The Change-Up: ‘No Dumber Than a Movie About Talking Apes’

Judging from Twitter buzz, The Change-Up is either a really funny (and really dirty) R-rated comedy with marketing that does it a great disservice, or the terrible body swap disaster that the marketing points toward. Perhaps that’s why this new promotion for the Universal laugher gets right to the core of things: Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds are funny and handsome, and you probably really like them. Translation: let them sell the movie! And sell they do: “It’s no dumber than a movie about a bunch of talking apes.”

Another day, another hair-raising poster that terrible parents let their kids see. This one’s a closeup of an astronaut presumably waiting to perish in Apollo 18 , a disturbing “found-footage” mockumentary in the style of The Blair Witch Project and The Real Housewives of New Jersey . Handle it?

It’s Only Monday, But the Trailer for Arena May Be The Best Worst Thing You Watch All Week

Back in April of 2010 — the same day Paramount started looking for a writer to reboot Mighty Mouse (true) — it was announced that Samuel L. Jackson and Kellan Lutz would co-star in Deathgames , about a “young man (Lutz) who is kidnapped and forced into the savage world of a modern gladiator arena, where men fight to the death for entertainment of the online masses. Jackson orchestrates the games, overseeing them from his computer lair with the help of twin ladies who see to his every desire.” Sounds like Gamer . How did it turn out?

Lars Von Trier Upset Norway Mass Murderer Loved Dogville

“I feel badly about thinking that Dogville , which in my eyes is one of my most successful films, should have been a kind of script for him. It’s horrific,” director Lars von Trier said about the fact that Dogville was revealed to be one of Norwegian camp killer Anders Behring Breivik’s favorite films. “[I]f it was an inspiration, I’m sorry that I made it. But of course I have educational purposes with my films, even if I hesitate to admit it, and my views are the complete opposite of Breivik and his deeds.” Dogville ends with Nicole Kidman’s character ordering the massacre of the village that abused her. Having revealed his inner thespian in 2008’s JCVD , Belgian martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme wants to be taken more seriously as an actor. Speaking with Box Office Magazine — ironically, to promote his latest actioner, the hit man thriller Assassination Games (in limited release July 29) — the Muscles from Brussels cited Clint Eastwood as a career role model: “I love action films, and my fans expect action films, but I can act! And I really want a chance to show what I can do.” Note to Jean-Claude: The first step in being taken more seriously? Stop making movies with titles like Assassination Games .
