It Might Be Harder to Erase China From Red Dawn Than You Thought

Earlier this week it was reported that the filmmakers behind Red Dawn were going to replace mentions of China with North Korea, in an effort to make the long-shelved remake more sellable to the “Asian superpower.” It turns out that might be difficult. In a spoiler-heavy review, the website Libertas reveals that the crux of the film deals with China invading America to “collect” on the debt owed by years of borrowing. Kinda hard to imagine North Korea having the same aspirations, isn’t it? [ Libertas via The Playlist ]

‘Iron Man 3’ May Tap Shane Black As Director

Veteran screenwriter could take over franchise from departed Jon Favreau. By Eric Ditzian Shane Black Photo: SGranitz/WireImage One week after news first broke that Shane Black was a top candidate to helm “Iron Man 3” in the wake of Jon Favreau ‘s departure from the franchise, another report suggests the director is now in final negotiations to win the job. Deadline reports that Black is essentially set to direct Robert Downey Jr. in the third “Iron Man” flick but that it’s unclear whether he’ll also pen the script. “That’s not figured out,” an unnamed source told the website. A rep handling the film declined to comment, while Black’s rep hadn’t returned MTV News’ requests for comment by press time. Black only has one directorial credit on his r

‘Iron Man 3’ To Be Directed By Shane Black?

‘Lethal Weapon’ scribe is reportedly ‘in contention’ to helm the movie. By Eric Ditzian “Iron Man” Photo: Paramount Six years after making his directorial debut with the noirish dark comedy “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” Shane Black might be reteaming with Robert Downey Jr. for the actor’s third Marvel superhero adventure. According to The Hollywood Reporter , Black is “in contention” to direct “Iron Man 3.” What’s more, he’d likely get a crack at penning a draft of the script too. Black is far from a lock to take over franchise directing duties from Jon Favreau though, and other filmmakers are being eyed as well. MTV News’ requests for comment to Disney and Black’s rep were not returned as of press time. While the possibility of Black taking on one of Marvel’s most valuable franchises is surprising — he has only one directing credit on his r

I Melt With You Director Mark Pellington Shrugs Off Chilly Sundance Reception

Although it wasn’t quite as universally panned as Dito Montiel’s Son of No One , and no one lost it and shouted at the filmmakers in a post-screening rant , Mark Pellington’s dark bromantic thriller I Melt with You was the most controversially-received film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to land a distribution deal. ( Read Movieline’s assessment of the film and its disastrous first screening .) Hours after it was announced that Magnolia Pictures would release the polarizing film , Movieline caught up with Pellington and screenwriter Glenn Porter to discuss how they’ve been processing the negative reviews, how the deal with Magnolia went down, and what kind of tweaks will be made to the film before its theatrical release.

Jim Carrey To Bring Classic ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’ To Big Screen

Film will be upscale adaptation of popular children’s book. By Kara Warner Jim Carrey Photo: Todd Brown/ MTV News The last time Jim Carrey lit up the big screen, he did so as four different CGI characters in Disney’s animated “A Christmas Carol” reboot. Now, in addition to the recently announced project “Pierre, Pierre,” with “Bruno” director Larry Charles, Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox has lined up the funnyman to star in “Mr. Popper’s Penguins,” based on the classic children’s book of the same name. The film adaptation is said to be an upscale spin on the book, with Carrey in the role of the titular Mr. Popper, now a high-powered businessman who suddenly inherits six penguins. As Popper becomes increasingly attached to his feathered friends, his life unravels and you guessed it wackiness ensues. According to the script synopsis, Popper’s swanky apartment turns into a winter wonderland, and he almost lands in jail. “But thanks to his new charges,” the logline reads, “Popper comes to understand the importance of family human and otherwise.” Fans of the book, written by Richard and Florence Atwater, will note that this proposed film version is a departure from the 1938 original, in which Popper is a poor housepainter who receives the surprise gift of a penguin by mail after writing into a radio broadcast hosted by Antarctic explorer Admiral Drake. Eventually, one penguin turns into 12, and in order to support their expansive brood, the Poppers train the penguins to perform. Perhaps Carrey can convince the filmmakers to reintroduce the painter aspect of Popper’s character, given the actor’s newfound passion for painting, which he has been chronicling via his Twitter account. No word on when production is scheduled to begin, but Mark Waters (“Mean Girls” and “The Spiderwick Chronicles”) is set to direct. Nicki Minaj Is A Top-Five Candidate For ‘Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010’!

