Pope Benedict XVI: Now on Twitter!

It’s hard to envision Pope Benedict XVI cranking out musings on his iPhone 5 every 20 minutes, but the pontiff has officially joined Twitter , according to reports. At the age of 85, the Pope himself is about to be launched into the brave new world of social networking, complete with the official handle of “@pontifex”. @pontifex already has 360,000+ followers and has yet to Tweet once. Badass. It’s easy to see why the Catholic Church, which has struggled to connect with teenagers and young adults (as have all religions) launched this initiative. Archbishop Claudio Celli, head of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, pointed out that some 140 million people currently use Twitter. Of those, nearly 40 percent are in the 16-24 age group. “This is a new market for ideas and the church should be there … This is not the only way [to spread the Catholic Church’s message] but it is a very useful one,” he said. “It’s cost-effective and not labour-intensive.” Do not expect a new tweet from the Pope every half hour – more like once a week, if that – but the Vatican insists any tweets from the Pope will be genuine. While the Pope will not be typing out his thoughts in 140 characters or less, he will oversee and ensure Tweets have “his engagement and approval.” Archbishop Celli said the 140 character limit will prove something of a “challenge” but that Twitter offers a “wonderful opportunity to share his nuggets of wisdom.” The Pope will begin tweeting December 12, Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, when he will answer some of the questions sent to #askpontifex about faith and belief. The Pope (with the help of staff members) will also be tweeting in eight languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, Polish and Arabic.

NYC Subway Killer at Large After Pushing Man to His Death

NYPD officers are searching for a man who allegedly pushed another man to his death in front of a subway train in Manhattan on Monday afternoon. Man Pushed to Death on New York Subway Ki-Suck Han, 58, of Elmhurst, Queens, was shoved in front of a southbound R train at the 49th Street station at around 12:30 p.m., according to NBC New York. He was later pronounced dead at St. Luke’s Hospital. Witnesses said the suspect (pictured above) was mumbling to himself before getting into an argument with Han on the platform and shoving him onto the tracks. After falling, Han tried to climb back up on the platform but was struck by the train before he could make it to safety and never recovered from the impact. One witness videotaped part of the verbal altercation (above) and turned the tape over to police, which released it in an effort to identify the suspect. It’s unclear what triggered the dispute, but the suspect was clearly heated about something and exchanged pointed words with the late Ki-Suck Han. The man was last seen wearing a dark jacket, a gray T-shirt and a cap. He is pictured below. If you have any information, please contact NYC police.

Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs: First Photo!

As previously reported, Ashton Kutcher will play Steve Jobs in an upcoming biopic about the late Apple founder, and the first image from the film has hit the web. Check out Ashton as vintage Jobs, circa 1983: The film, jOBS (not a typo, that’s how the movie title is stylized), will premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, which released the above image yesterday. Outfitted in a button-down shirt, jeans, and a goatee, the Two and a Half Men star leans against a desk in front of an IBM poster with the slogan THINK . Physically at least, he bears an uncanny resemblance to Jobs. Not convinced? Follow the jump and see the actual Steve Jobs photo upon which this is based: Sundance describes the Jobs biopic as the “true story of one of the greatest entrepreneurs in American history,” which “chronicles the defining 30 years of Steve Jobs’ Life.” jOBS also stars Dermot Mulroney, Josh Gad, Lukas Haas, J. K. Simmons, and Matthew Modine. It will close out the January 17-27 event in Park City, Utah. Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs :   He’s a perfect choice! He’s an insulting choice! View Poll »

