Bad Guys Have Cooler Motorcycles Than Captain America in Just-Released Set Photos

New photos from the upcoming Captain America have been released from the film’s set in…Britain? What!? So much for patriotism. In any case, it looks like the captain (played here by a stuntman, not the very carefully cast Chris Evans) has his work cut out for him – while he chokes on exhaust fumes from an bulky military cycle, Red Skull’s henchman zip along on sleek bikes that look like they came from the future. Check them out after the jump.

Emma Roberts and Directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden on It’s Kind of a Funny Story’s Unexpected Uplift

It’s only a few days until this Saturday’s Toronto Film Festival premiere of It’s Kind of a Funny Story , and already, something feels very different for filmmakers Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. It isn’t just the assurance that Focus Features will release the film in theaters October 8 — as Boden puts it, “It’s nice to be able to go to a festival and enjoy the response to the film without that added pressure of having to sell it” — but the realization that after making very challenging, independent movies like Half Nelson and Sugar , Boden and Fleck have turned in a third feature that could finally be their mainstream crowd-pleaser.

‘Eclipse’ Will Be Re-Released On Friday To Celebrate Bella’s Birthday

‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ will hit theaters again on September 10. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Didn’t get a chance to see “Eclipse” in theaters the first time around? No problem! The movie will be re-released this Friday (September 10). Summit is releasing the flick to the cinemas again in honor of Bella’s birthday, which is on September 13. “Bella Swan’s birthday is on September 13! What are you doing to celebrate?” a message on “The Twilight Saga” official Facebook page reads. “In celebration of Bella’s birthday, ECLIPSE will be re-released in theatres nationwide this Friday! It’s your last chance to see it on the big screen with your friends.” The film, the third installment in the “Twilight Saga,” was originally released last June. It follows the love triangle between Bella, Edward and Jacob as they fend off a group of vampires, led by Victoria, who would like to see Bella out of the picture. In addition to fending off evil vamps, Bella must decide if she wants to stay human and possibly be in a relationship with werewolf Jacob or turn vampire in order to be with her true love, Edward, a choice that Jacob hopes she doesn’t make. “The love triangle is real,” Stewart said of the power struggle back in June, just as the film was hitting theaters. “In [ ‘Eclipse’ ], she is just older and a little bit more [wise]. Now you really believe her. It took a while for her to know herself well enough to make a decision.” After the “Twilight” actors wrap up other projects they are working on, they will head back to the set to film the last two movies in the series, “Breaking Dawn” parts one and two , expected for release in 2011 and 2012 respectively. “Dreamgirls” director Bill Condon will helm the final film adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling books. Will Texas Taxpayers Reward Racist, Anti-American ‘Machete’?

Do the math. Instead of someone with the last name Rodriguez telling the tale of noble, sympathetic Hispanics victimized by white American southern rednecks  – all of whom are portrayed as murderous racists, what if we had a white filmmaker telling the tale of noble and sympathetic Texas border ranchers victimized by marauding, racist, gold-toothed unwashed Mexicans out to steal their land? Oh, and we would close our story with a stand-up-and-cheer race war where Texas ranchers unite to violently mow down evil Mexicans. The same Left whose standards are so low that opposition to ObamaCare, same-sex marriage, and the Ground Zero Mosque can only be driven by a “phobia” or “ist” – the same PC Left  that hides  “silly” old Bugs Bunny cartoons and can’t broadcast a season of “24″ without including a patronizing  Don’t Be Racist to Muslims  PSA – sees the vicious portrayal of white Texans in “Machete”  as nothing more than a silly goof . I guess it’s easy to convince yourself of that when your principles are based on an agenda as opposed to any sense of consistency or intellectual honesty. The bottom line, however, is that whether Rodriguez likes it or not, this is still the United States of America, which means he has the right to make whatever film he wants and 20th Century-Fox has the same right to distribute it. But does that mean Texas taxpayers should  foot part of the bill  for a cinematic slandering of both their state and identity? [emphasis mine] A tax incentives bill passed by the Texas Legislature in 2007 and strengthened in 2009 offers grants of five per cent to 17.5 per cent, based on the type of project and the amount of money spent in the state, the Austin Statesman reported. But the law requires that productions meet certain standards.  It also rules out incentives for movies that cast Texas in a negative light . …. The film was released this weekend, meaning Rodriguez now has about two months to submit it to the Texas Film Commission. The Commission’s head Bob Hudgins, has to decide whether to approve funds for the film, which was filmed in and around the Texan city of Austin. He recently told Texan media that he was nervous about turning down the state’s most prolific film director. However, he added:  ‘I have to make my determination on the final version of the film. I have to be Switzerland about it.’ If Commissioner Hudgins is going to be “Switzerland about it”  then Commissioner Hudgins should always be “Switzerland about it.” Meaning, the awarding of “Machete” with taxpayer dollars is also the setting of a precedent that might come back to haunt both him and the state somewhere down the line: Alamo Dawn:   Set in 2030, this affectionate nod to low-budget, paranoid, political actioner-thrillers like  Red  Dawn,  finds Texas overrun and under the thumb of lazy, shiftless Mexicans who may not need no steenkin’ badges but do need their tequila and white women. Tired of being racially oppressed, a group of good ole’ boys militia up to yee-haw and gun down all those who brought the failed and corrupt policies of Mexico to America. “This time they f*cked with the wrong Southerner.” If Commissioner Hudgins is going to force Texas taxpayers to foot the bill for “Machete” he had better ask himself what he would do if a bunch of rich, white “rednecks” got $30 million together to produce, market and self-distribute a ” Bizarro -Machete.” Could happen, right? After all, we are a bunch of racists. Crossposted at Big Hollywood

