‘Hangover Part II’ Trailer Drops Next Week, Todd Phillips Says

‘It’s truly a teaser, so it might end up frustrating more than solving questions,’ director tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms in “The Hangover” Photo: Warner Bros. After the record-breaking success of “The Hangover” and the endless speculation about where the sequel would take place, after the casting gossip and the Mel Gibson controversy , after the first photos and the behind-the-scenes set visit, we’re about to get our first peek at actual footage from “The Hangover Part II.” “We have a teaser trailer that I just finished color for yesterday night, so that’ll come out next week,” Todd Phillips told MTV News on Friday (February 18) while promoting the DVD release of “Due Date.” “And I think it comes out in theaters on ‘Hall Pass,’ which should be next Friday.” It can’t come soon enough. The film hits theaters May 26, and up until now, official glimpses at the production have been few and far between. The only reason for the dearth of Warner Bros.-sanctioned material, though, is that Phillips and friends didn’t wrap production on the flick that long ago. “We’ve had, like, one photo out, and that’s just because we finished shooting on New Year’s Day, and the movie comes out on Memorial Day,” the writer/director said. “It’s really just a crazy-tight schedule.” While Phillips wouldn’t dish details about what we’ll actually see in the teaser, he did emphasize that fans should temper their expectations: The footage will hardly offer a comprehensive dive into what the film is all about. “It’s truly a teaser, so it might end up frustrating more than solving questions,” he told us. “I love it. It’s a true tease, if that makes sense. It’s just one of those things that’s gonna make you go, ‘OK, let’s see what more they have.’ It’s to pique interest and to remind people what’s coming down the pike.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Liam Neeson’s ‘Unknown’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics give high marks to Neeson, but are divided on neo-Hitchcockian thriller. By Shawn Adler January Jones and Liam Neeson in “Unknown” Photo: Warner Bros. With apologies to the groundhog, Liam Neeson is quickly becoming February’s biggest star. Two years after the action-thriller “Taken” made him perhaps Hollywood’s unlikeliest action star, the Oscar-nominated man who played Oskar Schindler is back to kick butt and take names in “Unknown,” a neo-Hitchcockian thriller about a man who awakens after a car accident to discover the life he thought he had has been taken away, possibly just an after-effect of amnesia. Is the movie itself worth forgetting? Here’s what the critics are saying: The Twist “As much as ‘Unknown’ tries to be an intelligent thriller for grown-ups, the premise is pretty silly and normally, when that’s the case, you know it’s going to lead to an equally silly twist. Dark Castle regular Jaume Collet-Serra’s previous movie ‘Orphan’ had one of the funniest twist endings possibly ever, though this doesn’t quite achieve that extreme of insanity because the plot is so based in thriller clich

Tupac Shakur Biopic Is Back On Track

Movie was caught up in lawsuits between producers and Tupac’s mom, Afeni Shakur. By Jayson Rodriguez Tupac Shakur Photo: Ron Galella/ WireImage Filming for the much-ballyhooed Tupac Shakur biopic can finally begin. The producers of the movie and the late rapper’s mother have reached a settlement over their creative differences that will allow the production to begin, according to Reuters. For two years, Afeni Shakur and Morgan Creek Productions have been tangled in litigation as each side accused the other of sabotaging the project. In 2009, Morgan Creek filed a lawsuit against Shakur claiming she agreed to terms with the company but was using the terms “as a floor to pursue further negotiations” with other parties. Shakur countersued, alleging producers were interfering with negotiations as she and Morgan Creek had not reached final terms. Prior to reaching a settlement, sources said Shakur met with the project’s director, Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”), and he assured the rapper’s mother — who oversees the Tupac Shakur estate — his vision aligns with hers. Reportedly, as a part of the settlement Afeni Shakur will receive an executive-producer credit, a share of the film’s profits and a flat fee for agreeing to the deal. Casting for the lead role is set to begin immediately. As was the case with “Notorious,” the biopic of Shakur friend-turned-rival Notorious B.I.G., Fuqua will hold a national call for actors to play the fiery rapper. Last year, the director said in an interview that he felt an unknown actor should take on the role. “That’s the goal, I want to discover someone new,” Fuqua explained. “I want to discover a lot of new people if I can. Obviously I’m going to have to put some people in it that you know, just because actors have different skills. I want to go to the streets and find him anywhere he might be in the world.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Former Jay-Z Associate Tru Life Offered Plea Deal In Murder Case

Rapper and his brother considering deal related to 2009 incident. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rebecca Thomas Tru Life (file) Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Former Jay-Z associate and rapper Tru Life was offered a plea deal of 10 years in prison by Manhattan prosecutors on Wednesday in connection with a 2009 incident in which a 20-year-old man was fatally stabbed to death. Tru Life, born Robert Rosado, was once signed to Jay-Z’s Roc La Familia imprint. He and his brother Marcus Rosado were slapped with second-degree murder, gang assault and assault charges after the alleged altercation on June 15, 2009, that investigators said initially began with a dispute outside New York nightclub Pacha. The deal would reduce the severity of the original charges and require the rapper and his brother, who was offered a 12-year deal, to waive their right to appeal. According to Tru Life’s attorney, Alan M. Abramson, the rapper has yet to formally agree to the plea deal. In an e-mail message to MTV News, Abramson wrote, “The offer is being reviewed and no decisions have been made at this time.” Court documents reveal the victim, Christopher Guerrero, died as a result of the alleged stabbing. A second man who was allegedly involved in the scuffle was hospitalized for stab wounds. Tru Life, from Manhattan’s Lower East Side neighborhood, is best known in the hip-hop world for his beef with Queens rap duo Mobb Deep over a failed collaboration. The Puerto Rican lyricist was later a cornerstone of Jay-Z’s then-burgeoning Latin-orientated Roc La Familia, along with Texas rapper Aztec. Tru Life never released an album on the label.

