Chastain Rules, Schwarzenegger Drools As ‘Mama,’ ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ Rule Box Office

The box office has spoken! Jessica Chastain scored the top two weekend spots over Arnold Schwarzenegger ( The Last Stand ) and the double-whammy of Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe ( Broken City ) as the Guillermo del Toro -produced fantasy horror Mama scored a #1 debut with $28.1 million and Zero Dark Thirty stepped into second place. (Oscar rival Jennifer Lawrence didn’t come out so bad herself as Silver Linings Playbook expanded to #3 in wide release the same weekend she tenderly slammed her fellow Best Actress contenders on Saturday Night Live .) More power to the ladies! But where, oh where, did Arnold land in his big action comeback? Schwarzenegger’s breezy actioner The Last Stand showed a surprising lack of muscle over the MLK holiday weekend, raking in just $6.7 million over three days and calling into question the potency of the ex-Governator’s screen appeal as it shuffled into tenth place at the box office. Tenth place. Ouch. Broken City , Fox’s Wahlberg-Crowe mano-a-mano crime pic, also debuted to rather limp returns, with a $9.5 million estimated weekend take (numbers via Deadline ). But if Arnie’s box office cache was proven less brawny than expected, the Best Actress-nominated duo of Chastain and Lawrence reflected strong appeal for both Oscar contenders, both of whom notched Golden Globes wins last weekend. For Chastain’s part, the genre gamble that is the feral child-ghost mother pic Mama could have thrown a wrench into her awards campaign but paid off; it currently sits at a better-than-most-horror-pics 62 percent rating at Rotten Tomatoes, but had some pundits wondering if Universal’s timing of the film’s release was part of a crafty plot to ruin the awards season momentum of her campaign for Sony’s Zero Dark Thirty . But audiences came for a double dose of Chastain in two very different roles — one in a prestige pic that underscored Chastain’s steely strength in a man’s world ( ZDT ), the other a genre pic built around an emotionally distant character gradually embracing her latent maternal instincts ( Mama ). Meanwhile, Silver Linings Playbook and its swelling Oscar momentum continues to be owned by Lawrence, whose audience appeal was solidified by SNL ‘s solid ratings Saturday night. With almost exactly a month left before Oscar ballots are due, this race is just starting to get good. Daniel Radcliffe Girlfriend: Erin Darke?

Does Daniel Radcliffe have a new girlfriend? Yes, according to a very reliable source: The actor’s lips! Witnesses tell People that the Harry Potter actor was spotted swapping serious spit with Your Darlings costar Erin Darke over the weekend, as they shared a smooch and a cuddle at the Sundance Film Festival. The cozy incident took place at the Grey Goose Vodka Lounge dinner, which followed a screening of the film in which Radcliffe and Darke appear. Young Darlings centers in a 1944 murder, with Radcliffe taking on the role of Allen Ginsberg. “They’ve been dating for a while but have been debating going public,” a source tells the magazine, while Radcliffe politely brushed of a question at the event about his “girlfriend.”

Mother Pus Bucket! Michael Cera’s Not Sure He’d Take A ‘Ghostbusters 3’ Gig

Who you gonna call to cast Ghostbusters 3 — if it ever gets made, that is?  Don’t count on Michael Cera . I got a brief moment to talk to the actor at the Sundance Film Festival on Thursday where his latest movie, Sebastián Silva’s  Crystal Fairy  helped kick off the festival, and I took the opportunity to ask him if he’d been approached at all about the much-discussed Ghostbusters 3 film that co-creators Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis want to start shooting this year  . “I haven’t been approached,” said Cera, who expressed some doubt that the picture was happening. When I then asked if he would be interested in appearing in Ghostbusters 3 if the stars — and a good script — aligned, he replied: “That would be a tough one. The first movie meant so much to me. It could be dangerous.” Smart kid. Cera loves the original Ghostbusters so much that he doesn’t want to appear in anything that’s not going to honor it. And yet, I was surprised by the answer. Aykroyd and Ramis have both said that the plot of Ghostbusters 3 will involve the original crew handing off their Proton packs to a new generation, and Cera’s well-known GB love and his deadpan style make him an ideal candidate. In a poll Movieline conducted last fall, Cera was readers number-two choice, behind Seth Rogen , to be part of the new Ghostbusters team. I didn’t get much of a chance to talk to the actor because he was swarmed by Sundancers congratulating him for his performance in the completely improvised  Crystal Fairy. Cera plays an obnoxiously self-absorbed American who undergoes an emotional transformation when he invites a free-spirited but damaged woman who calls herself Crystal Fairy (Gaby Hoffmann)  to accompany him and his Chilean friends on a road trip to do Mescaline. Both Cera and Hoffmann ( You Can Count on Me ) give intense, layered and remarkably ego-free performances in this dark comedy that comes with a real emotional punch at the end. (Silva has two movies with Cera in them at the festival. The other is Magic Magic  with Juno Temple.)   Hoffmann’s being doing exceptional work for years, but her portrayal of the New Agey Crystal Fairy should put her in line for some real marquee roles based on effusive audience reaction Thursday night.  Twice during the film, she gets completely and unabashedly naked, which inspired one woman in the audience to yell out “Free style!” in reference to the actress’s unruly, character-appropriate pubic hair. After the screening, Silva said that his scriptless movie, which was shot in 12 days, is about “the birth of compassion in someone’s life” and is based on an actual encounter he years ago with a woman who actually called herself Crystal Fairy.  “I hope she finds out,” said Silva, who’d like to get back in touch with his muse. Gene Rosen, Sandy Hook Samaritan Hero, Harassed By "Truthers"

