Missy Elliott Remembers Aaliyah, Nine Years Later

‘I miss her every day,’ late singer’s collaborator tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez Aaliyah in 2000 Photo: Dave Allocca/Getty Images It’s been nine years since Aaliyah Dana Haughton died in a plane crash and left an immense void in the hearts of her family, friends and fans. The singer’s star was still rising when her life was cut short. She released multiplatinum albums and had just started her film career, but there was always a sense that her journey would be a long one, destined for greatness. Traces of her style and influence are apparent in contemporary artists, but her legacy is most evident in her collaborators, including Timbaland, Ginuwine and Missy Elliot. Missy spoke with MTV News via e-mail and shared some of her favorite Aaliyah memories. MTV : When you look around today at some of the current R&B stars, who do you see traces of Aaliyah’s influence in? Missy Elliott : I think it’s hard for Aaliyah to be duplicated, because she had her own lane. But Ciara is an R&B singer who loves to dance, and Aaliyah was that same kinda artist. We knew when she dropped a record, we couldn’t wait for the video. I think Aaliyah has influenced artists like a Ciara. MTV : How do you spend a day like this, where everyone is mourning the anniversary of your friend’s passing? Elliott : I plan to spend my day the same as any other day, because there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of [Aaliyah] or watch a video or play her music. I miss her every day. MTV : Do you know of any update on the plans for an Aaliyah movie? Elliott : As far as a movie for Aaliyah, I’ve been hearing some things but don’t know how true they are, and out of respect for her family, I would wait until they announce it. That way we will know it’s a fact. MTV : I’m sure you have so many memories of Aaliyah. What was it like the first time you met her? Elliott : When me and Tim first went to work with her, we were so nervous. She was such a big star, and I was scared she was gonna be some diva, sipping on tea, with people fixing her hair and nails, and she would say, “What is this music you got! It’s wack!” But when we walked in the studio, her smile made the whole room glow! She was like “Heyyyyy!” and gave us big hugs and made us feel like we were her cousins from down South. She was a very sweet spirit! Never seen her angry as long as I’ve known her, and in this business, that’s unheard of! MTV : What memory do you revisit most when you think about Aaliyah? Elliott : We’ve had so many memorable times. My most memorable is when me, her and Tim wore outfits alike! It was burgundy Pony outfits to the awards. Mind you, Aaliyah was petite so her Pony outfit looked so cute on her, but I kept looking at mine during the awards whispering to her saying, “I feel like a big-ass pony for real!” And we laughed and laughed! Too many memories to state them all! If she was still with us, she would still be at the top. Because she always stayed pushing herself to be better. Share your memories of Aaliyah in the comments. Dustin Hoffman Finally Joins Little Fockers in Reshoots

Sure, Little Fockers wrapped filming months ago, but it’s not too late to add a major cast member, is it? Deadline is reporting that the Meet the Parents sequel finally reached a deal to bring Dustin Hoffman back, and they’ll add his scenes via reshoots. “Universal continues to spin that Little Fockers could have gone out ‘as is’ since it scored an ’85’ for the top 2 boxes with test audiences,” says Deadline, but the studio would not rest until the film was as good as it can be, which makes me wonder if anyone at the studio actually watched Meet the Fockers . Queen Latifah, Dolly Parton To Make ‘Joyful Noise’

