‘Scream 4’ Has A ‘Perfect Setup,’ Hayden Panettiere Says

‘For an audience that is so well-versed in ‘Scream’ … it’s trickier to throw them a curveball,’ she tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Tim Kash Hayden Panettiere Photo: MTV News With filming of the fourth chapter in the “Scream” franchise under way in Michigan, fans are hard-pressed to find out new details about the fourth film’s notoriously mysterious plotline. However, when MTV News recently caught up with Hayden Panettiere, she said she’s confident the filmmakers are doing the previous movies justice and that the process so far has been a blast. “I think it’s just perfect timing, the amount of time that has passed since the last one came out,” the former “Heroes” star told MTV News. “It’s a perfect setup, with all of these films … the [fictional] ‘Stab’ [movies] and all the things like that. I think with all of the ‘Scream’ [films], the idea is to throw the audience for a loop every time.” Panettiere acknowledged that for savvy audiences, the surprise factor is an even bigger challenge this time around. “For an audience that is so well-versed in ‘Scream’ [films] and in what happens and who becomes the killer, blah, blah, blah, it’s trickier to throw them a curveball,” she said. “I think they’ve done a really cool job with the script. We’ve had a blast on it.” Panettiere also heaped praise on her castmates and director Wes Craven. “Wes Craven is, he not only is the nicest human being, but he’s a brilliant director. And it’s all the original cast as well: Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox and David Arquette. We’ve got an incredible new cast that’s come in, and we have a pretty good team.” The spunky actress said she couldn’t reveal too much about her character Kirby, only that she’s “edgy, sassy and smart. She’s a very strong character.” Other key players in the star-studded cast include Emma Roberts, Rory Culkin, Adam Brody, Anthony Anderson and Marley Shelton. “Scream 4” is scheduled to open April 15, 2011. REVIEW: Ask Not What Predators Does For Adrien Brody, Ask What Adrien Brody Does For Predators

Not a sequel and not quite a reboot, Predators sits in that no-man’s land of derivation, where a franchise is plundered mainly for its conceptual cachet, and continuity and reinvention are cast aside as hopelessly old-fashioned. Conceiving of their audience as a chronic video-game player, the filmmakers seem to have figured that fans want only minor variations on the same experience, over and over again. Not that such a calculation is below a franchise born as a goof (the original screenwriters were inspired by a joke that followed the release of Rocky IV : If that franchise were to continue, he’d have to fight an alien) and forced into the indignity of the Predator vs. Alien films. Fans of the original, which had Arnold Schwarzenegger wasting a killer extraterrestrial in Guatemala, have likely grown resigned to disappointment with its descendents; Predators will not change that entirely, but it may summon enough fond memories to sneak by.

Charlize Theron Talks New ‘Mad Max’ Film, ‘Fury Road’

‘I feel like we’re going to go to set out on a journey and do something original.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Charlize Theron Photo: MTV News Charlize Theron would love to share a few details about her much-hyped role in the upcoming Mad Max film, “Fury Road,” but she’s terrified the filmmakers would punish her for giving up any details. “They would kill me,” she told MTV News, just after receiving the Decade of Hotness honors at Spike’s Guys Choice Awards. “They’re listening to everything I’m saying right now,” she said conspiratorially. “It’s so top-secret they would destroy me.” Theron did, however, express enthusiasm for leading man Tom Hardy and director George Miller. “[Tom’s] amazing,” she said. “I think his work in [2009’s] ‘Bronson’ was incredible.” Theron went on to explain that veteran writer/director Miller being attached to the film was her main reason for signing on to this fourth installment in the “Mad Max” franchise. “I wanted to go and do this because I felt that George Miller — well, he’s a genius — and the idea of doing something that has this mass audience appeal with great actors — that is a dream come true. So I’m super excited about that.” The Academy Award-winning actress likened the production to embarking on an adventure. “It’s obnoxious for actors to say this, but I feel like we’re going to go to set out on a journey and do something original.” Also joining Theron and Hardy are castmembers Nicholas Hoult (“Clash of the Titans”), Teresa Palmer (“Bedtime Stories”) and Adelaide Clemens (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”). Production is reportedly scheduled to begin in Australia sometime this August. Mel Gibson , who famously brought the original “Mad” Max Rockatansky to life more than 30 years ago, told MTV News earlier this year that he “can’t wait to see” the new film. “Look, whatever George does, I think George is a genius, and whatever he is going to do with that franchise, he’s got good reason for doing it,” Gibson said. The action star, now in his 50s, said he was glad to have passed on the torch to Hardy: “I can’t take the punishment for that sort of thing.” Are you excited to see “Fury Road” once it opens? Megan Fox Dropped From ‘Transformers 3’