Miley Cyrus And Ashley Greene Shoot ‘LOL’ In Paris

Teen-movie queens spotted filming with Douglas Booth, Ashley Hinshaw and Lisa Esco By Jocelyn Vena Douglas Booth and Miley Cyrus on location for “LOL: Laughing Out Loud” Photo: Trago/ FilmMagic Miley Cyrus and Ashley Greene have taken the shoot for their upcoming flick “LOL: Laughing Out Loud” internationally. The ladies were photographed filming in Paris, after being spotted in Detroit earlier this summer. In stills taken on the set, Greene and Cyrus are pictured with various castmates filming “LOL,” which is due in 2011. In one photo, taken Monday (September 6), a smiling Cyrus, embraced at the waist by costar Douglas Booth, is standing alongside a pensive-looking Greene and other castmembers Ashley Hinshaw and Lina Esco. In other shots, Booth and Cyrus are snuggling on a double-decker bus, while Greene is on another bus. Booth and Cyrus also were filmed standing on a bridge chatting. Later, Cyrus, wearing a leather jacket, goes shopping with Hinshaw and Esco, and in another shot, she is alone and soaking wet, running through a puddle. Cyrus and Greene also were filmed walking arm in arm through Paris. Cyrus has said that in her post-“Hannah Montana” career , she’s looking to film more serious, mature movies, and that she intends to take a break from music to pursue her film career. “I’m working on lots of different films: drama, action, comedy,” she explained. “I like challenges, so I’m doing a little bit of everything.” “The more I make music that doesn’t truly inspire me, the more I feel like I’m blending in with everyone else,” she added. “I’m taking some time off [from music].” Given those plans, “LOL” seems like a step in the right direction. The film is about a group of young people, led by Cyrus (whose character is named Lola), who try to navigate high school peer pressures and romance in a tech-savvy world. It also stars Demi Moore as Cyrus’s mom. “She’s great,” Moore said of her co-star , “and I think that she is incredibly grounded. … [Miley] is a true professional, and she truly has a wonderful family. It really shows.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Where Have You Gone, Roger Ebert?

