Mr. B’s Joybox Express: Modern Minstrels Haul Piano 300 Miles by Bicycle

Photo: Mr. B’s Joybox Express Tonight is the finale of a summer tour for Mr. B’s Joybox Express. Blues & boogie-woogie pianist Mark Lincoln Braun (a.k.a. Mr. B) has been pedalling his custom-designed, piano-tricycle nearly 300 miles across Michigan, in what is described as “one of the longest human powered piano moves in history.” The tricycle hauling Braun’s 160 kg (352 pound) acoustic ‘joybox’ (an early American term for the piano) was made by Nobilette Cycles , who also craft handmade custom bikes, such as racing frames. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Show creator confirms that original star will reunite with her pals after July 13 finale. By Jocelyn Vena Lauren Conrad Photo: Jason LaVeris/ Getty Images Fans have been wondering whether Lauren Conrad, the original star of “The Hills,” would be back for one more rendezvous before the show ends forever July 13. A rep for the show confirmed to MTV News that LC will be back for more of “The Hills,” making an appearance on the live show after “The Hills” series finale. LC’s former “Hills” co-star and current “The City” star Whitney Port tweeted her excitement about the news, writing, “So excited to reunite with all the hillsies!” Show creator Adam DiVello first broke the news on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show Tuesday, revealing, “Lauren Conrad will be at the finale event along with Whitney Port and the whole entire cast. “It will be a big party,” he added. “We have some stories being paid off in the finale that I think the viewers will find pretty exciting. Everybody’s coming at peace with the stories we’ve been following. I think a few of them definitely found happiness and found what they were looking for.” Fans will certainly be happy to see LC take one last bow with her “Hills” pals. “It will be an exciting ending,” DiVello promised. “We definitely have a couple of surprises up our sleeve that the cast don’t even know about!” Earlier this year, Audrina Patridge and Kristin Cavallari hoped for a return from LC. “With her coming back, it’ll be like our older sister coming back and giving us advice,” Patridge said. “It would be fun. It would be nice to have her come back.” Cavallari added: “The last episode, she comes back, and we all kind of rekindle and, you know, spend our last moment together before it’s all over. I think it would be amazing if she came back. I think it would be great.” Are you excited to see LC return? Lee DeWyze ‘Can’t Complain’ About ‘Beautiful Day’ Debut Sales

‘This is the first season we did a cover song for the finale, whatever part that has to do with it,’ ‘Idol’ champ speculates. By James Montgomery Lee DeWyze Photo: MTV News Lee DeWyze’s reign as “American Idol” champ may have gotten off to a less-than-stellar start with the #12 debut of his coronation single on Billboard ‘s Digital Songs chart. DeWyze’s “Beautiful Day” sold around 100,000 copies, nearly 25 percent less than last year’s champ, Kris Allen, did with his post-“Idol” single, “No Boundaries.” But DeWyze isn’t ready to turn in his crown just yet — far from it, in fact. “You can’t complain about that, regardless of what it is,” DeWyze told MTV News. “But this is the first season that we did a cover song for the finale, and that’s obviously different from past seasons, whatever part that has to do with it. … There [were] things presented, and, you know, that was the right song for the moment, I felt. And I’m glad I did it.” While DeWyze’s version of the U2 tune hasn’t exactly lit the charts on fire, a #12 debut is nothing to sneeze at. And according to Nielsen SoundScan, four of his other “Idol” covers — “Hallelujah,” “The Boxer,” “Everybody Hurts” and “Simple Man” — charted in the top 200. His duet with runner-up Crystal Bowersox on “Falling Slowly” also made the charts. So it’s a solid, if slightly underwhelming, beginning for the new champ, one that he hopes to build on with the release of his post-“Idol” album , which is already shaping up to be a far different affair than anything his fans got to hear on the show. Because, honestly, DeWyze is getting a little tired of playing covers … he’s ready to make his own music. “I’m definitely going to have things on the album that you probably haven’t heard from me on the show,” he said. “It’s my time to be who I am now, and express that through an album. And it’s going to be awesome, it’s going to be fun and I’m really looking forward to it. This is what I’ve always wanted to do.” Are you excited for Lee’s debut album? Tell us in the comments! ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Lee Wins The ‘Season Of The Girl’

