Interpol, Chemical Brothers and Lauryn Hill also help kick off first day. By Mary J. DiMeglio Kings of Leon perform on day one of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival 2011 Photo: Getty/ Jeff Kravitz INDIO, California — Despite finding message-board haters among some festival vets for snagging a headlining spot at the 2011 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Kings of Leon won over the first-day crowd on Friday night, as the masses in attendance couldn’t help but sing and sway to the band’s radio-friendly rock. Saying they were “tired of playing the new stuff,” the Kings dug out “Molly’s Chambers” from their pre-big-time 2003 debut EP, Holy Roller Novocaine , which joined more-recent hits “On Call,” “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody.” The rockers’ Who-reminiscent “Black Thumbnail” finale of feedback and drum pummeling ended not with smashed guitars, but with good-ol’-boy singer Caleb Followill knotting up his handkerchief to toss into the adoring crowd. Check out photos from the Coachella Festival . The Kings’ bouncy, Southern-tinged, feel-good rock offered just a hint of the variety that the festival prides itself. More than 100 bands are slated to hit the stage during the three-day event, which was named by Pollstar as North America’s best outdoor music festival for seven of the past eight years. Now in its 12th year, Coachella set attendance records in 2010, packing 75,000 people per day onto the Empire Polo Club fields. This year’s extravaganza sold out six days after tickets went on sale in January. The resulting slew of ticket resellers and scams prompted organizers Goldenvoice to post a message on the Coachella homepage warning desperate seekers: “Do not purchase tickets from a third party” and “Anyone trying to sell a paper ticket is not legitimate.” In a change that began last year, single-day tickets were not available. Those lucky enough to place their orders legitimately received wristbands delivered to their door in elaborate packaging that included a calendar and photos. Interpol — whose set included fan favorites “Slow Hands,” “Say Hello to the Angels” and “Obstacle 1” — ended with a much-hyped collaboration with director David Lynch and the Creators Project that took trippy to a new level. That performance pushed an intensity of lights and sounds up, up, up until there was nothing to do but fade out and leave people walking away saying — like so many do after experiencing a Lynch creation — “Well, that was something, ” while not being sure whether they liked or understood it. After announcing, “They are always leaving us for last call,” Flogging Molly closed the Outdoor Stage with their riotous Irish punk. For those who still had the energy, the Chemical Brothers enticed the crowd to make one more swing by the main stage by turning up every light and bringing it home with “Galvanize,” “Do It Again” and “Don’t Think” in front of an eye-candy backdrop of psychedelic spinning heads, bouncing balls and splattering paint. Earlier on the main stage, former Fugees leading lady Lauryn Hill delivered a soulful set while accompanied by a brass section of tubas, saxophones and trumpets. After promising, “I’m gonna play some classics, some songs you know,” Hill pleased fans with “Everything Is Everything” and “The Sweetest Thing.” Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, up against the late-afternoon heat of the day, succeeded at getting heads nodding as they let the beats remain in the background and their tight, old-school rhymes shine through. Ozomatli surprised any metal lovers who caught their set by playing the first minute of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets,” from the metal icons’ landmark album of the same name, which celebrated its 25th anniversary earlier in the week. Metallica themselves will rock the polo fields next weekend, along with Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth, when they bring their only scheduled Stateside Big 4 concert to the site. In other unexpected nods to ’80s rock, Cee Lo Green managed to sneak some bars of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” into his disappointingly short set. Those who stuck around for his late start heard “Lady Killer,” Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and “F— You.” Elsewhere, Nosaj Thing found new fans with his flavor of jungle in the Gobi tent, Cut Copy had the Mojave grooving and Robyn had girlfriends boosted on shoulders to wave their arms to her girlie jams. And while Crystal Castles suffered some unfortunate issues with their vocals, their glitch still managed to entrance. The Sahara Tent boasted Erick Morillo, Sasha and Boys Noize, backed by the most impressive light shows in Coachella memory. In the midst of the dance-heavy day, Cold War Kids and the Black Keys offered welcome bluesy, soulful breaks. Still to come this weekend: Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, Paul van Dyk, Wiz Khalifa, the Strokes, Duck Sauce and Kanye West. Did you go to Coachella? Give us your review in the comments below! Reports have Tom Hanks and Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black attached to the project. By James Montgomery Billie Joe Armstrong performs with the cast of “American Idiot” Photo: Slaven Vlasic/ Getty Images It’s been green-lit, killed, resurrected and put on the back burner, but now it appears that the long-in-the-works film version of Green Day’s American Idiot album might finally become a reality. On Wednesday (April 13), Reuters reported that Universal is in negotiations to pick up the screen rights to the Broadway version of “Idiot,” and has hired Michael Mayer — who directs the stage production — to shoot the movie version. Reuters also reported that Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning writer of 2008’s “Milk,” is “in discussions” to write the screenplay, and that Tom Hanks will serve as producer on the film, along with Green Day themselves. (Hanks and his business partner Gary Goetzman were producers on the film version of the Broadway smash “Mamma Mia!,” the musical based on the songs of ABBA.) All of that means that, after a voyage that started way back in 2004 — when Billie Joe Armstrong told MTV News that the bandmembers were “talking” to screenwriters about adapting the album for the big screen — American Idiot could finally find its way to your local multiplex. In 2006, Armstrong promised fans that the film version of Green Day’s hit album would “definitely … happen,” but the band instead turned their attention to creating their next album (2009’s 21st Century Breakdown ) and a stage version of Idiot, which premiered at Berkeley, California’s Berkeley Repertory Theater in ’09 before