Meet Stephenie Meyer’s New ‘Eclipse’ Vampires In ‘Bree Tanner’

Several newborns from ‘The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner’ could appear in the ‘Twilight’ film on June 30. By Terri Schwartz Stephenie Meyer’s “The Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner” Photo: Hachette Book Group With so much attention on the fact that “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” swept the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, it is almost easy to forget that there was another exciting “Twilight”-related event this weekend: the release of “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” on Saturday. If you couldn’t get your hands on Stephenie Meyer’s new novella in the store over the past two days, it’s available to read online for free from Monday (June 7) until July 5 at BreeTanner.com . “Short Second Life” is more than just a companion story for “The Twilight Saga.” Meyer gave Jodelle Ferland and director David Slade the backstory of this character, so it seems pretty certain that some of Bree’s side of the story will make its way into the film when it opens on June 30. While Bree and Victoria’s henchman Riley were characters that readers met from Bella’s perspective in “Eclipse,” “Short Second Life” introduces a few key members of the newborn army that may get some screen time in the upcoming film. Bree Tanner After running away from home because her father beat her, Bree was so hungry, all Riley had to do was promise her a burger to trick her into becoming a vampire. She’s not sure if she was 15 or 16 when she was turned, three months before the battle in “Eclipse.” Raoul and Kristie Of the twenty-odd newborns Bree is living with in “Short Second Life,” these are the two that are most likely to appear in the movie. They each lead their own “gang” of newborns, with Raoul controlling most of the male vampires and Kristie directing most of the females. Neither is physically described in the book, so it’s not clear exactly what they look like, but from the exclusive photo MTV received of the newborns following Riley out of a body of water, it can be inferred that they are the male and female vampires flanking him. Freaky Fred The two newborns that Bree befriends in “Short Second Life” are a bit less likely to make it into the final cut of “Eclipse.” Fred, a tall, muscular vampire with curly blond hair who Bree guesses to be around college-age, has the special ability to be able to repulse those around him, and can slip by unnoticed by making it so that no one can lay their eyes on him. He protects Bree this way and leaves the rest of the newborn pack before they confront the Cullens in the final battle. Diego The clear-headed newborn teams up with Bree early on in “Short Second Life” and the two develop a chaste but sweet romantic relationship over the course of one day. Diego is older than most of the others (by a few months) and not as savagely driven by his thirst. He’s described as having “dark, dense, curly hair, big, wide eyes and really full lips,” and — like all of Meyer’s vampires — he’s very, very pretty. SPOILER : His second life barely lasts longer than hers does, and he doesn’t make it to the final battle against the Cullens. A few other newborns named in the novella: Kevin, one of Raoul’s lackeys, and Sara and Jen, who follow Kristie. None of them received physical descriptions in the novella, so unless they are referred to by name, it will be hard to pin them down amid the rest of the army. There is also a vampire whom Bree calls “the blond Spider-man kid” because he talks about the comic book hero and climbs walls like him in one scene. As anyone who has read “Eclipse” knows, Victoria’s army doesn’t fare well against the Cullens, and neither does Bree. Still, her novella offers a unique opportunity for fans to get to know those that had once just been nameless enemies, making for a more poignant battle when the third “Twilight” film hits the big screen starting June 30. ‘Harry Potter’ Clip At MTV Movie Awards Hints At Dark, Intense ‘Deathly Hallows’

Major portion of the final chapters will focus on Harry/ Voldemort relationship, footage suggests. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I” Photo: Warner Bros. With every new glimpse of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” it becomes more and more apparent that the final two chapters of the Potter story will be the darkest and most intense yet. The latest clip, which debuted during the MTV Movie Awards Sunday, showed that a major portion of the first of the final two Potter films will be focused on the ominous relationship between Harry and He Who Must Not Be Named, Voldemort. It’s fitting, given that over the course of roughly a decade (seven books, soon-to-be eight films) Harry Potter has lived in the shadow of the dark wizard who killed his parents. The clip opened with the always foreboding-looking Voldemort (played by Ralph Fiennes) standing on an unknown peak, deep in evil thought. His voice is heard plotting Potter’s death, once again: “I have to be the one to kill [Harry Potter].” Cut to fast-paced imagery of Harry, Ron and Hermione at various places on their journey to track down the remaining Horcruxes and the Deathly Hallows; various action sequences that hint at the possible impending doom for our hero; an intense and emotional show-down between Harry and his best friend, Ron. Though we were hoping for a shot of the long-awaited Hermione and Ron kiss, we have to settle for the quick shot of Harry and Ginny’s romantic embrace before they part ways. While we know the studio is hesitant to reveal any spoilers for the movie, we still hoped to see a few more happy moments: Bill and Fleur’s wedding, Harry being named godfather of Lupin and Tonks’ baby, etc. What did you think of the new spot? ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Finale: Nicole Scherzinger Wins It All