The movie star and country queen attempt to save a gospel choir in their new flick. By Mawuse Ziegbe Queen Latifah Photo: Michael Kovac/ FilmMagic Country music and hip-hop royalty Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah are slated to rule things on the big screen as co-stars in the upcoming flick “Joyful Noise.” According The Hollywood Reporter, the musicians/actors will play a pair of ladies who work to stop the closure of a scrappy gospel choir. Latifah will portray the mother of a couple of teenagers who takes the reins of the Pacashau Gospel Choir after the choir leader dies. Parton will play the late choir director’s wife who is gunning for the chance to helm the singing group. The country diva and jazz/pop/hip-hop mogul may also bust out a few tunes together in the film. “Noise” reportedly has a musical angle and director Todd Graff, the writer-director behind the 2003 coming-of-age flick “Camp,” is working on the script. “Noise” marks a return to the silver-screen for Parton, who followed up her successful crossover from country to pop with Hollywood hits in the ’80s like “Steel Magnolias” and “Nine to Five.” Latifah will stick up for a choir that has fallen on hard times in “Noise” but the multimedia mogul has said she wants to help out promising actors in Hollywood as well. The hip-hop pioneer and big-screen A-lister broke down her reasoning for bringing rapper Common onboard for her last project, “Just Wright.” “Every time that I do a movie, when I get into a position of power and my voice actually meant something, I realized that I could no longer walk out onto a set and look at a bunch of white males,” Latifah, who was a producer on “Wright,” told MTV News earlier this year. “That was just no longer acceptable. I need to see dynamics. I needed to see what I just came out of from walking off the street when I came in here. Where are the women? Where are the people of color? I need to see that in front of me, ’cause I just don’t feel like it’s right.” What do you think about Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton joining forces onscreen? Let us know in the comments below! Five Things You Need To Know About ‘Piranha 3D’

