‘Dark Knight Rises’ Trailer Reveals Sorry State Of Gotham’s Stadiums

Let’s discuss the newest trailer in the latest edition of The Weekly Rising. By Kevin P. Sullivan Christian Bale in “The Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Jared Wickerham/ Getty Images If you went to see “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” this weekend and you weren’t lucky enough to see the prologue for “The Dark Knight Rises,” you were lucky enough to see the second trailer. And it was a hell of a trailer! Nothing sets the tone like a young boy singing the national anthem, and tone is what the trailer really nails. When you walk away from it, the one idea that lingers is that some bad stuff is going down in Gotham. This new trailer shares that, among other things, in common with the first. It also begins quietly, just like the teaser. Alfred worries about Bruce, and he probably should. It’s been eight years, and not much is good in the city of Gotham. Gordon sits on the chopping block as the city’s police commissioner, even though he let his wife think he died to protect the city. That should be mentioned in his performance review. Selina Kyle plays a much bigger role than we have yet seen. Appropriately, she shows up at a beautifully shot masquerade ball and doesn’t bring good news with her. “A storm is coming, Mr. Wayne,” she warns. “And you and your friends better batten down the hatches.” Her role in all of this still hangs in the balance. Will she be a full-on antagonist for Batman or will she toe the line? She did do Bruce the courtesy of warning him about the storm, so maybe it’s more ambiguous than good guy vs. bad guy. She’s motivated by an idea, along the lines of what got Bruce started in the first place, so that may be the bond that connects them. What that motivating idea is has yet to be disclosed, but she comes off in the trailer sounding like an advocate for the little man. Bane, on the other hand, has no ambiguity to speak of. Between the prologue and the second trailer, we finally get a better idea of what to expect from the masked man. I love his entrance into the football stadium. Then the final punch lands firmly with one of the greatest trailer moments in years. Watching the football field crumble in near silence automatically qualifies that scene as one of the best of 2012. Other films have done similar stunts, but not with such an assured hand, so consider me on-board with Bane’s supposed earthquake machine. Admittedly, it sounded too hokey for Nolan’s Batman movies, but no one can deny the awesomeness of that football scene. Both the prologue and the new trailer prove that the talk in last month’s Empire wasn’t just talk. In just the two short clips, Nolan has established Bane’s presence and a solid argument for him as the choice for the “Rises” villain. He’s big, bad and calculated. Instead of trying to overshoot Heath Ledger’s Joker, Nolan and Tom Hardy are aiming in the opposite direction. If a trailer does its job, we should be left with an idea of what the film will be like without knowing every single story beat. That’s where the trailer succeeds the most. While the stadium lets us know exactly what happens in that moment, we don’t know why Bane does it. We know that he frees and arms prisoners, but for what purpose? Miranda Tate shows up, but we’re still not sure what evil thing — because let’s be honest — she’ll be doing later in the film. Selina Kyle has an agenda, but who’s to say what it is just yet? Now I want to hear from you. What did you think of the trailer? Daniel Craig Calls ‘Dragon Tattoo’ Very ‘Adult’ Movie

‘Babysitters are going to get, hopefully, a lot of money out of this film,’ Craig says, predicting the mature set will flock to theaters. By Amy Wilkinson Daniel Craig Photo: MTV News Rape, murder, intrigue … the feel-bad movie of Christmas may not leave audiences feeling bright and merry but “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” star Daniel Craig suspects the dark drama will inspire smiles among at least one group. “Look, I’m a David Fincher fan, so it was an easy choice to make when accepting this film,” Craig told MTV News at the film’s New York City premiere. “It’s a great story. It’s an adult movie. The babysitters are going to get, hopefully, a lot of money out of this film. That’s why I wanted to get involved.” The film, based on the novel by late Swedish author Stieg Larsson, follows journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Craig) as he tries to solve the 30-year-old murder of teen Harriet Vanger, with the help of asocial hacker punk Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara). Mara has been earning raves for her performance as the damaged heroine and even netted a Golden Globe nomination on Thursday. Craig said he had no doubts as to the newcomer’s abilities. “We all knew she was good. She’s just committed as an actress, and she made all of the right choices with David’s help and everyone else’s help,” he said. “She’s just blossomed as somebody. As I said, we knew from the beginning that she was good enough — it was everyone else who had the problem.” Best known for her work in Fincher’s “The Social Network,” Mara returned the compliment, expressing gratitude for Craig’s help and guidance on set. “Daniel is an incredible actor, and I don’t think we’ve seen him in a role like this before, and he’s brilliant,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better person to sort of have my coming out. He was very patient and generous with me.” “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” opens December 20, a day earlier than its initial release date. ‘New Girl,’ ‘Revenge’ Sneak In Golden Globe TV Nods

