New Poster for The King’s Speech Focuses on Old Timey Microphone, Colin Firth’s Pores

When Movieline asked The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper about his film’s horrible excuse for a movie poster , the candid Oscar contender summed it up like so: “I hate it. I hate it. And it is not going to ever be on any cinema walls. It will be replaced. It’s a train smash. It’s a train smash.” With that in mind, it’s time to take a look at The Weinstein Company’s replacement poster for The King’s Speech , which dispenses from shady Photoshopping techniques for a microphone and Colin Firth’s skin. Progress?

Isaac Mizrahi Recaps Fashion Show: ‘There Was a Drama Over Who to Eliminate’

Isaac Mizrahi, who judges and mentors contestants on The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection , always has more to say about each week’s results than what we see on TV. (Damn editors.) Since we didn’t catch up with Mizrahi last week, we’re reviewing two weeks of Fashion Show couture with him today — including a dated red-leather tribute to Mary J. Blige, a baggy denim ode to grunge, and one of the weirdest necklines you’ve ever seen.

Breaking: Heath Ledger Won’t Appear in The Dark Knight Rises

Or anything else for that matter. According to THR , a rumor that Christopher Nolan was going to use footage of Heath Ledger’s performance from The Dark Knight in the film’s sequel is total bunk. “We’re not doing that,” said Nolan’s wife and producing partner Emma Thomas. Phew ! Good thing that’s settled. [ THR /Heat Vision ]

On DVD: Standing Ovation is the Movie You Wanted Burlesque To Be

Under the radar of most people — not including New Beverly Cinema programmer Phil Blankenship, who brought this film to my attention when he booked it as a midnight movie a few months ago — Standing Ovation (now available at Amazon.com) snuck in and out of theaters this summer. But this shrieky kids’ musical isn’t merely a would-be High School Musical ; it’s the kind of delicious disaster you were hoping Burlesque was going to be.

30 Seconds To Mars’ Jared Leto Clears Up ‘Hurricane’ Controversy

Short film wasn’t banned on MTV, contrary to reports. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars’ Jared Leto in “Hurricane” Photo: EMI On Sunday, hours before 30 Seconds to Mars’ long-awaited “Hurricane” short film was set to premiere on MTV and MTV.com, Jared Leto took to his blog to post a lengthy list of “issues” an unnamed network had with the mini-movie. The list was as detailed as it was long (sample entry: “09:17 — Woman’s finger running over other woman’s bottom in G-String and touching anus — COMPLETELY RESTRICTED”), but the point Leto was making was pretty clear. And just in case it wasn’t, he spelled it out in the title of his blog post: ” ‘Hurricane’ Banned From Television.” That led to several reports stating that MTV had banned the “Hurricane” clip, which, as it turns out, wasn’t actually true. In fact, the letter he posted on his blog wasn’t even from MTV, as he explained Wednesday (December 1) in an e-mail to MTV News. “The standards notes I posted are not from MTV USA, they are from another channel entirely. One of MANY, actually, that sent long lists of what was required to be censored in order to secure air time around the world,” he wrote. “MTV’s list was actually rather light compared to others. MOST channels around the world flat out restricted us completely from any ‘daytime play’ at all, relegating the film to graveyard-shift viewing only.” That said, “Hurricane” was pulled from MTV’s on-air rotation subsequent to its premiere, but, as Leto put it, not because the network had banned the film. Rather, as he said in a separate phone interview with MTV News, “There are some edits that need to be made … there is some footage that remained in the cut that was, I guess, overlooked.” In a statement to MTV News, a spokesperson for MTV added that the channel would return “Hurricane” to its on-air lineup once the edit had been made. “Contrary to various erroneous reports, the video has not been banned from MTV,” the statement read. “The video is currently available on MTV.com and will return to on-air rotation shortly.” For his part, Leto remains rather mystified about the entire thing. To hear him tell it, there’s nothing in “Hurricane” that’s particularly controversial, and he never intended for the video to stir up this much outrage. “I never set out to make a controversial film. I didn’t set out to make a film that would get banned — as it has — from several networks around the world, and restricted to nighttime broadcast,” he said. “I didn’t really have those things in mind, I really just set out on this journey and followed my creative instinct to tell the truth. “I think with a piece of work like this, this all becomes part of the process — whether it’s a song or a show or a film — it all brings us on this journey, and, this just happens to be part of the journey of ‘Hurricane,’ this controversial, banned little film,” he added. “I didn’t expect all this to happen, but it’s a good thing that it happens, only because of the conversation that it may provoke, about these sort of things, and looking at art and creative expression and weighing that against protecting the viewers from the exhibition of certain behaviors.” Have you watched “Hurricane” yet? True Grit: A Revenge Movie for the Whole Family?

