‘Social Network’ Director David Fincher ‘Humbled’ By Oscar Nods

‘We knew the movie was about basic human emotions and the need for acceptance,’ producer Michael De Luca tells MTV News. By Aly Semigran Andrew Garfield and Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network” Photo: Columbia Pictures Having gone from “that Facebook movie” to Oscar-nominated masterpiece, “The Social Network” has run the quite the gamut since its release last October. Continuing an awards-season streak, the film picked up eight Oscar nominations on Tuesday morning — the third most-nominated of the Oscar contenders, behind “The King’s Speech” with 12, “True Grit” with 10, and (in a tie) “Inception” with eight — including Best Picture, Best Director (David Fincher), Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg), Best Adapted Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin) and Best Score (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). Fincher, earning his second career nomination, released a statement that read, “I’m very grateful and humbled by the nominations for ‘The Social Network.’ I’m incredibly proud of the work of my wildly talented collaborators in front of and behind the camera — all of whom gave the best of themselves and their talents in service to a film about a groundbreaking American innovation. This directing nomination represents the sum of the work of all of us, and I want to acknowledge the vast contributions to this film of all of my good friends and creative partners. The success of our movie belongs to many people, and this nomination is theirs to share.” Sorkin, who penned the dialogue-heavy movie , spoke to “Good Morning America” about the good news, calling the Oscar nods “a triumph,” and adding, “I think it was the people I got to sit in the room with. I love the way audiences responded to this movie. They came out and saw it and they loved it. It’s a special cherry on top.” Meanwhile, MTV News caught up with Michael De Luca, one of the film’s producers, shortly after the nominations were announced. Unlike many likely nominees, De Luca didn’t play coy about his expectations. “I set my little iPhone alarm to wake me up at 5:15 a.m.,” he told us about Tuesday morning’s announcements. “For me, personally, I’ve always done this as a fan of movies, as a bystander over the years in my career as a producer. But this is the first time I’ve had a horse in the race, so I was very excited to wake up and it was a real blast.” De Luca, who echoed Fincher and Sorkin’s sentiments about the entire cast and crew being “incredibly happy and grateful,” went on to say, “We knew what the movie was about. We knew the movie was about basic human emotions and the need for acceptance, the longing for love and friendship and how trying to find those things at 19 is hard enough, but when you’re a genius and you’re revolutionizing communication and you’re creating things that will go on to maintain billion-dollar evaluations, how do you maintain your relationships? How do you change relationships?” The Oscar-nominee also talked about how the modern-day tale featured classic themes. “Whether you’re Copernicus, Galileo or Mark Zuckerberg, no matter what you’re doing in your career or professional life, there are basic human needs. The heart must have to have a happy life,” De Luca said. “We knew that that was what the movie was about and we knew that Aaron Sorkin’s script seized on that and wrote a story of friendship and what you lose when you win, and we knew that nobody was going to know that until they saw the movie. It was like having the best secret in the world.” Still, while there was mostly celebration for “The Social Network” team this morning, one name was notably left off of the list: Andrew Garfield. Widely regarded as a shoo-in for a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance as Facebook CFO Eduardo Saverin, Garfield has earned nods at the Critics’ Choice, Golden Globes, and the upcoming Screen Actors Guild Awards; he was ultimately snubbed by the Academy. “He’s an incredible actor,” De Luca said of Garfield. “And the ensemble we had in the film was incredible and they’re all going off to star in [films] on their own and we’re going to hear from Andrew for years to come. I can’t tell you enough about his performance. He’s a consummate actor. Justin Bieber Debuts New ‘Never Say Never’ Poster

Teen sensation is shown between his Canadian hometown and the big city in movie poster. By Kara Warner The “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” movie poster Photo: Paramount Pictures As most of Justin Bieber ‘s die-hard fans already know, the movie event of February is quickly approaching. Bieber’s first full-length feature film, “Never Say Never,” hits theaters in about three weeks, on February 11, just in time for Valentine’s Day weekend. MTV News has been keeping up with the Biebs since he announced plans for the big-screen project back in August. On Monday (January 24), Paramount Pictures released a new poster for the film, which shows the 16-year-old standing tall in the middle of a street, seemingly stuck between two worlds — on the left side is his hometown of Stratford in Ontario, Canada, which is shown in black-and-white, with a sign in the background that reads “Population: 32,000”; on the right side, Bieber is standing next to the crowded New York City skyline, which is depicted in full color. The “Baby” singer is shown dressed in all black, including a black jacket that zips up off-center, black jeans and black, unlaced high-tops. The tagline reads: “Find out what’s possible if you never give up.” It’s a nice change from the first poster , which just showed Bieber’s profile and that famous, perfectly side-swept hair, partially hidden by a hoodie. It’s interesting that the “big city” shown in the new poster is New York City, however, rather than Atlanta, where Bieber moved when he was just starting out after signing with manager Scooter Braun and linking up with ATL superstar Usher. Also worth noting are two new clips and partial trailers from the movie, called “Every Stage” and “Underdog,” respectively. Both clips show a few adorable home videos of Bieber learning to play the drums around age 3, followed by shots of what his life is like now, including screaming fans, huge sold-out concerts, his friendship with Usher, etc. What do you think of the new poster and videos? Liam Hemsworth Interested In Playing Peeta In ‘Hunger Games’

