Kristen Stewart Reviews Rob Pattinson’s ‘Cosmopolis’

‘It’s so good, it’s so cool, I’m so proud of him,’ she gushes to MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News Kristen Stewart made quite a statement when she attended the Cannes Film Festival premiere of “Cosmopolis” last week in support of co-star (and boyfriend?) Robert Pattinson . So when MTV News caught up with her during our Sneak Peek Week Q&A for her latest movie, “Snow White and the Huntsman,” we had to ask for her review of the film. “He’s so good in it!” Stewart gushed about Pattinson’s performance. “He’s really, really [good]. I don’t even know how he [did it]. I couldn’t even understand it. It’s so good, it’s so cool, I’m so proud of him. Thank God.” The superstar went said her overall experience at the highbrow film bonanza was just as positive as her review of Pattinson’s performance. “It’s the ultimate celebration,” she said of the glitz and glamour of the fest, which she also attended on behalf of her film “On the Road.” “I was so oddly placed in my body, which I’m so unable to do. I was not nervous. I had the greatest time it was so cool.” After its Cannes premiere, critics pointed out the film’s odd notes but were divided on whether Pattinson was the perfect choice for the lead role. Directed by David Cronenberg, the film follows Eric Packer (Pattinson) in the not-too-distant future as he’s chauffeured through Manhattan on his way to get a haircut. His entire world is falling apart — his marriage is failing, his financial status is slipping and even his very life is being threatened. Snow and her Huntsman meet the dwarves in MTV’s Sneak Peak Week preview. By Jocelyn Vena Chris Hemsworth and Kristen Stewart in “Snow White and the Huntsman” Photo: Universal Pictures Kristen Stewart came through with more than juicy scoop about her role in “Snow White and the Huntsman” when she sat down with MTV News on Tuesday night (May 29) as part of Sneak Peek Week : KStew also brought an exclusive clip from the movies, which opens this Friday. In the teaser, Snow White (Stewart) and the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) are seen hanging upside down from a tree after being captured by dwarves. And it turns out she, too, lost it all when the Queen took over power. Two New ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Teasers Showcase Even More New Footage

The marketing campaign for The Dark Knight Rises has certainly been a fascinating one, as it’s seemingly broken all the traditional rules—first, the trailers were ambiguous and revealed very little (imagine that—a modern trailer that doesn’t spoil the film); second, the theatrical poster was, well, crap; third, the TV spots, normally 30 second bits of Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : ScreenCrave.com Discovery Date : 29/05/2012 05:09 Number of articles : 2

