Michael Douglas’ Family, Peers Pick His Best Role At Lincoln Center Event

Catherine Zeta-Jones, Kirk Douglas, Tobey Maguire, Brooke Shields and others honor the actor. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Michael Douglas Photo: MTV News Each year, the Film Society of Lincoln Center honors a Hollywood legend. Last year’s gala event feted Tom Hanks , while years past have focused on Meryl Streep, Al Pacino and Francis Ford Coppola. At Lincoln Center on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, 2010 is the year of Michael Douglas . On Monday night, Douglas and his four-decade-long career were front and center, and the actor’s friends, family and colleagues showed up for the celebration. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Kirk Douglas, Tobey Maguire, Brooke Shields, Danny DeVito and more were on hand for the festivities and to cast their votes for Douglas’ finest movie role ever. Even Douglas himself weighed in on the debate. “You work as hard on your failures as on your successes,” he said. “I’d say tonight, particularly because [director] Curtis [Hanson] is here, I liked ‘Wonder Boys’ a lot. ‘Solitary Man’ is right up there. I’m real happy with my batting average. I look at the rest, and it’s pretty good. You pick your spots.” Zeta-Jones, Douglas’ wife, also favors Hanson’s film, in which Douglas plays a novelist undone by pot smoking and creative indecision. “I don’t think ‘Wonder Boys’ had the credit it really deserved,” she said. “It’s a wonderful movie, it really is, and a great performance by everybody.” DeVito, who has known Douglas for decades, couldn’t help but pick a film in which both men starred. ” ‘The War of the Roses,’ he was brilliant,” DeVito said. “I’m a little biased, but I think without a doubt, Oliver Rose was one of his best parts.” Co-stars from across Douglas’ film career were walking the red carpet, including from one of his most celebrated films, “Traffic.” But Erika Christensen, who played his drug-addicted daughter in that movie, didn’t select that role as her fave of Douglas’ career. “I’m going to say Gordon Gekko, because it was instantly iconic,” Christensen said of Douglas’ role in “Wall Street.” “And that says a lot about how he played the role, not just how it was written. So quotable. That’s something special for an actor to make that indelible mark on the pop culture.” Brooke Shields, meanwhile, veered away from fiction when it came to her favorite Douglas role. “Honestly, and this is going to be so saccharine and gross, but him as the man that I know, as a dad and a husband, that’s what makes my knees weak,” she said. The 20-year-old actress is about to jump into globe-trotting publicity mode as the June 30 release of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” draws near. Now, her August is fully booked as well: KStew is set to being filming “On the Road” early that month in Montreal. According to the Montreal Gazette, the film will begin shooting on August 2 in Quebec’s largest city. Producers have already set up an office at Cite du Cinema, the city’s largest film production facility. After filming there for most of August, the shoot will shift to New Orleans for a month, then head to Mexico for a few weeks and finally return to Montreal before wrapping. Adapted from the iconic 1957 Beat generation novel by Jack Kerouac, “On the Road” stars Garrett Hedlund (“Tron Legacy”) as Dean Moriarty, the disaffected drifter at the center of the story. Stewart will play Marylou, Dean’s wife. Filling out the rest of the cast are Kirsten Dunst and British actor Sam Riley (“Control”). Francis Ford Coppola is producing, and Walter Salles (“The Motorcycle Diaries”) will direct. “I am very much attached to a movie that has been trying to get made forever,” Stewart said earlier this month. “Not that this is going to help it, but maybe I can just brag a little bit. I am super excited about it, too. I am about to play Marylou in ‘On the Road.’ So that’s a big deal.” The shoot should end well in advance of the start of “Breaking Dawn” filming this fall. The fourth film in the “Twilight” franchise will hit theaters on November 18, 2011. Do you think “On the Road” will make a good movie? Share your thoughts in the comments. Christina Aguilera Postpones Summer Tour

Singer has pushed dates back to 2011 to concentrate on promoting Bionic. By Gil Kaufman Christina Aguilera Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images You’re going to have to wait until next year to see Christina Aguilera live. The singer announced on Monday that she was calling off plans for an already announced summer tour to promote her upcoming Bionic album and pushing the dates back to an unspecified time in 2011. Citing a busy schedule that includes her involvement in the film “Burlesque” (in theaters this November) and promotional duties for the June 8 release of her new album, Bionic — which leaked onto the Internet on Monday — Aguilera’s camp issued a statement about the postponement. “The singer felt she needed more time to rehearse the show and with less than a month between the album release and tour dates this wasn’t possible,” it reads. New dates for the tour are expected later this year. A spokesperson for tour promoter Live Nation could not be reached for additional comment at press time. The tour was slated to kick off on July 15 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, and wrap up on August 19 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, California, and was to feature opening act Leona Lewis. The singer’s first new album since 2006’s Back to Basics has gotten off to a modest start, with first single “Not Myself Tonight” peaking at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100. The accompanying transgressive video has stirred up controversy due to claims by Lady Gaga supporters that it borrows some of the reigning pop diva’s signature moves. Your best chance to see Aguilera in the meantime is to tune in to Wednesday night’s “American Idol” finale and the June 6 MTV Movie Awards , where she is also scheduled to perform. Man Wrongfully Imprisoned for Decades Happy to Start Relearning Life

