Newt Gingrich, Carpetbagger For God, Made a Movie About the Pope

Not the current pope, alas, who could actually use some conservative hagiographical spin right about now, but the previous pope — John Paul II, whose efforts to combat totalitarianism through faith are chronicled in the Gingrich-produced documentary Nine Days That Changed the World . The former House Speaker and Georgia Republican has traveled with the film to the late pope’s homeland of Poland, where he spoke Wednesday of the political change that Catholicism can effect under Communist regimes in Cuba and China. And, one can only presume, in America, where the film will make the university rounds this fall just in time to combat the Obama-flavored socialist scourge jockeying for public office. Hold it just a second, Newt — I thought you were a Baptist ?

Will Taylor Lautner Be Shirtless In ‘Abduction’? Lily Collins Thinks So

‘I’m sure they’ll work out something to make sure he does [lose his shirt] at some point,’ she laughs to MTV News. By Larry Carroll, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Lilly Collins Photo: Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — At this point in Taylor Lautner’s young career, two things are clear: There is a hunger to see him in movies outside the “Twilight” franchise, and Hollywood is all-too-eager to give the fast-rising leading man work. Over the weekend, as Taylor worked the MTV Movie Awards crowd with his formidable charm and trademark smile, his next leading lady was eager to talk about the film they’re about to shoot together. “I’m off shooting this summer for ‘Abduction’ with Taylor Lautner ,” said 21-year-old Lily Collins, most recently seen in the Oscar-winning film “The Blind Side,” on the Lautner project often described as a younger Jason Bourne movie. “It will be a thriller with action, lots of stunts.” Sigourney Weaver recently signed on to the high-profile flick, which will be Lautner’s first true post-“Twilight” performance (we’d count “Valentine’s Day,” but we blinked and missed him). Directed by John Singleton, Lautner stars as a teen who stumbles upon his baby picture on a missing-persons website — setting off a massive quest to find his true identity. “Three months of hanging out with Taylor,” grinned the stunning Collins, dripping with sarcasm. “I don’t know what I’m going to do!” But in the minds of many Twilighters, there’s only one important question that needs to be answered before they fork over their hard-earned money for a ticket: Will Taylor be displaying that now-famous torso of his? “I’m sure they’ll work out something to make sure he does [lose his shirt] at some point,” Collins admitted. “Which everyone would totally hate, right?” A few moments later, Taylor would take the stage alongside his “Twilight” co-stars to unveil an exclusive “Eclipse” scene and pick up a few Golden Popcorns as well. Many in the crowd would have gladly given up their black T-shirts for a chance to meet TayCob, and soon enough, Lily will be working alongside him for months. But, as she told us, they’re already tight. “We’re friends,” she said. The 9 Best Shots from the Second, Ridiculous Showgirls 2 Trailer

Back in February, we brought you 9 compelling images from the first trailer for Showgirls 2 , an unauthorized, insane semi-sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s camp classic that appeared to have been cobbled together from B-roll, spare footage of naked ladies writhing around, and sheer chutzpah. Now director Marc Vorlander has released a second trailer (and the film has been retitled to Showgirls Exposed , because duh, copyright issues) and it is so joy-inducing that it made me clap my hands together several times like I was either a seal or Paula Abdul. Let’s get right down to it: here are the 9 best stills from this new masterpiece, and then the trailer at the end.