Joe Cocker, Paula Abdul and other random guests can’t distract from a lackluster season nine. By Jim Cantiello “American Idol” wrapped up “The Season of the Girl” by handing the “Idol” crown to a boy. Season nine really was as inept as we all thought. Sorry Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox , but Wednesday night’s two-hour finale was really all about Simon Cowell . With the exception of David Cook and Adam Lambert , most of the past “Idol” favorites showed up — even ones Simon supposedly hates — to say goodbye to the guy who helped make them moderately successful. (Some crackpot audition rejects also performed with Dane Cook. It was supposed to make Simon squirm, and he did … along with the rest of America.) Then Paula Abdul returned to the “Idol” stage in a bizarre appearance that can only be described as part roast, part intervention. “Idol” producers booked lots of special guest stars from the ’70s and ’80s to duet with the top 12: Alice Cooper, Chicago, Joe Cocker, Darryl Hall and John Oates, the Bee Gees. It was one Charo away from being an episode of “The Love Boat.” Producers also double-dipped into the ’90s Relics bin by inviting Alanis Morissette to duet with Crystal on a G-rated “You Oughta Know” and Christina Aguilera to perform with the top six girls for six seconds before booting them from the stage so should could sing her new 18-minute-long ballad. The only contemporary artists were previous Idols. A very fierce Carrie Underwood served up “Undo It” and Kris Allen rocked his new single, “Yo, Seacrest, Your Microphone Is on During My Performance and That’s Annoying.” Kris was also on hand to give Lee and Crystal their new custom-designed Ford Fiestas. Interesting side note: The Ford Fiesta is a fraction of the cost of the cars Kris and Adam won last year. Even the sponsors realized this season sucked. The night’s biggest surprise was Casey James and Bret Michaels’ duet. I’m still not sure what was more shocking: the fact that Bret Michaels was onstage even though he’s still recovering from a life-threatening brain hemorrhage, or the fact that Casey James was one of the best performers of the night. After Janet Jackson showed off a short, slicked-back ‘do and General Larry Plant and William Hung showed off a lack of shame, Seacrest announced the winner the way Maury reveals paternity tests. Lee DeWyze, you ARE the father. Do you agree with the results? Do you think a girl can ever win “Idol” again? What was your favorite moment of the two-hour finale? Why Adam Lambert, David Cook Were Absent From ‘American Idol’ Finale

Cook had a previous engagement, while there are reportedly numerous reasons for Lambert’s absence from the ‘Idol’ stage. By Gil Kaufman Adam Lambert Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images It was an unprecedented gathering of “American Idol” royalty. On Wednesday night, all but one of the former “American Idol” winners took to the Nokia Theatre stage to sing a song in honor of departing judge and mentor Simon Cowell. Lined up side by side were Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia, Jordin Sparks, Kris Allen and Taylor Hicks giving a rousing performance of Delta Goodrem’s “Together We Are One.” The “Idol” icons — mostly dressed in black — were joined by nearly two dozen finalists from past seasons, including such favorites as Jason Castro, David Archuleta, Michael Johns, Bo Bice and Elliot Yamin. But where was season seven winner David Cook , the only champ missing from the crew? Cook explained that he was unable to attend because of a previous commitment to a cancer charity event in Kansas City. During his time on the show, Cook famously paid tribute to his late brother, who was battling the disease during the singer’s “Idol” run. He did tweet his congratulations to winner Lee DeWyze though, writing, “Congrats to Lee Dewyze! So sorry I couldn’t be there to see all my fellow idols. I’m there in spirit!” Also conspicuously absent was last year’s runner-up, Adam Lambert . Earlier in the day, a report surfaced that Lambert had been dropped from the number because he failed to attend rehearsals. Later it was reported that he’d been ordered by his doctor to rest his vocals. It was also reported that he’d not been invited to attend. Lambert vigorously denied all those rumors in a fiery series of tweets , explaining, “Would have loved 2 have been at the Idol Finale to wish Simon farewell and support the finalists, but this tour for my fans is my priority,” elaborating later, “I have now just been made aware of more gossip and rumormill: First of all, I was never asked to appear on the finale in any capacity. 2nd: I DID come down w a throat bug most likely caught on my flight back from this past weekend’s concert in Boston.” He also explained that he’d been put on vocal rest on Tuesday after tour rehearsals. Lambert also lashed out at what he considered the irresponsible reports on his absence. “Sad that I’m forced to defend myself bout situation no one pointing fingers knew any factual details about. I’m working so hard on this tour!! All i ever heard was: ‘you’ve not been asked to perform on finale. Would you like to sit in the audience?’ Me: sorry-Too much work to do today.” Much of the drama was created by PopEater.com, which claimed an exclusive earlier in the day on the “bedlam” behind Lambert’s alleged no-show . A rep for Lambert lambasted that report, telling EW.com that the story about Lambert failing to show up to rehearsals was full of “false information.” Spokesperson Roger Widynowski said that like most “Idol” finalists, Lambert was approached by producers about being part of the alumni tribute to Cowell, but that the singer came down with a case of laryngitis over the weekend, and with his “Glam Nation” tour set to begin on June 4, he was placed on vocal rest. “He was never confirmed to do the show. He never skipped rehearsal,” said Widynowski. Though he disagreed with claims that it was diva behavior that led to Lambert’s absence, Widynowski did confirm that the glammy singer sent out a provocative tweet on May 19 announcing that he would not be at the finale. “Unfortunately not performing on ‘Idol’ Finale,” Lambert wrote. “Guess they have plenty of artists booked.” Related Videos ‘American Idol’ Finale Highlights ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds Related Photos ‘American Idol’ Season-Nine Performances Related Artists Adam Lambert David Cook

