8 Milestones in the Evolution of Mark Wahlberg

After a quick foray into comedy with this summer’s The Other Guys , Mark Wahlberg returns to drama this month in The Fighter . He stars as Mickey Ward, a tough-luck Boston boxer with a domineering mother/manager (Melissa Leo) and a brother/trainer (Christian Bale) who once knocked down Sugar Ray Leonard before becoming a crackhead. Alert Oscar! But how did Wahlberg become an Academy Award-nominated actor from his roots as a hip-hop artist who lead the infamous Funky Bunch? You can always trace a direct line through a handful of roles (not necessarily his best roles, mind you) to illustrate what led to an star’s current success, and with Wahlberg, that line might be as high as it’s ever been. Let’s look at eight performances that trace the evolution of one Mark Robert Michael Wahlberg.

Mark Wahlberg Gives Thanks For ‘The Fighter,’ ‘The Other Guys’ In 2010

He’s also thankful for ‘Boardwalk Empire’ — and we’re thankful for him. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Mark Wahlberg Photo: MTV News Next up on our short list of people for whom we’re most thankful this year: Mark Wahlberg . Certain generations will always remember him as Marky Mark from his days of “Good Vibrations” and Calvin Klein underwear ads. But in the last decade, Wahlberg has emerged as one of the industry’s most savvy and bankable players. In 2010, we were introduced to a new side of Wahlberg — his comedic timing — which he showcased by way of “Date Night,” “The Other Guys” and MTV’s own “The Knife Show.” Behind the screen, Wahlberg teamed up with heavyweights Martin Scorsese and Terrence Winter (“The Sopranos”) to bring “Boardwalk Empire” to HBO. He also produced and stars in “The Fighter.” The man has been busy, and we’re happy about it. MTV : You’re one of the people we’re most thankful for. Has this year been particularly better than others? Mark Wahlberg : It has. Every year above ground was a special year. Professionally, things couldn’t be better. Personally, my kids are healthy — aside from my youngest having a double ear infection. My wife is healthy and happy and everything is good, so really I’m so blessed and so fortunate. We’ve had a chance to talk and play around, but I’m not one of these guys who feels, like, entitled to be in this position. I feel so grateful and so humble. I’ve obviously worked very hard, it’s been an amazing journey, but if it ended today, I would be happy because I was on the ride. MTV : Is there a highlight from this year? Wahlberg : I would have to say between the movie stuff and the television stuff — with “Boardwalk Empire” premiering, “The Other Guys” did so well. Getting to go do a comedy at the beginning of this year with Seth McFarlane, his directorial debut. I’m so excited, it’s off-the-charts funny. MTV : Tell me about “Teddy Bear,” because it sounds absurd and amazing at the same time. Wahlberg : I don’t know how much he wants me to tell, but it’s about this kid who gets a bear for Christmas, it’s in the ’70s, it’s one of those Teddy Ruxpin-ish bears where you squeeze it and it says, “I love you!” The kid wishes and dreams that the bear would come alive, and a Christmas wish must be granted and it does. And Seth McFarlane is voicing the bear, but the bear is going to look like a little teddy bear, but it’s motion-capture, like “Avatar.” It’s never been done before. It’s insane. What the bear does is just … MTV : An R-rated comedy? I assume when Seth McFarlane is involved … Wahlberg : Yeah. The bear becomes famous, and then that’s my ticket to getting things and living a life of privilege. MTV : How satisfying was it for you to finally make “The Fighter”? Wahlberg : Just to be able to get the movie made was such an uphill battle. I was so happy we got it made, and then the fact that we were able to make a great movie and, I think, the best possible version of the movie. There were so many times where I thought I would make the movie just to get it done, but it happened for the right reasons. MTV : Do you have plans to direct? Wahlberg : I want to direct, but I don’t want to direct myself in a movie, because then it becomes about directing my performance. I don’t have the ability to be that kind of multitasker. Producing was tough enough. But in the future, I’d like to take a crack at it. MTV : What’s next? You’ve talked about “Cocaine Cowboys.” Wahlberg : Yeah, probably right now. And then there’s this other thing, “Broken City,” that I want to do at the end of next year with Allen Hughes directing, which is on the Black List. [ Editor’s note: The Black List is a compendium of unproduced screenplays that different studios/readers have given high marks to. ] It’s one of the best unproduced screenplays, an amazing piece of material that should attract amazing talent. … Hopefully “Fighter” will make it a little easier to get some of these passion projects off the ground. MTV : What kind of film is “Broken City”? Wahlberg : Crime, mystery. It’s in the vein of those old classics, “Chinatown,” even “L.A. Confidential.” Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it’s about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Young Money’s Mack Maine Debuts ‘I’m From New Orleans’ Video

