twilight” continued to do massive business at the box office with different directors for each film; Bill Condon is the only filmmaker to tackle multiple “Twilight” movies, closing the series out with this coming November’s “Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” Chris Columbus and “Harry Potter” There would be no Hogwarts without J.K. Rowling, of course, but there would be no Hogwarts-at-the-movies without original “Harry Potter” director Chris Columbus. He helmed the first two “Potter” films with wonderful whimsy, but that tone would not have fit with future movies in the franchise as Harry’s world grows progressively darker. The boy wizard’s war against Voldemort was therefore chronicled by several other directors following Columbus’ post-“Chamber of Secrets” departure, with David Yates ultimately stepping in to helm the final four installments in the series. Tell us what you think of Gary Ross’ “Hunger Games” departure in the comments section! The art of getting high has gone to a whole ‘nother level Snoop Dogg Releases New Book “Rolling Words” Made From Real Rolling Papers How cool is this? Snoop Dogg has figured out a way for his fans to get high off of reading. The veteran rhyme-slinger, with the help of San Francisco agency Periera & O’Dell, has created a smokable lyrics book called ‘Rolling Words.’ According to psfk, the book features lyrics of the Doggfather’s classic songs like ‘Gin & Juice,’ ‘Nuthin’ Like a ‘G’ Thang,’ ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot,’ among others, printed on rolling paper. The book cover was made out of hemp-like material with the spine doubling as a match-striking surface. In addition, the pages are perforated for easy tearing and sharing. A limted-run of the book will be available for concertgoers who attend the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif. The event takes place on April 13-15 and April 20-22, which Snoop is the co-headliner with Dr. Dre.