The schlocky, horror/comedy flick has more than just blood and boobs galore going for it. By Eric Ditzian Jerry O’Connell in “Piranha 3D” Photo: Atmosphere Entertainment The headline of this story is a tad misleading, because there’s really only one thing you need to know about “Piranha 3D:” It’s utterly insane. Inspired by the schlocky, love-it-or-hate-it franchise, the new movie spins a story about what happens when thousands of prehistoric fishies go tooth-to-flesh with thousands of college kids enjoying a sun-and-booze-filled spring break. It’s not spoiling anything to say that it doesn’t end well for the great majority of those slacking students. No sooner have they donned their skimpy bikinis and tapped their kegs, then the piranha strike. And strike. And strike. Blood flows, screams fly, terror reigns. So, know that. But, of course, that’s not all there is to keep in mind about the movie, which stars Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O’Connell, Jessica Szohr, Christopher Lloyd and Richard Dreyfuss. Here are five more things you need to know about “Piranha 3D.” There’s Equal Opportunity Nudity Much has been made of the film’s abundant nudity. Heck, even Aja himself has been bragging about all those “3-D double-D boobs.” But the men of Piranha get their fair amount of exposure, too — if not quite the same way. “The piranha go for the one defining feature on each of us that seems to tell everything about our character,” co-star Kelly Brook told us. “Jerry O’Connell’s character has a pretty unsightly situation with some piranhas and parts of his anatomy that will remain unspoken about on MTV.” We’ll let you guess which part of his anatomy — O’Connell’s character makes his living in the adult-entertainment industry — gets chomped on. It’s an Ode to the ’80s Sure, audiences have probably never seen anything that can be called a 3-D horror/comedy popcorn flick, but listen to anyone involved with “Piranha” and you’ll hear them talk as much about the cinematic past as the technological present. “It’s an ode to the ’80s,” Aja said .”I fell in love with the script for that reason. It’s like ‘Dead Alive’ and ‘Evil Dead.’ It’s ‘Gremlins’ for adults.” It Could be the Bloodiest Movie Ever The folks over at Guinness might want to take note: The “Piranha” filmmakers are convinced their movie is the bloodiest movie in cinematic history. “Over 600 gallons of blood were used in this movie so far, and we’re not even done,” co-star Paul Scheer told us when we visited the set. “This is gonna be the most boobs and blood in any motion picture of all time.” By the time the movie wrapped production, Aja bragged, “I think blood-wise, I have to get the final number, but we are beyond anything you can even imagine.” The 3-D Doesn’t Suck Who isn’t sick of unnecessary 3-D — a third dimension practically fastened on with glue and scotch tape? Here’s the thing about “Piranha 3D” : It looks pretty good. And that’s not because they shot it with 3-D cameras (the technical challenges of shooting on and in the water were simply too great to film “Avatar”-style). Aja used a painstaking post-production conversion process, and the results are worthy of applause. ” ‘Clash of the Titans’ and that last-minute conversion, forget it,” said Scheer. “[‘Piranha’] looks really rich and full.” Added O’Connell, “Alex Aja, who was our boss on this one, said, ‘I’m going to make a 3-D movie and I’m going to make a really good 3-D movie. So from the get-go, all the bits, all the gags, all the drama, is designed around 3-D. So if you’re a fan of 3-D, this is one you don’t have to groan about.” It’s Based on a True Story What, you don’t think a swarm of prehistoric piranhas ever chewed their way through a few thousand liquored-up college kids on spring break? Scheer will set you straight. “It’s based on a true story,” he deadpanned. So, um, add “biopic” to this delightful hodgepodge of genres, which include horror, comedy, date movie and nasty-marine-life-vs.-people flick. “Richard Dreyfuss didn’t even know he was shooting ‘Piranha,’ ” laughed Scheer. “He thought he was in the new ‘Jaws’ movie!” Check out everything we’ve got on “Piranha 3D.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Piranha 3D’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics cite ‘mayhem,’ ‘gore’ in new horror flick. By Eric Ditzian Jerry O’Connell in “Piranha 3D” Photo: Gene Page / Dimension What can a critic possibly say about a film whose director describes his creative approach thusly: “I understand why James Cameron in ‘Avatar’ didn’t want to make the 3-D gimmicky, and he was right. But we are making a piranha-attacking-spring-break movie, so we are going to go for the huge on-the-screen effects and fish attacking the audience.” That’s how Alexandre Aja explained “Piranha 3D” to us earlier this year. And his movie is either the type of cinematic experience you crave — buckets of blood, tons of silicone — or the type that you find emblematic of the unraveling of Western culture. Moviegoers in both camps should note that the film is not tracking particularly well and will be lucky to gross more than $10 million over the weekend. Yet the “Piranha 3D” reviews have been largely positive thus far; critics seem to understand that Aja wasn’t trying to make an awards-season darling (despite ). Check out what the pros are saying and decide whether or not this flick is for you. The Story “[T]here’s a lake packed with drunk hotties in bikinis they’re forever taking off. There are big piranha packs swarming. A few scientists stop by to throw in lines like ‘you’re not going to believe this.’ A few law enforcements types scream, ‘Get out of the water now.’ Mayhem everywhere, enough that the fake-blood and severed-limb budget was probably the film’s biggest expenditure. I’d try describing the gore, but words just can’t do justice to the damage a massive Mesozoic underbite, and the occasional outboard motor, can do.” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times The Direction “Alexandre Aja, who worked his remake magic with 2006’s atmospheric ‘The Hills Have Eyes,’ gets it mainly right, assisted by a lively CG boost and a game cast that really gets into the spirit of things. … [He] exhibits little patience for such stuff as dramatic tension and tautly coiled suspense, and there are some undeniable choppy bits— but he never loses sight of the potential fun factor laid out in Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg’s script. Nor does he stint on the gore, with a terrific assist by the veteran effects duo of Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger, who truly outdo themselves with all those nibbled body parts, as well as added bite by creature designer Neville Page.” — Michael Rechtshaffen, The Hollywood Reporter The Performances “The cast knows exactly what they’re doing, and Elizabeth Shue and Adam Scott both walk away winners. Scott in particular seems to be having indecent fun striking a few action hero poses and reacting with droll alarms to the monster fish. Christopher Lloyd shows up for what is really just an extended cameo, but every line out of his mouth gets a laugh just because of the general lack of Lloyd in our lives lately. Ving Rhames doesn’t have a lot to do, but he goes down swinging. O’Connell may never be able to convincingly shake off the scumbag after the enthusiastic way he and his cameraman (Paul Scheer of ‘Human Giant’ fame) ply their trade and earn their punishment. Even the young cast, led by Steven R. McQueen and Jessica Szohr, acquit themselves as well as possible considering how generally thin the material is.” — Drew McWeeny, HitFix The Gore “There’s no way you can talk about the film without going gore gaga over the main attack that hits during the wet t-shirt contest. I’m relatively positive that this film used more blood than any film in film history. I’m thinking elevator scene in ‘The Shining’ … times 3,000. More than that though was the crazy awesome gore by [effects studio] K.N.B. There’s crazy awesome make-up effects here that just don’t stop. For every moment that the CG fish get on your nerves, there’s six gore gags by K.N.B. that are just epic.” — Harry Knowles, Ain’t It Cool News The Bottom Line “[H]ere, in the best/worst traditions of ’70s exploitation cinema, are flesh-eating fishy gore, lip-smacking nudity and lots of laugh-out-loud silliness. If you’re looking for the anti-establishment message found in the John Sayles’ scripted, Roger Corman-produced ‘Jaws’ rip-off, you will be disappointed. However, the re-make’s cheesy, eye-popping 3-D effects — flayed bodies, naked breasts, vomit and a severed penis are all flung out of the screen — are an authentic, affectionate throwback to cheapo Cormanesque excess.” — Nigel Floyd, Time Out London Check out everything we’ve got on “Piranha 3D.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Joe Francis Not Happy That Piranha 3D Associates Him With Drugs, Underage Girls, Flying Penis