‘I read the script. It’s a really, really cool story,’ actor tells MTV News at Sundance. By Aly Semigran Liam Hemsworth Photo: MTV News Not since the adaptations of the “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” sagas has there been as much buzz surrounding the casting of a beloved book headed for the big screen as there is right now for “The Hunger Games.” While most of the talk has been around who will play the story’s heroine, Katniss ( Hailee Steinfeld , Chloe Moretz and Elle Fanning are just a few of the actresses rumored to be vying for the part), many fans are wondering who will be cast as Katniss’ Hunger Games partner (and possible love interest) Peeta. MTV News caught up with Liam Hemsworth at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday (January 22), and it turns out the actor hasn’t just had his name thrown in the ring for consideration: He’s already read the script. “I read the script,” said the 21-year-old star, who was in Park City to go snowboarding with his older brother, actor Chris Hemsworth. “It’s a really, really cool story.” The actor, known to many as Miley Cyrus’ ex-boyfriend , expressed interest in the film, adding, “I love action … gritty kinda stuff like that.” For fans worried that the PG-13 adaptation will tone down the action in the book, Hemsworth said, “It’s super-dark. It’s all young kids in these Hunger Games, which are crazy, insane things.” Hemsworth, who described the project as “definitely something different,” says he could “possibly” see himself taking on the role of Peeta. While he hasn’t yet met or auditioned for the film’s director, Gary Ross, he told MTV, “I mean, it’s pretty early right now. … But, yeah, I’m sure I’ll meet [him] on it soon.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . The 9 Batsh*t-Craziest Lines Heard at the Hobo with a Shotgun Premiere

“Let’s tear this place apart!” So instructed director Jason Eisener before Friday’s midnight premiere of Hobo with a Shotgun , the unabashedly campy Canadian-American grindhouse flick about a homeless drifter who cleans up the streets of a depraved urban metropolis with only a pawn shop shotgun and plenty of gloriously insane death-dealing catchphrases in his arsenal. And while it may have disappointed Eisener and Co. that an actual riot didn’t erupt before or after their film, they must have been pleased that Hobo played exactly right to just the genre-loving crowd it was made for.

Does ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1’ Title Card Reflect Movie’s Tone?

Summit Entertainment says each ‘Twilight’ film’s color scheme has meaning. By Kara Warner “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit In the spirit of the old adage, “When it rains, it pours,” a flurry of “Twilight” news and imagery has hit the Internet over the past two weeks. Things kicked off last week with the release of the first photo from “Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” which showed the film’s paramours, Robert Pattinson’s Edward and Kristen Stewart’s Bella, in a very romantic moment on the night after their wedding. Shortly after that photo set “Twilight” fan eyes popping and hearts racing, MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with Pattinson himself at the Golden Globe Awards to get his thoughts on the steamy-looking photo. On Friday (January 21), Summit Entertainment released yet another early gift for the millions of “Twilight” fans, the official title card for the first part of “Breaking Dawn.” Keeping with the tradition and look of the first three films, “Twilight,” “New Moon” and “Eclipse,” this “Dawn” title card has the same font (its official name is Zephyr) that fans have come to know and love. And while the card for “Twilight” was red, “New Moon” was gold and “Eclipse” was shiny silver, this card for Part 1 of “Dawn” is a reddish orange — the color of, well, the sky as dawn breaks. According to Summit, each card has a unique color to reflect the tone of the story. So judging from this intense color, what might we expect from the film that we don’t already know about? Those who’ve read and obsessed over Stephenie Meyer’s novels know that the conclusion to the “Twilight Saga” packed a punch, complete with a vampire transformation , a marriage, a baby and a battle . What do you think of the “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” title card? What scenes are you most excited to see in the film? Tell us in the comments! Kim Kardashian Says She Gives Up The Glam In Hype Williams Video

Reality starlet tells MTV News veteran video director focused on Kim ‘the artist’ for upcoming ‘Turn It Up’ clip. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Kourtney and Kim Kardashian Photo: Devan Pratt/ MTV News Kim Kardashian is pretty clear about her music career: It’s a one-song deal. Even so, the project is already high-profile, with everyone from Kanye West to The-Dream to music-video maven Hype Williams playing some role in the creation of Kim Kardashian, pop star. And with the song, “Turn It Up,” gaining lots of buzz, fans of the reality starlet are eager to hear the full single and see how the video turns out. From the looks of things, her “one song” idea could wind up being bigger than she envisioned. MTV News caught up with Kim on Wednesday and she revealed some details about the upcoming video. “Hype Williams directed the video. It is so crazy,” she teased. “I mean his looks that he put me in [are crazy]. He really had say in what he wanted, I guess, [for what] Kim ‘the artist’ that I was playing in this role would look like, as opposed to the everyday glam Kim that you’re used to seeing. So, it was really fun to play dress up and have all these other looks that I never really tried before.” Big sis Kourtney was at Kim’s side during the shoot, giving props to her “Kourtney & Kim Take New York” co-star. “Love it! And I was there with her throughout the whole process, which was fun,” Kourtney told us. “Going to the studio and, you know, just everything we did. It was a really fun process.” Kim has been reluctant to give up info about the song, but a source recently told MTV News that the song is a club joint. It’s like “back-in-the-day Jennifer Lopez … a little bit of a Jennifer Lopez feel. It’s totally a dance song,” the source explained. “It’s good and it definitely sounds like [Kim] in my mind. You know it’s her voice. She definitely can sing.” Are you looking forward to Kim’s first official music video release? Tell us in the comments!

