Indie band takes MTV News on a post-Bumbershoot vintage-shopping spree in Seattle. By Matt Elias David Price of Brite Futures Photo: MTV News SEATTLE — On a sunny Sunday morning, local band Brite Futures stood outside of the Fremont Vintage Mall, still riding high from playing the main stage at the Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival the previous day. Despite a late night of celebrating, BF graciously invited MTV News to check out one of their favorite hometown haunts. “We’re here at the Fremont Vintage Mall,” singer Shaun Libman explained. “This is a place with a lot of crazy stuff, and we always find something weird and cool here.” Thus, we went into the kitschy vintage store with three-fifths of the band. As for the other two members, singer/guitarist Luke Smith told us, “One actually has a real job. I shouldn’t say that, but he’s working at a cafe right now. And the other is our drummer, and he just floats around and we never really know where he is.” Inside the store, an eclectic blend of choice records, vintage threads and everything in between (like a velvet Elvis painting) is laid out on two levels. The band quickly took to a set of ’90s neon Looney Tunes caps, which, if you think about it, perfectly sum up the synth-happy indie-rock band: bright, fun and electric. Moving on, Libman spotted a faux-snakeskin trench coat. “Everybody has to have one snakeskin jacket in their repertoire,” Libman declared. “If anybody can pull that off, Luke Smith can.” Without hesitation, Smith threw on the coat and posed for our camera. Once he found his choice, the other members went on the hunt for their personal picks. After sifting through some records, singer and multi-instrumentalist Claire England saw a totally rad ’80s gold gown. “This is my prom dress,” England said. “Who’s your prom date?” Libman asked. “Justin Bieber,” England coyly replied, adding that they would slow dance to one of his songs while he sings it to her. The band continued on, finding an old prosthetic leg, a bin of black-light posters and a vintage Seattle SuperSonics hat (from their beloved former home team, whose arena they played in the day before). Spending the morning with the band, it was hard not to be enveloped by their enthusiasm. After all, they’ve got a new album, Dark Past, dropping November 1. It’s BF’s first full-length since 2008’s Glistening Pleasure, when they were known as Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head (a name Natalie Portman apparently wasn’t cool with). With infectious singles like “Baby Rain” and “Too Young to Kill,” no doubt you’ll be hearing a lot more from this band over the coming months. But before then, the band had to settle on some purchases at the Fremont Vintage Mall. At the checkout, they decided on one of the Looney Toons hats, the gold ’80s prom dress, a vinyl soundtrack from Disney’s “The Rescuers,” the snakeskin coat, a prosthetic limb and a plastic flamingo — you know, just your average Sunday purchases in Seattle. Child actors all grown up, Oscar-winning directors popping their collars, stars going silly for the camera — anything goes when you stick actors and filmmakers in the studio for some good, old-fashioned family-style portraits. The Toronto Film Festival is a world away from Venice , and the difference is especially acute when you hop from one to the other: Toronto is big and glossy, while Venice is intimate and glowing — it’s like the difference between lacquer and gold leaf. But each has its own appeal, and the scale of Toronto is appealing by itself. It’s a little overwhelming but exhilarating, too.
In our Fall Movie Preview, Drake Doremus says he ‘was shocked’ over chemistry between Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones. By Amy Wilkinson Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin in “Like Crazy” Photo: Fred Hayes/Paramount For his romantic weeper ” Like Crazy ” — the 2011 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize winner about two college sweethearts torn apart due to deportation — director Drake Doremus tapped a veritable who’s who of Hollywood’s young, up-and-coming talent, including Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence. But it was 27-year-old Felicity Jones whom he took a real gamble on, casting the actress after having only seen an audition tape filmed in her London flat. He said it was a risk well worth the return. As part of our Fall Movie Preview, Doremus spoke with MTV News about the autobiographical nature of his tender drama, taking a chance on Jones and all those comparisons to “Blue Valentine.” Click for photos from fall’s biggest flicks! MTV : This is such a heart-wrenching love story. Is it autobiographical in any way? What was your inspiration? Drake Doremus : I think, trying to make a genuine love story, it would be silly not to try to dig deep and find pieces of yourself and put them in the film. So there’s a lot of emotional truth in the film that I’ve gone through and relationship elements, for sure. It’s a very personal love story. MTV : Felicity Jones is already gaining a lot of buzz for her performance. It seems like she kind of came out of nowhere. How did you cast her? Doremus : Felicity sent me a tape from London. I had seen about 50 girls in Los Angeles. I’d brought a few of them in with Anton and did the chemistry read, and I was not quite feeling it yet. She sent a tape of herself in her flat in London. She just embodied everything that was this character. I immediately called her and told her to come. It was a total gut call. I had never even seen her with Anton, and I didn’t even know if they’d have chemistry, but something in my gut told me we had to cast Felicity Jones and that she was the right person for this. And man, oh man, that’s probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my career. MTV : Were you surprised by the actors’ intense chemistry given that they hadn’t tested together? Doremus : Yeah, I was shocked. I mean, it’s a tribute to how game they were to go down this path and go down this journey. At the first rehearsal session, I asked them very specifically, ‘You have to understand what kind of a journey we’re going on here. We’re going to live this thing. We’re going to breathe it, and it’s going to come from the inside out. You’re going to have a four-week love affair. Are you guys game to do this?’ They were 100 percent game. MTV : You improvised a lot of scenes in this film. Is that a process that was specific to this project, or a method you prefer? Doremus : It’s a formula I’ve been developing for the last couple of years that I’m continuing to fine-tune and use. It’s essentially just a form of writing the characters, the backstory and the emotional arc and where we’re going. The actors are always encouraged to do and say whatever they feel and let things happen sort of organically. MTV : Does this approach leave you with a lot more footage to work with than if you’d strictly stuck to a script? Doremus : Absolutely. It’s crazy, actually. We could have cut four, five completely different versions of this movie. It would have been the same story but how we got to the end point would have been very different. You give yourself options, and the editing process becomes the third leg of the writing stool. MTV : Many critics have been calling “Like Crazy” this year’s “Blue Valentine.” What do you make of those comparisons? Doremus : Well, first of all, it’s an honor. I think that’s a very beautiful film. But I think they’re very different. You know, I think this film is a much more romantic, innocent and hopeful and optimistic look at love. Shame , the second film by Steve McQueen (the British director, not “Bullitt”) had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last week. Even the jaded critics in the audience were shocked by the film’s sexplicit NC-17 content, including indiewire ‘s David Gritten , who called the movie “edgy” and “transgressive.” Gritten went on to say: Michael Fassbender plays Brandon, a successful thirtysomething Manhattan executive…He is obsessed by sexual gratification, and surfs internet porn on his computer at work and his laptop at home. He seduces women in bars, on the subway and in his office. Carey Mulligan co-stars as Fassbender’s capricious sister, who apparently proves that sex addiction can be genetic: Fassbender has several scenes involving full-frontal nudity and Mulligan has one of her own. .. Presumably it would receive an NC-17 rating, and even liberal American audiences are more likely to be turned off by its explicitness than their European counterparts. …in other words, a perfect date movie, if your date is a smut-minded European. (And if she is, does she have any single friends we can call?) This will be the full-frontal debut for pixie-maned Carey, who has briefly shown her suck sacks in When Did You Last See Your Father ? (2007) and The Greatest (2009). Carey’s will NOT be the only female flesh on display, either; earlier this summer, several up-and-coming actresses shocked passerby by engaging in public nudity while filming in Manhattan ( See the pics here ).
