Mark Hoppus Compares ‘Star Wars’ To ‘Twilight’

Blink-182 frontman says not seeing a ‘Twilight’ movie would be like ‘somebody coming up to me and saying [they] never saw ‘Star Wars.’ By Jocelyn Vena Mark Hoppus Photo: MTV News The teens of the new millennium wait anxiously for the day they can hit up their local cinema and check out the latest installment of “The Twilight Saga,” but 30 or so years ago that’s how teens felt about each and every episode of “Star Wars.” So when the stars, including Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford, gathered to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “The Empire Strikes Back” , it seemed fitting to note that if you didn’t see this film in the theaters all those years ago, it was kind of like missing an episode of “Twilight.” But first Blink-182 frontman Mark Hoppus explained to MTV News at the event just why “Empire” is still such a beloved part of the “Star Wars” franchise. “I think that this movie has a longevity because it kicks so much ass, and it’s definitely my favorite movie of all time. And I think that it … has a really amazing second-act feel to it,” he said. “It’s really dark. It’s moody. It’s not just an action/adventure. There’s all these different elements that come into it. There’s betrayal and there’s discovery. It’s a really great movie.” That sounds similar to the second act of “Twilight,” “New Moon,” which sees itself pitted against “Avatar” at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . Hoppus admits he feels kind of silly for not yet having seen this generation’s pivotal flick. “I have not seen the new ‘Twilight,’ ” he said. “I don’t know. I suppose for this generation that’s like somebody coming up to me and saying [they] never saw ‘Star Wars.’ ” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘MacGruber’: Saturday Night Jive, By Kurt Loder

Another ‘SNL’ skit pumped up to pass for a movie. By Kurt Loder Will Forte in “MacGruber” Photo: Universal Pictures One walks in to any movie based on a “Saturday Night Live” skit with basement-level expectations. Still, the new “MacGruber” manages to disappoint. The most interesting thing about the picture is that, with a little tweaking, it might actually have been turned into an enjoyable parody of an ’80s-style action flick: Bullets fly, stuff blows up, doorway-size heavies lend menace, and it’s all been rendered with a knowing fondness for the form by cinematographer Brandon Trost (who also shot “Crank: High Voltage”). But too early on, comedy begins cropping up, and it’s all sub-basement from there on out. “SNL” enthusiasts will know that the skits this picture seeks to inflate are riffs on the ’80s TV show “MacGyver,” the hero of which was a gun-shy secret agent capable of combining the unlikeliest oddments — a cufflink, a crayon and a cantaloupe, say — into useful tools in stressful situations. The skits mine laughs from the manic incompetence of their special agent, MacGruber (played both there and here by Will Forte), and from the explosions he inevitably fails to abort. The movie attempts to do the same, but after maybe 20 minutes of Forte’s frantic, one-note mugging, it’s left with nowhere else to go — and there’s still more than an hour of this thing to sit through. The story has MacGruber — long thought dead — being tracked down to the remote monastery where he’s holed up by his former commander, Colonel Faith (Powers Boothe). The colonel has a new assignment: stopping MacGruber’s old adversary, Dieter Von Cunthe (Val Kilmer), from wreaking havoc with a nuclear warhead he’s stolen. Since Von Cunthe is the man who blew up MacGruber’s wife 10 years earlier, the legendary agent agrees to take a shot. To this end, he assembles an A-Team of special-ops brutes (all played by professional wrestlers), who are suddenly disbanded when the van into which he’s packed them (what else?) blows up. Desperate for replacements, MacGruber recruits an old colleague, Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig), and a whippersnapper Army lieutenant called Piper (Ryan Phillippe). Wiig remains a master of the throwaway line-reading, but some of the lines she’s handed here might have just as effectively been thrown away before they reached her; and Phillippe, for his part, is employed as a wooden straight man whose only function is to endure (along with us) Forte’s endless stretchy-faced verbal conniptions. Bad taste is supposed to be a badge of honor in a movie like this, but really, is there anyone left to offend with it? The non-stop barrage of F-words and whatnot unleashed in this film lost any ability to shock long ago; and while the name Cunthe was no doubt good for a giggle around the writer’s table, in its 50th repetition here it tests the limits of tedium. There’s also more poop humor than one might have thought strictly necessary. In fact, the movie has something of an anal fixation: One of MacGruber’s diversionary tactics is to stick a stalk of celery between his thighs so that it protrudes between his bare buttocks; and he’s curiously prone to offer up his nether region for rough use by men from whom he seeks favors. The picture also suffers from a lack of comic precision. At one point, we see Von Cunthe painting a picture using a topless fat old woman as a model. This has the shape of a gag — but what is it? Von Cunthe’s art hobby comes out of nowhere and immediately returns there, and we’re left with nothing in the way of amusement beyond an old woman’s humiliation. Presumably, this seemed funny during the scripting sessions, too. “MacGruber” demonstrates once again the inadvisability of attempting to stretch a one-minute TV sketch into a 90-minute movie — especially when the lead character is nothing more than an assemblage of over-amped and decreasingly funny wisecracks. “SNL” has been pounding the MacGruber character for more than three years now; could anyone really have thought there was a drop of humor left to be wrung from it? Or an audience parched enough for laughs to want more? Don’t miss Kurt Loder’s review of “Solitary Man,” also new in theaters this week. ‘Teen Wolf’ Gets A Reboot In MTV Series