‘Men In Black’ Shoot Down ‘Avengers’ At Holiday Weekend Box Office

‘Avengers’ finally forced to #2 after nearly a month at the top. By Ryan J. Downey Will Smith in “Men In Black 3” Photo: Sony Pictures It wasn’t Loki, an army of otherworldly Chitauri nor any other super-villain that finally defeated Captain America and his pals. A satiric adaptation of a 1970s soap opera and a big-budget action flick based on a board game tried and failed. Ultimately, it was another franchise with comic book roots that ended the nearly month-long reign of “The Avengers” at the top of the box office, as “Men in Black 3” became the #1 movie in America with an estimated $70 million debut over the four-day Memorial Day weekend. The third entry in the Will Smith/ Tommy Lee Jones franchise, based on a short-lived comic series from the early 1990s, took in another $133.2 million overseas, giving it a worldwide total of $203.2 million. Box-office prognosticators had predicted a somewhat stronger opening for the 3-D film, which carried a reported production budget near $250 million. Enthusiasm and nostalgia for the 1997 original, about a pair of criminal-alien-busting special agents, remains high. But the 2002 sequel was poorly received by critics, who were a bit kinder to “MIB 3,” which added Josh Brolin as a younger version of Jones’ character in time-travel scenes. The first “Men in Black” made $589 million around the world. Its follow-up trailed behind with $442 million. The opening weekend for “MIB 3” wasn’t far off from “MIB 2.” Will Smith, top-billed in hits like “Hancock” and “I Am Legend,” broke a four-year hiatus from the screen with “Men in Black 3.” Critics were not kind (the film had a 67 percent score on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes at press time) and audiences who saw the movie assigned it a D-plus CinemaScore. “Chernobyl Diaries” was the only other widely released new film over the holiday weekend. The low-budget horror tale was #6 with just $9.3 million. “Men in Black 3” was able to do what “Dark Shadows” and “Battleship” failed to do in recent weeks by knocking “The Avengers” to #2, though Marvel’s superhero team-up flick still generated gigantic numbers considering how long it’s been in theaters. “The Avengers” earned another $46.9 million over the four-day weekend (and crossed the $500 million mark on Saturday, making it the first movie to ever do so) for a total of $523.6 million. Not adjusted for inflation, “The Avengers” is now the fourth-biggest movie of all time, behind “Avatar,” “Titanic” and the final entry in the “Harry Potter” movie franchise. “Battleship” sunk even further at the box office, dropping 57 percent to #3 after a less-than-impressive debut last weekend. The blend of high-seas action and sci-fi made $13.8 million over the holiday for a domestic total of $47.3 million. “Battleship” has made $232.7 million overseas but has earned even less than Taylor Kitsch’s last film, notorious big-budget bomb “John Carter,” over the same amount of time in theaters. “The Dictator” was #4 during its second weekend with $11.8 million for a $43.6 million total. “Dark Shadows” was #5 with $9.4 million for a total of $64.9 million. The latest Johnny Depp/ Tim Burton collaboration won’t make anywhere near the box-office coin of films like “Alice in Wonderland,” though it did manage to pass “Sweeney Todd” over the weekend. The movie carried a reported production budget of $150 million. In the limited-release world, “Moonrise Kingdom” collected $669,000 from just four theaters over four days. That estimate puts it ahead of “Dreamgirls” with the highest per screen average debut of any live action film. That number is also higher than filmmaker Wes Anderson’s previous best, “The Royal Tenenbaums.” Also in four theaters over the weekend: “The Intouchables,” a French film that has already made $340 million worldwide, grossed $137,438 through Monday. One of the stars of “The Avengers,” Chris Hemsworth (Thor), will appear in theaters again this weekend as one of the title characters in “Snow White and the Huntsman.” The movie co-stars Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron as the evil queen. It was directed by newcomer Rupert Sanders. Cannes Bans Controversial Comedy The Anti-Semite

A year after Lars von Trier was publicly castigated for making a Hitler joke at Cannes , the festival has banned a controversial comedy by French comedian/provocateur Dieudonné. Entitled The Anti-Semite , the film was scheduled to play not in the official festival but in the Cannes Film Market, but outrage over its content — including mockery of Auschwitz and Dieudonné in Nazi dress — led the organization to scrap screenings. According to Agence France-Presse, the film includes “images deriding Auschwitz,” “Dieudonne’s violent and alcoholic character dressed as a Nazi officer for a fancy dress party,” and “Holocaust denier Robert Faurisson [appearing] as himself.” Produced by the Iranian Documentary and Experimental Film Center, The Anti-Semite stars Dieudonné, who has been charged numerous times for violating European laws with his controversial statements and performances, including one recent show in France that was halted mid-performance by authorities “for breaking local defamation laws.” As for the Cannes screening, the Cannes Film Market’s Jerome Paillard explained the move thusly: “Our general conditions ban the presence of all films threatening public order or religious convictions, as well as pornographic films or those inciting violence.” [ AFP via The Wrap ]

Robert Pattinson: Working With ‘Cosmopolis’ Director Was ‘A Relief’