Lady Gaga Born This Way Director Talks About Short Film

Mariano Vivanco says, ‘It’s one of my favorite films I’ve done.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Mere hours after completing the edit for the Lady Gaga/Mugler Born This Way collaboration that debuted in full Thursday (January 20), the short film’s director, fashion photographer Mariano Vivanco, spoke to MTV News about the film, which not only debuts Nicola Formichetti as the line’s creative director, but also gives fans a taste of a fresh Gaga song , remixed especially for Mugler. The finished version of the track will appear on Gaga’s album, to be released in May. Vivanco explained that what was supposed to be a small-scale Formichetti/Vivanco fashion video to display Mugler’s new looks became a full-scale music video-like shoot once they knew Gaga would be involved — even if they didn’t have the actual song until after they did most of the work. “OK, I’ll be 100 percent honest with you: We didn’t get the music until after the video,” Vivanco revealed. “Nicola hummed it to me and tried singing it to me. It was hilarious. And described it to me in a really articulate way. He said, ‘It’s techno meets Whitney Houston, in a really good way.’ “When he described that to me, I thought the best treatment to that would be to film it in slow motion ’cause I think house music with slow-moving images works,” he continued. “I filmed a lot of scenes that were in my heart and in my mind.” It’s hard to believe that Vivanco hadn’t heard the song when he shot the eerie, moody scenes. But, he notes that a lot of the work to mesh the video and audio came in post-production. After having a few hours to digest the dark, black-and-white art-house music video, Vivanco admitted that he loves the clip and said it was made only more special with the addition of the Gaga track. “A short film for me is like a relationship: You have to love all the imperfections. Hell, I love the film. I think it’s one of my favorite films I’ve done,” he said. “Of course, words can’t express the honor that [Gaga] would give us something so nice to work with. When I hear that song, and you hear it live like we did at the show, I’m like, ‘She’s done it again.’ ” So, how does Gaga feel about it? “She called Nicola, and she said she loved the video,” Vivanco said. “She’s the queen of our times.” Have you seen the Born This Way short film? Channing Tatum And Tracy Morgan Square Off On ‘Son Of No One’ Set

‘Tracy Morgan is going to shock the world,’ Tatum tells MTV News of funnyman’s dramatic turn in Sundance movie. By Kara Warner Channing Tatum in “The Son of No One” Photo: Millennium Films The 2011 Sundance Film Festival is just getting under way, and MTV News will have you covered with all the latest and greatest news from Park City, Utah. Kicking off our coverage is a sneak peek at one of the fest’s big premieres and this year’s closing-night film, “The Son of No One.” Written and directed by Dito Montiel (“A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints,” “Fighting”), the film revolves around two men forced to relive two murders they committed as young boys. The film stars Channing Tatum, Al Pacino, Katie Holmes, Tracy Morgan, Ray Liotta and Juliette Binoche. MTV News was lucky enough to drop by the New York set of the film awhile back, on a night when Montiel and crew were filming a heated scene between Tatum and Morgan. “It’s about two kids in 1986 that get away with murder,” Montiel explained. “And how it can catch up with you in 2002 [the year in which the film is set], so we’re never in reality.” “There’s a real bond between these guys,” Morgan said of the lead characters. “One’s life went in one direction, which is very successful, and the other friend, which is my character, went in a really messed-up direction.” “Son of No One” marks Montiel and Tatum’s third pairing together, which made us wonder if Montiel wrote the part with the “G.I. Joe” star in mind. “No, I never do. I keep ending up with him. I don’t know why,” he admitted. “That sounds like I’m being nice for MTV for whatever, but he’s great and I love him and he’s killing it.” Tatum plays Jonathan White, nicknamed “Milk.” “It’s an intense movie,” Tatum said. “I think Tracy Morgan is going to shock the world. Nobody has ever seen him do drama or anything like that.” Speaking of which, Morgan said a large part of the draw for wanting to sign on to the film was to flex his dramatic acting muscles. “I feel it’s an opportunity that I want to really take advantage of. I want to grow as an artist, as a person, and I understand my limitations,” he said. “Comedy is a comfort zone for me and I don’t mind coming out of my comfort zone.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Son of No One.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