Man wrongfully imprisoned for decades happy to start relearning life By Rich Phillips, CNN May 24, 2010 8:43 p.m. EDT Tampa, Florida (CNN) — Meeting 54-year-old James Bain, the one thing that stands out is that the smile never seems to leave his face. He appears happy and positive, and the bitterness that might be buried inside a man who was wrongly sent to prison for 35 years is nowhere to be found. “I kind of see myself as a man of God and being like Joseph,” he said. “In a sense, I feel like a bear, coming out of hibernation. Like, they come out to eat, mine would be coming out to enjoy what I have missed.” Bain has missed a lot. His life was returned to him and his family in December, when a Florida judge freed him after DNA testing proved he did not kidnap and rape a 9-year-old boy in 1974 in Lake Wales, Florida. With the help of the Innocence Project, a national public policy organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted people through DNA tests, Bain left a Florida courtroom and entered a world he had left a lifetime ago. He is now on the outside, in a world that has changed technologically and socially, and one in which he must now learn how to live — again. “I've been planning on going back to school, and getting ready to take my driving test again, and hoping to get a motorcycle license,” Bain said. In the backyard of his mother's home in Tampa, Florida, Bain said that he'd like to tour the country on his motorcycle. CNN spoke with him amidst grapefruit and orange trees that weren't even planted when he went to prison so many years ago. “You spend 35 years in prison, and just the little things, like a grapefruit tree or an orange tree … those had vanished for me,” he said. “I never thought I'd get a chance to see another one of these.” The past six months have been a whirlwind, and Bain has become a celebrity. He was brought to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by the Martin Luther King Jr. Association for Nonviolence to ring the Liberty Bell on Martin Luther King day. When it was revealed that his favorite movie was “Titanic,” the owners of the Orlando, Florida, exhibit “Titanic — the Experience” invited him and his family to spend the day at the site, where characters from the movie tell the story of the sunken vessel. Noting the movie symbolized hope and strength for him while in prison, Bain said the film sends chills through his body. “To me, it means love and care for what you feel about other persons, like my sisters and mother. I think about that key word from 'Titanic,' 'Don't ever let go,' ” Bain said. Bain was invited to Orlando by Lowell Lytle, the man who portrays the Titanic's captain, Edward Smith. Lytle was touched by the torment James experienced while wrongly imprisoned. “It just hit me how horrible that must have been. That man's youth was taken away from him,” Lytle said. “I thought, I need to do something to help this man. If I can bring a smile to his face … to be able to take him through this exhibit here, and take him through an experience he will remember forever, that was fun for me.” During the past six months, Bain also has spoken to church groups and organizations. “I try to show whoever I'm speaking to about choices. That's my key word. Choice. Only you can make it because you have to live with it,” he said. “My choice was snatched. … It was taken from me. They didn't leave me no alternative. It's like the old saying, the right place at the wrong time.” But Bain insists that he's not bitter. He said he believes he's returned to a better society — a better country than the one he left in 1974. He points to the fact that an African-American was elected president. “I saw a big difference when the president changed, which I never dreamed would happen,” he said. “To see that change, that goes to show me, now, that there's a lot of good that we've done in this country.” Bain has been living with his mother in Tampa. He's been paid to speak in a couple of places, money that will help tide him over until his big payday. He and his attorneys have filed with the state of Florida for the restitution that Bain is entitled to — $50,000 for every year he spent behind bars, for a total of $1.75 million. That's a lot of money to most of us, but not nearly enough to make up for 35 years, Bain said. “Not even if they gave me $100 million,” he said. “Even if they gave me that, it still wouldn't replace what I lost.” He said it's the money that's keeping him on his guard — and is one reason why he doesn't yet have a girlfriend. “I just don't want no woman to want me for my money, to be honest with you,” he said. “… You don't know what they have planned.” added by: EthicalVegan

Tony Yayo Says He’s ‘Definitely A Bad Guy’ In ‘S.W.A.T. 2’