Fox and director Michael Bay reportedly exchanged heated words last year. By MTV News staff Megan Fox in “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” Photo: Paramount Megan Fox and Michael Bay famously exchanged heated words around the release of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” last summer, with the actress comparing the director to Hitler and the director saying the actress “still has a lot of growing up to do.” Despite their contentious relationship, the pair seemed set to reunite this summer for a third “Transformers” flick. But now, in a stunning reversal, Fox has been dropped from the movie. Deadline.com broke the story that Paramount has declined to pick up Fox’s contractual option for “Transformers 3” and that giving star Shia LaBeouf a “new love interest makes more sense for the story,” according to an unnamed source. GossipCop.com has now confirmed the story. “Her option has not been picked up,” a spokesperson for the studio reportedly said. As of press time, MTV News’ calls to Paramount, Fox’s publicist and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura’s publicist have not been returned. MTV News had heard whispers that the filmmakers had been considering writing Fox out of the script, but nothing seemed to have come of it until now. Di Bonaventura told MTV News in April that there was no trouble in the world of “Transformers” when it came to Fox and Bay’s relationship. “Michael and Megan get along great,” he told us. “Like in any creative endeavor, there’s not always total agreement. Michael doesn’t agree on everything with me or Shia. He’s the captain of the ship. But I think that’s much ado about nothing. I even read that we were thinking about not casting her. Come on! It’s so silly. As though we would want to mess with such a successful combination.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers 3.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Robert Pattinson’s ‘Remember Me’ DVD Due June 22

DVD release is just over a week before ‘Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ hits theaters. By Eric Ditzian Emilie de Ravin and Robert Pattinson in “Remember Me” Photo: Summit Entertainment Just over a week before “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” hits theaters, Robert Pattinson ‘s romantic drama, “Remember Me,” arrives on DVD and Blu-ray June 22. Both discs will feature audio commentaries with RPattz, as well other castmembers and the filmmakers. Co-starring Emilie de Ravin, Pierce Brosnan and Chris Cooper, “Remember Me” tells the story of Tyler (Pattinson) and Ally (de Ravin), two young New Yorkers who meet and fall in love in the summer of 2001. “I never really played a normal guy before, and it was just that,” Pattinson told us about the role in March. “It was just a really solid story, and I had never really done that.” He first encountered the script shortly after finishing “Twilight” and ended up shooting the film in between production on “New Moon” and “Eclipse.” Filmmakers had been unsuccessfully trying to cast the role of Ally when de Ravin came in to audition . “I read the script three weeks before they started shooting,” she told us. “I flew to New York to test with Rob, and we immediately got along and had instant, great chemistry, which is not an easy thing to come by. Obviously, you’re acting, but you want to have that connection with somebody. We had it. And I was thrown into a wardrobe fitting that same day.” Released in the U.S. in March, “Remember Me” grossed $46.9 million worldwide. The Blu-ray will sell for $34.99, while the DVD is priced at $26.99. Starting June 15, fans can download a redeemable coupon for $8 off their purchase. Summit is also packaging the discs with an offer for a free movie poster of Pattinson that is redeemable by mail. Daniel Radcliffe’s PSA For LBGT Help Line Debuts

‘If you’re feeling helpless or hopeless, there’s always a safe place to turn,’ he says in the Trevor Project PSA. By Eric Ditzian Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News Earlier this year, MTV News was on hand as “Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe recorded a public-service announcement for the Trevor Project , a nonprofit organization focused on crisis support and suicide prevention for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youths. “It’s something I’ve always been quite passionate about,” the British actor explained to us after the shoot. “Because I grew up around gay men, it was always a natural thing to me. It was never something I ever gave a second thought to. … And now I am in a position where I can help an amazing thing like the Trevor Project.” Radcliffe’s charitable effort has now debuted online. “If you’re feeling helpless or hopeless, there’s always a safe place to turn,” he says in the PSA. Anyone can call the organization’s number — (866) 4-U-TREVOR — for free and confidential support. “You can talk to someone 24 hours a day,” the actor says. “There are about 160 people in total who work around the clock, and that number is obviously growing over time. It is an incredible thing,” Radcliffe told MTV News. “I was talking to one of the [volunteers], who said, ‘I hate the fact that this needs to exist.’ But it’s so important that it does.” Founded by the filmmakers of an Oscar-winning short film called “Trevor,” the Trevor Project is the leading national organization dedicated to supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youths. The group’s prevention hotline and trained counselors have helped save lives and sought to foster safe, inclusive environments for at-risk youth at homes and schools. Their message — and Radcliffe’s — is a simple and powerful one. As the actor says in the PSA: “Be proud of who you are.” What do you think about Radcliffe’s PSA? Share your thoughts in the comments. ‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows’ Dividing Point Isn’t Set

Tom Felton says filmmakers are still undecided where to split the book into to films. By Eric Ditzian Tom Felton Photo: Mike Marsland/ WireImage At some point in the cinematic adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the filmmakers are going to take an eight-month break: the time between the November 2010 opening of the first part and the July 2011 release of the second. The big question, of course, is where exactly the break will be. Last summer, we got word that part one of “Deathly Hallows” would end directly after Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) are captured by the Snatchers. Part two would then open as Harry, his friends and their captors arrive at Malfoy Manor. But it seems like nothing, at this point, is definite when it comes the much-hyped “Deathly Hallows” split. “The scripts were set for it,” co-star Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) told MTV News. “There was one and two. There had to be a middle point. But they’ve said throughout it could change.” The decision to keep the split point fluid was made both as a practical and creative matter: With the story is shot as one long film, the filmmakers are free to change their minds about where the split makes sense in post-production. “It’s tricky to shoot as two separate films, so we’ve been trying to think of it as one and just shoot as much as possible and once they’ve edited it down, it will feel like there’s a natural cut somewhere in the middle,” Felton explained. Regardless of what might happen in the edit room, was the split, as planned in the scripts, supposed to be Harry and his friends’ kidnapping? “I wouldn’t want to speculate, because I’ll probably get it wrong anyway,” Felton said.