‘Shrek Forever After’ Tops Box Office For Third Straight Weekend

Second-place finisher ‘Get Him to the Greek’ was best of the new releases. By Josh Wigler “Shrek Forever After” Photo: Marco Garcia/ Getty Images The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Shrek Forever After” ($25.3 million) #2 “Get Him to the Greek” ($17.4 million) #3 “Killers” ($16.1 million) #4 “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” ($13.9 million) #5 “Sex and the City 2” ($12.7 million) Even with four major new releases hitting theaters this weekend, box-office supremacy remained in the clutches of the mean green ogre known as Shrek. “Shrek Forever After,” the franchise’s fourth installment, topped the charts with a $25.3 million haul from Friday through Sunday, marking the film’s third consecutive weekend victory. Of the weekend’s new releases, “Get Him to the Greek” performed the best. The raunchy comedy stars Jonah Hill as a young talent agent and Russell Brand as Aldous Snow, the troubled rock star first introduced in 2008’s “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” “Greek” managed a respectable $17.4 million haul, nearly halving its reported $40 million production budget. Although “Greek” wasn’t able to best “Shrek,” it did manage to defeat “Killers,” the spy-themed romantic comedy starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl as a married couple drawn into the deadly world of espionage. The film earned a third-place finish worth $16.1 million. The weekend’s other major new releases, “Marmaduke” and “Splice,” stayed out of the top five altogether with sixth- and eighth-place finishes, respectively. It’s a particularly disappointing finish for the Owen Wilson-starring “Marmaduke,” as the family film was the widest new release of the weekend by a significant margin of over 300 theaters. Rounding out fourth and fifth place were last weekend’s “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” and “Sex and the City 2.” Upcoming Releases Action is the name of the game next weekend as the Bradley Cooper-starring “The A-Team” and the remake of “The Karate Kid” enter the box-office arena. Check out everything we’ve got on “Shrek Forever After” and “Get Him to the Greek.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Will Ferrell Weighs In On Sandra And Scarlett’s MTV Movie Awards Kiss

‘The Other Guys’ star says the smooch between ‘Sandra and Charlotte’ was one of the high points of the night. By Todd Gilchrist, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Scarlett Johannson and Sandra Bullock at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards Photo: MTV When he could remember the names of the actresses involved, actor Will Ferrell told MTV News that he thought that the surprise kiss between Generation Award recipient Sandra Bullock and presenter Scarlett Johansson was one of the evening’s high points. When asked what he enjoyed seeing the most during the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, he said, “I can say Sandra Bullock and Charlotte,” meaning Scarlett Johansson. Unflappable even in the face of the gaffe, Ferrell nodded and corrected himself. “Scarlett Johansson. She goes by Charlotte, though — she usually drops the ‘S.’ ” After being presented with her Generation Award, recipient Sandra Bullock shared an unexpected lip-lock with Scarlett Johansson during her acceptance speech. Truth be told, their smooch actually legitimized Johansson’s spot on the stage alongside fellow presenters Bradley Cooper and Betty White — after declining to say anything during the Generation presentation, Johansson finally admitted she was there in place of “The Proposal” star Ryan Reynolds, who was nominated alongside Bullock for Best Kiss, and she and Bullock initiated an impromptu make-out session in response to, well, losing the award. Even without the kiss, the presentation of Bullock’s Generation Award was unquestionably one of the highlights of the show. As Johansson deferred to her co-presenters, Cooper provided a litany of weird nicknames for his “All About Steve” co-star, and then stepped aside as White recounted many of the movies in Bullock’s storied career, albeit wildly inaccurately. Bullock’s gracious and funny acceptance speech paid homage to her collaborations with Cooper and White, made light of her recent personal woes and then she petitioned attendees and viewers to go back to making fun of her. During his own appearance, however, Ferrell and his “The Other Guys” co-star Mark Wahlberg hung above the Movie Awards stage in a suitably awkward recreation of the film’s advertising campaign while their fellow castmembers Eva Mendez, Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson presented the award for Best Villain. Wahlberg was outraged when Tom Fenton, Harry Potter’s Draco Malfoy, thanked an extensive list of supporters, friends and family. Ferrell, meanwhile, offered a few unsolicited comments about the growing pain in his groin from the harness that held him in the air. ‘Last Airbender’ Clip Premieres On MTV Movie Awards

