‘Sucker Punch’ Stars Take A Journey ‘Into Zack Snyder’s Mind’

Vanessa Hudgens, Jena Malone, Emily Browning, Jamie Chung and Abbie Cornish reveal their favorite scenes. By Kara Warner Vanessa Hudgens in “Sucker Punch” Photo: Warner Bros. After months and months of buzz, rumors and hype, Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch” is finally about to drop in theaters. MTV News has been on this film’s case from day one and recently had the opportunity to catch up with the cast and director for a few in-depth chats. First up, the lovely leading ladies addressed the film’s most outrageous moments. “I think, for me, when we’re on the B-25 bomber plane and we’re being chased by a dragon and I’m shooting at it,” said Vanessa Hudgens, who plays Blondie. “It’s pretty intense.” “I got to do this really fun green-screen moment where I was being lowered upside down on a harness 40 feet in the air,” Jena Malone, a.k.a. Rocked in the film, explained. “I had to clear out my mag on my UMP [Universal Machine Pistol] while I was shooting all these robots that I was doing a double-flip over in the middle of a bullet train.” Jamie Chung, who plays Amber, added that part of the fun of working with green screen, particularly a scene in Mecca, was being able to use your imagination. When asked what she pulled from or where she went to prepare for those moments, Chung said she looked to her director. “Into Zack Snyder’s mind,” she said. “That was the place that I went.” Emily Browning (Baby Doll) and Abbie Cornish (Sweet Pea) also touted the fight or “dance” sequences as the most unbelievable. “My favorite thing to watch with my character is probably the first fight scene in Samurai world,” Browning said. “People have said to me, ‘Oh, so were you just standing there and there was a green screen and they made you look like you were jumping?’ I said, ‘No, I was on wires the whole time’ jumping up and doing crazy things. We did almost a month of wirework at the end of the film. That’s pretty cool to see. It’s almost like a character in a video game or something.” “I definitely do love a lot of the fighting stuff,” Cornish said. “For me the process of filming ‘World War I’ [an action sequence in the film] was incredible, because we all had solo action pieces so we got to indulge in those action pieces.” Cornish pointed out Snyder’s use of high-speed cameras that were used to slow certain movements and make them stand out more onscreen. “I love the moments where you see Vanessa’s character flip her tomahawk and then that awesome throw that she does,” she said. “And when Jenna flips her gun in slow motion, I love that stuff.” “That’s probably the coolest moment,” Browning agreed. Whoopi Goldberg Admits To Being Stoned During Oscar Acceptance Speech [VIDEO]

When Whoopi Goldberg won her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for ‘Ghost’ back in 1991, she was high as a kite, according to TMZ . Whoopi dropped the bombshell during a voice-over recording session for the film ‘The Pagemaster’ in 1992, yet the footage hasn’t been seen by the public until now! In the clip, Whoopi says that smoking, both cigarettes and weed, is a life habit and she admits to having smoked a “wonderful joint” to help calm her nerves before the ceremony, and was so high during the award show, she had to mentally coach herself into getting up on stage to make her acceptance speech! Whoopi has a pretty relaxed attitude to the whole thing though, laughing as she recalls getting busted by her mother, who called her after the ceremony and could tell she smoked up because of her “glistening eyes.” But when Whoopi realizes that she is being filmed she also notes, “Just because I do it doesn’t mean you should do it.” Check out the clip below…. ‘Sucker Punch’ Stars Hope Action Flick ‘Hits You In The Gut’

Vanessa Hudgens teases MTV News at the film’s premiere, ‘Sucker punch means you don’t know what’s coming.’ By Kara Warner Emily Browning, Jamie Chung and Vanessa Hudgens at the L.A. premiere of “Sucker Punch” Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images For those who’ve seen the trailers, TV spots and highly stylized posters, you’re likely aware that “Sucker Punch” descends upon theaters on Friday. Zack Snyder’s estrogen-fueled flick has been billed as a curious, complex, action-adventure-fantasy, but despite the promotional push, it’s safe to say that plenty of people are still scratching their heads, wondering, “What the heck is ‘Sucker Punch’?” MTV News headed out to the film’s star-studded, slightly rain-soaked premiere in Hollywood on Wednesday night to find out. “Sucker punch means you don’t know what’s coming,” Vanessa Hudgens said simply. “It’s being knocked out by something unexpected,” co-star Jena Malone added. “Sucker punch is this idea of taking an unexpected blow,” Abbie Cornish said, adding in a brief plot summary to her definition as well. “A lot of the girls are totally unprepared for what’s about to happen to them. They’ve been living in this institution and Baby Doll [played by Emily Browning] comes along and changes their whole perception of freedom, of hope, of escapism,” she explained. “And so their ways of life are challenged, they’re sucker-punched with this whole idea of freedom.” Director Zack Snyder, who created the story along with co-writer Steve Shibuya, continued with the “expect the unexpected” theme. “I think it means two things: If you have preconceived ideas about what these girls are capable of, you’re going to get a sucker punch,” he said. “And also too, there’s actually a thing in the movie, a physical thing that supplies the sucker punch as well.” Carla Gugino said the title of the film and the idea itself are fun because there’s a lot left up to interpretation or theories. She also echoed the sentiments of her co-stars. “To me, a sucker punch is one of those things you least expect, that you’re unprepared for, but that hits you in the gut,” she said. “And I think that hopefully this movie is, and this movie embodies that.” Are you planning to go see “Sucker Punch”? ‘Hunger Games’ Experts Weigh In: Who Should Play Peeta?

