GALLERY: The Fighter, and the Best and Worst of Mark Wahlberg

While his castmates Amy Adams, Christian Bale, and Melissa Leo got Oscar nominations for their roles in The Fighter (out this week in a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack from Paramount Home Entertainment) — with the latter two winning the trophy — Mark Wahlberg’s performance went unheralded. (He did, however, share in the film’s Best Picture nod as one of its producers.) But given the larger-than-life quality that Bale and Leo, in particular, brought to their roles, it seemed like an intentional call on the part of Wahlberg and director David O. Russell to let Wahlberg’s on-screen personality recede a bit so the spotlight could shine elsewhere. Still, he’s just fine in the film, and it inspired me to think of the sublime (and the ridiculous) turns he’s had elsewhere — and no, we’re not counting The Marky Mark Workout in either category.

Is the Bridesmaids Marketing Campaign Doing It Justice?

Movieline’s own Jen Yamato saw Bridesmaids at SXSW and declared it a magnificent crowd-pleaser and the best R-rated comedy since The Hangover . I believe her! But I can’t believe the tone set by the new Bridesmaids trailer, which undersells the movie’s intelligence and goes for cheap romcom laughs. Rage!

Is This Why Alec Baldwin Needs a Vocal Coach for Rock of Ages?

While speaking with Vulture on Monday night, Alec Baldwin revealed that he will be hiring a vocal coach to prepare for his role in Rock of Ages , Adam Shankman’s adaptation of the Broadway musical which will require the actor to sing alongside Tom Cruise and Mary J. Blige. This revelation was surprising, both because the 30 Rock star seems capable of excelling at everything — and because he has already appeared multiple times on Broadway. But that was before Movieline stumbled upon the following video of Baldwin singing at Carnegie Hall.

Help Movieline Caption This Photo of Captain America’s Embarrassing Hostage Situation

If you were hoping that a new photo from Captain America: The First Avenger would mysteriously surface on the Internet this afternoon, you’re in luck. The most recent still features Chris Evans in full Captain America regalia, being held hostage by two leather-clad men (Nazis? Assassins sent from a future Charlie Sheen to destroy all World War II trolls?). Alas, the only way to free the Marvel superhero and save American ideals is to come up with a genius caption for the photo below. Ready… set…

Today in the Mighty Who Have Fallen: Harvey Keitel in The Last Godfather Trailer

I get that once you’ve put yourself through the ringer and taken on some of the most challenging, memorable roles of the last 30 years, that maybe you want to just relax and get paid. That’s fine! I’m sure Harvey Keitel knew exactly what he was getting into when he signed up to do Little Fockers . That said, could he have possibly been paid that much to star in what appears to be South Korea’s answer to Mr. Bean ?