Winner will be revealed on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Summit” Sunday at noon. By Shaheem Reid Nicki Minaj Photo: Young Money/Cash Money It is here: As promised, the top-five vote-getters in our poll for “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” will be revealed this week. These are the artists you guys voted for over the past month, and we can’t express enough how overwhelmed we were by your participation in this project. More than 200,000 votes came in, and they were tallied as of midnight Friday. Keep in mind, the unveiling of the names this week are the top five, but in no particular order. The winner of the “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010,” as voted on by the MTV News audience, will be revealed Sunday (July 25) at noon on the “Sucker Free Summit.” Chosen One: Nicki Minaj Rising in the Ranks : Nicki Minaj went from working at Red Lobster to being the red-hot current face of female hip-hop in less time than it takes to complete college. She’s as much an iconic figure for her standout fashion and beauty as she is for tearing up the mic alongside your favorite MCs. Her rabid following has bought into Minaj’s entire package. The hype is backed by true talent, and she’s unique and feisty. And while every photo you see in the press personifies her glamorous life as a Young Money superstar, Minaj is no different from every other MC who has ascended the heights of their genre. The native of New York’s Jamaica, Queens, neighborhood started at the bottom and had to grind her way to the top. First discovered by Lil Wayne on the street-DVD series On the Come Up, Nicki couldn’t get any love from DJs in her hometown, so she moved to Atlanta. It was there she recorded some verses for Weezy’s Gangsta Grillz: Dedication 3 mixtape — singing and rapping on songs such as “Still I Rise” with the rest of Wayne’s then-mostly unknown crop of new talent, including Drake . Nicki also aligned herself with Gucci Mane, adding heavily to her street credibility and profile. While her sexy image was our first impression of Nicki (who can forget that bathing-suit photo in which she paid homage to Lil’ Kim ?), Minaj really found her own lane during the spring of last year with the Beam Me Up Scotty mixtape, which she put together with Atlanta’s DJ Holiday. Nick showed us she has boundless personality on the mic, bringing forth her Barbie persona and all the charismatic outfits, rhyme flows and vocal inflections that go along with it. Records from the tape — “Kill the DJ,” “I Get Crazy” with Lil Wayne and “Itty Bitty Piggy” — bubbled on the streets for months, allowing Nicki to hit the club circuit with her own shows. In the summer of last year, Nick was spotlighted on the Young Money Presents: The America’s Most Wanted Music Festival , and by the fall, seemingly all the guys in music wanted to get with her. Minaj’s career went to the next level when she started turning in show-stealing cameos, which have carried well into this year. Diddy, Robin Thicke, Ludacris, Sean Garrett, Usher, Jadakiss, Trey Songz, Gucci Mane, Sean Kingston and, of course, her Young Money family all know that she’s developed into one of the most versatile performers in hip-hop — and she still hasn’t released her debut album , which is due late this year. Early Insight : “With [my debut] album, I think it’s more important that people get accustomed to seeing a female rapper again,” Nicki said. “People don’t even know what a female rapper does. We’re so not used to seeing it. We don’t get nominated. I need to work [the people] up to accepting a female rapper again and accepting my style and all of that — then the album will come.” Blistering Ballistics : ” Now all these bitches wanna try and be my bestie/ But I take a left and leave ’em hangin’ like a teste/ Trash talk to ’em, then I put ’em in a Hefty/ Runnin’ down the court/ I’m dunkin’ on ’em, Lisa Leslie/ It’s goin’ down, basement/ ‘Friday the 13th,’ guess who’s playin’ Jason?/ Tuck yourself in, you better hold on to ya teddy/ It’s ‘Nightmare on Elm Street,’ and guess who’s playin’ Freddy?” — from Ludacris’ “My Chick Bad” Forecast : Nicki, who is also a member of the Diddy-led all-star Dream Team, didn’t get an overwhelming response for her debut official single, “Massive Attack,” but the misstep did nothing to hurt her popularity. Her follow-up, “Your Love,” is already a #1 hit (with no video yet!). It was a leaked track that the fans loved so much, program directors on radio were forced to add it. Minaj is working on her yet-untitled first album with Young Money and Swizz Beatz. If she continues to attack her own tracks with the fervor she does on her guest appearances, the LP should be a hands-down winner. MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Summit” on Sunday at noon!
