Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Culture War Update: Director Speaks Out, Title Cut in Half

After begging and pleading with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan community to please, please not engage in preemptive flame warfare over the rumors and vagaries surrounding the reboot of their beloved franchise, I now recognize the futility of my attempts at diplomacy. This comes after the film’s attached director Jonathan Liebesman — also of this week’s Wrath of the Titans and last year’s eminently regarded ( ahem ) Battle: Los Angeles — only complicated matters with his comments about the kerfuffle. And then there’s the movie’s reported name change. Liebesman toed the company line at last weekend’s Titans junket, urging TMNT devotees to calm down about producer Michael Bay’s proposed alien-turtle-ooze influence — which apparently “comes straight from the series.” I can’t believe I just wrote that, or this: “Look, it’s so funny — if everyone was such a die-hard fan, they would know that the TCRI canisters where the ooze comes from. That is alien ooze. Now I’m not saying what Michael said is exactly what the movie is, because we’re sitting in a room now figuring everything out. So we don’t know, but we are like Michael said: we’re expanding it, and the expansion will be true to the mythology. I promise you: fans will love it.” Even if those fans are to take Liebesman at his word, there’s also this reported nugget that no doubt have them soiling their Donatello jammies: Bleeding Cool has verified that the working title of the upcoming Paramount-Nickelodeon Turtle movie from producer Michael Bay and director Jonathan Libesman is going by the working title of Ninja Turtles . We know all too well where the “Mutant” bit went, but now it seems we’re also losing “Teenage.” We haven’t been able to get a definite statement as to why this title change is occurring, and our sources are not 100% clear on whether or not the Turtles will indeed be adolescents. One of our sources has said: “It seems to be driven by marketing. Think of John Carter and how Disney wouldn’t allow for a title with either ‘Princess’ or ‘Mars.'” Whatever. See you at the refugee camp! I hope they have wi-fi. [ Collider , Bleeding Cool via AICN ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth Not Engaged

‘I’m not engaged. I’ve worn this same ring on this finger since November!’ Cyrus tweeted on Monday in response to rumors. By Christina Garibaldi Miley Cyrus at her Pilates class in Beverly Hills Photo: Splash News Miley Cyrus is putting those engagement rumors to rest. On Monday (March 26), the Internet was abuzz that Cyrus and her “Hunger Games” star boyfriend Liam Hemsworth were going to tie the knot after photos surfaced of her wearing a large sparkler on her ring finger. I’m not engaged. I’ve worn this same ring on this finger since November! People just wanna find something to tal about! It’s a topaz people! — Miley Ray Cyrus (@MileyCyrus) March 26, 2012 But Cyrus took to Twitter on Monday to shoot down the rumors, saying, “I’m not engaged. I’ve worn this same ring on this finger since November! People just wanna find something to [talk] about! It’s a topaz people!” Speculation began last week after Cyrus tweeted a photo of her new manicure and the ring. Most recently, she was spotted sporting the large stone on Saturday as the two posed for pictures on the red carpet at Muhammad Ali’s Celebrity Fight Night XVVIII in Phoenix. Even though they won’t be planning a wedding anytime soon, the couple, who have been dating on and off since 2009, have a lot to be excited about. “The Hunger Games” had the third-biggest opening weekend of all time, beating out all of the “Twilight Saga” movies when it raked in $155 million. Hemsworth and Cyrus will next be seen together on an upcoming episode of MTV’s “Punk’d,” where the former “Hannah Montana” star tells her boyfriend that two naked people have locked themselves in her car, a prank Hemsworth doesn’t seem to be too fond of. “I knew she was doing the show. I honestly thought she had enough respect for me not to do me, and she got me really good,” Hemsworth recently told Ellen DeGeneres. “Your girlfriend comes running around and she’s yelling hysterically and you see two naked people in your car… I think my instincts were pretty right.” Related Artists Miley Cyrus