Footage, featuring Nicola Peltz and Jackson Rathbone, promises spectacular set-up for M. Night Shyamalan adaptation. By Todd Gilchrist Dev Patel in “The Last Airbender” Photo: Paramount Pictures Last year, M. Night Shyamalan took the helm of “The Last Airbender,” a live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon’s popular animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” and a new clip from the film premiered on tonight’s MTV Movie Awards. While it remains to be seen whether the film will feature one of the writer/ director’s trademark twist endings, the footage fans are seeing promises nothing short of a spectacular set-up for an epic franchise. The clip opens with a shot of Katara (Nicola Peltz) and Sokka (“Twilight” star Jackson Rathbone) as they trudge through a snowy landscape. The pair emerges onto a frozen lake where something lurks ominously beneath them in the water below. After Sokka strikes the ice, a ball rises before them and a bolt of energy erupts from the top of it. Although it’s not entirely clear whether the Airbender himself pops out of that big ball of icy energy, as he lands center screen, a disembodied voice tells him, “Airbender, only you have the power to master all of the elements and save us all.” While such an observation would certainly offer anyone else an unwanted amount of pressure, Airbender promptly responds by kicking the tar out of seemingly everyone in his path, using the four elements — air, water, fire and earth — to dispatch adversaries and generally look like a total badass. And when those elements don’t do the job, Airbender’s got a freaking spear just for added measure. Of course, you’ll have to see if Airbender is truly the last of his kind, and perhaps more importantly, if he is the last man standing, when the movie arrives in theaters on July 2. But in the meantime, check out everything MTV has on “The Last Airbender,” as well as a lot of other new movies coming to theaters soon! Tune in right now to catch the red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles. Russell Brand talks his way to Hollywood stardom

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Unlike most emerging Hollywood stars, there’s nothing Russell Brand won’t talk about. At 34, he’s practically already said and done it all. The British, brash, self-confessed former sex, heroin and crack addict, whose pranks and antics included being forced to resign as a BBC radio host after lewd phone calls, is now rising through the ranks of Hollywood movie stars in roles that show off his famous, fast-talking ways. This week he tests out his first major starring role on U.S. movie audiences in “Get Him to the Greek,” which gives top billing to his old role as music pop star Aldous Snow from the 2008 film “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” It opens in U.S. theaters on Friday. Brand says the character, who in the film takes a naive record label intern on a hedonistic descent into the world of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, reminds him of his dark and wild days chronicled in his irreverent 2007 memoir “My Booky Wook.” “It’s like being able to, for a very brief stint, live out the dark fantasies of the past that were troublesome to actually live the first time,” he told Reuters in his usual tongue-in-cheek tone in a recent interview. “Get Him to the Greek” — a spin-off of sorts from “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” in which the Aldous Snow character was only one part of a broader story — co-stars Jonah Hill as the intern (Aaron Green) who struggles to take Snow from London to Los Angeles for a concert at the city’s Greek Theater. Along the way, the pair get into tricky escapades and, of course, learn what is truly important in life. DRAMATIC AND EMOTIONAL While the role of Snow takes full advantage of Brand’s comic reputation and while audiences may see him as merely an attention seeker, Brand is a classically trained actor. He said that, at least for “a little while,” he would be happy to carve out a career like Adam Sandler or Jack Black. Brand will appear opposite Oscar winner Helen Mirren in a film version of “The Tempest” and is set to remake the 1981 Dudley Moore comedy “Arthur,” about a wealthy man who refuses to grow up, also alongside Mirren. He studied at London’s Drama Center, and although he jokes about it — “you know, take your clothes off, start crying. That type of school” — he seems able to easily express the emotions needed to be an actor. In his memoir Brand was candid in detailing a troubled childhood in industrial Essex, England, as well as various sex and drug-filled adventures in the underbelly of London before landing a hosting gig at youth-oriented MTV. “I am still a very emotionally visceral, volatile man, tumultuous to the end, forever flinging out feelings. I am not at all spent,” he said. “There is still a craving, a yearning.” He has now left London for Los Angeles, and said he intends to marry his girlfriend, pop star Katy Perry, this year. That relationship has made Brand and Perry fodder for the celebrity tabloids, which he despairs. “It’s a horror to be in the tabloids,” Brand said. “I don’t mind intelligent analysis, but what can we do? We live spellbound in a cyclical bubble of senseless illusions.” In real-life, Brand often likes to quote French philosopher Michel Foucault, and he cites Richard Pryor, Gandhi, P.G. Wodehouse, Oscar Wilde and Dorothy Parker as among his heroes. He says he practices daily meditation, ashtanga yoga, a 12-step recovery program to stave off addictions and ultimately, he wants “to make all people connected through spiritual magnetism.” As for money, fame and glory, “it’s nice to have them,” he said. “But on the horizon there is something valuable to pursue, and I don’t think it’s about the acquisition of wealth.” (Editing by Bob Tourtellotte and Alex Dobuzinskis)