Piranha 3D star Jerry O’C onnell — who will now forever been known as the dude who lost his penis in Piranha 3D — has been fond of telling everyone that his Wild Wild Girls promoter in the film is based on Girls Gone Wild ‘s Joe Francis. Or, as he told The Daily Beast: “For legal reasons I’m supposed to say, ‘I play someone loosely based on Joe Francis.'” Not loosely enough, apparently. Joe Francis will not have his good name sullied by Piranha 3D — and he’s threatening a lawsuit.

‘Nanny McPhee Returns’ Star Used Snail Mail To Woo A-Listers

‘I always send the script with a nice letter,’ Emma Thompson says of casting Ralph Fiennes, Ewan McGregor. By Kara Warner Emma Thompson Photo: MTV News Despite her less than comely appearance, the magic-wielding Nanny McPhee delighted audiences enough in 2005 for her to make a second trip to theaters in this week’s “Nanny McPhee Returns.” When MTV News caught up with the film’s star and screenwriter, Emma Thompson, she told us that taking on dual roles is “hugely satisfying.” She also had no complaints about the hours spent in the makeup chair, calling them a reward for having spent a “few years writing the story.” The story is kid-centric and full of fantasy-like surprises — piglets that perform a synchronized swimming routine in a pond, a baby elephant and goat that spend a night in children’s beds — and boasts appearances by esteemed actors Ralph Fiennes and Ewan McGregor. When we asked Thompson how she managed to snag the two busy men for the film, the Oscar-winner said it all came down to a simple exchange of favors. “Well, you know, just one or two quite simple sexual favors, and that was it,” Thompson joked. “Not much [effort was required], really. Not bad, they were very generous,” she laughed, adding, “I should be so lucky, quite frankly.” The real story is that Thompson used good old-fashioned snail mail. “I always send the script with a nice letter, ‘Look, you know, if you fancy it, would you?’ And they both said yes immediately,” Thompson explained. “I’m very grateful to them because they’re both wonderful.” Thompson also dished about how both she and Fiennes had appeared in at least one “Harry Potter” film , a feat that seemed to have been accomplished by every working actor in the U.K. Thompson plays kooky sometimes-psychic Professor Trelawney. “Absolutely everyone in equity has been in it,” she joked of the franchise’s lengthy cast list. “Including all my family, practically, my sister just finished. I don’t know what the name of her character is; she’s got a major role in this last one.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Nanny McPhee Returns.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Remember When J.J. Abrams Confessed His Mel Gibson Man-Crush?

Seriously : Movieline’s Vault is hiding some serious magic from 1992 . How about what I presume is the first in-depth profile of J.J. Abrams , then 26 and rich from his screenplays for Regarding Henry and the Mel Gibson vehicle Forever Young ? And maybe a tad too candid with journalists: “Well, I know this is gonna sound crazy, but Mel is just so f*cking good-looking that you can’t believe it. He has a really funny personality, and you find that you can forget that he’s this mega-movie star when you’re with him. But the truth is, I spent a lot of time just staring into his eyes.” It always starts so innocently. [ Movieline ]