Evan Lysacek and Erin Andrews settle for second and third, respectively, during action-packed finale. By Kara Warner Ten weeks of fierce competition, a diverse cast of headline-making celebrities and countless can’t-believe-they-stayed-on costumes all boiled down to Tuesday night’s (May 25) “Dancing With the Stars” season finale. And after two hours and a slew of great performances, the coveted mirror-ball trophy was bestowed, as many predicted, upon Nicole Scherzinger and her partner, Derek Hough. The season-ten favorites beat out second-place finishers Olympian Evan Lysacek and Anna Trebunskaya and third-place duo Erin Andrews and Maksim Chmerkovskiy. The winners kicked off the evening’s “favorite dance” round with the first of a trio of fiery Argentine tangos (all three dancing couples performed the Argentine tango for that round), which garnered rave reviews from the judges and sealed their place in the final two. But it was their final, high-energy jive to Ike & Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” that clinched the win. Their performance prompted veteran ballroom judge Len Goodman to call the competition 20 minutes prior to the winner being announced — and before Lysacek and Trebunskaya had taken the floor. “There is only one winner of ‘Dancing With the Stars’ — it should be you,” he boldly stated. The always effusive Bruno Tonioli agreed: “This has been the best season of ‘Dancing With the Stars’ ever! You two have produced the most inventive, stunning dances I’ve ever seen! This [dance] was the crowning glory of an amazing season.” Carrie Ann Inaba said simply, “You set this place on fire.” As for Scherzinger and Hough, they were over the moon. “I’m just so flippin’ happy right now!” the Pussycat Dolls frontwoman declared. The show’s other highlights, in addition to great performances by Lysacek and Andrews and a few teary goodbyes, included Buzz Aldrin’s brief return to the dance floor in a sparkly jumpsuit and Niecy Nash and Pamela Anderson “who’s the sexiest?” showstopper. The cheesiest moment was easily when “The Bachelor” couple Jake Pavelka and his fianc

Crystal Bowersox’s ‘Up To The Mountain’: Behind The ‘American Idol’ Cover

Simon Cowell calls Patty Griffin cover ‘the best performance and the song of the night.’ By Eric Ditzian Crystal Bowersox Performs On “American Idol” May 25 Photo: FOX On Tuesday (May 25) night, “American Idol” fans got their first true taste of what kind of recording artist Crystal Bowersox might be, as she performed the single she’ll release if she ends up winning the competition. The song is called “Up to the Mountain (MLK Song),” originally written by Patty Griffin, and MamaSox absolutely killed it. Sitting on a stool with her guitar, the song started slowly and, from the first note, perfectly fit the singer’s style. Her raw vocal power was on full display, a soul- and gospel- and folk-tinged vibe that establishes her as a sort of combination of Janis Joplin and Tracy Chapman for the 21st century. Her connection to the lyrics — inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr.’s iconic 1968 “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech — was unmistakable as she sang, “Sometimes I feel like I’ve been nothing but tired/ And I’ll be working till the day I expire.” This wasn’t the first time the song was performed on the “Idol” stage. Back in 2007, Kelly Clarkson and Jeff Beck busted out the tune during the “Idol Gives Back” charity effort. Susan Boyle also recorded the song for her debut album, I Dreamed a Dream. And after Bowersox’s take on the track, the judges had a hard time avoiding a sort of coronation moment. “You are in a league of your own,” said Ellen DeGeneres. Randy Jackson echoed that sentiment. “This is what this show is about,” he said. “An amazing song by an amazing singer. I’m telling you what, I’m so proud of you, man. This is one of the greatest performances and one of your best moments at the perfect time on this show.” And then it was time for Simon Cowell’s final critique of his “Idol” career, as he’s leaving the show after this season to jumpstart a new talent show on Fox called “The X Factor.” He did not hold back. “I thought that was by far the best performance and the song of the night,” he said. “And since this is going to be the final critique I’m ever going to give, I would just like to say that was outstanding.” What did you think of Crystal’s “Up to the Mountain”?