Josh Hutcherson, Alex Pettyfer and Hunter Parrish appear to be the front-runners, but nothing is confirmed yet. By Christina Garibaldi Alex Pettyfer Photo: Getty Images Last week, MTV News exclusively revealed that Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence landed the highly coveted role of Katniss Everdeen in the film adaptation of “The Hunger Games.” Experts and fans were mixed on the thought of the tall, blond 20-year-old taking on the role of the 16-year-old, dark-haired heroine, but it seems like Jennifer can rest easy for now, since the debate has shifted to who will play fellow Hunger Games competitor Peeta. “It’s definitely going to be someone close to her age,” Down With the Capitol administrator Theresa Morgan told MTV News. “I think it will make it easier to cast someone for Peeta.” Many names have already been thrown into the mix, including “The Kids Are All Right” star Josh Hutcherson , who confessed he has met with director Gary Ross. “I love Peeta,” Hutcherson told Entertainment Weekly. “The character is so much who I am — self-deprecating, a people person. And he’d be such a great character to play!” Hutcherson seems to be a front-runner for the District 12 male tribute, but he will have some stiff competition from Alex Pettyfer and fan favorite Hunter Parrish . “We love Josh Hutcherson,” the Hob administrator Megan Scott said. “There’s Alex, who I really like, but Hunter is a huge fan favorite. When I think of these guys with Jennifer, they all go well together.” “Our whole site thinks Hunter will be perfect,” Morgan said. “He looks the role and acts the role. A lot of people are thinking he sounds like Peeta.” Ross might agree, since Parrish recently told E! Online he has met with the movie’s producers. “I’d be grateful to get the opportunity,” he said. “Like, really grateful. It would be amazing.” Not everyone’s convinced that these leading contenders are right for the coveted “Hunger Games” role. “My favorite for Peeta is Callan McAuliffe,” Mockingjay.net administrator Kimmy West said about the “I Am Number Four” newcomer. “I think he has the acting chops, he’s relatively unknown, and he has that warm quality that Peeta has.” Who do you think should get the role of Peeta in “The Hunger Games”? A Tribe Called Quest ‘Encourage’ Fans To See ‘Beats, Rhymes & Life’

‘It’s a celebration not only of Tribe, but of the culture,’ Q-Tip tells MTV News, despite his disapproval of some aspects of the documentary. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip Photo: MTV News Although A Tribe Called Quest felt some of the business behind Michael Rapaport’s documentary on the group was Industry Rule #4080 (read: shady), they still want fans to go see the film. “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest” is a window into not only the career of one of hip-hop’s most influential acts, they said, but also the culture itself. “I encourage everybody still to see this film,” Q-Tip told MTV News. “Not only because it’s about us, but it’s really about the hip-hop movement, man. It really, really is, that’s on everything. It’s a celebration not only of Tribe, but of the culture. Of what goes into making records: the ups, the downs, the switching of the times. It’s a beautiful story about hip-hop. He really did a great job, and I commend him for it, still. He really did an amazing job.” According to Q-Tip, he and Tribe just want to get the story totally correct. “Again, this is just another warning shot … a flare coming from the cannon so that they can get this thing right,” Q-Tip said. The MC also expressed the necessity for seminal rap artists and groups to tell their stories on their own terms. “Everybody out there in hip-hop who’s crossed that threshold, who’s done work, who has a history — whether it be Queen Latifah or Rakim or Wu-Tang or Jay-Z or Nas or Ice Cube or N.W.A — yo, tell y’all own stories,” Q-Tip said, looking into the camera for emphasis. “Be in charge of your own stories, you hear me?” The Queens MC then likened rappers to griots : West African storytellers who share their tales via oral tradition. “We gotta pass our own stories on,” Q-Tip continued. “This is part of our tradition as African-Americans predominantly. Let’s tell our own stories. We can let everybody come in and participate with us in this, but don’t fall for the Hollywood, nobody’s ever done this before. We hip-hop, man. This is a hip-hop nation. We crack the mold, we break the rules. We define this culture that we in right now, this Western culture, the sh– that’s moving around the world, whether it be Tribe to Lil Wayne, Drake to Kanye, I don’t care. Did the Foo Fighters Slam Glee Just to Get Press For Their New Documentary?

Say you’re a band with a project to promote. The easiest way to get some quick media attention is by picking a fight with a hugely popular entertainment entity (or Charlie Sheen), since the press is desperate for any new story involving said entity. With that understanding then, is it merely coincidental that the Foo Fighters decided to start trashing Glee just in time for the premiere of their documentary, Foo Fighters: Back and Forth ?

It Might Be Harder to Erase China From Red Dawn Than You Thought

Earlier this week it was reported that the filmmakers behind Red Dawn were going to replace mentions of China with North Korea, in an effort to make the long-shelved remake more sellable to the “Asian superpower.” It turns out that might be difficult. In a spoiler-heavy review, the website Libertas reveals that the crux of the film deals with China invading America to “collect” on the debt owed by years of borrowing. Kinda hard to imagine North Korea having the same aspirations, isn’t it? [ Libertas via The Playlist ]

‘Paul’: Five Secrets Revealed

Among the little-known details about the sci-fi comedy, director Greg Mottola tells MTV News Steven Spielberg lined up his own cameo. By Eric Ditzian Nick Frost and Simon Pegg in “Paul” Photo: Universal Pictures The origin story of “Paul,” Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s new sci-fi comedy about two English guys who encounter a goofy alien in the American Southwest, began on the soggy U.K. set of “Shaun of the Dead” in 2003. The crew had lost so many days because of rain that they started wondering how great it would be to shoot in a location where it never, ever, ever rained. “We just spit-balled from there,” Frost told MTV News recently. “No rain became the desert, the desert became Area 51 and then it was a short step to thinking about these two guys encountering an alien.”
