‘Transformers: Dark Of The Moon’: Hunting For Easter Eggs

Hidden treasures in the threequel include new ‘bots and a not-so-new heroine. By Kara Warner Shia LaBeouf in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Jaimie Trueblood As is to be expected with Michael Bay movies, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” is jam-packed with a lot more than his patented brand of eye-popping action sequences. The movie is two hours and thirty-seven minutes, after all, so even with all the Autobot vs. Decepticon fighting action, there is plenty of room for an actual plot and, more importantly, a ton of fun Easter eggs for the most perceptive fans out there. In addition to all the “Star Trek” nods , Bay and company have cleverly inserted five “Transformers”-specific Easter eggs in the film. Thanks to the eagle eye of Splash Page editor Rick Marshall, along with his extensive “Transformers” knowledge, MTV News is proud to provide you with a few key things to look out for while watching “Dark of the Moon.” Not-So-New Girl Carly Played by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the character of Carly is new to Bay’s “Transformers” but has a meaty role as one of the humans in the “Transformers” cartoons. Carly is the wife of Spike Witwicky in the original animated series, the inspiration for Shia LaBeouf’s character Sam Witwicky. The Ark of the Moon The opening of “Dark of the Moon” is all about a mysterious ship that crash lands on the moon. Optimus Prime calls that ship “the Ark,” which is the name of the spaceship that first brought Optimus and the rest of the Transformers to Earth in the original cartoon. Spock’s Speaking-Part Past We mentioned the Nimoy connection in our “Trek” Easter eggs article, but his work is such a nerdy thrill, it gets another mention here. In “Dark of the Moon,” Nimoy is the voice of Sentinel Prime, which marks the second time he has lent his voice to a robot in the series. In the 1986 classic “Transformers: The Animated Movie,” Nimoy voiced Galvatron, Megatron’s equally mischievous successor. Bridges in Space We won’t go into details about how a space bridge may or may not be mentioned and/or used in “Dark of the Moon,” but throughout Transformers history onscreen and in comics, the space bridge allowed for travel between Earth and Cybertron. Old New Faces “Dark of the Moon” introduces us to a slew of new Autobots and Decepticons, although the die-hard “Transformers” fans out there will recognize the following from the cartoons. New-to-the-movie Autobots include: Wheeljack (has a strong Albert Einstein-like resemblance), Mirage (a red sports car) and Optimus Prime’s fancy silver trailer. Decepticon debuts include: fan-favorite master of destruction Shockwave and bird-like Lazerbeak, who transforms into a variety of objects, save for the excellent cassette-tape shape of his cartoon counterpart. ‘Transformers’ Stars Reveal Tricks Behind Filming Building-Escape Scene

‘We all felt 12 again, sliding down the side of this building, shooting, screaming,’ Tyrese Gibson tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Shia LaBeouf in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Jaimie Trueblood For those who’ve seen ” Transformers: Dark of the Moon ,” there is so much going on in the film that one could spend the next 12 months breaking down all the dirty details. We’ve already tackled the nods to “Star Trek” and the “Transformers”-specific Easter eggs , so today we turn our attention to one of the film’s most impressive action sequences: the part when evil Decepticon Shockwave sends his massive, spinning, snakelike destroyer after our protagonists, who become trapped in the upper stories of a tall building. The Transformer proceeds to cut the building in half, leaving our heroes no option but to jump out of the windows and slide down the outside of the building to safety. MTV News had the scene’s stars, Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Tyrese Gibson explain how they managed to pull off that sequence. “The building comes up on what I can only describe as a crane,” Whiteley explained of the rig used to support and move the specific set piece. “It tilts to about a 40-degree angle. It’s built to look like the outside of a skyscraper,” she said. “Shia, myself, Tyrese, the Marines, we all set at the top, Mike [director Michael Bay] would scream ‘Action!’ and then we would slide down this thing,” she recalled. “And then flower pots, chairs, paper and fake glass, tennis balls, every office supply you could possibly think of would get thrown down after us.” Despite the gravity of that particular scene, it turns out that the boys thought of the tilting skyscraper set piece more like a ride at a county fair. “This thing had to be 150 to 200 feet in the air. It was like a huge slide,” Gibson said. “We all felt 12 again, sliding down the side of this building, shooting, screaming, doing everything we had to do in those scenes.” “It was scary stuff,” he added with a smile. “It was scary with the idea that we are about to be eaten, eaten alive.” “We shot that for three weeks or so,” LaBeouf said. “You’re basically pulling yourself on rope to get to the top of the thing. It’s like a big slide, you know those slides they have at fairs where you get the little brown bag? Brown bag slides, sort of like that.” Whiteley added that in the midst of all the fun had while sliding, she learned very quickly to pay attention to her landing and get out of the way when she reached the bottom of the set piece. “I’d always hit the bottom first. It took one time to realize if I didn’t get out of the way really quick, I was going to get flattened by a 300-pound man coming quite quickly after me!” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Oh, Canada: Great Pairs from the Great White North [PICS]

