‘Never Say Never’ Director Wanted To Film Justin Bieber Haircut

‘I would have brought a 3-D camera there,’ Jon Chu tells MTV News of missing out on teen star’s historic barber trip. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Justin Bieber gets his hair cut Photo: TMZ There are few celebrities these days that can set the news wires and Internets on fire by engaging in basic, everyday tasks. Lady Gaga, Robert Pattinson, Kim Kardashian and, of course, Justin Bieber, are among the few whose every move is cause for Twitter trends and celebrations. Case in point, Bieber’s haircut . A photo of the 16-year-old’s newly shorn locks appeared on TMZ on Monday, along with news that the clippings will be given to charity to raise money for various causes, including animal rights. Naturally, Bieber’s famously fluffy hair swoop has been the subject of innumerable news stories and tweets, so when MTV News checked in with his “Never Say Never” director Jon Chu on Tuesday (February 22), we had to bring up the very popular subject of Biebs’ new haircut. Chu’s only complaint was that Bieber didn’t let him know about the momentous occasion. “I would have brought a 3-D camera there,” said Chu, who recently announced the release of a special “Director’s Fan Cut” of the film . “I would have shot it for [‘Never Say Never’] 3.0.” Chu went on to say that he won’t miss the shaggy flip and heartily approves of Bieber’s shorter ‘do. “Two thumbs-up for the haircut, for sure. He’s wanted it for a long time,” Chu told us. “I’m just happy for him because he’s been holding on. He’s like, ‘I need to get the haircut, I want to get rid of it!’ But he has his hair flip which he can’t get rid of, but now it’s R.I.P. hair flip.” We then pointed out that “R.I.P. hair flip” sounded like a perfect Bieber-related Twitter trending topic, and Chu informed us that we were way behind. “It is a Twitter trending topic!” he said with a chuckle. “At least it was yesterday, last night.” What do you think of Justin Bieber’s new hair? Kevin Costner Will Be ‘Pa’ In ‘Superman,’ Sources Reveal

Reports say Oscar-winner will play Man of Steel’s adoptive father, Jonathan Kent, in Zack Snyder’s reboot. By Shawn Adler Kevin Costner Photo: Getty Images/ Kevin Winter Kevin Costner is a man of interest for the Man of Steel, with director Zack Snyder and team keen to cast the “Bull Durham” and “Dances With Wolves” star in their Superman reboot, according to a Deadline report. Citing “well-placed sources,” Latino Review reported that Costner will play Jonathan “Pa” Kent, Kal-El’s adoptive Earth father. With the film shrouded in secrecy, though, it might take Brainiac himself to figure out exactly for what role Costner is being courted. But, given Costner’s screen history in films like “Field of Dreams,” the role of “Pa,” played by Glenn Ford in Richard Donner’s 1978 “Superman,” seems likely. What little is known about the film suggests Costner also could play the role of Perry White, editor-in-chief of Metropolis mega-paper The Daily Planet , or General Zod, hinted as a companion to a rumored fellow Kryptonian villain. It’s possible Costner might even step into the shoes of fellow Oscar-winners Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey to play archenemy Lex Luthor. Whoever he plays, Costner would be alongside Brit Henry Cavill , pegged to wear the Man of Steel tights in Snyder’s re-imagining. Fans recently got their first glimpse of “The Tudors” star on the cover of Entertainment Weekly sporting a T-shirt with the iconic Superman shield. New version of Justin Bieber film to hit theaters

LOS ANGELES ( Hollywood Reporter ) – In an unprecedented move, Paramount ‘s Insurge Pictures will release an updated director’s fan cut of “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” in a one-week exclusive run, beginning February 25. Director Jon M. Chu ‘s updated “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never Director’s Fan Cut” will play only in 3D runs in the U.S. and Canada , replacing the original version. There will be 40 minutes of new footage. Chu has trimmed 30 minutes of footage from the original “Never Say Never” to accommodate the additional scenes. Updated version runs 115 minutes, instead of the original running time of 105 minutes. Move is designed to whip up renewed interest among Bieber’s diehard fans, and spark repeat viewing in the film’s third weekend in release. “Never Say Never” is already a financial success, having grossed $51.4 million in its first 11 days in release. The original “Never Say Never” will continue playing in 2D runs. The cost of a 35mm print makes sending the director’s cut to those theaters financially unworkable. Digital prints, however, are a fraction of the cost. Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore said the studio is “trying to take advantage of options from digital technology that didn’t exist before and give fans even more of what they loved from the first version.” As he began the editing process, Chu realized he had a significant amount of footage that he couldn’t use in the initial theatrical release. He then spent dozens of hours on Twitter and Facebook engaging with fans to see what they would like to see. Some of the new footage includes more of Bieber’s friends and hometown life, as well as new songs and special footage shot of the film’s premiere at theaters across the country. “I realized I had an embarrassment of riches when I was I in the cutting room,” said Chu. “This cut allows me to retain some of the best scenes from the original movie, while incorporating previously unseen footage and new material I shot during our extensive promotional tour on behalf of the movie. Justin’s dedication to his fan base is unwavering and I was inspired as a filmmaker to attempt to provide them a unique experience that showed even more of his world.” Paramount has submitted the “Director’s Cut” to the ratings board. Because the studio isn’t asking for a new rating, it doesn’t need to pull “Never Say Never” from theaters pending review by the Classification and Ratings Administration. (Editing by Zorianna Kit )

REVIEW: Appetites Go Awry in Nifty, Nasty Horror Import We Are What We Are

You might want to catch We Are What We Are before its inevitable, much-too-glossy remake brightens the walls of American multiplexes. I saw it last fall at the 2010 Fantastic Fest in Austin, where writer/director Jorge Michel Grau’s deft confidence at rendering his tale of family dynamics gone horribly awry in Mexico City got his film a jury prize.

Liam Neeson As Hollywood’s Newest Badass: ‘Unknown’ Co-Stars Explain

Diane Kruger and January Jones say actor’s ‘body of work and gravitas as an actor’ add a new layer to action films. By Shawn Adler, with reporting by Kara Warner Diane Kruger and January Jones Photo: MTV News He may have broken in with roles in sword-and-sorcery flicks like “Excalibur” and “Krull,” but how in the world did the Oscar-nominated man best known for his quiet, dramatic work in films like “Schindler’s List,” “Nell” and “Kinsey” suddenly become film’s most believable, in-demand 60-year-old badass? It’s precisely because of his previous work, “Unknown” co-stars Diane Kruger and January Jones insisted to MTV News. “I wanted to be in this movie because of Liam really,” Kruger said. “Especially this kind of film. … I think because of his age and because of his body of work and his gravitas as an actor, I think it brings a whole other layer of depth to this kind of film. It feels fresh. It feels like, yes, it’s entertaining and it’s light, but there’s a whole other layer of emotions and character work going on.” Two years after Neeson rocked audiences as a super-talented assassin out to save his daughter in “Taken,” the Irish thesp is back to kick butt and take names in “Unknown,” a neo-Hitchcockian thriller about a man bereft of an identity after a car accident leaves him unsure of who he really is. While unquestionably dangerous and capable, here Neeson also has to play fragile and flustered. It’s a dichotomy that doesn’t just show up in his film roles, January Jones argued, but in the man himself. “He’s such a perfect casting choice for this movie, because you could be intimidated by him physically because he is fit and could cause you harm,” the future Emma Frost told MTV News. “But at the same time there’s something so vulnerable about him in certain things he says and certain things he does that makes you want to take care of him, there’s both sides of that. You could believe that he could be a bad guy, but you could also want him to succeed.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Unknown.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
