Berlinale Dispatch: Zachary Quinto, Margin Call Top Fest’s First Full Day

The problem with having festival commitments is that there are days when you can manage to see only one movie before deadline, while your colleagues are seeing two, three or — heaven forbid — more. But the sting, or at least the vague feeling of inadequacy, is lessened when that one movie exceeds your expectations. Margin Call is a thriller of sorts (though it’s also something of a comedy, albeit a grim one) set in the early days of the financial crisis, a fictionalized but all too believable account of one crucial day at a Wall Street investment firm. It’s also the debut feature of writer-director J.C. Chandor, and while it hits a few false notes, it’s still a remarkably assured piece of filmmaking. You may not think you want to sit through a nondocumentary film about the financial meltdown — I sure didn’t. But Margin Call, like money itself, is weirdly seductive; it wheedles you into caring about characters you don’t particularly like, without ever expecting you to approve of their behavior.

Quickly, Let’s Name 50 Films That Can Never Be Remade and Save Their Souls

The dust has settled and it looks like they’re really going to remake Logan’s Run . With Ryan Gosling. Yep. You might remember that I mocked the original Logan’s Run the other day . I was positive we didn’t need to revisit it, actually! And yet, Logan Run ‘s bastardization is a minor loss compared to what could be. The occasion calls for a rally: Let’s name 50 movies that can’t be remade for the following reasons: 1) They’re perfect the way they are and belong in a time capsule; 2) they will seem grotesque in a 2011 update. Please add your own. Together, we can save some lives.

Today in Porn Parodies Gone Wrong: Ghostbusters, Elvis XXX Death Threats

If there’s one thing we love at Movieline HQ, it’s ridiculous porn parodies . Who is the audience for this stuff? “You know, The Human Centipede was great, but what it really needed was more badly-lit exploitative shots of female bodies!” Anyway. In Movieline’s neverending quest to cover all facets of this burgeoning sub-industry, here’s your latest round-up for Thursday, Feb. 10. Have you heard about the Elvis Presley porn parody that is actually drawing death threats?

Underage youth defy their feuding families by falling madly in love, sleep together before marriage and end up dying tragically because of crossed signals. What a dud of a story! You know what it needs to dress it up? Garden gnomes.

Bad Movies We Love: 54

We’ve slaughtered the likes of James Franco , Annette Bening , Natalie Portman , Nicole Kidman , and Christian Bale with the “Bad Movies We Love” treatment, and this week’s Oscar contender up for tickle torture is Mark Ruffalo — who had a slight part in a very slight movie called 54 . Hooray for Mark! Un-hooray for this movie: It takes place at the famous Studio 54 in 1978, but you’ll swear it’s about dressing up for a glowstick party in 1998 (inside a future IKEA ). So get your Andy Warhol wig, your Ryan Phillippe nipples, and your Neve Campbell cry-kisses out of storage. It’s time for the Hustle!

REVIEW: Channing Tatum Can’t Seem to Fly in The Eagle Despite Help from Jamie Bell

In period films, it always helps to have someone built to carry a sword, and Channing Tatum clearly hasn’t missed a workout for the past two years so he fits the bill in that regard. What he’s missing in The Eagle is that spark of the insane — the slightly lunatic fever that makes us unable to keep our eyes off him. Instead, he’s so distant, he looks slightly baked. It’s supposed to be a combination of the thousand-yard-stare and lost in a state of continual flashback that director Kevin Macdonald cuts to reveal Tatum’s “Inner Pain.” Instead, the star seems irritated that his buzz will burn off before a new batch of edibles arrives.

The 13 Most Intriguing Revelations of The New Yorker’s Paul Haggis/Scientology Expose

So you might have heard writer-director Paul Haggis caused a bit of a stir when he left the Church of Scientology in 2009. His defection, he said at the time, was attributable to the church’s reluctance to declare its tolerance toward gays and lesbians — an institutional blind spot exacerbated by its refusal in 2008 to condemn California’s Prop 8. But as a much-anticipated new profile in The New Yorker proves, there is a little more to the story. Like 24,000 words more.

‘Hell to the No!’: Gleebasing, Super Bowl Edition

If certain drug users are most at risk of overdosing on their first hit after a period of sobriety, then the epic midseason premiere of Glee , “The Sue Sylvester Shuffle,” certainly sent some Glee basers into the hospital. (Located right behind the Breadstix and across the street from the intersection where Schue cried in his car.) Not only was the over-sized episode a shock to the previously Glee less system, but it was a new strain of Ryan Murphy drug, cut with Katy Perry singles, fake breasts, BMX bikes and Mel Gibson jokes. Whatever happened to the pure Glee that they aired back in 2010? Now that was the good sh*t.
