Roger Deakins on His True Grit Oscar Nod and the End of Film: ‘Next Year Will Be It’

The startling beauty of Joel and Ethan Coen’s Oscar-nominated True Grit — and in most Coen brothers films, for that matter — owes to frequent collaborator and award-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins, who’s lensed all but one of their films since 1991’s Barton Fink . But as much as the nostalgic Western serves as a throwback to simpler times, simpler heroes (and heroines), and a yearning to stick to one’s principles in the face of obsolescence, True Grit could also mark a wistful point in Deakins career — his last film shot on film.

Late Night Highlights: David Letterman and Snooki Bond Over Pink, Fuzzy Slippers

Last night on The Late Show , David Letterman flattered Snooki by trying on the same kind of grotesque footwear that she wears on the Jersey Shore . Elsewhere, Jimmy Kimmel shaved Justin Bieber’s head, Jennifer Aniston talked about the Super Bowl, and Andy Richter outed Conan O’B rien as an abusive boss.

REVIEW: Carancho Delivers Sleek, Stirring Argentine Noir

For the first long stretch of Carancho , Pablo Trapero’s elegantly drawn, of-the-moment noir, the camera swerves and wends behind, around and in front of its subjects, brokering space and mapping their movements with smooth, sympathetic constancy. It follows Sosa (Ricardo Darín) and it follows Luján (Martina Gusman), two professionals who cruise the streets of Buenos Aires at night with a vaguely overlapping purpose. Luján is a paramedic and Sosa is a personal injury lawyer. In Argentina, traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for people under 35, so their nights are long.

Oscar-Nominated God of Love Director Luke Matheny Offers 4 Must-See Films for Valentine’s Day

It’s hard to remember, but there was a time when romantic comedies weren’t viewed with the same contempt as torture porn and Adam Sandler. This is a genre that saw the likes of Preston Struges, Billy Wilder and Woody Allen create some of the most iconic films Hollywood history; now it’s a genre overrun by Dennis Dugans and Robert Luketics, filmmakers seemingly content to stomp on whatever happy, “boy meets girl” memories you might have. If the Hollywood machine has got you down in this lead-up to Valentine’s Day, there is some hope: Resist buying a ticket for No Strings Attached (or, shiver, Just Go With It ) and search out Luke Matheny’s God of Love instead.

9 Milestones in the Evolution of Adam Sandler

Adam Sandler has one of the most frustrating career arcs of any actor working today. Maybe it would have been better if Punch Drunk Love were never made. Then we wouldn’t know what Sandler is capable of and movies like this weekend’s Just Go With It wouldn’t be half as disappointing. On the other hand, audiences seem to just love it when he phones it in… so why even try? You can always trace a direct line through a handful of important roles (if not always the best roles) to illustrate what led to an actor’s current success — and/or give us a clue why something like Just Go With It exists, As such, let’s look at eight performances that trace the evolution of one Adam Richard Sandler.

Is Lady Gaga Ready for Her Desperately Seeking Susan Moment?

Twitter will tell you we’re in the middle of #BornThisWayFriday, the climactic release date for Lady Gaga’s new single (off the same-named album) “Born This Way.” It’s a fun, if not immediately identifiable jam for Lady Gaga, whose singles have been more sinister, throaty, and clever than this. Still, it’s apparent that the pop star born Stefani Germanotta has matched her idol Madonna’s early career in terms of impact and consumer devotion, except in one respect: She hasn’t made a decadent foray into film, a la Desperately Seeking Susan . Is it time for Gaga’s cinematic debut?