The show, which starts production this summer, is a darker take on the high school werewolf story. By Kara Warner Tyler Posey Photo: 3 Arts Entertainment Young men who spontaneously transform into wolves are hot right now, especially in the age of “Twilight.” Now, MTV is getting into the shape-shifting business with a modern spin on the cult-classic ’80s hit “Teen Wolf.” The series is said to be a departure from the film — a campy comedy that starred Michael J. Fox — and is described in a press release as a “sexy thriller set against the drama of high school life with a forbidden, romantic love story at its core.” The series centers on Scott McCall as the quintessential outsider, struggling to be recognized in a way that takes him out of high school anonymity. One night, his best friend, Stiles, convinces him to go into the woods to join a police search for a dead body. Scott ends up being attacked by a creature in the darkness, narrowly surviving with a vicious bite in his side. When he wakes up the next morning, he is greeted with strange surprises and a life that will never be the same. “We are always up for creative challenges at MTV,” said Liz Gateley, MTV senior vice president of series development. “We loved the conceit of the original film and knew the title had a great hook. The creative challenge was to take that title and reinvent it as a horror series for the MTV audience. It combines romance and high school to make ‘Teen Wolf’ the perfect thriller for MTV.” “Teen Wolf” stars Tyler Posey (“Maid in Manhattan,” “Brothers and Sisters”) as the newly bitten werewolf; Dylan O’Brien is Stiles; Crystal Reed is the mysterious new girl in town, Allison; and Tyler Hoechlin (“Road to Perdition,” “7th Heaven”) is the older and possibly dangerous werewolf, Derek Hale. “Teen Wolf” is slated to begin production this summer for 12 one-hour episodes. Are you excited to see a new spin on “Teen Wolf”? Let us know in the comments!

REVIEW: Shrek Forever After a Witty, Fitting Franchise Finale

That the Shrek films have always had one eye firmly on the chaperones — regularly casting clever asides, storybook mash-ups, and classic rock riffs into their corner — is one of their canniest innovations. While appealing to parents is standard procedure today, at the time of the original’s release, in 2001, it still seemed like a clutch move, elevating the film above the steady flow of Disney treacle it took pleasure in subverting and taking up Pixar’s gauntlet. Almost a decade after its inception, having slightly adjusted the bar for family entertainment, the franchise finds an apt farewell in Shrek Forever After. More redux than sequel, the final Shrek is more parent- (and specifically dad-) oriented than ever; it may also produce the first twinge of nostalgia in the kids who thrilled to the original at a formative age.

Megan Fox: Out of Transformers 3

Megan Fox will not play a role in Transformers 3 . In related news, THG will no longer be seeing Transformers 3 . Following reports that the movie studio and director Michael Bay planned to cast another actress as Shia LaBeouf’s love interest in the film, Fox’s rep quickly released a statement and said departing the franchise was his client’s choice. “Megan Fox will not be starring in Transformers 3 ,” the rep said. “It was her decision not to return. She wishes the franchise the best.” Will you miss Megan Fox in Transformers? Fox and Bay do have a contentious history: the actress compared the director to Hitler last year. Seriously . The third movie in the Transformers franchise is scheduled for a July 2011 release. If Fox wants to be taken seriously as an actress, it’s not a bad idea to focus her career on more serious fare anyway. Or just go the opposite direction and star in soft core porn. We’d advise the latter. The actress will next be seen in Jonah Hex , an action flick that also features Josh Brolin, John Malkovich and Will Arnett. The photo above is courtesy of the movie. Call us crazy, but we think it will do well.

Robert Pattinson’s ‘Remember Me’ DVD Due June 22

DVD release is just over a week before ‘Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ hits theaters. By Eric Ditzian Emilie de Ravin and Robert Pattinson in “Remember Me” Photo: Summit Entertainment Just over a week before “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” hits theaters, Robert Pattinson ‘s romantic drama, “Remember Me,” arrives on DVD and Blu-ray June 22. Both discs will feature audio commentaries with RPattz, as well other castmembers and the filmmakers. Co-starring Emilie de Ravin, Pierce Brosnan and Chris Cooper, “Remember Me” tells the story of Tyler (Pattinson) and Ally (de Ravin), two young New Yorkers who meet and fall in love in the summer of 2001. “I never really played a normal guy before, and it was just that,” Pattinson told us about the role in March. “It was just a really solid story, and I had never really done that.” He first encountered the script shortly after finishing “Twilight” and ended up shooting the film in between production on “New Moon” and “Eclipse.” Filmmakers had been unsuccessfully trying to cast the role of Ally when de Ravin came in to audition . “I read the script three weeks before they started shooting,” she told us. “I flew to New York to test with Rob, and we immediately got along and had instant, great chemistry, which is not an easy thing to come by. Obviously, you’re acting, but you want to have that connection with somebody. We had it. And I was thrown into a wardrobe fitting that same day.” Released in the U.S. in March, “Remember Me” grossed $46.9 million worldwide. The Blu-ray will sell for $34.99, while the DVD is priced at $26.99. Starting June 15, fans can download a redeemable coupon for $8 off their purchase. Summit is also packaging the discs with an offer for a free movie poster of Pattinson that is redeemable by mail.
