MTV’s ‘True Life’ To Explore Occupy Wall Street Movement

MTV embeds in Zuccotti Park to get real story in ‘True Life: I’m Occupying Wall Street’ airing November 5 at 6 p.m. ET. By Gil Kaufman Bryan in “True Life: I’m Occupying Wall Street” Photo: MTV News It’s one thing to watch footage of the Occupy Wall Street protests on TV and hear the nightly news pundits give their two cents on the global movement. But what if you could live among the protesters for weeks at a time and get a real sense of how the Occupy movement is taking shape and why it’s become a phenomenon? MTV did just that, embedding with the protesters for an upcoming “True Life” special set to air Saturday, November 5, at 6 p.m. ET. “True Life: I’m Occupying Wall Street” will visit the financial district sit-in and profile a group of 20somethings who’ve pitched their tents amid the skyscrapers of Wall Street to see how they’re feeling about the event. The special episode will take you to the front lines as MTV cameras follow four young people who get swept up in the political movement that has quickly grown into a global phenomenon. Viewers will be introduced to Bryan, one of the leaders of the Occupy sanitation team. You’ll watch as he steels himself against a potential fight with the city when he fears that their request to clean the park is an excuse to evict the protesters. “This needs to happen now, or it’s over,” Bryan is seen telling his fellow protesters about cleaning up the park before the city’s mandatory deadline, which helps motivate them to collect trash, sweep up and scrub graffiti from the ground with hand-held brushes. “As worried as I was,” he says, “it was amazing to see that as it really came down to the wire, people were willing to just do whatever it took to get the park clean.” The protests come at a time when the future seems grim not just for the millions who’ve been out of work and looking for jobs for several years, but for a younger generation that is just entering their prime earning years. In fact, 72 percent of young people surveyed by MTV over the past two years are afraid they won’t live up to their potential, with nearly three-quarters of those age 18 to 29 feeling “things are unfair for my generation because we have to start our careers during this economic crisis.” They’ve found that the game has changed and the old equation for success that promised that college plus extracurriculars, summer internships and huge student loans would lead to a fulfilling job that helps pay off those loans — just doesn’t compute. Many feel as if the rules have been altered on them and that they’ve been cheated. David Banner , Tom Morello , Kanye West and Talib Kweli have also joined the Occupy Wall Street protesters throughout their monthlong demonstration. The problem for young protesters like Bryan is who do they turn to? Their parents, the government? Many believe it no longer matters who’s in charge in Washington because none of those big money politicians has any answers. That might be why this group sees Occupy as a kind of war their generation must wage, one that might not end soon, but which they support because it allows them to speak out against corporate America and voice the concerns they have about not being able to find work. That also explains why nearly half (45 percent) have postponed a major life milestone (marriage, having children) because of the economy or their employment situation. Click through to “Voices From Occupy Wall Street” — our interactive photo gallery — and get to know 20 young demonstrators’ motivations, hopes and goals. A recent MTV survey of young adults (ages 18 to 29) about economic conditions, the government and its impact on their generation found that 93 percent feel that the current economic situation is having a personal effect on them; 72 percent don’t trust the government to take care of their well-being. A whopping 76 percent said they’re worried about the future of our country. And they’re not just fretting about themselves. More than 62 percent said they feared for their parents’ ability to retire in this economy and 66 percent said they wish there was some leader, outside of a political one, who could speak to their generation’s needs. “I feel stressed out about it,” 18-year-old Adalee recently told MTV News. “As a [Hispanic] college student relying on financial aid to get through school … and with all the budget cuts, it’s a stressful situation … But if the economic crisis worsens or is not resolved soon, it won’t matter how much financial aid we get, more than likely it won’t be enough to cover tuition.” The nation has watched this anxiety amplified by Occupy demonstrations across the country, as a small gathering of activists in Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan has spread across the globe spanning hundreds of cities. When it came to those MTV surveyed, among the 69 percent who said they were aware of the Occupy protests, 57 percent supported the movement. “True Life” viewers will also meet college students Kait and Caitlin, who are so worried that they won’t be able to find jobs after graduation that they set out to recruit their friends to join the cause as they work to keep spirits high among the occupants. The episode will also spotlight Jen, an experienced protestor who struggles to strike a balance between organizing a successful anti-Afghanistan war demonstration and keeping her job as a paralegal. What do you think about the Occupy Wall Street movement? Let us know in the comments.