Actor reveals how he prepared for his role in the David Cronenberg film at a Cannes Film Festival press conference. By Fallon Prinzivalli Robert Pattinson at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival Photo: AFP Director David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis” received mixed reviews after its debut at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival on Friday (May 25). Critics were split on whether they felt Robert Pattinson was right for the lead role. Some felt his performance was bland, but others thought he nailed the part, fitting well into the director’s vision. During a press conference for the film, Pattinson explained why he and Cronenberg work well together, chalking it up to Cronenberg’s careful direction. “If [a director’s] sitting on the set, a bunch of people will ask you questions all the time,” he said. “And then a lot of directors, I find, are kind of exhausted by the time they’re actually supposed to do their job with the actors. They’re not really listening anymore. I think David is listening so intently when you’re doing a scene. … When you feel something in a scene, you know that he’s seen it, which is such a relief. And it makes you actually pay attention to what you’re doing as well.” Cronenberg also made Pattinson aware of different camera angles and how the placement of cameras can greatly affect his performance. “I think a lot of directors and actors refuse to accept anything about camera technique,” Pattinson continued. “[Cronenberg was] completely frank about it and [said], ‘Listen, if I put a camera here, it’s going to totally affect the way you perform.’ And it really did, the blocking was like direction, which I never really experienced before.” “Cosmopolis” follows Eric Packer (Pattinson) in a futuristic New York City. As he’s chauffeured through Manhattan on his way to get a haircut, the world is falling apart around him — protestors are rioting, his marriage is failing, his vast financial status is declining and he soon discovers clues that reveal an attempt on his life. When asked how he prepared for the taxing role, Pattinson told the audience he spent a lot of the time concerned over how his performance would come together. “I kind of spent two weeks in my hotel room worrying and confusing myself. And I remember the weekend before shooting, I called David — because we had no rehearsals — to talk to him about it. [I said,] ‘I just wanted to sort of ask one question,’ ” he recalled, mimicking his timid tone. “He said, ‘Do you want to talk about the movie for a second?’ So I went to his house and I think he just said that it doesn’t really matter: ‘Let’s just start and something will happen.’ ” Worrying aside, Pattinson found a way to bring his character to life. He didn’t improvise scenes and he didn’t change any of the lines. He stuck to the script and followed Cronenberg’s vision for his character as it was laid out in front of him. “I think [Eric Packer’s] impossible to approach like you would a normal character,” he said. “What I liked about the script initially was its lyricism and just the rhythms of it. Normally when you do a movie, you can kind of blur the lines and make it your own. But with this, I didn’t want to change a single word, even the punctuation. That made it easier, it’s like you’re doing a song instead of a movie. It freed you up. If you’re trying to do something in a cerebral way, it becomes about ego and it’s silly at that point.” Did Pattinson find similarities between himself and his character? “I do think people are trying to kill me all the time,” he joked. Eli Roth’s Star Wars Comic Book is Kind of Adorable

Star Wars opened 35 years ago today, which prompted Movieline pal Mike Ryan to probe the memories of contemporary filmmakers for a collective glimpse at the film’s towering influence. It’s a pretty diverse sample, from Jon Favreau to Diablo Cody to Gary Ross to Simon Pegg, but for my money, nothing beats Eli Roth’s illustrated Star Wars comics… from age 8. On the one hand, the guy’s art hasn’t improved that much in 30 years. On the other, it was kind of adorable then! He explains: Star Wars was the movie that changed my life. I can honestly say there was life before Star Wars and after. I obsessively drew pictures of it and in school took it upon myself to write the next few chapters of the story since I couldn’t wait for the next films to come out. Star Wars became the center of my universe. It was all I wanted to talk about in school and on some level influenced everything I write. I wanted to be Han Solo, but deep down knew I was more of a C-3PO. Aww . Roth’s accompanying Exorcist illustration is equally if not more inspired; if nothing else, check out the piece for Joe Johnston’s incredible story of working with George Lucas. Lucky guy. Also: God, I am old. [ HuffPost Entertainment ]