This weekend we commemorate America’s 235th birthday on July 4, 2011, but first let’s take a moment to say “spanks” to our brothers and sisters to the North who are celebrating Canada Day today. We say “spanks” because Canada has produced some of the finest nude act-chestsses ever to bare their twin peaks on screen, like Playboy record-holder Pamela Anderson and fellow bunny babe Shannon Tweed , as well as dairylicious Debbie Rochon and the huge all-natural hooters of Deborah Kara Unger. You’ll be saying “Oh, Canada!” with these busty babes, plus Jessica Pare , Christina Cox , and Natasha Henstridge nude after the jump!

Liv Tyler: Bound and Gagged and Loving It in The Ledge

We’ve already skinjoyed a sneak peek at Liv Tyler ‘s lovely lactoids in the upcoming film The Ledge , and the newest news from the set is that things got a little kinky for the raven-haired star…and she was totally cool with it. In the film, Liv’s religious-nut husband goes just plain ol’ nuts when he finds out about her affair with a hunky neighbor. In a psychotic, jealous rage, he grabs Liv, ties her to a chair, and stuffs a ball gag in her mouth. Apparently filming this scene took quite a bit longer than Ms. Tyler was expecting, leading her to a skinteresting conclusion: I was really crying with rage and anger because I wanted to kill [director] Matthew Chapman . I’d been there all day in this chair with this gag in my mouth and really tied to the chair for [co-star Patrick Wilson ]. That said, I kind of liked it. Is that weird? Not in a sexual way! Obviously when you’re acting the more real something can be and the more in the moment you can be, the better. It’s OK, Liv. You can say it’s for your “craft” all you want, but we know you’re really a superfreak, and frankly, we’re pretty into it. Just call us the next time you want to “rehearse.” Check out more from ravishing rockstar spawn Liv Tyler right here at MrSkin.com!

Director of Sarah Palin Documentary Promises More Violence in Unrated Cut

You read that right: Stephen Bannon, whose Sarah Palin documentary The Undefeated has drawn critical ire across the aisles , says an uncut version of his film will be released on demand following its PG-13 theatrical release July 15. The new cut will depict even more of the dastardly violence and vulgarity the former Alaska governor/vice presidential candidate has suffered during her rise in the public eye, including “crucifixions, lynching and suicides” sourced from social media. Pulling a classic double dip! Looks like Hollywood and its hateful methods aren’t all despicable, eh?[ THR ]

‘Transformers’: Can Series Go On Without LaBeouf And Bay?

‘If they’re going to do it again, they have to attempt it with somebody else,’ LaBeouf told MTV News By Josh Wigler Optimus Prime in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount Ask the stars, ask the critics, ask your friends: It looks like the universal consensus is that “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” is the very best of the bunch. But it also might be the very last of the bunch, at least for director Michael Bay and leading man Shia LaBeouf, who have both announced their intentions to depart the series following this latest battle between the Autobots and Decepticons. “If they’re going to do it again, they have to attempt it with somebody else,” LaBeouf told MTV News at the New York City premiere of “Dark of the Moon” on Tuesday night, reaffirming his plans to leave Sam Witwicky right where he is. “We took it to the limit. We tried as hard as we could. I don’t think we can turn in a movie that’s better than this, really.” The question has been raised before: Can “Transformers” continue without Bay and Shia? From producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura’s perspective, it would certainly be tricky. “You can’t replace them. You’d have to go about doing it another way, that’s what you’d do,” he said. “Another way” is exactly the idea Shia had in mind for how to continue moving the multimedia franchise forward without him and Bay at the helm. “If you want to keep making more ‘Transformers’ movies, you need another anchor,” he explained. “It’s different than, like, ‘Indiana Jones.’ Harrison Ford has an age. He’s human. Optimus Prime is going to be Optimus Prime forever. He’s never going to grow older. So you just need another human anchor. I think you just need to find it. There’s tons of great actors.” But Shia says he won’t be that anchor anymore. “I think I’ve taken Sam as far as I can, creatively,” he said. “We set out to make a certain thing. We wanted to make the best movie we could, and we had three shots at it. On the third one, we did it. I don’t think that either one of us wants to return to it and attempt it when it was this good.” That’s LaBeouf’s perspective, at least, but what does Bay think? When we caught up with him on the red carpet, the Master of Bayhem reflected on not just what the series has meant to him, but what it’s meant for fans across the globe. “I gotta tell ya. It’s been a touching moment for me. It’s bittersweet for me, having done this franchise for six years,” said Bay. “Today we got an urgent call from Make-a-Wish . They said, ‘There’s a little boy in Texas. He’s got two days. He wants to see ‘Transformers 3.’ So we made a special print. We’re flying [the copy] to his hospital room right now in Texas so he can see it. That’s the power of these movies. That touches your core, you know?” Still, for the moment, Bay is busy enough “birthing this one now. The movie’s coming out tonight. Let’s just enjoy this one!” It certainly seems as though the fans are following those orders, as are the film’s castmembers. In fact, it’s one actor in particular who feels the most confident that Bay and LaBeouf aren’t done with “Transformers.” “Let me tell you, I’m going to see what I can do. Leave it with me,” grinned Rosie Huntington-Whiteley . “The boys listen to me. I’ve got it under control, people — don’t worry. Who knows [if there’ll be a fourth film], but you can never say never.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Transformers: Dark Of The Moon’: Behind The ‘Star Trek’ Nods