Marvin Gaye’s Son Not Thrilled By Lenny Kravitz Planned Biopic

Singer and actor Lenny Kravitz is planning to take on playing late performer Marvin Gaye in a feature that has caught the eire of the “Let Love Rule” musician’s former classmate, Marvin Gaye III. “The producers and directors of this film are very wrong and shameful,” Marvin Gaye III told TMZ . “[They’re] trying to do a film about a low period in his life. They don’t even know the whole story.” Kravitz will play the late singer under the working title, Sexual Healing , which reportedly centers on Gaye’s life in the ’80s, a period in which he battled drug abuse and depression. Gaye’s father shot and killed him in 1984. Gaye III said that he and Kravitz are schoolmates and continue to be friends, but said he wants to meet with Kravitz and “talk to him about why he would do this.” Family members including Gaye III have reached out to lawyers to try and halt production and expressed his hope that Kravitz is pursuing the project without realizing the extent of opposition coming from the Gaye side. “I would hope [Kravitz] doesn’t have any idea that we are against this film being done,” said Gaye III. Kravitz, whose credits include Precious and more recently in The Hunger Games is taking on the role of Marvin Gaye for director Julien Temple ( London: The Modern Babylon ). One Direction vs. The Wanted: Boy Band Twitter War!!!

It is totally on between One Direction and The Wanted. Over the weekend, Max George (who shot down a certain redheaded trainwreck the night of the most recent Lindsay Lohan arrest ) simply Tweeted: “Psy and me getting messy #geekandproud.” Zayn Malik then responded that “the first step is totally acceptance. #geekoftheweek. You display just how much of a wannabe you are.” And, from there – as one of our favorite Anchorman quotes would say – things escalated quickly… “That’s not very nice, @ZaynMalik. I was just starting to like you and your RnB songs, too,” George wrote, backed up by Tom Parker of The Wanted, who chimed in with: “Zayn Malik had his ‘1 Stripes’ knickers in a twist, bro.” “Mate, if I had a face like yours, my hair would be the last thing I would worry about,” replied Zayn, followed by Louis Tomlinson telling Parker to “pipe down.” From there, it turned especially ugly… STD-style! Malik shot off to The Wanted, addressing members of the group with: “Let’s not even discuss vocal ability, boys. I would love to chat but have to run through rehearsals.” And after George Tweeted for him to “stay off the bud” because “it makes you cranky,” Malik actually fired back: ” Alright chlamydia boy .” “Tell me you’re problems without the 8 security in NYC.. The only problem I have with you is the s–t banter. Grow up son,” Max responded, and the exchange was capped off with Zayn’s: “I’d f–king love to, see you in New York big man ha u clown.” All the fiery Tweets were eventually deleted, but not before they were seen by millions of followers, all of whom are likely now debating: Which band would actually win in a fight, One Direction or The Wanted? And which group do you like better?   One Direction The Wanted View Poll »

‘Hobbit’ First Review: 48 FPS Is ‘Eye-Popping,’ But Watch Out For The Jar Jar Binks Of ‘LOTR’

Peter Jackson ‘s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey had its New Zealand premiere Wednesday, and although local press are still under embargo, the New York Daily News has burst out of the gate with the first published review of the anticipated Lord of the Rings follow-up. What’s the early verdict on Jackson’s groundbreaking 48 fps presentation, which was so publicly panned in previews ? Ethan Sacks’ review is enthusiastic if not terrifically detailed, but let’s cut to the elephant in the room: Will audiences reject the super-resolution 48 fps look of The Hobbit ? “Critics who saw a trailer earlier this year were unimpressed, but after a minute or two of adjusting, the higher resolution is eye-popping, similar to discovering HD television for the first time,” Sacks writes. Phew. Well, grain of salt: This is the first and only review out there now, so we’ll see if other critics agree as The Hobbit begins screening stateside tomorrow. As for the film itself, expect a cameo-filled romp that should satisfy Tolkien fans: “Lighter and funnier than its Lord of the Rings predecessors, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey remains faithful to the fantasy world last seen in the 2003 Academy Award-winning The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King .” There is just one little glaring notation; Sacks warns of one potentially grating character by dropping three of the most fearsome words in popular geekdom: Jar Jar Binks. “Like all unexpected journeys, there are a few pitfalls along the way, most notably the tangential subplot surrounding bumbling wizard Radagast the Brown (Sylvester McCoy), whose buffoonery at times descends into Jar Jar Binks territory.” [ New York Daily News ] The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters December 14.