Gene Rosen, a Connecticut good Samaritan who harbored six survivors of the Sandy Hook shooting, has become a target for “Truthers” accusing him of being a liar and/or actor. Yet another element of the Sandy Hook conspiracy , if you believe that sort of thing. How it come to be that an innocent bystander – some say hero – is now being harassed for it? On the morning of the infamous shooting, the Newtown, Conn., resident was feeding his cats when he discovered four terrified children hiding out in his driveway. They told Rosen their teacher was dead, and he listened to their chilling account of the tragedy that was still going on at the nearby Sandy Hook Elementary School. Rosen, 69, was subsequently interviewed by many of the media outlets that descended on the small community, his anguished face flashed across TV screens around the world. The sincerity of that anguish has since come into question by a group of Sandy Hook conspiracy theorists who call themselves “Truthers” and have made his life difficult. These individuals have so far posted Rosen’s personal info online, created fake social media accounts using his name and harassed the Newtown resident via email and phone. “I don’t know what to do,” retired psychologist Rosen told Salon . “There must be some way to morally shame these people, because there were 20 dead children lying there, an eighth of a mile from my window.” “I thought of an expression, that this ‘adds insult to injury,’ but that’s a stupid expression, because this is not an injury, this is an abomination.” Unfortunately for Rosen, it is an abomination that has gained traction. Websites have questioned Rosen’s motives for sharing his story, even suggesting that he made an “audition” tape and accusing him of “pedo under-tones.” A YouTube video suggests Rosen is a actually Screen Actors Guild thespian, and that “The only thing consistent about this clown’s act, is all the fake crying.” “The man has never shed an actual tear in a dozen interviews.” Yet another conspiracy theory blog calls Rosen a “bad crisis actor” who changes his story and focuses on the sound of Adam Lanza ‘s gunshots for political effect. His explanation for being so public about his experience? “I wanted to speak about the bravery of the children, and it kind of helped me work through this,” Rosen told Salon of his decision to give multiple interviews to the media. “I guess I kind of opened myself up to this.”

Luke Bracey: Holding Hands with Selena Gomez?!?

For most of today, fans have been wondering: was Selena Gomez drunk at a Golden Globes after-party? But now they have a new question to ponder: who the heck is this Luke Bracey fella?!? Witnesses tell Us Weekly that Gomez was acting all “super close” with the Australian actor on Sunday night, even holding hands with him at one point. She was also overheard confirming her break-up with Justin Bieber to a friend, telling the pal that the trip to Mexico in late December “was awful” and they “were fighting” the whole time. Bracey, meanwhile, has appeared in the film Monte Carlo and the Australian series Home and Away .

WATCH: The Best Of Tina Fey & Amy Poehler’s Golden Globes Performance

Aspiring awards-show hosts, do I have a training video for you.  Here, in one sweet video-clip compilation, is a highlight reel of Tina Fey  and Amy Poehler’s pitch-perfect performance at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday. Included are Poehler’s lines about the “beautiful people of film rubbing shoulders with the rat-faced people of television,” Les Miserables  actress  Anne Hathaway not being cut out for porn, and  Fey’s warning to singer/songwriter  Taylor Swift to “stay away from Michael J. Fox’s son,” Sam.     This nicely edited clip, which was posted by The Guardian in the U.K.,  also features audience reaction to the jokes.  You get to see Jessica Chastain’s  gasp after  Poehler does the joke about Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow  understanding torture because of her three-year marriage to James Cameron. And Daniel Day-Lewis plays along by extending his index finger when Poehler and Fey tell the audience that the method actor actually worked for Steven Spielberg before Lincoln when he played E.T.  There’s even a bonus shot of Tommy Lee Jones scowling, which makes this video a must-have for any awards-show aficionado’s collection.  My only regret is that the video doesn’t include the shot of Poehler cuddling with George Clooney .  Check it out below, but put down the coffee cup first or you’ll be doing a spit take like Quentin Tarantino . WATCH: Michael Shannon Chills & Kills In ‘The Iceman’ Trailer

With all the fancy ‘staches and old-school automobiles, this second trailer for Ariel Vroman’s The Iceman reminds me of The Beastie Boys ‘ “Sabotage” video, with a lot of cold-blooded killing substituted for 1970s TV crime drama parody.   Grim-faced Michael Shannon plays Richard Kuklinski, the real-life contract killer who offed more than 1964 and 1986, Winona Ryder plays his wife and  Chris Evans — whose hair alone makes this trailer worth watching — is one of his partners in crime. Ray Liotta also does his usually masterful job of scaring the crap out of me, and James Franco , whose RabbitBandini Productions is credited as executive producer of the film, can be seen cowering near the end of the clip.