heading to Broadway. Still, they remained adamant that a film would be coming, with Armstrong telling The Associated Press that it would echo the feel of cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Hanks’ reported attachment to the project is also interesting, considering that last year, Green Day dismissed his involvement as “just talk.” A spokesperson for Green Day could not be reached for comment by press time. Meanwhile, the “American Idiot” musical will officially end its Broadway run on April 24, with Armstrong reprising his role of St. Jimmy. ‘It’s something that I would have loved to do,’ singer says on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Michael Tran/ FilmMagic Rihanna was rumored to be a potential judge on “X Factor,” alongside Simon Cowell and her former label boss L.A. Reid . However, the songstress confirmed to Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday (April 13) that while there were discussions about her joining the show, she couldn’t put her career on hold long enough to commit. “I just heard about it actually, but, yes, it’s something that I would have loved to do, actually. But our schedule doesn’t allow and it’s a demanding schedule to be on that show. You have to be around months at a time, which is impossible for me.” What was easier to schedule was getting Britney Spears on the remix of her track “S&M.” “It was automatic; it was a go. She was great, really professional,” she said of the track, which was released earlier this week. “I think that’s what makes this collaboration so successful: It’s two female artists within the same genre of music. We have similar sounds. It’s very unexpected to see two artists collaborate and get together. The fans are really appreciative of that.” She added that while the song is “very provocative,” she thinks people need to take the lyrics and redirect the message to be about something more than just sex. “When I first heard this record, I automatically knew those words didn’t mean [that] … it was about my love-hate relationship with the media,” she explained of the message, one that Spears can also certainly relate to. “I knew what the song was to me and I wanted to make that point in the video. The video got banned in a lot of countries even though I didn’t think it was that raunchy. I thought it was fun and quirky. I really didn’t expect the song to go this far.” Rihanna’s upcoming busy schedule includes performing at the Billboard Music Awards next month and co-headlining the V Festival with Eminem in the U.K. this August. MGMT, Girl Talk, Big Boi and deadmau5 also on the bill of the three-day San Francisco event scheduled for August. By Gil Kaufman Muse’s Matthew Bellamy Photo: Andy Sheppard/ Redferns If you’ve never been to San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate Park then you may not know that it’s the kind of place where barefoot types are very likely to break out into spontaneous dance between bouts of stick juggling and hula hooping. Which is why the lineup for the 2011 Outside Lands Music & Art Festival is perfect for the historic patch of green in the City by the Bay. The fourth annual edition of the fest, scheduled for August 12-14, will be headlined by Muse, Phish (who will play two sets), Arcade Fire, the Black Keys, MGMT, the Decemberists, Erykah Badu and the Warren Haynes Band. That eclectic mix of jam-band, techno, indie-rock and arena powerhouses reflects the sonic diversity on the rest of the bill, which will also feature deadmau5, the Roots, Girl Talk, Big Boi, Beirut and Sia playing alongside iconic rocker and Creedence Clearwater Revival founder John Fogerty, New Orleans funk legends the Original Meters, gospel great Mavis Staples and re-formed Clash spinoff group Big Audio Dynamite. Also on the bill are: Arctic Monkeys, STS9, Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band, Best Coast, Phantogram, Junip, Little Dragon, Foster the People, the Joy Formidable, Major Lazer, OK Go, the Greyboy Allstars, Old 97’s, !!!, Latyrx featuring Lyrics Born & Lateef, Phantogram, STRFKR, Toro y Moi, Vetiver, Tamaryn, the Fresh & Onlys and others. Tickets go on sale on Thursday at the Outside Lands website, and a significant part of proceeds from every ticket will benefit San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department. Last year’s Outside Lands event also featured a similarly diverse variety of artists, including Kings of Leon, the Strokes, My Morning Jacket, Janelle Mon

‘It just came out of nowhere,’ actor said of getting the role. By Eric Ditzian Michael Shannon Photo: Slaven Vlasic/ Getty Images When we met Henry Cavill at WonderCon recently, the actor couldn’t quite wrap his head around the idea, even months after being tapped for the job, that he’ll be donning Superman’s cape and becoming the Man of Steel for a new generation. Michael Shannon, by contrast, was only officially announced as General Zod — the villainous alien who’ll face off against Superman in Warner Bros.’ “Man of Steel” — on Sunday. Yet he too is having a hard time comprehending the fact that he’s now a part of the franchise. “This ‘Superman’ thing is ridiculous. It just came out of nowhere,” Shannon said in his first public comments about the casting, delivered during an appearance at RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. “I was talking to my agent … she’s like, ‘How about ‘Superman’? I’m like, ‘What?’ The idea that I would ever be in ‘Superman’! I’m like, ‘Are you serious?’ ” It was true: Director Zack Snyder wanted Shannon, who nabbed an Oscar nod for “Revolutionary Road” but is perhaps best known for his turn on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” for the role of Zod (a part previously played by Terence Stamp in “Superman” and “Superman II”). So Shannon headed out to meet Snyder. “[H]e’s seriously sitting there and he’s telling me, ‘You can’t read the script, so I’m just gonna tell you what happens.’ And he spent a half hour telling me every scene in this movie,” Shannon said, adding with a laugh, “he’s at his home in Pasadena and I’m looking out — there’s the Rose Bowl, there’s little hummingbirds flying around. I’m like, ‘I’m on acid!’ ” Snyder eventually decided Shannon was the right guy for the part, but the director had to convince the higher-ups at WB. They ended up bringing him in to read with Cavill. “They said, ‘You have to come back because we want to see if you and Superman have chemistry,’ ” Shannon explained. A month after that first meeting, Shannon said, the part was his. And what does he think of Cavill as Superman? “I think this guy will be all right,” Shannon said. Check out everything we’ve got on “Superman: Man of Steel.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