Sure, the trailers portray the Coen Brothers’ True Grit as a foreboding revenge piece “from the directors of No Country for Old Men ,” but the duo says that the PG-13 movie is actually modeled after Treasure Island and other adventure films they saw as kids. They also claim the film is tonally different than anything they’ve done before, and fits perfectly with a holiday release date. So perhaps a Western-revenge tale you can take your daughter to has finally arrived. Review embargo breaks today, so stay tuned…[ USA Today ]

Jared Leto Fights Censorship Of 30 Seconds To Mars’ ‘Hurricane’ Video

Singer/director claims video has been banned by a number of outlets for its sexual imagery. By Gil Kaufman 30 Seconds to Mars’ Jared Leto in “Hurricane” Photo: EMI After spending a month of sleepless nights rushing to finish a 13-minute cut of 30 Seconds to Mars’ epic “Hurricane” video , you’d think singer Jared Leto could finally enjoy a bit of a break. But on the same day that the clip debuted on MTV.com, Leto was back at work, decrying what he called the censorship of the video, which contains copious amounts of S&M imagery, heavily choreographed slo-mo fisticuffs, and an seemingly endless string of controversial images intended to shock and confuse. In a blog entry on JaredLeto.com posted on Monday and titled “BANNED FROM TELEVISION,” Leto, who directed the clip under his pseudonym, Bartholomew Cubbins, posted a letter (one of several he claimed he received) from an unnamed executive at an unnamed TV network who explained why the video couldn’t be aired in its present state. “Overall the bondage theme will warrant a POST 10 p.m. restriction as the film is in its current form,” read the letter. “There is one shot that will have to be removed completely for a POST 10 p.m. restriction. 09:17 — WOMAN RUNS FINGER OVER OTHER WOMAN’S G-STRING-CLAD BOTTOM AND TOUCHES HER ANUS — This shot makes the video completely restricted. There are other bondage shots towards the end of the film that [C]ompliance were unclear about, they would have to view frame by frame on tape to gauge whether they would need to be cut too for POST 10PM. The violence in the film is not graphic and would warrant a POST 7 p.m. restriction. But the overall sexual content does push the restriction up.” The letter then goes on to log, scene-by-scene the potentially objectionable images, from one in which Leto’s character jumps out of a skyscraper window (not a problem), to another in which a priest, rabbi, and imam burn holy books on a pyre in an alley, and a brief image of dripping hot wax over a woman’s body. The breakdown explicitly states more than 40 scenes or images that are restricted to after 10 p.m. and others that are more suitable for showing after 9 p.m. or 7 p.m. “We always knew there would be some images that would have a tough time getting through,” Leto told EW.com on Monday about the controversy. “But we didn’t expect this kind of pushback that we’re getting now.” Leto has said he’s working on a “creative” solution to edit the original 20-plus-minute clip down so he can at least get it shown before the 10 p.m. curfew. He also told EW.com that the plan all along was to have several versions of the video available to fans, including an uncensored full cut. “I had always planned on having an explicit version and then a version that was not so explicit,” Leto said. “The version that we were trying to get on broadcast is not the explicit version, and that’s still having a really difficult time.” Leto is frankly a bit confused about why the networks that reportedly rejected the video are so upset about the sexual images in it. “I’m not interested in provocation for provocation’s sake,” he explained. “I just think it’s interesting that when you turn on the news or whatever else catches your interest, how much violence and negativity is available out there. As soon as it comes time for sexuality, it’s a big shock that people are sexual beings. It’s an interesting double standard to me.” What do you think of 30 Seconds to Mars’ “Hurricane” video? Matt Rutler and Christina Aguilera: Getting Serious?

Bad news for concerned friends of Christina Aguilera: things are getting serious between the singer and production assistant/musician Matt Rutler. Those close to Aguilera are reportedly worried that she’s rebounding from her divorce with the wrong man , but that hasn’t stopped this relationship from progressing. The couple enjoyed an evening out at the Abbey in West Hollywood on November 24, where a witness says the pair drank, danced and “Christina was in a great mood and seemed very into Matt.” From there, sources tell People that Aguilera and Rutler flew to New York for the weekend, as the former left son Max with his father, Jordan Bratman. “This is the first Thanksgiving she was without Max,” said an insider. “It was really hard for her and she was feeling sad, so she decided to go to the East Coast with Matt and a group of friends.” The trip cross country took these two to Rhode Island, where Aguilera took a major step in meeting Rutler’s mother. Does these mean wedding bells might actually be on the way already? Not so fast, says a friend: “They’re still getting to know each other better.” Christina met Matthew on the set of Burlesque , where he worked as a production assistant and she worked as one of the leads in the movie alongside Cher. 20 Rejected Titles for ‘Deadly Serious’ Cowboys & Aliens

Remember that surprisingly serious trailer for Cowboys & Aliens ? Well, supposedly we can expect the same dark tone in the actual film. Jon Favreau has said that the film is a straight Sergio-Leone-style western crossed with Ridley Scott’s Alien . That sounds great! But apparently Universal is very worried that audiences are expecting a silly action-comedy instead. Hmm. This seems a bit disingenuous considering that the movie is called, um… Cowboys & Aliens . If this is the title they decided on while hoping to market a “deadly serious” film, I can only imagine the list of titles they rejected. And so, in Movieline tradition , here is that list.