‘Having a guy like 50 Cent as a friend is a big advantage,’ he says of G-Unit honcho helping him land part. By Shaheem Reid Tony Yayo Photo: MTV News Tony Yayo says he will be billed as “Tony Yayo” not Marvin Bernard, his government name, when the credits roll on his feature film debut. The most energetic member of the G-Unit will get his shot at the big screen come 2011, when “S.W.A.T.: Fire Fight” hits theaters. “My part got edited [out],” Yayo laughed about his cameo in 50 Cent’s 90-minute film “Before I Self Destruct.” “I ain’t mad at you, 50. Having a guy like 50 Cent as a friend is a big advantage.” Fif recently put in the call to director Benny Boom, so that his close friend could get a look in the sequel to 2003’s “S.W.A.T.” “Shout out to 50, shout out to Benny Boom,” Yayo said last week during a visit to the MTV offices. “Shout out to my man Lucky. I just feel fortunate. 50 is in the movie world. They’re doing their thing in Hollywood with Cheetah Vision [Films]. They just shot a movie called ‘The Gun.’ Then he just shot another movie that was in Grand Rapids, [Michigan]. He did four movies since I did my movie. It was an honor to be in ‘S.W.A.T. 2’. L.L. was in the first one. Samuel Jackson, Colin Farrell — a lot of big names was in ‘S.W.A.T. 1’. So me being in ‘S.W.A.T. 2′ is crazy. “It’s a lot of big name stars in it,” Yayo added about “S.W.A.T.: Fire Fight.” Kevin Phillips, he played in the Biggie movie [“Notorious”]. Shannon Kane, she just played in “Brooklyn’s Finest.” And Robert Patrick — I got a chance to meet him. I’m a big “Terminator” fan. And it is directed by Benny boom. It was cool.” Yayo plays a member of a band of criminals led by Patrick. “I’m just a bad guy. I’m from the streets, and I do what bad guys do. I play Carlos,” he explained. “I’m definitely a bad guy. I don’t have a problem playing a bad guy, ’cause everybody looks at me as that anyway. It was real easy. … It’s going to be a lot of shooting and stuff in the movie, it’s great. There’s real S.W.A.T. in the movie and they real S.W.A.T.,” Yayo said of the special law enforcement team members who served as on-set technical advisers. “I met this guy, I forget his name, he’s the head S.W.A.T. guy for Detroit. He’s directing the actors on what to do. It’s S.W.A.T. in [the film who] obviously know what to do. It’s amazing to meet real S.W.A.T. They are really in the movie. It gets crazy in the movie!” Yayo said he has discovered a new love in acting, but music isn’t going to take a backseat. His second LP, tentatively titled Godfather of the Ghetto, is slated for release later this year, and he just put out the 50 Cent-featured “Pass the Patr

‘Predators’ Star Adrien Brody Talks 3-D And Arnold Schwarzenegger

Actor thinks 3-D would be a ‘pretty great idea’ for the film but hasn’t heard of any plans. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Adrien Brody Photo: MTV News We’re not entirely certain, but has there been a commandment laid down in Hollywood that declares, “Thou shalt not make a blockbuster in only two measly dimensions?” It’s hard to tell these days, as the likes of “The Last Airbender,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” and “The Green Hornet” race furiously to convert their 2-D flicks into 3-D releases. It’s enough to make you think that no film is safe. Thus, we have to wonder about every single high-profile release in this summer-movie season. Case in point: “Predators,” the Adrien Brody-led reboot of the classic sci-fi/horror franchise. Might we see those vicious aliens wreaking bloody havoc in three dimensions? Don’t count on it, Brody told us, even though he thinks the idea would be pretty cool. “No one’s talked to me about that,” he said. “I think it’d be a really pretty great idea. I don’t know. I’m not in the loop.” Whether “Predators” gets the 3-D conversion — and with its July 9 release date rapidly approaching, we’re fairly certain another dimension won’t be slapped on — Brody is looking forward to checking out one scene in particular. “The finale is probably the most dramatic aspect of most movies, but I think that as it builds, the stakes build, and eventually you get to that iconic face-off,” he said. “So that’s pretty great. I can’t wait for that.” Brody hasn’t yet seen the finished cut. Who knows? He might not catch a screening until the premiere itself. Will original franchise star Arnold Schwarzenegger be walking the red carpet as well to welcome in this newest version of the series? “I would imagine,” Brody said. “I hope he has time in his busy schedule.” Brody’s pretty busy himself. His sci-fi flick “Splice” arrives in June, and he recently signed on to Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris.” But he seems excited about the prospect of filming a sequel to “Predators,” if the opportunity should arise. He’s less excited about once again packing on the muscles to play the part of the ex-military man trying to survive on a strange planet packed with vicious aliens. “Six-packs are not the difficult part about it,” he laughed. “There was another 20 pounds on me which I’d have to put back.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Predators.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Brittany Murphy And Simon Monjack: A History Of Their Romance

