Jeremy Renner on Black Widow "Slut" Comment: Sorry, Not Sorry!

When it comes to controversial comments Jeremy Renner recently made about Black Widow, the actor appeared opposite Conan O’Brien last night and summed up his feelings on the flap thusly: #SorryNotSorry. Jeremy Renner Takes Back Black Widow Apology As part of his seemingly never-ending press tour for Avengers: Age of Ultron last month, Renner was interviewed alongside co-star Chris Evans and asked about the fact that Black Widow has been romantically linked to FOUR Avengers. “She’s a slut,” Renner joked in response. But the Internet didn’t find this comment especially funny, prompting Renner to issue a half-hearted apology soon afterward. “I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone,” Renner said. “It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.” Last night, meanwhile, Renner was once again asked about the joke and didn’t even attempt a mea culpa this time around. “I was talking about a fictional character and fictional behavior,” Renner reasoned. “Conan, if you slept with four of the six Avengers – no matter how much fun you had – you’d be a slut. “Just saying. I’d be a slut.” Renner and Evans weren’t the only Avengers to run into some problems while promoting the Avengers sequel. After growing sick of questions about his personal life, Robert Downey Jr. walked out of a Q&A with a nosy reporter a couple weeks ago. View Slideshow: 21 Smoldering Superheroes on the Big Screen

Carly Fiorina Announces 2016 Presidential Run; Former HP CEO to Seek GOP Nomination

Yesterday, retired brain surgeon Ben Carson announced his 2016 run for the GOP presidential nomination. Today, another controversial figure from the private sector has thrown her hat into the ring, and like Carson, she differs from the typical Republican nominee in many ways, but might ironically suffer in the primaries due to her old-guard views on several important issues. Carly Fiorina is best known for her tenure as CEO of Hewlett-Packard and her 2010 senate campaign, both of which ended badly. Even so, Fiorina believes she has the necessary name recognition and respect from her fellow Republicans to have a real chance in an already-crowded field of nominees.  “Yes, I am running,” Fiorina said today during an appearance on Good Morning America. “I think I’m the best person for the job because I understand how the economy actually works.” “I understand the world; who’s in it.” Often described as one of the worst tech CEOs of all time thanks to the disastrous HP-Compaq merger that she spearheaded in 2005, Fiorina entered politics after being forced to resign from by the board at HP. She went on to work with John McCain during his 2008 presidential run and even addressed the RNC that same year. Fiorina quickly developed a loyal following among conservative Republicans, but was soundly defeated when she attempted to unseat California Senator Barbara Boxer in 2010. “She’s a very talented candidate and connects well with voters,” says Marty Wilson said, a political adviser who managed Fiorina’s senate campaign. “The problem is after 2010, she was no longer a candidate. So mail lists and email lists tend to atrophy when they’re not in use.” As with Carson, Fiorina’s lack of political experience could prove to be a major liability, but both candidates are likely hoping that voters will share their belief that a Washington outsider is just what the White House needs. Chris Matthews Accuses Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina of ‘Very Hard-right Talk’

