In his 1998 article about the crash of ValuJet Flight 592 into the Florida Everglades, William Langwiesche explains the concept of the “normal accident.” When 105 people die, the public wants answers — a story to make sense of what happened and determine who is to blame. The piece’s ultimate point is that allowances must be made, particularly in a world with as many working parts as ours, for disasters that are not only unforeseen but unavoidable. Laying out the complicated sequence of events that led to an oxygen tank explosion in the plane’s cargo hold, Langwiesche arrives at the conclusion that it may be more dangerous to take extreme measures to avoid what amounts to a series of benign human oversights combined with circumstance than to accept that the universe will occasionally and very casually line up against you. It’s a beautifully wrought and supremely rational argument whose logic might be a source of comfort if it weren’t so horrifying.

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “On the come up”… Sex sells, duh. And, apparently, during an economic recession, sex-related sales—from Trojan condoms to wine and chocolate—have been particularly hot. “At a time when unemployment is high and bank account balances are low, people are passing the time by getting busy,” Stefan Dallakian, the owner of Paris Intimates – an online sex toy distributor—told me. It’s estimated that the sex-toy business is a $15 billion industry. As the U.S. economy has worsened, Dallakian said that he has seen sales for sex toys skyrocket. At a time when the average consumer has less disposable income, Dallakian actually said that the Return On Investment, or ROI, has been quite high. Some models even come with a 10-year warranty, which he said, “works out to less than a penny per use, which makes it a much better investment than the stock market.” It used to be that sex toys were only sold in specialty stores, but the shift to online purchasing has also boosted sales due to a key ingredient: anonymity. “People no longer have to drive to the porn store and make a face-to-face purchase,” Dallakian said. “Online ordering with discreet shipping saves you the embarrassment of exposing your kinks to strangers, and there’s absolutely zero risk of running into somebody you know while shopping.” As an added bonus to discreet shopping, ordering online is often cheaper and offers a wider selection of products. While there are numerous offerings for a thrill on a budget (“sex toys are like shoes: there are lots for men, tons for women and a handful for both,” Dallakian said), customers with bigger wallets can find toys at higher price points as well. One such product, which Dallakian calls “the Bentley of vibrators at the price of a well-equipped Hyundai,” uses medical grade silicone in its premium design. Made by a Swedish company, the toy, which is worth several hundred dollars, can now be purchased online for $125. In difficult times people do what they have to, to find a little piece of happiness. If that means making more whoopee, then so be it! Source
We already shared photos from Khloe and Lamar’s family trip to Universal Studios earlier this month, but now Kim Kardashian has posted photos from yet another theme park visit. Kim posted the following entry on her blog: We went to Disneyland last week, and we honestly hadn’t been in years! It was Mason’s first time! He had such a great time. He was so scared to meet Minnie and Mickey and would only high five them! No hugs or kisses, LOL! We went on It’s a Small World, Peter Pan’s Flight, Dumbo and so many fun rides! He was a little afraid of the Roger Rabbit Car Toon Spin ride, but so was I! LOL SMH… We hope she’s kidding. Lots more pics on the flip!
Well Hello Beautiful! I must say that I’m thrilled to bring the world of Styleaholics–Najwa Moses to this wonderful family of beauties as I travel throughout East Africa and several cities in Europe in search of all things haute — fashion, food, pleasure. For those of you unfamiliar with yours truly, I’ll let my Twitter bio give you the full rundown: The Web’s First Fashion TV Personality/Media Mogul in the Making/Fashion Blogger/Accessory designer/Editor at Bluefly.com/Freelance Creative Social Media Consultant. If you desire to know more check out my bio on my site STYLEAHOLICS.COM I arrived in Nairobi, Kenya after a 16 hour flight from JFK with an 8 hour stopover in London and though I was extremely exhausted, I was also thrilled that I had finally arrived in the Motherland! As a visual/vocal person, my six senses were keen to drink in my entire experience from the very jazzy Virgin Airlines complete with passenger friendly luxe- toiletries (I mean seriously, I can’t remember the last time I was served anything more than a microscopic bag of malnourished peanuts on a flight) and decadent desserts to my very first peek at the continent of Africa to the warm welcome from my host Caroline Malinda of Silverbird Travel who greeted me in total Hollywood fashion with my very own name card and then quickly whisked me away for a much needed brunch. Ow! Please step into my world via photos which start with me at exactly 12 hours before my flight in a sweaty panic trying to fit a Styleaholics wardrobe (I’ve got over 100 pairs of shoes) into one bag for an international journey…oy vey! Let’s Keep This Fashionship Going…up next? I head to Mombasa South — the ‘Hamptons’ of Nairobi– for a Toga themed birthday weekend of sun, rhythm and African luxury. naj:)