MTV Jams’ ‘Louisiana Love’ day is paying tribute on the five-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. By Shaheem Reid Mack Maine Photo: MTV News As we reflect on the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina , MTV Jams is paying special tribute to survivors of the disaster with “Louisiana Love.” All Sunday (August 29) on the channel, you’ll see videos from New Orleans artists. MTV Jams is celebrating the strength of the people in the Gulf Coast rather than making it a day of mourning. One of the videos fans will see today is courtesy of director Scoob Doo and the Young Money family. It’s called “I’m From New Orleans” and stars YM president Mack Maine . Fellow N.O. natives Lil Wayne, Lil Chuckee and the Birdman have cameos in the vid. “The New Orleans video is basically a song with some guys from New Orleans: Lucci Lou and T@,” Mack explained to MTV News. Mack Mizzle was in New York to visit Lil Wayne at Rikers Island. “The name of the song is ‘I’m From New Orleans.’ I got pretty New Orleans on my verse. The video is pretty raw. It’s low-budget, capturing the raw and real of New Orleans. It’s a good look. It’ll make the city proud and kinda let other people see our heritage and basically how we live, our way of life.” The Cash Money/ Young Money family obviously has a well-documented history of showing us New Orleans in videos, starting back in the ’90s with such videos as Juvenile’s “Ha” and five years ago with Lil Wayne’s “Fireman.” However, since Katrina’s destruction hit, many of the signature landmarks are no longer standing in the city. “I was just in town for my birthday party, and I rode through the neighborhoods to see the new developments that are coming up and what’s being torn down,” Mack said. “A lot of the uptown part, the projects are basically gone, like the Magnolia, some of the Calliope are still up. They’re trying to give the city a new face. It’s a lot of memories gone at the end of the day. But we basically shot uptown, we caught the Superdome. Uptown, my little brother has a house. We caught some footage by him. We caught some of Hollygrove. The guys on the song are from New Orleans East. So we caught the East in there too. We tried to capture all the city. I don’t think we went on the West Bank, but shouts to the West Bank as well. Uptown, downtown and the East.” Mack says his song co-stars, Lucci Lou and T@, have worked with the YM family before, and the two are just stepping up to the spotlight now. “Lucci Lou, he was on the No Ceilings mixtape,” Mack explained. “T@ is one of the guys who works for Wayne. He started messing around with the rap and started making beats. That’s how the song came. He hit me when we was in the studio. He hit me, like, ‘Pull up some of the beats we made on the I Am Music Tour.’ I don’t write; I freestyle. I went in there and went from the verse to the hook. I didn’t know if it was nice at first. It was like 5 in the morning. I was tired. They called me like, ‘It’s a hit.’ I listened to it two days later and said, ‘It’s a nice song.’ They did their verse, and here we are.” Share your memories of Hurricane Katrina in the comments.

‘Last Exorcism,’ ‘Takers’ In Close Race For Top Spot

‘Takers’ is only an estimated $300,000 behind ‘Exorcism’ at box office. By Mawuse Ziegbe Ashley Bell in “The Last Exorcism” Photo: Lionsgate The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Last Exorcism” ($21.3 million) #2 “Takers” ($21 million) #3 “The Expendables” ($9.5 million) #4 “Eat Pray Love” ($7 million) #5 “The Other Guys” ($6.6 million) “The Last Exorcism” is fighting to the last minute for the top spot at the weekend box office. The supernatural thriller is set to pull in $21.3 million since landing in theaters on Friday. However, the gangster flick “Takers” is right behind the horror-fest with $21 million. According to reports , the star-packed heist movie could overtake “Exorcism” when final box-office numbers come in on Monday. Exorcism,” starring Patrick Fabian and Ashley Bell, initially appeared ready to nab the weekend crown when the flick “easily outpaced “Takers” at the Friday box office with $9.4 million. “Takers,” which touts an all-star cast that includes chart-topping artists T.I. and Chris Brown alongside British actor Idris Elba, debuted with $7.5 million. Holding steady in third place is the explosive, ensemble action romp “The Expendables.” After ruling the box office for two weeks, the macho flick couldn’t fend off the sturdy theater draw of new releases “Exorcism” and “Takers,” and raked in $9.5 million. “Eat Pray Love” and “The Other Guys” round out the top five. Theatergoers are still falling for the tropical romance and midlife introspection of the Ryan Murphy-directed “Love” which made $7 million over the weekend. Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg continue to rake in laughs as a mismatched cop duo in “The Other Guys,” which scored $6.6 million at the box office. The re-release of James Cameron’s sci-fi juggernaut “Avatar” didn’t make the box-office top ten. A revisited version of the record-shattering fantasy adventure, which features almost ten minutes of new footage, pulled in $4 million. ‘Last Exorcism’ Tops Friday Box Office