With Americans heading to the polls in less than five months, the liberal media have once again adopted their typical strategy of depicting every Republican candidate as being a far-right extremist. Such was on display in this weekend’s syndicated “Chris Matthews Show” when the host began the second segment by saying, “This week’s primaries proved again that this anti-Washington year may usher in Republicans who owe a lot to the far-right.” Matthews then played a clip from his upcoming special “Rise of the New Right,” saying after its completion, “Well, Tea Parties have had some luck with conservatives who have beaten establishment Republicans this year. This past Tuesday night, for example, Nevada Republicans chose a Tea Party candidate to go against Harry Reid. And she’s not shy about her extreme views like killing Social Security and Medicare.” After a brief clip of Sharron Angle speaking at a Nevada debate, Matthews said, “And even mainstream Republicans like Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina who won nominations this week in California have bent to the right in reaction to pressure from the hard-right.” Matthews then showed a Whitman ad wherein she was talking tough about illegal immigration followed by a Fiorina commercial that had the nerve to use “that tried and true conservative line ‘The Democrats are soft on terrorism.'” The host then asked New York Magazine’s John Heilemann, “That’s very hard-right talk; is that the smart talk to win an election in California?” (video follows with more transcription of this discussion): JOHN HEILEMANN, NEW YORK MAGAZINE: Well, it’s not…It’s very clear in California in particular that this is a problem, and you see both sides of the problem. In the Fiorina race, Tom Campbell would have been the better candidate for the Republicans. MATTHEWS: To win. HEILEMANN: To win in, in, in November. Stop the tape. Whether or not Campbell has a better chance of beating Sen Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) than Fiorina does is quite speculative. After all, he got absolutely crushed by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) in 2000 losing by over 2 million votes. He even lost his own district that year by 15 points! But even this is somewhat irrelevant, for the truly conservative candidate in last week’s Republican primary was the Tea Party’s favorite Chuck DeVore. Readers should recall former Alaska governor Sarah Palin taking A LOT of heat last month when she came out in support of Fiorina instead of DeVore. As such, Matthews and Heilemann trying to depict Fiorina as a far-right candidate here were way off base: MATTHEWS: Do they want to win or be right, I mean literally right? HEILEMANN: Well, the Republican primary, the Republican primary electorate seems to want to be right more than it wants to win. Nonsense. Republicans on Tuesday went with the person with the most money that they believe can beat Boxer. If they had wanted the most conservative candidate, they would have gone for DeVore. That is NOT even debatable: HEILEMANN: So you wind up then with Carly Fiorina saying stuff it’s not clear she really believes in order to win against a candidate who probably would have had a better chance. Based on what? Fiorina beat Campbell by 32 points! Unfortunately, Matthews didn’t challenge Heilemann’s ignorant display: HEILEMANN: Then you have Meg Whitman who an otherwise very attractive candidate with tons of money who’s on the fundamentally wrong side as history shows us in California of this immigration issue. These are two candidates who on the surface should be very attractive, very compelling, and they’re both so far off on the right they’re so stranded. Amazing. Like Fiorina, Whitman wasn’t the conservative candidate in her race. That was Steve Poizner, the Golden State’s Insurance Commissioner. Conservatives throughout California largely supported him including Rep. Tom McClintock who said in campaign ads: Steve Poizner is the only conservative candidate in this race and is serious about implementing real reform in Sacramento. I am convinced that Meg Whitman has nothing to offer other than Arnold Schwarzenegger’s third term. That is something California cannot afford. Taking this further, Whitman was John McCain’s national co-chair when he ran for president in 2008. As for her immigration position, Whitman was critical of Arizona’s SB 1070. For some reason neither Matthews nor Heilemann brought this up. In the end, now that the primary season is over, the goal of America’s media will be to make every Republican candidate around the country look far more conservative than they really are. Something they possibly haven’t considered is that in a year when liberal is likely a four-letter word, being branded as far-right might be a good thing. Hmmm. As a post facto aside, Matthews and Company did discuss Fiorina’s open mike hair comment about Boxer. For some reason, as they chatted about all this “very hard-right talk” from Republicans, the subject of Democrat gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown calling Whitman a Nazi never surfaced. Color me unsurprised.

MSNBC’s Tamron Hall: Carly Fiorina ‘Like Lindsay Lohan Movie, Mean Girls’