‘Hunger Games’ Ignites Box Office: Experts Weigh In

One box-office watcher tells MTV News the book adaptation was ‘the hottest party around and nobody wanted to be left out.’ By Kevin P. Sullivan Wes Bentley as Seneca Crane in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate We all knew “The Hunger Games” would debut to enormous opening-weekend numbers, but few could have predicted just how quickly the fire would spread. The YA adaptation opened to an incredible $155 million weekend, passing up “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” and “Spider-Man 3” to have the third-highest opening weekend behind “The Dark Knight” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” Early predictions had “The Hunger Games” opening at a respectable $70 million, not even half the actual total and in range of this year’s “The Lorax,” another recent box-office surprise. As the release drew nearer, analysts bumped up the predicted total to a range of $125 million to $130 million. The reason for the initially low prediction lies with another YA series, according to Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations . “Many people were comparing this to the original ‘Twilight’ film, which grossed $69 million its opening weekend,” Bock said. “Even though the book series was a huge success, many other young adult novels have been translated to film recently and failed to produce the next ‘Harry Potter’ or ‘Twilight,’ so, as an unproven commodity, expectations were tempered a bit with ‘The Hunger Games.’ Even Lionsgate was estimating that the film would debut with a three-day weekend gross of $75 million earlier in the week; they certainly didn’t expect it to nearly eclipse that number on opening day.” Wanna win a Hunger Games special edition HP laptop from MTV News? Click here to enter! The strong push out of the gate came from a combination of an aggressive marketing campaign by Lionsgate and groundswell created by fans of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling books. Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru said it was a precise combination of those key factors that led to such an explosive opening weekend. “The record opening was driven by the loyal fanbase, which is humongous, along with a carefully crafted marketing push that intrigued them and also drew in new audiences in time for the movie’s release,” Pandya said. “Marketing was a key component to the massive debut, as the film wasn’t over-promoted to the point of repelling people. Lionsgate turned the opening weekend of ‘Hunger Games’ into the hottest party around and nobody wanted to be left out.” Lionsgate is certainly not wasting any time in trying to repeat the magic of their biggest hit to date. Production on the sequel, “Catching Fire,” is scheduled to begin this summer with a release tentatively set for November 2013. Pandya believes the next adventure of Katniss Everdeen could even go bigger. “Studios knew to stay out of the way of ‘Hunger Games,’ which is why no other film opened wide this weekend. But now they know how big of a juggernaut it is, and if history is any indicator, the opening of ‘Catching Fire’ will be even bigger in November 2013,” Pandya said. “And unless Disney changes its superhero date, we’re going to see a big-brother battle as Liam Hemsworth’s ‘Catching Fire’ will open just one week after Chris Hemsworth’s ‘Thor 2.’ ” What did you think of The Hunger Games? Justin Bieber Channels Justin Timberlake On ‘Boyfriend’

Lead Believe single dropped at midnight on Monday. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Tween dream swagger is all over Justin Bieber ‘s lead Believe single, “Boyfriend.” Taking several cues from Justin Timberlake’s early post-‘NSYNC work, the track amps up Bieber’s credibility as a teen idol and remixes it with the type of production work longtime pop music fans can appreciate. Lyrically, it sounds a bit silly at times (like when Bieber proposes he and his girl eat fondue by the fire), but Bieber’s delivery of the lines proves that at 18, he’s willing to take the steps to progress forward in the world of pop. Sometimes it seems a little too similar to the way the other Justin delivers lines, but “Boyfriend,” co-produced and co-written by Mike Posner, is light-years beyond the sugary sweet “Baby.” The song opens pretty sparsely, with just a thumping beat, a “woo” noise and Bieber’s sing-songy rap, before a guitar comes in as Bieber makes his plea to win a girl over. The chorus will have girls dancing around thanks to its bumping beat and chugging R&B-influenced instrumentation. He sings, “I could be a gentleman/ Everything you want/ If I was your boyfriend/ I’d never let you go/ I’d never let you go,” before rapping, “Tell me what you like.” Bieber uses some form of the word “swag” no fewer than four times on the track, including the somewhat perplexing line, “Swag, swag, swag on you.” But regardless of what Bieber detractors might have to say, his Beliebers, who have aged right along with their idol, will appreciate his more grown-up sound on the record. The song officially dropped at midnight on Monday. Believe will be released later this year. As for the video, his manager, Scooter Braun, tweeted that it’s already in the works. ‘Hunger Games’ Star Jennifer Lawrence: What’s Next?