‘Takers’ with T.I. and Chris Brown nabs second place. By Mawuse Ziegbe Ashley Bell in “The Last Exorcism” Photo: Lionsgate The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Last Exorcism” ($9.4 million) #2 “Takers” ($7.5 million) #3 “The Expendables” ($2.7 million) #4 “Eat Pray Love” ($ 2.2 million) #5 “The Other Guys” ($1.9 million) “The Last Exorcism” scared up major ticket sales on its opening day. The supernatural horror flick raked in an estimated $9.4 million on Friday. “Exorcism,” which is directed by Daniel Stamm and boasts gore-master Eli Roth of the “Hostel” series fame as a producer, drew enough moviegoers to grab the top spot. The film, which follows a documentary crew in rural Louisiana hired to capture the creepy antics of a supposedly possessed young girl, goes light on digital wizardry in favor of scoring scares with practical effects. In the second place slot is the star-studded heist flick “Takers.” T.I., Chris Brown, Idris Elba, Hayden Christensen and Matt Dillon work the screen in a story about a crew of suave thieves set to carry out a major job. The thriller snatched $7.5 million in Friday ticket sales. Sliding to third place is the heavily-armed action fest “The Expendables.” The fiery, butt-kicking flick raised $2.7 million on Friday, after ruling the box office for the past two weeks and sitting comfortably at the top spot. Friday’s haul edges the total domestic tally of the Sylvester Stallone-helmed enterprise near the $75 million mark. “Eat Pray Love,” featuring marquee vet Julia Roberts, settled into fourth place. The soul-searching movie adapted from the runaway hit memoir of the same name, nabbed $2.2 million in box office receipts on Friday. The loopy cop comedy “The Other Guys” continues to power along, taking in $1.9 million and rounding out Friday’s top movies in the fifth-place slot. Although “Avatar” wears the crown for the highest-grossing film ever, the re-release of the James Cameron adventure, revamped with previously unreleased footage, failed to crack the top ten with only $1.2 million in Friday ticket sales. The Sylvester Stallone ode to macho action movies has raked in a total of $64.9 million throughout its two-week run in theaters. “Vampires Suck” lagged behind “Expendables” with $12.2 million. The horror spoof, which takes several shots at pop-culture’s current fascination with smoldering, mortal-loving vampires, took the second-place slot. The film has stacked $18.6 million in ticket receipts since the comedy hit theaters on Wednesday. “Eat Pray Love” continued to cull a steady stream of theatergoers with a weekend draw of $12 million. “Vampires” just barely fended off the Julia Roberts vehicle, which settled into third place during its second week on screens. The weekend bumps “Love” ‘s total gross to $47.1 million. Boasting a rap-friendly cast, “Lottery Ticket” took fourth place during its debut weekend. The comedy, which features hip-hop star Bow Wow as a young fella forced to bat away hangers-on after he lands a winning lotto ticket, rang up $11.1 million in ticket scans. “The Other Guys” maintained a healthy presence at theaters, besting three new flicks for a top-five slot. The Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg cop comedy pulled in $10.1 million, bringing its overall haul to $88.2 million. In a weekend packed with new movies, three debuts failed to crack the top five. “Piranha 3D” nipped at “Guys” heels with $10 million for sixth place while “Nanny McPhee Returns” and “The Switch” struggled through the weekend with $8.3 million and $8.1 million, respectively. The cop comedy “The Other Guys,” armed with an all-star cast that includes Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, dropped off to third place with $9 million after bowing at the top spot last week. “Scott Pilgrim v. The World,” which follows funnyman Michael Cera as he clashes with his girlfriend’s army of ex-lovers in several video game-themed scuffles, took fourth place with $5.7 million. The Christopher Nolan juggernaut “Inception” is still captivating moviegoers, taking in $3.4 million to land in fifth place. Friday’s haul tips the film’s total domestic gross over the $240 million mark. “Step Up 3D,” which features dancers such as Alyson Stoner and Stephan Boss in the third installment in the footwork franchise, failed to crack the top 5 in its second week in theaters. The dance movie took in $2.3 million last night with “Despicable Me” not far behind with $2.2 million. Both movies were closely followed by the Steve Carell-Paul Rudd vehicle “Dinner for Schmucks” which brought in $2 million. The action thriller “Salt,” featuring a raven-haired Angelina Jolie as a spy on the run, picked up $1.8 million.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Expendables,” “Eat Pray Love” and “The Other Guys.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com.