‘American Horror Story’ is another new show that received surprise nominations. By Jocelyn Vena Zooey Deschanel in “The New Girl” Photo: FOX Sure, “30 Rock,” “Modern Family” and “Glee” all received Golden Globe nominations on Thursday (December 15), but a bunch of brand-new shows also find themselves up for statues at the broadcast. “New Girl,” “American Horror Story” and even America’s newest guilty pleasure, “Revenge,” all nabbed some kind of nod. The Comedy/ Musical Series nomination for Fox’s Zooey Deschanel vehicle “New Girl” is a bit of a surprise. The rookie sitcom follows Actress – Comedy nominee Deschanel as she plays a recently heartbroken schoolteacher who moves in with three single guys. From there, wackiness ensues. A win for Deschanel (who goes up against heavy-hitters like Tina Fey, Laura Linney and Amy Poehler) would bring some fresh blood to the broadcast. While it’s commendable that new shows are getting recognized, it’s surprising that Poehler managed to earn a nomination for her turn as Leslie Knope but that “Parks and Recreation” wasn’t nominated in the Comedy/ Musical Series category. Living on the polar opposite spectrum, FX’s creepy, soapy “American Horror Story” is an unexpected contender in the Drama Series category. The show is a frightening look at relationships and suburbia, where sometimes the decisions made by the living turn out to be more frightening than the things that go bump in the night. Jessica Lange is up for Supporting Actress. Can the show beat out a show like “Boardwalk Empire” or “Game of Thrones”? Probably not, but it’s nice recognition for one of TV’s most compelling new series. If anything, Lange’s portrayal of L.A.’s nosiest neighbor, Constance, deserves some love. Madeleine Stowe probably won’t take home a trophy for her portrayal of the lovably evil Victoria Grayson on “Revenge” in the Best Actress – Television Series Drama category, but her nomination comes as a delightful acknowledgement of that show’s undeniable ability to keep viewers entertained week after week as they tune in to see what happens to the Hamptons’ richest and most powerful. The most predictable nods, perhaps, go to critical favorites and awards-show darlings like “30 Rock,” “Mildred Pierce,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Modern Family.” But what does come as a surprise is the fact that “Breaking Bad” was snubbed in the Drama Series category, given the show’s critical praise and fan fervor. Hosted by Ricky Gervais for the third straight time, the Golden Globe Awards will air on Sunday, January 15, on NBC. Golden Globes Shocks And Snubs: Ryan Gosling, ‘Dragon Tattoo,’ More