Late actress and screenwriter, who married in 2007, died within five months of each other. By Gil Kaufman Brittany Murphy and Simon Monjack Photo: Riccardo Savi/ WireImage On its surface, it was an unusual romance to say the least. The twice-engaged beautiful young actress with the sometimes-spotty filmography and the frumpy British B-movie director/screenwriter with a history of financial struggles who faced deportation just months before their wedding. Now, just over three years after the revelation of their secret April 2007 nuptials, Brittany Murphy and Simon Monjack are dead , both having collapsed and passed away in the Hollywood home they shared with Murphy’s mother. Murphy — who died in December at age 32 from a combination of pneumonia, anemia and multiple drug intoxication &#8212 had a series of high-profile relationships with he likes of Ashton Kutcher and Fred Durst during her once-hot career. She was engaged to Jeff Kwatinetz, the Hollywood heavyweight producer/manager, for around five months in 2004. She then broke it off with him and got engaged in 2005 to a production assistant on her 2004 film, “Little Black Book,” Joe Macaluso. The pair ended their romance in August 2006. The actress once told tabloid magazine OK that she met Monjack when she was 17 and that the two had kept in touch over the years. “The easiest decision I ever made in my life was getting married,” she said. “He’s flown around the world to make sure we spend every single night together.” If the two kept in touch, it was a secret to most people in Hollywood, because even the tabloids were surprised when the pair tied the knot in a quiet Jewish ceremony in April 2007 after never really appearing in public together and not announcing their engagement. The small ceremony was reportedly attended by family members and wasn’t revealed until an Us Weekly reporter spotted the pair wearing wedding rings at the Kentucky Derby in early May 2007. E! Online speculated that the couple had gotten engaged at some point in the previous eight months, because before that, Murphy was still planning her wedding to Macaluso. The marriage was also shocking because Monjack, seven years older than Murphy, was practically unknown in the entertainment business and the press he had gotten was mostly unkind. Monjack was born in Hillingdon, England, on August 5, 1970. He was credited with writing, producing and directing the little-seen 2000 movie “Two Days, Nine Lives,” which starred “Hellboy II” actor Luke Goss as a movie producer who enters rehab after a drug-related crash. He also had a disputed co-writing credit on the Edie Sedgwick bio “Factory Girl.” He became most well-known for a pair of warrants issued in Virginia for alleged credit-card theft fraud that were later dropped, a nearly $500,000 judgment against him in 2006 following a lawsuit by a British investment firm and a nine-day jail stint in February 2007 by customs officials for overstaying his work visa. Even after their wedding, the couple was infrequently seen in public, and when news did emerge, it was typically unflattering, such as when Monjack allegedly showed up drunk and belligerent on the set of Murphy’s final film, 2009’s “The Caller.” Reports at the time said that Murphy was fired from the film after Monjack burst onto the set inebriated and disrupted shooting. A short time later, she was found dead in her home. Rumors swirled again when a distraught Monjack refused to allow the coroner’s office to do an autopsy on the actress.

‘MacGruber’ Stars Ryan Phillippe, Kristen Wiig Talk Awkward Sex Scenes

Intimate moments with Will Forte are ‘very sweaty and goal-oriented,’ Wiig says. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Ryan Phillippe Photo: MTV News “MacGruber” is raw. Throats are gruesomely ripped out; F-bombs are dropped like the characters need them to breathe; and there’s some raunchy sex. It’s not the sort of thing you might see on the recurring “Saturday Night Live” sketches that spawned this big-screen comedy. Just ask co-star Ryan Phillippe , who had to insert a celery stick up his bum for a scene (really, you don’t want to know the backstory right now). That’s some R-rated funkiness, right there. And there was no body double on set to let him off the hook. “I don’t know how in detail we need to get about that,” he laughed. “But I clenched. That’s all you need to know. There was no insertion. I am still a virgin back there. “The first time I read it, I thought, ‘How tied to this are they?’ ” he continued. “It was a carrot at the time. By the time we shot it, which was near the end of the film, I think intentionally — because they thought I might back out if they sprung it on me too early — but I had seen so much insanity after the three weeks leading up to my scene that it seemed tame. I had to chip in.” Co-star Kristen Wiig chipped in as well with a wacky, intense love sesh between her Vicki St. Elmo and Will Forte’s MacGruber. How does Forte stack up as an onscreen lover? “Loud, aggressive, very sweaty and goal-oriented,” she joked. Traumatic, she could have added. “I remember walking out of the house in a bathrobe, just covered in sweat, mostly not mine,” she recalled. “And I think they had cupcakes or something, and I was like, ‘I can’t! I can’t eat those right now!’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “MacGruber.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