Nicole Kidman Talks ‘Raw And Dangerous’ ‘Paperboy’ At Cannes

Lee Daniels-directed film, also starring Zac Efron and Matthew McConaughey, has met with decidedly mixed reception. By Kara Warner Nicole Kidman in “The Paperboy” Photo: Lee Daniels Entertainment Much ado is made over the glitz and glamour that surrounds the exotic Cannes Film Festival each year. A lot of what brings so many celebrities and so much attention to the international film fest is its location. Who doesn’t want to travel to the sandy shores of the French Riviera for “work”? The other big draw, of course, is the opportunity to see movies of all genres, budgets, origin, etc., many of which can get an early jump into awards-season consideration with positive reviews from the notoriously hard-to-please Cannes audiences. From the outside looking in, “The Paperboy” is one of the films at the festival that has major awards-buzz potential because of its director, Oscar nominee Lee Daniels (“Precious”), and its cast: Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey and John Cusack. Judging from the initial reactions to the small-town, sexed-up murder mystery, however, the reception has been decidedly mixed. “Daniels wants to show us realities that other movies don’t, and I truly think that he’s got the talent and drive to do it. But there’s a major downside to that impulse,” wrote . “If what happens on screen is in any way odd or exaggerated or, even worse, if it defies common sense, the clang of falseness is going to be deafening. “The line on this movie in Cannes is the same one that a lot of critics, including me, took on Daniels’ ‘Shadowboxer’: that it’s so luridly overripe it’s nuts — or, at the very least, high camp,” Gleiberman continued. “Certainly, you’re going to have that feeling during the scene when Kidman, at the beach, saves Efron from a jellyfish sting by urinating on him — which is an anti-jellyfish home remedy, but the way the scene is shot, I think Daniels had something else in mind. The wrong notes, the extremeness, just piles up from there.” Efron and Kidman spoke to the film’s extremes during a press conference Thursday (May 24). “I don’t think I was supposed to feel comfortable,” Efron said. “It’s like life. This character is supposed to be learning the ways of the world, and that can be very uncomfortable. But it’s also exciting.” “I’d been looking as an actor for something raw and something dangerous,” Kidman said. “I may be uncomfortable watching the movie. But that’s my job — it’s my job to give over to something, not to censor it, not to put my own judgments of how I feel as Nicole playing the character. I am there to portray a truth.” And no matter the discomfort surrounding the onscreen nudity, sex or the pee scene, Efron said he loved the experience of making the movie. “I’ve been in love with her for a long time, since ‘Moulin Rouge,’ “the actor said of Kidman. “It was the loveliest time in the world for me.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . One Direction Hit ‘MIB 3’ Premiere Armed With Toy Guns

‘I just think it’s fun and the action’s great,’ Louis Tomlinson tells MTV News on the red carpet. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Wigler and Fallon Prinzivalli One Direction Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Armed with Nerf guns, the five guys of One Direction hit up the “Men in Black 3” premiere at the Ziegfeld Theatre, ready to face any kind of challenges. The fivesome, who kicked off their headlining U.S. tour on Tuesday night, took a break from the road to catch the film. They also chatted with MTV News on the red carpet about why they felt they needed a line of defense for the fete. “We’re safe [with them and we’ll use them on] anyone who gets brave,” Louis Tomlinson joked about their Nerf guns. But the fellas did have a real reason for wanting to catch the film: They are big fans of the “Men in Black” franchise and have been for quite some time. “[They are] great films, aren’t they?” Tomlinson added. “I just think it’s fun and the action’s great. We were young when the first came out, so we kind of grew up with them.” Once inside the theater, instead of having to fend off anyone who might have gotten in their way, they gave the guns away to a few young fans who ran up to them. While security did their best to keep fans away from the boy banders, one young girl managed to get to the floppy-haired Harry Styles. All five guys agreed to give the girl their autograph. Before the film started, they hung out in their seats, munching on popcorn while adoring fans and their moms checked the guys out. Later on, at the after-party held on the USS Intrepid, fans followed the band as they made their way around the bash, including down several flights of stairs to the bathrooms. They didn’t stop for anyone, but they smiled and waved occasionally. The guys won’t have too much time to hit up more movie premieres since they are back to playing Thursday night (May 24) in Virginia. One Direction will continue on their summer tour through July.