It breaks my heart to write this article.  Roger Ebert has been a part of my love for cinema since I was eleven years old.  When I was in the hospital for two months at age 19, I devoured his entire book of movie reviews.  I even met him at the 2002 Conference on World Affairs when he dissected David Lynch’s masterpiece  Mulholland Drive  (though I thought he needlessly threw in the towel regarding the film’s meaning).   I don’t need to expound on his contributions to film education and his championing of truly great movies. Nevertheless, I don’t know the man. I only know his words. Yet I have to wonder if the physical and mental trauma Roger has endured has taken a toll on his mind.  He always seemed apolitical to me.  He just wrote great movie reviews.  However, he started a political journal on his website in the past year.  It’s full of the same clap-trap expected from those on the Left: false premises, poorly constructed arguments, and replies to comments which dodge legitimate challenges. What really concerns me, though, is that it actually makes less sense than the normal clap-trap.  It’s nonsense.   Suddenly, all the great analysis directed at thousands of films – obviously pouring forth from a great intellect – has vanished.  Is it because Mr. Ebert shuts his mind off when discussing politics?  Is it because the anger he must have concerning his condition is being projected onto the Right? After all, the journal started after all the physical damage had been done to his appearance. Or has Roger Ebert actually lost his mind? His bizarre screed  from September 1 stems entirely from, “a Harris poll in which 57 percent of [GOP] party members believe he is a Muslim, 22% believe he “wants the terrorists to win,” and 24% believe he is the Antichrist”. There’s just one wee problem.  Mr. Ebert’s outrage relies on results from a polling entity that is as ridiculously unscientific as is possible.   Harris polls are not random surveys across broad demographics .  Harris polls incentivize participation by awarding cash and gifts.    The particular poll cited by Mr. Ebert  was rightly taken apart by ABC news polling director Gary Langer , who called the poll’s problems “fundamental…and carry a heavy dose of…acquiescence bias”. I also found it distressing that Mr. Ebert railed against the financing of a great Right Wing Conspiracy, yet failed to note that Harris Interactive is itself a public company, in severe distress likely because of its own flawed data mining methods.  They make it very clear in their annual report just how unscientific their polling is (Page 12 of the 10-K filing from August 31): “Our success is highly dependent on our ability to maintain sufficient capacity of our online panel… response rates vary with differing survey content, and the frequency with which panelists are willing to respond to survey invitations is variable…We are not always able to accommodate client requests to survey low-incidence, limited populations with specific demographic characteristics…our business will be adversely affected if we do not achieve sufficient response rates with our existing panelists or our panel narrows and we are unable to spend the funds necessary to recruit additional panelists”. Now, armed with this knowledge, doesn’t Mr. Ebert’s next paragraph reach uncomofortable heights of irony? “These figures sadden me with the depth of thoughtlessness and credulity they imply. A democracy depends on an informed electorate to survive. An alarming number of Americans and a majority of Republicans are misinformed”. And I think we know why! Okay, so thus far it can be chalked up to the usual debate style of the Left.  But here’s what concerns me about his state of mind: In responding to one of his commenters, who also questioned his reliance on Harris’ data, he said: “The entry isn’t about the accuracy of polls. It’s about a belief widely shared by too many Americans.  Unless you’re telling me Harris finds that Americans don’t believe Obama is a Muslim, what difference does its precise accuracy make? That’s off-topic.” This strikes me as weird because  his entire article  is based on polling data!  He says it right up front! “We already know the numbers. Pew finds that 18% of Americans believe President Obama is a Muslim. A new Newsweek poll, taken after the controversy over the New York mosque, places that figure at 24%” Nor did Mr. Ebert actually examine the  breakdown  of the Pew Poll.  In it, 10% of Democrats believe Obama is a Muslim.  Somehow 10% is not an alarming number, but 31% is.  I’d think, given the severity of the religious issue Mr. Ebert has raised, that even 1% would be alarming.  But 10% isn’t.   Interestingly, he also fails to mention that  43% said they don’t even know  what  President Obama’s religion is. Alas, there’s plenty more unintended irony to be found. “This many Americans did not arrive at such conclusions on their own. They were persuaded by a relentless process of insinuation, strategic silence and cynical misinformation”. Mr. Ebert seems to only reserve his scorn for  Republicans and “misinformed Americans” who apparently are “misinformed” because they listen to right wing radio talk show hosts. It’s  the typical elitist statement – how Liberals cannot fathom that people can actually think and act for themselves.  That maybe – just maybe – people take the time to research what’s actually behind things like, you know,  polling results  before making up their own minds? Mr. Ebert’s conclusion – insisting that, “prominent Republicans reiterate that they do not believe Obama is a Muslim” – is more than just ridiculous from a political perspective (I’m sure we can expect prominent Democrats who voted for the Iraq War to reiterate their support of it).   It’s also based on a flawed premise. Furthermore, Mr. Ebert does not seem to believe that Mr. Obama is capable of defending himself.   And why should it matter?  Even if the Harris poll were accurate, it’s Republicans that allegedly hold these beliefs.  Is Mr. Ebert afraid these beliefs will somehow spread to Democrats?   Since he believes people cannot think for themselves, perhaps that is the case.  After all, 10% have already been “misinformed”. I really wish Mr. Ebert would just stop writing about politics.  His errors are so fundamental.  To say, “our political immune system has only one antibody, and that is the truth” denies an actual fundamental truth itself:  politics has nothing to do with the truth.  Another of my fallen heroes, Chris Matthews, said it all in one of his terrific books:  “Politics is about survival.” The only truth I know is that Mr. Ebert’s line of thinking is just so uncharacteristic of the man I know that loves cinema and write so articulately about it.  I don’t care what his political beliefs are, ultimately.  I care about his mental faculties, and how he is undermining his own legacy as one of cinema’s great champions. I really wish he would return to the balcony.

Gilliam Loses Financing for Don Quixote Again, Seems Even More Similar to Title Character

The parallels between Terry Gilliam’s failed attempts to make The Man Who Killed Don Quixote and the hopeless quests of Quioxte himself keep piling up. Gilliam announced that financiers have pulled out, leaving him again without resources to complete the film that he has been trying to get off the ground for 10 years.

According to The Hollywood Reporter , George Clooney’s turn as a hitman dodging danger in Italy to carry out one last mission, raked in an estimated $12.9 million, besting “Machete” at the close of its first weekend in theaters. Featuring hip-hop and Hollywood names like Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen and T.I., the action flick about a smash-and-grab job by suave crew of thieves, snatched up $11.4 million in ticket sales for second place. After barely edging past “The American” on Friday, “Machete” will wrap up its debut weekend right behind “Takers” with a third-place finish. Featuring Jessica Alba and Danny Trejo, and boasting a much-hyped appearance from Lindsay Lohan , the film pulled in $11.3 million. “The Last Exorcism” held steady in the top five with $7.5 million. The fourth-place picture, which follows a film crew charged with documenting the creepy developments at a rural exorcism, has made a total of $32.3 million since hitting theaters last week. Drew Barrymore and Justin Long’s date-night pic, “Going the Distance,” lagged behind stronger debuts like “The American” and “Machete.” The rom-com, featuring the two real-life, off-and-on lovers playing a couple working to keep a long-distance romance afloat, rang up $6.9 million in ticket sales to land in fifth place during its opening weekend.
