I’m sworn to secrecy regarding my recent previewing of Machine Gun Preacher , director Marc Forster’s forthcoming biopic about Sam Childers, a Pennsylvania junkie ex-con-turned-born-again-orphanage-building-gunslinging savior of Sudan. But there’s nothing that I or anybody else can say about the film that isn’t summed up in its new one-sheet featuring star and co-producer Gerard Butler, which is like whoaaa .

‘I didn’t know what I was doing,’ she says of first foray into acting. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna on the set of “Battleship” Photo: Splash News Rihanna certainly knows a thing or two about military couture; anyone who has seen her “Hard” video knows that. But in “Battleship,” her fatigues are anything but high-end. In a chat with UGO.com , the singer opens up about her butt-kicking role as Raikes, saying that her character knows nothing about the glamorous things in life, only the dangerous things. “It’s really cool, it’s easy. You don’t have to think about what you want to put on, or how cute you look,” she says of wearing the uniform in the Peter Berg-directed action flick. “She doesn’t like boys. She doesn’t like girls either. She’s just about her weapons and her work.” Rihanna has always had a tough-girl persona, so when it came time to make her film debut, she knew that this girl was the right one to play. And she made sure she did her research. “We worked with real military people, you know, people in the Navy, people who have fought in Iraq before. They pretty much came and drilled me. This one man, Donald, he pretty much drilled me, yelled at me, cursed me, ‘Ow!’ Made me do pushups. Everything,” she recalled. “Like, my best friend was there the second time we worked together, and I said to her, ‘OK, I’m about to do acting class, but you’re going to want to kill this man, so just stay in the bedroom. Don’t listen to anything he’s saying to me right now, just don’t kill him, Melissa, just stay in the bedroom.’ “And I remember she just kept walking around, and she would just glance at me, ‘Are you OK? Did he just say ‘f— you’ to you?’ But I mean, it really got you in the mentality, that’s the things they really go through, you know, when they first sign up,” she continued. “It’s not a walk in the park.” Her first encounter with Berg was equally jarring — Rihanna describes the sequence of events as “weird.” “And [Peter Berg] just walked out and said, ‘Hi, come in,’ and I’m like, ‘Where is Christa, my manager? Where is my manager?’ She wasn’t there, and I walked in and all I saw were these little alien mock-ups, these little dolls. And he just started saying, ‘Yeah, these are the thugs, he’s a thug,’ ” she said of the meeting. “I laughed and then I realized that he wasn’t laughing, and I was like, ‘This is weird. Why are there pictures of aliens all over this room?’ “And it was just crazy because he was just really super enthusiastic about it, and he was so sure that I could pull it off and I didn’t even know that he was the director of the film, I didn’t know anything,” she added. “I didn’t know what I was doing, where I was going, why.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Battleship.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘That’s definitely going to get done,’ Cash Money honcho Birdman confirms to XXLmag.com. By Rob Markman Drake and Lil Wayne Photo: Julia Beverly Move over Jay-Z and Kanye West , here come Lil Wayne and Drake . While Hov and Yeezy have pretty much dominated the hip-hop conversation this week with the release of their collaborative Watch the Throne, Cash Money CEO Bryan “Birdman” Williams took it up a notch when he confirmed on Friday (August 12) that Weezy and Drizzy Drake will also be joining forces on an upcoming project. “Wayne and I recently talked about [the Weezy/Drake collabo album],” Baby told XXLmag.com . “That’s definitely going to get done.” Birdman is himself no stranger to joint LPs: In 2006, the #1 Stunna shared billing with Wayne on their Like Father, Like Son album. Now, in 2011, the tag-team trend appears to be gaining even more traction. Eminem and Royce Da 5’9″ got together as Bad Meets Evil on their Hell: The Sequel EP in June. Of course, there’s Jay and ‘Ye’s Throne, which dropped this week, as did Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame’s Ferrari Boyz LP . Back in January, during a radio interview with the U.K.’s Tim Westwood, Drake spoke on his plans to work with Wayne on a joint project. “We still got to do that album,” he said. “I heard some other guys are coming out with an album too. There’s two other rappers that are coming out with an album together. … I don’t know where they got that idea but …” Hear why Royce Da 5’9″ thinks tag-team albums are good for the game. Baby drew a clear distinction, however, between the Throne’s sound and the sound that Drake and Weezy will be coming with. “It’s older versus younger,” he said. “I listened to a few songs [off Watch the Throne ], and it feels like an older feel to me. I think with Drake and Wayne, they young, they young cats. You got 23 and 28. Then you got Jay-Z and them, who are older and really on their way out the game. Then you got Wayne and Drake and them, who are still youthful to the