Zachary Quinto Announces He’s A ‘Gay Man’

‘Star Trek’ actor had dodged rumors before making revelation in New York magazine. By Gil Kaufman Zachary Quinto Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images For years, “Star Trek” actor Zachary Quinto dodged questions about his sexuality, preferring to keeping his private life private and let his work on TV shows such as “Heroes” and movies like the recent “What’s Your Number” do the talking. Then, unexpectedly, he offhandedly outed himself in an interview with New York magazine, while discussing his starring role last year in the restaging of the early AIDS-era drama “Angels in America.” Quinto told the magazine that his eight-month role in the epic Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tony Kushner was “the most challenging thing I’ve ever done as an actor and the most rewarding”; he took on the grueling role of Louis Ironson, a character who walks out on his AIDS-stricken boyfriend. “And at the same time, as a gay man, it made me feel like there’s still so much work to be done, and there’s still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed.” Quinto, who has been outspoken on gay rights issues in the past, told The New York Times last year that even though blogs were full of speculation about his orientation, he preferred “not to feed the rumor mill with either substantiation or dismissal.” But the events of the past year appear to have had an impact on him and Quinto seemed comfortable at this point announcing his orientation. Thinking about how the last few months have seen gay marriage legalized in New York while also marking the recent suicide of bullied gay teen Jamey Rodemeyer , Quinto said, “And again, as a gay man I look at that and say there’s a hopelessness that surrounds it, but as a human being I look at it and say ‘Why? Where’s this disparity coming from, and why can’t we as a culture and society dig deeper to examine that?’ We’re terrified of facing ourselves.” He was also glad to be in town promoting the financial crisis thriller “Margin Call” — the first feature from his production company, Before the Door Pictures — while hundreds of Occupy Wall Street protesters are camped out in New York’s Zuccotti Park . “The timing couldn’t be more impeccable for us to try to create a dialogue, which is exactly why we made the movie in the first place,” he said. While he’s in town to promote the film, Quinto said he planned to go down and see the protesters to get a flavor of the sit-in. “As a left-leaning Democrat, I feel a sense of resonance with their position,” he said. “But as a citizen of this country, I feel deeply unsettled that people are rising up in movements against each other. It feels like we’re missing the mark. … The bottom line is we’re all f—ed, and we’re all in this together.”

Jon Gosselin to Kate: Get a Real Life!

Jon Gosselin is speaking out in a (mercifully) rare interview, telling Rumor Fix exactly how he feels about ex-wife Kate and life in general nowadays. His advice for his ex, who recently complained about life? “Reality TV is not a career. Get back to a normal life – a simple life. Provide for your family.” Ouch, that’s gotta hurt, Kate! Jon Gosselin Interview Jon, who gave up TV and is enjoying work as a computer support engineer, is responding to Kate Gosselin whining about the cancellation of her show. “I’m really scared,” she said after Kate Plus 8 was axed. While Kate says she is “freaking out” about her financial future, Jon is more optimistic: “Things will work out the way they should work out. Obviously there are families out there that have several kids – people work normal jobs.” “Things work out,” he adds. “Everything is possible. I don’t have a farm on 24 acres and the kids seem to have a great time at my house.” BLAM. As always, we gotta ask …

John Ann Hotchkiss Confirms Suspicions: My Son Was Murdered!

A coroner has ruled out foul play, but John Ann Hotchkiss – the mother of Russell Armstrong – has confirmed in a new interview: “We want a murder investigation . We will do whatever is necessary to proceed.” Hotchkiss simply can’t fathom that Russell would take his own life – she says he was “warm and personable” and “loved his children to a fault” – and believes his financial struggles left him open to a “set up.” “No one is accusing Bravo,” Hotchkiss clarifies to U s Weekly . “We think someone conspired to have him murdered and it is open as to who did it.” Russell’s mother hasn’t shied away from the spotlight since her son’s death, explaining in an interview soon after the tragedy that Armstrong was petrified of his portrayal on season two of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills . Does she blame the program for what happened? No, but if Taylor and Russell had never been on it, “I honestly believe in the bottom of my heart they would still be together,” she said of the “emotionally brutal show.” And she does blame Bravo for airing Monday’s premiere: “[It] was a total slap in the face. It just showed how superficial and shallow [Bravo] is… they don’t care about anyone. They just care about ratings.”

Russell Armstrong: I’ll Never Survive The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

More information has come out regarding the suicide of Russell Armstrong, including a chilling statement he allegedly made to his mother not long before hanging himself on Monday night. In an interview on HLN, Russell’s mother, John Ann Hotchkiss, tells host Jane Velez-Mitchell that her son confided in her just a couple weeks ago. Referring to his financial difficulties and allegations of abuse against his wife – all of which would be featured this fall on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills – Armstrong said: Mom, they’re just going to crucify me this season… I don’t know what to do. I’ll never survive it. John Ann Hotchkiss on HLN Elsewhere: In an interview with ABC News, Ronald Richards, Armstrong’s lawyer, said the show’s focus on a lavish lifestyle plunged Armstrong into debt. “These couples join these shows, and then they keep trying to outdo each other and they end up spending all their money trying to sustain a lifestyle that’s unrealistic and wasn’t there prior to the show. The weekly social events, the dinners and all the BS, trying to pretend you have unlimited resources in Beverly Hills is tough.” As for facts/tidbits related to the tragedy, a rundown of the latest: According to the coroner, Russell was dead for at least 24 hours when his body was found. There are rumors that Russell beat Taylor Armstrong as recently as a month ago. She was supposedly hospitalized as a result. Taylor Armstrong could be responsible for her husband’s debts. Bravo will NOT air Russell’s funeral. It’s a mess at the network. What do you think should be done about season two?