Nominations overlook ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,’ ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Bridesmaids’ breakout Melissa McCarthy. By Josh Wigler Ryan Gosling in “Crazy Stupid Love” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures The 2012 Golden Globes nominations are here, and as always, there are plenty of surprises of both the good and bad variety. Some of our favorite actors walked away with unexpected nominations, while others were shockingly left off the ballot. Movies we did not anticipate making the cut broke past our expectations, while several films we considered shoe-ins were shut out entirely. In other words, it’s just another year at the Globes! From Ryan Gosling to “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” here are 10 of the biggest shocks and snubs among this year’s Golden Globes nominees: Shock: Ryan Gosling Goes for Two There’s no question that this was a big year for the Gos. Not only did he break up a street fight in the viral video seen ’round the world, he also acted the heck out of three great movies: “Drive,” “The Ides of March” and “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” We’ve been on the Gosling train for years now, and it’s fantastic to see him getting recognized by the Globes this year. But it’s what he was nominated for that left us shocked. If the choice were up to us, Gosling would be nominated for “Drive,” not “Ides.” There’s not a lot of Globes love for Nicolas Winding Refn’s phenomenal thriller, save for a much-deserved Albert Brooks supporting nom. But, hey, beggars can’t be choosers. We’re more than happy with the double-header for our guy! Shock: “March” On While we’re on the topic, nobody here on the MTV Movies team would have predicted that “Ides of March” would get so much love at the Globes this year. It’s a strong movie by all accounts, but worthy of nominations in three major categories (Best Actor for Gosling, Best Director for George Clooney and Best Picture Drama)? We’re not so sure. Still, we love Clooney, and we love that he’s getting further awards attention besides his predestined “Descendants” nomination. And there’s no need to repeat our Gosling gush. Snub: Melissa McCarthy Misses Out It’s great to see “Bridesmaids” nominated for Best Picture Musical or Comedy and Kristen Wiig in the Best Actress category — the R-rated comedy was one of our very favorite movies of the year, after all — but we’re absolutely floored and disappointed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s snubbing of Melissa McCarthy. Wiig is wonderful in the film, and without her, “Bridesmaids” would not exist. But without McCarthy, “Bridesmaids” would not be excellent. She was the breakout star. She brought the thunder. She not only deserved a nomination, but arguably a win. Her absence from this year’s Globes is almost as embarrassing as what went down in the bridal shop. Snub: Globes Hates Tattoos We’re thrilled that Rooney Mara snagged a nomination for her transformative portrayal of punk-rock computer hacker Lisbeth Salander, but beyond that and recognition for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ score, “Dragon Tattoo” got left on the bench. After David Fincher and “Social Network” got burned toward the end of last year’s awards season, we really thought he’d at least score Director and Best Picture Drama nods this year. No such luck. Looking at the film on its own merits, “Dragon Tattoo” is just fantastic filmmaking. The Movies team is obsessed with the crime thriller, as you’ll hear in the coming days and weeks. Its lack of recognition at the Globes is more than deserving of some Salander-style revenge. Shock: Extremely Quiet And Incredibly Far “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” got nothing, nada, zip. We won’t call that a snub — it wasn’t our favorite movie of the year — but the fact that it got literally zero nominations is definitely a shock. Don’t count it out of the Oscar race just yet, though: An adapted screenplay nom is almost certainly in its future. Snub: No Nolte Not only was “Warrior” actor Nick Nolte expected to get nominated for Best Supporting Actor, many expected him to win. Surprise: He’s not going to win, because he’s not nominated! Nolte’s nowhere to be found this year, despite his recent SAG nomination . In fact, “Warrior” got absolutely nothing at the Globes. Nolte was really that movie’s best chance, frankly, so we’re starting to wonder about its awards season prospects. Shock: Michael Fassbender has “Shame” The Irish-German actor’s Best Actor nomination was one of the biggest surprises of all. (Sorry, we couldn’t resist.) Fassbender’s fearless performance definitely deserved recognition, but we’re very surprised — and very heartened — to see “Shame” overcome the NC-17 stigma. Odds of a win aren’t in his favor, but Fassbender’s nomination is much deserved after the actor’s absolutely amazing year. Snub: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Snub Perhaps Gary Oldman’s road to Oscar just isn’t meant to be. The “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” got overlooked by Globes against all odds. It really is close to impossible to believe that Oldman has never been nominated for an Academy Award, and we thought “Tinker” would finally be his chance at not just a nom, but a win. But now that he’s been shut out by the Globes, does he really have any shot at all on Oscar night? We’re still hopeful, but not optimistic. Shock: “American” Success Story Before we go, a quick look at TV land. Ryan Murphy’s “American Horror Story” got nominated for Best Television Series (Drama), a move that’s sure to surprise a lot of people (even if that Jessica Lange nomination surprises precisely no one — she was one of our Top 10 TV Characters of 2011 , after all). “AHS” is one of the most thoroughly disgusting, unsettling shows on the small screen, now or ever: How many other programs this year showcased a school shooting in such gory detail, or stitched deceased fetuses together to create one terrible Franken-baby? That said, “Horror Story” also features one of the greatest casts on all of television, and it pushes its plot forward with a ferocity matched by few other series. Like all things on the FX thriller, the “Horror” nomination is a shock, but a welcome one. Snub: “Breaking” Bust No one’s going to argue that Bryan Cranston deserves that Best Performance nomination, but seriously, there’s not a single other “Breaking Bad” nom? That’s just flat-out ridiculous! “Breaking Bad” just came off its greatest season ever. Cranston nailed it as Walter White, but fellow actors Aaron Paul as reluctant assassin Jesse Pinkman and Giancarlo Esposito as meth kingpin Gustavo Fring also turned in marvelous performances worthy of not just nominations, but full-on awards. (While we’re at it, here’s my super-quick opportunity to say that “Sons of Anarchy” should have gotten some love as well. Like “Bad,” this season of “SOA” was not just its greatest one yet, but perhaps the greatest season of television all year.) Acting aside, “Breaking Bad” deserved a Best Television Series spot much more than newbie “Boss” or even “Horror Story,” much as we’re happy to see it on the list. Needless to say, we’re not happy about the oversight. Besides, Hollywood Foreign Press Association, didn’t you hear? Walter White is the danger! ‘Sherlock Holmes’ Sequel Is ‘More Sophisticated’

‘We all raised our game, creatively,’ director Guy Ritchie tells MTV News of ‘Game of Shadows.’ By Kara Warner Robert Downey Jr. in “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros If you’ve caught a trailer for the upcoming “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” which hits theaters Friday, you might have noticed that there is a lot going on. Holmes ( Robert Downey Jr. ) and Watson ( Jude Law ) have carried their bromance over from the 2009 original, with Holmes having issues with Watson’s pending marriage and his wily love interest Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams). Work-wise, the curiously successful Holmes and Watson duo now have to contend with a mysterious new female character (Noomi Rapace) and a formidable and familiar future supervillain, Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). When MTV News caught up with Downey and director Guy Ritchie, we asked them to explain what new excitement “Game of Shadows” offers that we didn’t see in the first film. “I think it’s a superior product, and I’m very tough on these sorts of things,” Downey said. “I think we return to one of the great original face-offs-with-a-supervillain stories in Arthur Conan Doyle’s lexicon, and I think that it’s a little bit more thoughtful. I think the female roles are much more central. It’s a more nicely balanced bit of entertainment.” Ritchie admitted that the success of the first film meant he had pleased audiences enough that he could make this movie for himself in a way, zeroing in on his sensibilities and what he likes in an action film. “We all raised our game, creatively. Rob and the rest of the team took it pretty seriously. We think we’re onto something here, and we don’t want to take it for granted,” Ritchie explained. “We try to give you a more sophisticated plot and more sophisticated action. All in all, we tried to basically put this film on ‘roids.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Review: Simply Stunning

