The opening scene of Sean Durkin’s debut feature Martha Marcy May Marlene suggests we’re in for a big rusty bread pan’s worth of rural miserablism, and even though we’re not, the yeasty grayness of those early moments is clearly intentional: A group of women in drab dresses and droopy T-shirts go about preparing dinner in a house whose unfinished interior looks either new and hastily erected or ancient and about to fall apart — it’s hard to tell which. A young boy stomps about in a dusty, scrubby yard; a woman sits on the porch working on a crocheted afghan. When dinner’s ready, a bunch of men sit down to eat; then they leave the table — the man who appears to be the leader murmurs something appreciative about the meal — and the women take their places. Then there’s one lone shot of a ton of dirty dishes jumbled into and around the kitchen sink — there’s no question who’s going to be scouring them clean. It’s as if Amishtown had been taken over by a nicer version of the Manson family.

Earlier this week it was reported that the filmmakers behind Red Dawn were going to replace mentions of China with North Korea, in an effort to make the long-shelved remake more sellable to the “Asian superpower.” It turns out that might be difficult. In a spoiler-heavy review, the website Libertas reveals that the crux of the film deals with China invading America to “collect” on the debt owed by years of borrowing. Looks like the final nail has been put in Four Loko’s coffin. It will be hard to find Four Loko and other banned caffeinated alcoholic drinks for sale on Craigslist anymore, state Sen. Jeff Klein said. The popular online trading post pulled the few remaining ads for such beverages, according to a letter it sent to the senator dated Jan. 11, responding to his request. “I applaud craigslist for doing the right thing,” said Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester). “Their decision to remove ads for these dangerous drinks goes a long way in helping save our teens from potentially devastating consequences to their health and their lives.” There were seven ads for Four Loko pulled nationwide, including two in New York State, the website told Klein. Craigslist also searched for ads for other caffeinated alcoholic beverages, such as Moonshot, Joose and Core High Gravity, but did not find any among its millions of pages, the website said. We at Bossip have never had a sip of the drink that has all these kids going ham, but we’re down for it’s removal from stores if it’s gonna have people dying.