Director Michael Bay explains threequel’s many references to ‘Trek,’ including Leonard Nimoy’s voice work. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Bumblebee in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount Sometimes Easter Eggs in movies — an intentional in-joke, reference or hidden message — are hard to spot, very blink-and-you-miss-it, and thus require repeat viewings to pick up on. Not so with “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” however. Even the most casual filmgoer should pick up on at least one of the many “Star Trek” references in the film. When MTV News caught up with director Michael Bay, we asked him to address the “Trek” connections, beginning with his enlistment of beloved actor Leonard Nimoy, a.k.a. Spock, to voice the role of Sentinel Prime. “He’s actually related to me. He married Susan Bay [the director’s cousin],” Bay said. “I was scared to ask him to voice. I saw him at Thanksgiving, and my mom was like, ‘Ask him! Ask him!’ I’m like, ‘No, Mom, no!’ ” As difficult as it is to imagine Bay being afraid of anything, he eventually got over his Nimoy anxiety. Bonus factoid for the non-Transformer geeks: Nimoy also lent his vocal talents to the 1986 animated film, as the voice of Galvatron. Speaking to other “Trek” references, Bay said he didn’t have anything to do with them; they all came from the film’s screenwriter. “That was my writer, Ehren Kruger,” Bay said. “[He] is a ‘Star Trek’ geek, so that wasn’t my thing.” So how many references did you count? Here are the three we spotted ( minor spoilers ahead ): 1. When Sam (Shia LaBeouf) meets girlfriend Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) at work and is introduced to her boss, Dylan Gould (Patrick Dempsey), he marvels at their workplace: “It’s a beautiful building you guys have. Like the Starship Enterprise in here.” 2. Refugee robots Brains and Wheelie, who are hiding out in Carly and Sam’s apartment, watch an episode of “Trek,” during which one of them says, “Hey, I like this episode. It’s the one where Spock turns evil” — which also provides for a nice bit of tongue-in-cheek foreshadowing. 3. At one point, Sentinel Prime defends certain motivations with a fun little reverse quote of Spock’s wise words to Captain Kirk in “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.” “Dark of the Moon” quote: “The needs of the few outweigh the needs of the many.” Original: “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” What did we miss? 80’s Scream Queens Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer Need YOU

They brought us unspeakable nude joy throughout the 80’s as they sliced, diced, stripped, screamed, ran for their lives, and oh yeah, danced with chainsaws, and now big-haired 80’s horror icons Linnea Quigley ( Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers , Return of the Living Dead ), Michelle Bauer ( Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl O-Rama , Rollerblade ), and Brinke Steven s ( Nightmare Sisters , Teenage Exorcist ) are asking fans to give back. With the help of Milwaukee-based filmmaker Jason Paul Collum , this unholy trinity of 80’s camp horror is dishing the dirt on their sexperiences as scream queens in the new, nude documentary Screaming in High Heels: Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era . The interviews are in the can and the film is nearly complete, but in order for Screaming in High Heels to be completed, it needs funds for post-production finishing and marketing. That means moolah, people. Cheese. Cash. Clams. Instead of begging cigar-chomping studio execs for the money, Collum and the girls are taking their plea directly to the fans by starting a kickstarter account where fans can chip in to raise the measly (in movie terms) $4,000 needed to bring this funbag-filled film to life. There’s a wide variety of skincentives for fans to donate, including the opportunity to meet n’ greet with Linnea at the film’s premiere, so check out the kickstarter page NOW and give back to the horror hotties you’ve loved all these years! The campaign ends July 6, so go NOW!