game. So it’s two different types of music all the way across the board.” Baby did acknowledge the mark that Jay and Kanye have made on the music industry with their WTT release. “But what they’re doing is great. I think it’s great for the game, great for the business, great for retail as a whole,” he continued. “I just think when Wayne and Drake get together, [it’s] going to be something real special also because we more youthful.” With songs like “Successful,” “Miss Me” and “Right Above It” already under their belts, there is no doubt that Wayne and Drake have developed a chemistry, but as for when the duo would actually drop the project, Birdman couldn’t say. Wayne’s Tha Carter IV is due on August 29 and Drake’s sophomore work, Take Care, drops just two months later on October 24, so it may be some time. Is it as good as the show? Completely gratuitous? Worth the 3-D effects? Read what the critics have to say. By Kara Warner Chord Overstreet, Kevin McHale, Cory Monteith and Lea Michele in “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” Photo: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation For the “Glee”-obsessed out there counting down the days until the start of the hit TV show’s third season, your wait has been temporarily abated with the arrival of “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.” Here at MTV News, we’ve been celebrating the arrival of the 88-minute music-filled extravaganza with several fun moments with castmembers, including a “Glee”-style musical recap of the film and a hilarious list of superlatives . But now, with the movie finally out, it’s time to analyze the nuts and bolts of the film by way of critical mass — it’s currently posting a 61 percent “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Read on for the “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” reviews, pro/con style. The Setup “A blend of concert footage, interstitial fan segments and faux behind-the-scenes snippets (the actors remain in character), pic avoids going the ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’ route of documenting the cast members’ rise to stardom. Nor does it offer much in the way of surprises. Instead, the goal is largely to provide the ‘Glee’ Live! concert event for those who missed the recent tour, an immersive experience enhanced by fan testimonials about the series’ positive impact on their lives. As tempting as it is to label this approach over-calculated and self-congratulatory, it’s virtually impossible not to be swept up in the surge of ebullience and affection. As one fan attests, ‘ “Glee” is like medicine.’ Adds another, ‘It’s like the playlist of my life.’ — Lael Loewenstein, Variety “Even Gleeks who love to watch seasoned showbiz belters pretend to be high school kids on the hit TV series ‘Glee’ may wince at the cheesy marketing angle of ‘Glee the 3D Concert Movie.’ And I report this as a former geeky high school alto who is, if not a Gleek, at least ‘Glee’ friendly. … The positive power of a TV show to encourage tolerance and compassion among its viewers is a wonderful thing. But these ‘success stories’ tilt uncomfortably toward self-congratulation on the part of the producers; certainly they register as overkill for the intended audience, who presumably already know how awesome it is.” — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly The Performances “The concert stuff is a slightly knottier matter. The actors from the series perform in character, enacting the roles they play on the show onstage as they sing; Lea Michele’s goofily diva-esque Rachel belts out Streisand’s big ‘Funny Girl’ number ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’ as if Babs herself were out in the audience checking it out. … A Kurt/Rachel duet of ‘Get Happy’ and ‘Happy Days Are Here Again’ is an apt nod to Judy Garland and the originalist strain of glee-club singing and is kind of nifty. On the other hand, Finn’s ballad rendition of ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ is an equally apt reminder of the fact that just because something can be done doesn’t mean that it should, and the version of Queen’s cheekily crass ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ by Mark Salling’s studly Puck is both entirely beside the point and from hunger, as it were. — Glen Kinney, MSN Movies “Another of the movie’s strengths is the showcasing of cast members with dance training, like McHale, Heather Morris and Harry Shum Jr. The gifted Shum gets favored by the camera frequently during choreographer Zach Woodlee’s dance routines, while Morris — whose deadpan timing as ditzy cheerleader Brittany is a show standout — shines in her pumped-up version of Britney Spears’ ‘I’m a Slave 4 U.’ ” — Robert Abele, The Los Angeles Times The Final Word “For a film that was put together so rapidly, it doesn’t look at all shoddy (except for a couple of frames near the end shot from the giant screen instead of the stage). The 3D effect, however, is largely superfluous until the final credits, when the show’s trademark blue slushie heads straight for the viewer. On that note, you might leave ‘Glee 3D’ feeling a little gooey all over, but that slushie does taste kind of sweet.” — Loewenstein, Variety “The movie is entertaining and, admittedly, completely unnecessary. Yes, it works well enough in theaters. But it also would have worked just as well as a heavily promoted special television event broadcast over Thanksgiving weekend. … In the end, ‘Glee: The 3D Concert Movie’ is actually a perfect representation of ‘Glee’ the TV show: At its best, it’s joyful, uplifting and even, occasionally, moving. And at its worst, it’s a propaganda piece designed to win our undying loyalty to a TV show/cash cow that advocates for the little guy even though it’s clearly turned into a diva.” — Jen Chaney, The Washington Post Check out everything we’ve got on “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . From last year’s set visit to this year’s early screening, we’ve been following Jesse Eisenberg and Aziz Ansari’s comedy all the way. By Eric Ditzian Aziz Ansari and Jesse Eisenberg in “30 Minutes or Less” Photo: Wilson Webb/ Columbia Pictures Like a bomb indestructibly attached to an anxious pizza delivery boy’s chest, “30 Minutes or Less” hasn’t been able to shake MTV News off itself. From the early news updates (Jesse Eisenberg as that unfortunate pie-slinger, “Zombieland” helmer Ruben Fleischer in the director’s chair) to the exclusive first look at the Michigan set to an MTV Sneak Peek Week public screening of the action-comedy and beyond, we’ve been all over this movie. And now that it’s finally hit theaters, we’re not letting go quite yet. So slip on our “30 Minutes” cheat sheet for everything you need to know before heading to the multiplex this weekend. Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock The project began to come together in earnest in the spring of last year, when Fleischer signed on, followed by Aziz Ansari, Eisenberg (a “Zombieland” vet) , Danny McBride and Nick Swardson. In the film, McBride and Swardson play lowlife slackers who hatch a devious, deranged plan: hook Eisenberg’s delivery dude up like a suicide bomber and force him to rob a bank before the explosives go kablooey. Eisenberg, in turn, recruits his best friend, played by Ansari, to help out with the unfortunate activities. “They’re kind of simple dudes,” Swardson later explained to us . “They’re not very learned. But they’re not like robots. At the core, they are actually very nice people. They believe in friendship and things like that.” “They just want to be loved,” added McBride, “whether it takes a bomb or a bank robbery to get there.” Filming kicked off that summer in Grand Rapids, Michigan. MTV News was invited to check out the action in August, when the production settled into a dusty junkyard to shoot McBride and Swardson blowing up watermelons and kidnapping Eisenberg. Fun! But we had to keep the whole thing under wraps for months, until well after the F-bomb-laden, red-band trailer hit the Web this past spring. Light ‘Em Up! On set, all it seemed anyone could talk about was how bad a driver Eisenberg was . The future Oscar nominee didn’t seem to care. “I live in New York City and ride a bicycle, so I never drive ever, so I’ve been given the opportunity and a cool car,” he told MTV News. “Every time I drive, I get yelled at by the crew, but the stunt drivers always wink at me and say, ‘Nah, that was good, man. Keep doing it.’ I’ve been subtly and subversively encouraged to be very dangerous in the car.” In his defense, there is something dangerous and subversive about the whole movie, as further clips would make clear. In one exclusive MTV News debuted , Eisenberg, newly sporting a bomb on his chest, heads straight to the elementary school where Ansari teaches, because hey, where else would a bomb-carrying pizza boy go other than a school filled with young children? “Jesse, to his credit, is a great improviser,” Fleischer told us. “Both in ‘Zombieland’ and in this movie, he is responsible for so many funny lines, and he can kind of roll. I don’t think that’s his most comfortable gear, but when it’s pushed up, he can give back as good as anybody.” Added Ansari , “What was really fun about the movie, and Ruben did such a good job putting the cast together, we all kind of have different energies that play off well with one another.” Almost Out of Time Fans got an early look at those energies days before the MTV Movie Awards, when we staged a sneak-peek screening of the film. It was at the post-screening Q&A that we got to the bottom of the rumor that Taylor Lautner had shot a cameo in the film. “He’s in it!” Ansari joked, before admitting the truth. “I read that somewhere. I was like, ‘I didn’t know about that.’ … Let’s start that rumor. People like him, right? Just say he’s in the movie. ‘That Lautner cameo is dope, man! You gotta see that movie with Taylor Lautner!’ ” There are far more reasons than a “Twilight” star, though, to merit checking out the film in all its ridiculousness. Just peep some footage from the set, when McBride and Swardson blow those watermelons to smithereens . Those guys are, in the best buddy-comedy tradition, total freaking idiots. Their real-life counterparts kind of are too. “Just point to the bank,” Swardson said when we asked what it’d take for him to rob a bank. “Give me a good mask and a loaded weapon, I’m on,” McBride added. Director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves are ‘the right team’ to bring Stephen King’s novel to the screen, expert tells MTV News. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Wigler “Harry Potter” Director David Yates Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images Hot off the success of the “Harry Potter” franchise, director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves are teaming up again to adapt another major literary property: Stephen King’s “The Stand,” for Warner Bros. For the uninitiated, “The Stand” is a post-apocalyptic novel that follows a group of survivors after 99.4 percent of the human race is wiped out by the effects of a biological weapon. The remaining survivors break off into two camps, one based in Boulder, Colorado, which represents good, and the other in Las Vegas, which represents evil. The two camps eventually face off in a stand that determines the future of mankind. When it comes to bringing a beloved novel to the big screen, Yates and Kloves certainly seem like the go-to pair, but “The Stand” is a different beast than “Harry Potter” in many ways. For one, the adult-oriented material is much darker than “Potter.” Drew McWeeny of HitFix , who broke the news, told MTV News he thinks the way Yates and Kloves treated the darker aspects of the “Potter” movies is a mark in their favor as they gear up for the “Stand” collaboration. “I think they’ve demonstrated as a team that they are capable of making extreme darkness palatable and ably depicting the struggle between good and evil,” McWeeny said. “It might not have been the first team I thought of to adapt that book, but it’s a damn good team.” MTV Movies Blog editor and “The Stand” fan Josh Wigler doesn’t think the movie can be made with anything less than an R rating. Similarly, McWeeny said the film won’t be an easy project for Warner Bros. to move through the studio. When McWeeny first broke the story , he said it didn’t make sense to bring “The Stand” to the screen again if it didn’t expand upon the 1994 TV miniseries — and he offered that the new element should be the very disturbing material that made the novel a hit. The novel, which features a massive cast of characters, is divided into three “books,” and the assumption is that Yates and Kloves wouldn’t attempt to adapt the story into just one movie. The larger question is whether Warner Bros. would make two movies or a trilogy out of “The Stand.” McWeeny thinks it could go either way. “I’ve been hearing that three is the magic number, creatively, and they want a trilogy,” he said. “[But] two films may just make better economic sense for them. I do think there’s a way to pull it off in two films, but that’s when you really start cutting this to the bone and that may not be best for the story itself.” With Universal having passed on Ron Howard’s ambitious attempt to adapt another King classic, “The Dark Tower,” it seems fair to presume that Yates and Kloves may worry about making “The Stand” too big. But there are many elements of “The Stand” that make it more adaptable than “Dark Tower” ever was, McWeeny said. “Even though [‘The Stand’ is] very big and has a ton of characters, there is a much more linear storytelling shape, and a simple film trilogy is something that Hollywood understands,” he explained. “Coming off the final ‘Potter’ film, I think Yates and Kloves are the right team to get almost anything made.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Rise of the Planet of the Apes , the newest movie in the Planet of the Apes franchise, hits theaters worldwide this weekend. And although PETA loved it , there’s nothing for nudity lovers to go ape over in this skinless sci-fi flick. The original had Linda Harrison in that weird mud-and-leaves bikini at least- why no nudes in this installment? Probably because it’s supposed to be “serious” and have a “message” about mistreating animals. Pssssh. But there’s no need to be a sad monkey, because Mr. Skin’s got some fur-flying nudes that’ll really peel your banana: Bo Derek really woke the beast inside Mr. Skin with Tarzan the Ape Man (1981), where the incomparable Ms. Derek spends most of the film either completely nude or topless and covered with body paint. Just don’t ask him to do his Tarzan yell . That same year, Jenny Neumann starred in Mistress of the Apes (1981), about a sexy anthropologist who joins up with a lost tribe of ape-men for wild group sex and ape-baby breastfeeding scenes. We knew we should have changed majors sophomore year! It’s probably no co-skin-cidence that a mere year after the 2001 Planet of the Apes reboot, Jenny Wallace found herself mounting a silverback in Babes in Kongland (2002). Also in 2002, Darian Cane did what any reasonable softcore starlet would do if she found herself trapped in a cage with Misty Mundae – lez out, of course! And that’s just the beginning of the muff-munching delights of Play-Mate of the Apes (2002). And although it looks relatively tame today, in 1968, Noriela Noel ‘s full frontal skin shot in Night of the Bloody Apes was the absolute king gorilla of shock skinema. We’ve got even more sexy naked stars to peel your banana, so devolve with Mr. Skin and his database of ape clips now!