Bret Michaels Offers Advice To ‘American Idol’ Winner Lee DeWyze

‘Enjoy what you’re doing, live in the moment,’ Poison frontman says backstage at the finale. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic The only thing Lee DeWyze wanted to do in life is play music. Now that he’s the new American Idol , the former paint-store clerk from Mt. Prospect, Illinois, will finally get his chance to do just that. He got a big leg up on Wednesday night at the two-hour “Idol” finale, when surprise guest-star Bret Michaels — who joined third-place finisher Casey James for an unannounced duet on Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” — offered some sage career advice. Speaking to reporters backstage, Michaels, who performed at the Nokia Theatre without telling his doctors, applauded loudly when it was announced that DeWyze had won his battle with season-long front-runner Crystal Bowersox. “Here’s the thing: Enjoy what you’re doing, live in the moment, get good people around you, and you’ll have a long career,” said Michaels, who was at the “Idol” finale despite a series of recent health scares that include a brain hemorrhage and a recently discovered hole in his heart . “That’s really the truth. That’s what makes it work. Believe in yourself. If someone is pushing you down the wrong path, [say], ‘I gotta do it my way,’ ” he said. “I also would tell him … make sure you love what you do. And don’t ever become jaded. If you become jaded, you lose your soul.” What advice would you give Lee DeWyze? Share it in the comments. Crystal Bowersox On ‘American Idol’ Outcome: ‘We Both Win’

‘My life is never going to be the same, and I’m ready for all of it,’ she says backstage after the finale. By Kelley L. Carter Crystal Bowersox Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — Don’t cry for Crystal Bowersox. Before Ryan Seacrest announced Lee DeWyze as the new American Idol , the single mom said she knew she wouldn’t be taking home the top prize. “I knew Lee was going to win,” she said backstage, minutes after the finale ended. “People seem to be surprised by that. But I had a feeling. I couldn’t be happier for him. He deserves every minute of this. There wasn’t really a reason why [I thought I wouldn’t win]. It was just something that I felt and I knew, and I’m fine with that. Before the show … I had this strange sense of peace and calm. I’ve been that way through the whole season. If you haven’t noticed, I’m just mellow. I was ready and willing … for the outcome. We both win. It’s not win or lose; it’s winner and non-winner. Both of us are going to have very successful careers, and we’re going to be friends for a long time.” For Bowersox, winning was performing alongside Alanis Morissette and Joe Cocker. She also said she was moved by the tributes for Simon Cowell . “Joe Cocker is a living legend, and every noise, grunt that came out of him, every fiber in my being felt it,” she said. “He didn’t give me any advice, but he kept calling me ‘Angel.’ He said, ‘I know your name is Crystal, but I want to call you Angel.’ And I’m like, ‘That’s fine. You can call me whatever you want. You’re Joe Cocker!’ ” Bowersox said she learned a lot about herself during the “American Idol” experience. The most important lesson? “I can walk in heels — downstairs, nonetheless,” she said, joking about her Tuesday night performance, where she wobbled a bit in high heels. “I’ve learned a lot about myself and I’ve learned a lot about the business. I already knew who I was, but I’m picking the things that I like and adding to it. My life is never going to be the same, and I’m ready for all of it.” Up next, Bowersox says she’s going to go “hug my baby boy and get back to living.” She’ll start to prepare for the summer tour and also plans to get to work on her album. “Now the real work begins,” she said.