Arcade Fire And Spike Jonze Debut ‘Scenes From The Suburbs’ In Berlin

30-minute film premiered at Berlin Film Festival this week. By Eric Ditzian The Arcade Fire’s Win Butler Photo: Mark Metcalfe/ Getty Images Arcade Fire has showed off snippets of their Spike Jonze-directed short film, “Scenes from the Suburbs,” on oversize screens during their summer tour shows and in a five-minute music video in November. Finally, this week, the band got to display the full 30-minute film at the Berlin Film Festival, which frontman Win Butler hopes will become part of the group’s “visual legacy,” according to The Hollywood Reporter . “So that 30 years from now, when a computer virus crashed all the computers, and people have to look at DVDs to see what life was like in the early 2000s, there is some record of what we were thinking visually,” he explained at the festival. “And we didn’t want that to get completely lost just because of the times that we live in.” The short continues the band’s exploration of their experiences growing up within the often staid confines of the suburbs, which, as their tour collaborator Terry Gilliam has told us, is a “place that if you’re creative, you just need to get away from.” The film, however, spins suburban life into an impressionistic portrait of a group of teens living in an alternate reality where different towns go to war against one another. “You start from a feeling and it’s not necessarily the plot points of a song,” Butler said. “To me the film is very much about trying to talk about the relationships and the feelings of that age.” “We were trying to show the emotion and the emotional links without necessarily getting deep into the plot,” he added, citing influences ranging from Gilliam’s films to B movies. “It’s inspired by watching the first half of films and not having to figure out how to resolve them.” The Berlin premiere capped off a pretty stellar week for Arcade Fire. On Sunday, the band pulled off a shocking Album of the Year upset at the Grammys , then quickly jetted to London for the Brit Awards, winning Best International Album and Best International Group . And yet, for all this musical success, Butler suggested that perhaps a visual medium is where the group’s true artistic talents lie. “I think we would have been a band of moviemakers if making movies wasn’t 140 times more expensive than making records,” he said. Cynthia Steffe Brings Animal Prints, Furs To New York Fashion Week

Designer Shaun Kearney calls collection ‘a modern, wearable approach to something quite opulent.’ By Nuzhat Naoreen, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Cynthia Steffe’s New York fashion week show Photo: Getty Images Fur coats, embroidered belts and sleek hair will be all the rage this fall — if Cynthia Steffe’s New York fashion week show is any indication. A favorite of stars including Anne Hathaway, Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Simpson, the designer featured a collection with an array of sophisticated looks ideal for a day at the office or a night on the town. “With this collection, I wanted to do something which was a modern, wearable approach to something quite opulent,” designer Shaun Kearney told MTV News, adding that many of the silhouettes were inspired by menswear. Kearney’s collection included oversized tops paired with trousers and thin belts, as well as formal dresses matched with colored leggings. Fur also dominated the show, as models paraded down the runway in a variety of fur neck wraps — instead of the more traditional scarf — and eye-catching coats. “I was inspired a lot by mixing a lot of luscious, different textures, mixed in with exotic animal prints,” Kearney said. Kearney opted for simple yet sleek hair to accompany each of the looks. “The hair today is much more polished than normal, but at the same time it’s relaxed,” he said. Celebrity stylist Tyler Laswell said he wanted to keep the hair understated. “We didn’t want to do too much with the hair,” Laswell said. “We didn’t want it to look overly done and old; we just wanted it to look young and fresh.” Related Videos Behind The Scenes At 2011 Fall Fashion Week Related Photos 2011 Fall Fashion Week: Cynthia Steffe Celebs At 2011 New York Spring Fashion Week

‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’ Director’s Cut Could Hit Theaters Soon

Jon M. Chu said to be working on version with new footage that may be released in theaters this month. By Eric Ditzian Justin Bieber in “Never Say Never” Photo: Paramount With a running time of one hour and 45 minutes, Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” packs in 3-D concert footage, home videos, behind-the-scenes looks, interviews with everyone from Snoop Dogg to the pop star’s vocal coach and extended, slow-motion shots of the 16-year-old shaking out his famous locks. Perhaps, however, you didn’t get your fill of the kid — perhaps your Bieber Fever rages on. In which case, you might be in luck. New York magazine’s Vulture blog reports that Paramount Pictures is making plans for a director’s cut of the film, following its $29.5 million opening this past weekend. Director Jon M. Chu is said to be working on an updated version of the movie, including new live performances, footage of Bieber at the “Never Say Never” premiere and various advance screenings, and potentially scenes shot at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. The studio is reportedly waiting for delivery of the re-cut film before deciding if it will be released in theaters late in February or as part of a special DVD. MTV News’ request for comment to Paramount (which, like MTV News, is owned by Viacom) was not returned as of press time. Box-office grosses for the concert film are likely to decline in the coming weeks, following Bieber fans’ initial pilgrimage to multiplexes during opening weekend, and the re-cut film could dramatically boost its B.O. bottom line. If the new version does hit theaters, it will likely be as a 3-D-only release, as the cost of releasing digital prints is significantly less than printing and shipping film prints. A final decision on a release will be made once Chu finishes the cut after returning from international premieres in London and Paris.