Technically and stylistically, David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo should thrill fans of the Stieg Larsson book trilogy and newcomers alike. Simply put, the director’s dark vision and aesthetic brilliance make for a movie marvel. Casting, of course, plays a huge role in the film’s success, especially when the subject has already been tackled successfully by Swedish filmmakers with Noomi Rapace as the lead. In the U.S. version, Rooney Mara is scary good as Lisbeth Salander. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Trailer (Extended) Mara’s bravado is explosive and the actress deserves serious consideration for an Academy Award nomination. Throughout The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo , it is difficult to take one’s eyes off of Mara, no matter how much takes place around her. Daniel Craig is also outstanding as the co-protagonist, a journalist recently disgraced for libel. Early Report: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is so Awful, You’ll Pee Fire

I guess the new Nicolas Cage fire urination epic Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance did not soar like a blazing motorcycle across the night sky at Buttnumbathon recently. In fact, it tanked. There’s a flamin’ new poster for the film – one that would look impressive on a Hot Topic t-shirt or a bitchin’ Trapper Keeper – but we’ve got three definitely stanky tweets about the movie after the jump. We threw in a dollop of hope at the end, though.

‘Dragon Tattoo’ Reviews: How Did Rooney Mara Do?

Moviegoers won’t be able to take their eyes off the American actress’ Lisbeth Salander, critics rave. By Eric Ditzian Rooney Mara in “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” Photo: Columbia Pictures Rooney Mara owns “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” That is to say, while the film shows off David Fincher at his meticulous, moody best and Daniel Craig delivers yet another stellar performance, but the beating heart of the picture — or, if you will, the exposed pierced nipple — is Mara as the spiky-haired hacker, Lisbeth Salander. For all the shortcomings of “Dragon Tattoo”— and there are a bunch, from a pacing that sometimes drags to Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s deeply unsatisfying ending — you walk away unable to shake what you’ve just seen from Mara. Alternately vulnerable and vicious, her Salander is an entirely different creature from the one presented by Noomi Rapace in the Swedish version of the film and, what’s more, an entirely different creature from anything Mara offered in “The Social Network” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” Let’s stop right there, before we go from gushing to outright hero worship. At least we’re not alone. With the “Dragon Tattoo” review embargo officially lifted, critics have been celebrating Mara’s performance. The Transformation “Rooney Mara’s blazing, uncompromising performance is the film’s center, practically its reason to exist. … Eyebrows bleached blond, hair jet black and scowling constantly, Salander has deliberately modeled herself as the opposite of the feminine ideal, and though Mara digs into her humanity and even sensuality, she never lets down Salander’s guard for the sake of the audience sympathy.” — Katey Rich, Cinema Blend The Chemistry “Mara and Craig make an indomitable screen pair, he nominally leading their intense search into decades-old serial killings, she surging ahead, plowing through obstacles with flashes of phenomenal intellect and eruptions of physical fury.” — David Germain, The Associated Press The Sex Scenes “[It’s] Mara’s movie for the taking, and she snatches it up in dramatic fashion. … Fincher’s belief in her is borne out in a dominating performance of submerged rage, confidence and defiance. Baring all in the several sex scenes, both coerced and consensual, she goes all the way in a performance that compares favorably to that of Noomi Rapace in the Swedish version and its two sequels. She comes across here as the real deal.” — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter The Awards “Mara, I feel, gives Salander a sadder and more vulnerable aura and a more emotionally readable quality than what Noomi Rapace delivered in the Swedish trilogy. You might compare the two films down the road and say, “Nope, don’t see it…six of one, half-dozen of the other” but I know what I felt from Mara’s eyes, and there’s a lot going on inside her, I swear. Tremors and feints and glances and looks that say “stay away, I don’t want you near….wait, maybe I do.” There’s enough in this performance, I feel, for Mara to be counted among the year’s Best Actress nominees.” — Jeffrey Wells, Hollywood Elsewhere The Final Word “You can’t take your eyes off Rooney Mara as the notorious Lisbeth Salander.” — David Denby, The New Yorker Check out everything we’ve got on “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