During the 11AM ET hour on MSNBC, anchor Contessa Brewer discussed open mic comments made by senatorial candidate Carly Fiorina with Huffington Post writer Ryan Grim and remarked that the California Republican has “the ‘Mean Girls’ mentality” and “comes off like that Lindsay Lohan movie ‘Mean Girls.'” Hall was referring to Fiorina making fun of Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer’s hairstyle on air before a television interview on Wednesday. Grim completely agreed with Hall’s assessment: “Oh yeah, absolutely. It makes her look terrible. It doesn’t put her in a very good light.” Though he added: “But it’s not something so extreme that it’s going to annihilate her.” Earlier, Grim actually observed that Fiorina “really did dodge a bullet here.” He explained: “…what she said isn’t going to disqualify her from election. It makes her look a little bit silly, a little bit petty, but it’s not going to be something that destroys her candidacy or her career like you had with somebody like Helen Thomas a week or so ago.” Hall also pointed out Fiorina questioning her Republican colleague, California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman, holding her first post-primary interview with FNC’s Sean Hannity. Hall noted it was “something that may hurt her at least with a big name over at Fox” and asked Grim if Fiorina had started a “blood fight with Sean Hannity.” Grim responded by arguing that Fiorina had made a “reasonable assessment” but concluded “…to see her make the assessment shows her to be calculating. Everybody calculates. But to have it put in front of your face like that, again, just doesn’t put you in the best of light.” Here is a full transcript of the June 10 segment: 11:10AM EST TAMRON HALL: And back to politics. It has happened again. Another politician caught speaking candidly into an open mic, but not realizing that that mic was on. This time it’s Carly Fiorina, who just won the Republican primary in California’s Senate race. Yesterday morning, fresh off her celebration, Fiorina was miked for an interview with a local station in Sacramento. Here’s what she had to say about her opponent, Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer. FIORINA: Lauda saw Barbara Boxer briefly on television this morning and said what everyone says, ‘God, what is that hair?’ [Laughs] So yesterday. [ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: Open Mic Blunder; Fiorina Mocks Barbara Boxer’s Hairstyle] HALL: Well, what is she saying today? Ryan Grim is with the Huffington Post. And Ryan, by all accounts Fiorina and her team are trying to dismiss this as not a big deal. So is it? RYAN GRIM: Well, in a big way, Fiorina really did dodge a bullet here. She was, you know, talking completely candidly with the camera on her that was going to get out. And what she said isn’t going to disqualify her from election. It makes her look a little bit silly, a little bit petty, but it’s not going to be something that destroys her candidacy or her career like you had with somebody like Helen Thomas a week or so ago. What this is, is  kind of a warning shot to candidates across the country. Now think about this, any Senate candidate who’s running in 2010, last ran in 2004. That was a year before YouTube came out. So each of these candidates running for re-election needs to think about Fiorina when they’re at fundraisers, that they think are private, when they’re at their town hall meetings, everything that they do in their life is going to be filmed, and it’s only one press of a button away from going up on YouTube and circulating around the country, so- HALL: Ryan, this is a talker, though, for a lot of reasons, I think because here you have a woman kind of dissing another woman’s hairstyle, mocking her hair, when if a guy had said that, she of course would say ‘it’s about my brain, it’s about my accomplishments, how dare you go to the lowest common denominator and talk about me,’ and it made me think about the ‘Mean Girls’ mentality. Here’s this powerful, political voice, and it kind of comes off like that Lindsay Lohan movie ‘Mean Girls’ where this person doesn’t look like I think she should look. GRIM: Oh yeah, absolutely. It makes her look terrible. It doesn’t put her in a very good light. But it’s not something so extreme that it’s going to annihilate her. If a male candidate had said that about Barbara Boxer, you know, it’s unclear exactly, you know, what effect that would have. I’m sure the conversation would be a different one, you’re right. HALL: Well, people would be saying he’s sexist. But I want to play something that may hurt her at least with a big name over at Fox. Let’s play what she said about or alluded to, regarding Sean Hannity. FIORINA: I think it’s bizarre. I mean, she’s never been on Sean Hannity. I think it’s a very bad choice, actually. You know how he is….But why, after saying no to all these people, would you go on Sean Hannity? HALL: She’s talking about Meg Whitman making an appearance on Sean Hannity. So does this put her in a blood fight with Sean Hannity, then? GRIM: Well, we’re all going to be looking forward to the next interview that she does with Sean Hannity, that’s for sure. What this also does is it shows her making political calculations. It’s what every politician does, but they do it behind closed doors and they do it with their advisers. And even though this is politics, there’s something bizarrely unseemly about playing politics in it. You know, she’s saying, look, the politics of the day after the primary going on TV with Sean Hannity, that doesn’t look good. You know, and that probably is a reasonable assessment. But to see her make the assessment shows her to be calculating. Everybody calculates. But to have it put in front of your face like that, again, just doesn’t put you in the best of light. HALL: Alright, Ryan, greatly appreciate you coming on, talking about it. See you later. GRIM: Thanks for having me. HALL: Thank you.

California Senate Hopeful Mocks Climate Change Threat (Video)

Photo via Wired California Senate hopeful Carly Fiorina is currently the front runner for securing the GOP nomination in the state primary. The former head of Hewlett-Packard is hoping to bolster her conservative cred by attacking longtime incumbent and Democrat Barbara Boxer — for acknowledging that climate change is a national security threat. According to Fiorina’s latest ad, recognizing that global warming is a security issue somehow means that Boxer is soft on terrorism. The ad also displays how poorly Fiorina understands climate change. Watch: … Read the full story on TreeHugger