A horror movie, two Bradley Cooper films and a return to Katniss Everdeen are all in the works. By Kara Warner Jennifer Lawrence at the “Hunger Games” premiere Photo: Getty Images For those of you who rushed out to the theater to see Jennifer Lawrence and company in this weekend’s box-office blockbuster “The Hunger Games,” how good was Lawrence as Katniss? If you were as delighted and moved by Lawrence’s performance as we were, you’re probably wondering what the Oscar nominee will be up to next. Lucky for you, we have a few answers! Here’s a little rundown of what to expect from Lawrence and where to see more of this talented, charming and all-around likable leading lady. (Side note: Before she jumps right into another project, we hope Lawrence takes a vacation of some sort and gets a little rest and relaxation after her extensive, worldwide promotional tour for “Games.” We loved seeing the cast at so many events and so dressed up, but she has to be exhausted!) Anyway, we have to wait until fall until we get another Lawrence film. The first is the horror/thriller “House at the End of the Street,” co-starring Elisabeth Shue. In the film, Lawrence and Shue play a mother/daughter duo who get wrapped up in the mystery of a murder in a small town. Shortly after the September 21 release of “House at the End of the Street,” fans will see a very brief appearance by Lawrence in “Devil You Know,” playing the younger version of Rosamund Pike’s character Zoe. In November, we’ll see Lawrence in “The Silver Linings Playbook,” the first of two films co-starring Bradley Cooper . “Silver Linings” revolves around a man who tries to put his life back together after spending years in a mental institution. “I just wrapped a movie called ‘The Silver Linings Playbook,’ ” Lawrence told MTV News recently. “And then I’m going to go shoot another Bradley Cooper movie. It’s not a Bradley Cooper movie — Bradley Cooper’s in the movie — it’s a Jennifer Lawrence movie with Bradley in it,” she joked. “Bradley Cooper and I are going to come out with a Jennifer Lawrence/ Bradley Cooper box set.” Their second film together is “Serena,” about a Depression-era couple who face personal complications when they learn that Lawrence’s character cannot bear children, which has a negative impact on the future of their lumber company. Fun fact about “Serena”: Lawrence’s role was originally intended for Angelina Jolie. “I’m not at the status where I have her roles. I have her leftovers, let’s be clear,” she joked of taking over for Jolie. “She left it for me. I have her garbage. No, that’s a wonderful place to be. I’m an actor digging through Angelina Jolie’s garbage. I’ve made it.” Shooting on “Serena” has yet to start. After her work on “Serena,” we’re all hoping Lawrence will be back playing Katniss for “Catching Fire” or getting painted to play Mystique in the yet-to-be-announced sequel to “X-Men: First Class.” Because “Fire” has a November 22, 2013, release date already locked in place, we’re betting Lawrence will be back wielding a bow and arrow before she’s spending countless hours in the makeup chair to “get painted again” for “X-Men.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . The stirring 2009 documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty took us behind the scenes at Disney Animation to reveal what it’s like when good things happen to good people. But before that, there was The Sweatbox , the 2002 doc that exposed how bad things happen to good people at the notoriously demanding studio — a revelation that virtually ensured the film would never see the light of day. The crackdown worked once and may yet work in the future, but for now, YouTube has all 95 unfinished minutes available for a rare look. John-Paul Davidson and Trudie Styler were granted full access to the Disney process — the dark-arts cauldron comprising writers, directors, animators and executives — as it applied to the doomed project Kingdom of the Sun . The results featured below aren’t especially flattering (particularly to the executives), and Styler’s husband Sting walks his customary line between introspective and pretentious, but as a cautionary tale of snuffed-out Hollywood idealism alone, this one’s worth viewing. ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2’ Trailer Teases ‘Beautiful’ Vampire Bella

Kristen Stewart’s red eyes left one fan ‘speechless’ at the midnight premiere of ‘The Hunger Games’ in NYC. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Stacey Sommer Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn – Part I” Photo: Summit Entertainment NEW YORK — At midnight Friday (March 23), fans had two things to be excited for: the premiere of “The Hunger Games” and the trailer for “Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” The full trailer made its debut ahead of “Hunger Games” and, in it, not too many big, action-packed reveals are made, but one thing’s for sure: Bella is in full vampire mode. “I think the ‘Twilight’ trailer was really interesting,” Esther Portyansky told MTV News at a screening in New York City. “Usually trailers are more about the plot, but I think the people that are gonna watch know what happens in the last one so it was more character shots and getting people’s attentions. Vampire Bella was very beautiful. I liked the red eyes.” The film has amped up Twilighters’ excitement for the November release. “I was so happy. I am so excited,” Elana Lerner said. “I saw the first part of ‘Breaking Dawn’ at 12, and I will do the second one again. It looks awesome. That last part of the trailer, where she looks like she’s about to pounce on that animal, was nice.” Joanna Cruz added, “I’m speechless. I really don’t know what to say about that. It was so quick. It didn’t even give what was going to go on in the movie, all we saw was the red eyes.” That tease was enough to whet Stephen Carrasco’s appetite. “It looks cool. I didn’t read any of the books, but I saw the films and I’m excited to see it,” he said. “It looks good. Those contacts are awesome, like work the red-eye thing.” With more trailers expected to drop before the premiere later this year, Carrasco wants to see “more killing,” and Portyansky agreed that she’d love to see more action. “The next ‘Twilight’ trailer, I think I’d like to see part of the showdown among the vampire coalitions, ’cause as much as the character shots are really good, I’m definitely looking forward to the action.” Directed by Bill Condon, the final movie in the “Twilight” franchise will hit theaters on November 16. ‘Hunger Games’ Fans ‘Blown Away’ At Midnight Showing

Early reports predict midnight box-office totals of more than $18 million. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Stacey Sommer Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate With midnight showings of “The Hunger Games” sold-out for weeks in advance, expectations for the highly anticipated film were even higher for those brave enough to journey to theaters in the middle of the night. Thankfully, Katniss Everdeen and the rest of the tributes did not disappoint. Early reports for the midnight box-office totals predict returns north of $18 million, according to Variety . Those figures put “The Hunger Games” in contention with “The Dark Knight” and “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” which earned $18.5 million and $22.2 million at midnight, respectively. Early predictions for the weekend total estimate “The Hunger Games” earning $125 million . MTV News caught some rabid fans on their way out of the first showings of “The Hunger Games” in New York City, and most of them couldn’t have been more pleased. Joanna Cruz said she was left “speechless” and was “on the edge of my seat the whole time.” Some took their praise ever further. Judith Cruz called it the “the best movie ever.” “I can’t wait to see it again,” she said. “It was awesome. I cried at certain parts.” Though most of the people we interviewed expressed their love of the movie as a whole, a few couldn’t help but point out that they missed some scenes that ended up on the cutting-room floor. “I loved it. I thought it was awesome,” Elena Lerner said. “It wasn’t completely true to the book — they left out a few scenes — but overall, we were both freaking out in our seats. It was so good.” Josh Solomon felt similarly. “I thought the film was very good, well done,” he said. “It missed a couple scenes from the book. It missed spots, but I thought it was done pretty well.” But for one fan in particular, the movie could never live up to the book. “I don’t know how I feel about it. When I read a book, I get very in-depth, and I felt like they missed a lot of what was in the book,” Samantha Cohen said. On the other hand, Esther Portyansky said that the movie was a reminder of why she liked the book so much in the first place. “It was incredible. I was absolutely blown away by it,” she said. “I read the books last summer, and I think I’d almost forgotten how amazing they were, frankly. The movie more than did it justice.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
